political choice RAID

Hello

AM to Setup a PS4210x (24 x 600 GB 10 k) and I was wondering what type of raid to pick up. Its a single table for a small company (office staff 70). They use file, Exchange, RDS via VMWare servers. Standard of things really.

It takes about 5 TB so I could go RAID 10, but that doesn't leave much room for the expansion/snapshots etc. They don't really have the extra IOPS / s.

I thought RAID 50, but a colleague told me that was not recommended these days. Could I see that this is not recommended for the 7.2 k drives but we don't use them, I guess it will be ok?

I wasn't sure about RAID 6 due to the eventual reconstruction of time because it is the only painting in the society. I hear sometimes rebuilding RAID 6 can be bad.

Being the interest to hear what people think.

Hello Fabrizio,

Good thing about Dell PS storage is then you can go from R10 to R50/6 without losing data.  It will be extended to a larger capacity RAID level.  You can simply can do the opposite.

Exchange and VMware tend to be smaller, IO, but with more random.  Which is best served by R10.  What is "RDS"?

Caution on the use of R6 w / 7.2 K drives is they take longer to rebuild, because they are slower and get big these days.  10K / 15K disks are so much faster and less their rebuild times are much better.   Also the rebuild time is also depending on the load.   More load longer equal reconstructions.

I suggest you start by R10.  Install SANHQ and follow the model of I/O.   Also use thin volumes put into service on the side EQL.  VMware VMFS, Windows 2K 8 + (w/HIT/KIT) Windows 2 K 12 + all UNMAP support.   Also known as the recover space.   With VMFS, this is a manual process to the VMware CLI.

For Windows, if you use the MS iSCSI initiator to connect to the volume (even on a virtual machine in VMware) you can install the HIT / ME software.  Available on the EQLSUPPORT. DELL.COM site.  This improved offer MPIO, integration with SQL, Exchange, and SharePoint.   Provide consistent snapshots and adding UNMAP support for Windows 2 K 8.  Again, it is native in W2K12 +.

RAID50 vs R6.  Once you get some data in SANHQ there is an appraiser of RAID. You can get an overview of the different RAID levels using existing data.  Gives you an idea on the impact of possible performance.

R50 is slightly faster than the R6, however the 4210 is the current gen controller and it's pretty fast. Combined with 10K disk rebuild times should not really be very different.  The software also has detection of impending failures. If it is triggered it will reflect the failed drive first, instead of forcing a rebuild.

The only con against R50, is that it is two aggregated R5 RAIDsets.  So if there is a failure during a rebuild the RAIDset fails, and disconnect all volumes.   R6 is the most secure RAID level by far, but it comes at a cost of performance on the Scriptures.  However, the readings are better on R50/R6 compared to R10.

There is a technical report that has more information on the RAID policy choice.

It is available here:

en.Community.Dell.com/.../New-EqualLogic-RAID-Tech-Report-Considerations-and-Best-Practices-Released

There is a guide of best practices for VMware + EQL storage.  It is very important to set up correctly the first time.  Fix then requires more time because it requires restarting and the mode of maint.

It is available here:

en.Community.Dell.com/.../20434601

Something that gets missed when formatting your NTFS volumes (or vmdk), do not accept the default allocation size.  It says 'auto '.  Change that to 64K.  You can do that on drives C:, but all data drives must be formatted like this.  This aligned I/O bandwidth of 64K used on the Dell PS Series SAN.  Especially when executing R50/R6 that can improve the efficiency of all entries.  He is known as a 'band full writing' in terms RAID.  It takes a minimum of operations to such writing.  Stripe partial Scriptures require more operations.  Works fine as well for the R10.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards

Don

    Hi guys,.

We are made a bare metal installation and goes to 2x300GB RAID1 and 2x300GB RAID1 and RAID5 3x600GB.

When I look in the local policy of Config disc I have to choose the RAID level, but how do you decide who's going to record hard with that RAID?

    Thanks in advance!
    /F

    Hello

As far as I know, you don't have a multiple RAID array configuration option / levels with local disk at UCSM policy, you must restart the server, press the required key combination (Ctrl + H to PCIe adapters, but it is usually displayed at the POST) to get GUI RAID controller services and configure it from there.

