Port - group VLAN ID Questions

Hi guys

Can I change change the running virtual machine port group?

in the case where the virtual machine was in a group of Port named test - VLAN ID 100 and I need to change the Port Group deployment VLAN ID 105 which now means my VM will not have access to traffic on vlan 100? It's automatically or I need to change my IP or something?

and this comes from the frequently asked questions

Q: a configurable virtual machine on several VLANs?

A: you can set up a single VLAN ID for each virtual network adapter on a virtual machine. However, since you can config -.

ERUS up to four virtual cards per virtual machine, you can configure a virtual machine that spans four different VLAN.

I think I'll need to set up several virtual LANs for some virtual machines. What do mean by "set up a virtual machine that spans four different VLAN".

Thank you guys

Yes, you can certainly change the portgroup. But, remember, your new VLAN is configured properly in order to maintain the networking of virtual machine after the change.

Max on max. position 2-3 drops of ping may occur depending on your use of the network and ESX utlization of resource for the change task.

Simply go to the settings-> virtual adapter - > select new vlan-> OK

If you want your traffic to be moved to a different VLAN dynamically, it must be done at the level of the physical switch. Think of the vswitch as a "dummy" switch layer 2, it will follow policies of networking of the physical switch only, sound rather a passage only. Everything depends on the new port (nic) configured to take the new vlan correctly or not.

  • NSX Distributed Firewall - can you firewall connected vNIC distributed to port groups

    Hello

If your virtual machines were connected to various groups of distributed (I.e. VLANs) port on a vSphere distributed switch, then you installed NSX, NSX allows create you firewall rules that apply to these VM vNIC is related to these same groups distributed port? I wasn't sure if you were first to migrate virtual machines to virtual switches before NSX allowed to assign firewall rules.

    Thank you.

We can use NSX dFW windout enable virtualization of network (VXLAN and controller NSX) on the Cluster.

DFW NSX can operate on both VSS or vDS

NSX DFW works at the level of VM vNIC, which means that a virtual machine is always protected, regardless of how it is connected to the logical network.

VM can be connected to a port group VLAN supported VDS or a logical switch (port-group supported by VXLAN).

  • The Cisco Nexus 1000V VSM port group settings?

I could not find the Group of port settings when executing the VSM in a virtual machine covered in the Cisco documentation... they say just 'create 3 groups of port '.   But, the configuration of VLANS to these pages are not clear to me.

In the configuration of VSM, you set the VLAN on each network (Mgmnt, control, package).   This means that the VM VSM will be production of marked packets, so groups of port must be set as master / virtual tag comments.

But, if this is the case, why they recommend 3 groups of ports?  You should be able to use a trunk port group and letting the physical switch the VLAN.  Thus, they rather waiting for assignment of VLAN will be on the Port groups?

The Cisco config docs give much information on the Cisco command line configuration...  Some may give, or point, the settings on the VMware port groups when using MSM in a virtual machine?

    Hello

VSM virtual machine generates no marked packets but depends on the configuration of the port group VLAN ID Vswitch to label.  It's done as having evacuated the computer host computer on the vmnic associated the Vswitch.

  • Difference between groups of ports and VLANS

    Hi guys

I read ESX Admin guide 2 times till now, but I still don't know what exactly is the difference between groups of ports and VLANS? I understand, but if someone asks me this question I will not be able to respond with confidence.

Network also label: my understanding is that it's just label No technical significance in configuration?

    Thanks in advance

One VLAN is one of the many settings that you can configure for a group of ports, you also have the tabs security, Traffic Shaping and consolidation of NETWORK cards.

Port group name, you associate you a VM port group must be placed systematically on other hosts if you want to migrate or virtual failover from one host to another.

  • Question about the migration to a new vswitch NFS port group

We currently have our group of NFS port on the vSwitch that has all our VLAN and I'd like to bring out a vSwitch isolated dedicated network cards that will handle only NFS communnication.

I have two network cards additional that I configured on an another vSwitch.  My question is can I remove the port from a vSwitch group and add it to this new and expect it to work?  This unmount and mount the NFS volume for me?  It will be just a quick blip?  What is a larger company?  I ask because I'm trying to figure if I need power off all the virtual machines that are on NFS before moving the port group.

Is there another method that I should follow to do what I'm doing?

    Thank you

    t

You'll need plan a failure.  You will need to create a new portgroup vmkernel, since you can't really "moving" a portgroup.  In addition, since you must create a vmkernel portgroup, it cannot be on the same subnet as the existing vmkernel portgroup.  You can have two on the same subnet, no matter how vSwitch' are you have.  Also, I'm not 100% sure the NFS, when you go back, to be assigned a new ID and be recognized as a new data store and force you to re-register your vm.  It's pretty easy to do, but it may be necessary.

Yes, it does not matter. Note, however, that the "trunk" is what Cisco calls a switchports that sends / accepts frames with tagging VLAN. If you switch to other suppliers 'trunk' name may not be what you must configure.