Check: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/servers-unified-computi... and look for "changing the RAID with the WebBIOS utility level" that will tell you how to do this...

If it works, it will be almost double the read and write rates, I understand.

RAID offers for the SECOND and the following read/write of the same LARGE file acceleration and not otherwise. Any intervention of reading or writing in different files eliminates the acceleration. Any acceleration is much more dramatic on rotating discs, because it can eliminate some of the 10 ms or more long 'dead time' while the reader is a new track and the controller must wait for the correct data go in the position under the read/write head. Acceleration on the low-latency SSDS is far less dramatic.

The system drive / boot is particularly bad choice for a RAID, it reads and writes small random files in all directions. Who will get no acceleration.

You can best be served by creating a workflow that allows separate readers for the source files to Destination files, files of zero and drive system / boot.

    --------

RAID is usually done on the disks that are exactly or nearly the same. Too slow response of one of the discs can cause the RAID failure.

RAID support has been removed the disc utility GUI in 10.11 ElCapitan, probably because too many casual users got into trouble with the built-in GUI functions. You need to use the diskutil command in the Terminal, or buy the SoftRAID(4) package.

Hey kbruff2016 welcome to the community!

WD Black is a powerful HARD drive designed for larger and heavier loads as well as multitasking more heavy. It should serve you well for a long time because it comes with a good warranty of 5 years.

You have all the drives in your computer? It may be appropriate to consider as SSD for the OS that you would see great improvements in time to start loading and the overall responsiveness of the system.

If you plan use the HARD drive in any RAID arrays in the future I would recommend going with a NAS/RAID-class drive because they have additional features such as the TLER that ensure a stable and safe performance in such conditions. Red of WD is an example.

2 TB is the typical restriction for RAID level consumer PCs.  Great Mall storage device do not have the same restriction.

Change the information on CCHHR readers wouldn't be my choice to get the discs to work.  I suggest to replace the drives.   BTW - readers need to be able to RAID 2 TB with the latest devices 1 TB lost so to speak.

Personally, I don't have much confidence in "refurb 'd' PCs as they were returned for some reason any.  Stiil, you could get a good.

I put two new hard drive in this office, they have different sizes and different rpm speed, I don't want their RAID.  So I tried switch the BIOS SATA AHCI mode, so I can't start the win7, win7 gave me two choices: repair or return, repair is not too.  After I change the BIOS, everything is OK.

But I have to put all three harddisk in this office. So my question is:

I use RAID in this PC?

Do I have to re - install win7?

    ....

In any case, what should I do?  Thank you.

    d1ad1a,

RAID will work with unlike devices.  You can always install your new discs and give it a go.

It seems that the ugly way is going to be your only for the ACHI mode to work. Alternatively, just live with what you have.

  • RAID 1 or 10

Hello, I was put in charge two servers that use RAID, but I'm not too knowledgeable about RAID. Above all I am looking for peace of mind.
As I understand it, RAID 1, and 10 have fault tolerance and a disk can be replaced if she have questions. We have a Dell Poweredge 1800 with hardware RAID1 and another server Dell running RAID10 via CentOS software.
    Thanks in advance.
    (1) my main concern now is this: If a disk fails and I replace it, automatically know which drive is the new? I wouldn't have to replace the existing drive with a new empty and will end up with nothing. This server is not replaceable hot, so I won't have a choice but to turn off it if/when I replace the drive.
    (2) if my RAID card fails and I have to get a new one, should be the same model? It automatically detect the disks and I everything works automatically?

    1. the controller will indicate which drive has failed.

    2. you need a similar controller.

Keep in mind however, RAID is redundant - it is NOT backup.  For a case where two disks don't (or damaged), or the failure of the RAID controller. a backup - separated from the system - is absolutely necessary.

Do not rely on the RAID of ANY type of backup.

  • RAID battery showing as degraded, but is - this?

Hello everyone, I have a PowerEdge 2900 server.

    BIOS version: 2.7.0

    The RAID firmware: 6.3.3 - 0002, A-00
    OpenManage: v7.4, A00 w / patch v7.4.02, A00

In the OpenManage software, under System--> Storage--> PERC 6 / I integrated--> battery, the battery shows 'Deteriorated' with the 'next time learning' showing only 0 hours.

I tried to choose 'Start Cycle to learn' in the dropdown menu, but that doesn't change anything. I also tried to change the 'Cycle to learn late' at a time, but after this time, nothing happened and that the 'learn maximum' is now showing only 0 hours as well.

Then, I opened a command prompt and run the command of omreport storage battery - output showed the same information as the OpenManage web interface. I then ran the action of omconfig buffer startlearn = = 0 = 0 command battery battery and got a successful command! message, but this does not seem to start the learning process.

In the past when this has happened, I would like to restart the server and battery then begins a learning cycle and everything would be fine. So I rebooted the server yesterday in the hope that it would enter into a learning cycle. But this time, even after rebooting, the battery is always degraded showing.

Go to the page of the virtual disks and delete the single disk volume. It should then show under physical disks as a loan, then you can assign it as a hot spare to begin rebuilding in RAID 10.

  • Windows 7 (Ultimate, 64-bit) Software-Raid: possible after installation?

    Hello

already have Windows 7 (and tons of other programms) installed. I currently plan to add another hard drive and enable Raid 0. The only thing that's keeping me currently is: I Don t want to go through a whole new installation.

During the fist installation (upgrade from Vista), I also installed AHCI.

    (a) is it possible to activate a software raid without having to go through a whole new installation?
    (b) would it also possible to create and save an image of the current installation and then rewrite in the scratched disks?

    Any hint is appreciated.

    Thank you

There are two types of RAID arrays.
    (1) software RAID
    (2) hardware RAID

Hardware RAID usually requires a smart controller on the motherboard, a gigabyte or JMicron chip.

    See:
Installation of hardware RAID on Windows 7
    http://www.nikmakris.com/blog/post/installing-hardware-RAID-on-Windows-7.aspx

Information on the Raid Windows 7 software:
    http://www.alanjlee.com/interesting-bits/a-few-notes-on-Windows-7-software-RAID/

Nothing is absolutely foolproof, if the chip RAID controller failure, then two readers are probably currupt.

If I had the choice, he would be RAID 5 or 50.

    Hello

I installed an Adaptec RAID 1220SA controller in an Optiplex 3010 and contains two HARD drives in the annex. It is not all disks connected directly to the motherboard. The RAID card, or readers connected to it are visible in the BIOS, so they cannot be selected as boot devices.

The machine starts OK, past through the initialization of the controller RAID OK, but then it stops with a 'no hard drives detected' attention, giving 3 choices: continue, go to the bios, go to the automatic test utility.

However, if (continued) F1 is pressed, it starts perfectly among the RAID drives and everything works as expected.

Any ideas how to get rid of this error/warning message?

  • Choice for GTX 970 or GTX1070 video cards

I have reviewed the recent message for a recommended GPU.  I tried to respond to a specific recommendation for the 970 or 1070 with little success.  Even after the signing, when I clicked on reply, nothing happened.  Perhaps the procedures have changed since the last, I used the Forum or a temporary problem.  My situation is slightly different, so I started a new post.  My system is as follows:

    Windows 7 operating system

    ASUS P9X78 deluxe motherboard

    Intel i7 CPU 3930

    32 GB OF RAM DDR3 1600

2 256 GB SATA III MLC SSD drives

    4 disks 7200 RPM SATA 1 TB 2 RAID 0 configurations.

    Videocard of NVIDIA GTX660 2 G

I need to replace the video card to transfer on a second PC upgraded to windows 10 since his ATI video card is not compatible.  The 970 or 1070 are a good choice, but difficult.  The problem I have is this:

    • I need to replace the second PC card as soon as POSSIBLE, since the subject PC I use now is exclusively dedicated to the video editing with no e-mail and minimal Internet usage.
    • The 1070 is currently out of stock and cannot significantly reduce editing and rendering time.
    • The 970 comes in so many different versions and manufacturers to the point of being a dilemma of choice.

What is a good choice for 970 to my present moment in time?

At the moment there is a driver problem with any series GTX 10 trying to use R3D media.  Also aren't GTX1070 available here yet so there is no test to see if they really work with first at all.  If you need to move now get a GTX 970 plain ordinary a good supplier with a good warranty.  Many are on sale now.