  • Number of groups of ports and VLANs by vSwitch

    Hi all

I'm looking for any insight or best practices in what concerns the number of VLANs that are ongoing to shared resources on a vSwitch.  Our ESX servers, there are 6 physical network adapters associated with (using the property intellectual hash).  These cards are the uplinks to the vSwitch which provides the virtual machine networks.   We use VLAN Tagging (VST) and created groups of ports for each Vlan ID.  Until now, we have about 7 groups of ports for 7 different VLAN.     I know the max is 512, but are there aspects to add several groups / VLAN port that I'm missing?  (We use vSphere 4.1)

    Thank you...

Groups of ports by vCenter limit is 5000, but you do not sound as it reaches.

Really, for the number, you have (7) you are a pretty small network as much as standard implementations are going, and you'll be fine.

I don't think it is interesting to look at if you really expect to be using all six ports - it is rare for aggregation in order to get increases in actual performance beyond two, and often 'more' is not better.

LACP changes things a bit, but it does not apply to many environments.

You could do something like that

    $clusterName = "cluster"
    $pgName = "test2"
    $vlanId = "1111"
    $vSwName = "vSwitch1"

    Get-Cluster -Name $clusterName | Get-VMHost | Get-VirtualSwitch -Name $vSwName | New-VirtualPortGroup -Name $pgName -VLanId $vlanId

It will add the portgroup to the vSwitch on all hosts in the cluster

  • Affecting several VLANS to a Port Group

    Hi all!

We have 2 switches farm of server connections to the host server. Each of our 8 ESX servers has 4 physical network adapters that support virtual machines. We have 2 network cards to each physical switch. We have a single vSwitch and 2 port VM groups set up on each ESX Server. We use and configuration active / standby in Port groups so we can control what physical move the VM speaks to. All 4 network cards are available for the Group of ports, with connections going to spend 1 active and forward to switch connections 2. It is reversed on the other group of Port.

We have several VLANS associated with our data center. Is it possible to put the tag VLAN on 2 port groups VM to support multiple VLANs? Otherwise, I think we have to put up a pair of these groups of ports for each VIRTUAL local area network, we want to make it available to the virtual machines on each ESX Server. Is this correct? We have some circuits/EtherChannel enabled on switches that work properly. However, we cannot port VM groups to pass traffic unless label them us, and it seems we can only enter a VIRTUAL local area network in the area.

Thank you in advance for your help!

To use the trunks that are coming in your ESX host, you must have your VLAN Tag somewhere along the way.  If you are not at the level of the switch (since you're trunking), you will need to do the vSwitch, either the level of the virtual machine.

VSwitch level, this by creating exchanges and then marking at the level of the port group.  Marking that is currently happening in the ESX/vSwitch, and your vm must use the port suitable for group the VLAN they need to use.

Your last option is to tag at the level of the virtual machine itself.  To do this, your vSwitch must use VLAN 4095 tag, which allows all the VLANS to pass through, and all tags are marked.  The portgroup vSwitch here is basically a tunnel and will allow the unmodified traffic, but now, you have to mark your VLAN of the NETWORK adapter in your virtual machine.  It is very effective if you have a large number of virtual machines.  The most practical method will be to create the VLAN-based exchanges at the vSwitch level and go from there.

Unlettered, somewhere, communication will not incorrectly, as the physical switch will assume that all traffic not marked will even vlan uses unmarked frames (vlan native), and machines on that vlan can communicate each other.

  • VMKernel port group

Here is the configuration of the network of one of our hosts ESX 4.1:

    (1) the virtual computer network

    (2) Service with 1 IP console

    (3) VMKernel with 1 IP for vMotion and iSCSI, called as VMKernel_iSCI

I can see there are 4 NICs attached to this host.

Now, I just know, that same using iSCSI and vMotion VMKernel is not a good practice.

    question 1

    So I would like to know how is the mapping of the ESX host's network. Is this;

    1 NETWORK card = 1 VM Network

    1 NETWORK card = 1 Service Console

1 card NETWORK = 1 which is currently used for iscsi and vmotion VMKernel port group

In a standard switch, there are 2 network cards configured.

    2nd question

I want to delete 1 port VMKernal vmotion (VMKernel_iSCI) and create a dedicated for vmotion.

    I know that I have will require another IP address, but what of NIC, it will be;

    1 NETWORK card = VMKernel_iSCSI

    1 NETWORK card = VMKernel_vMotion

    Please explain.

    Thank you

    Mihir

From a pure technical point of view, it will work, as long as your network is configured properly (i.e. taking advantage of VLAN and the separate subnets on management, vMotion and iSCSI). However, I am worried about the bandwidth and quarrels with such a configuration.

BTW. except if you've already seen it, I would recommend that you take a look at http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/virtual_networking_concepts.pdf

  • How VLANs ' IP subnet ing works with based port of VLAN (series N2000 and N3000)

    Hi all

    I have a small pile of x N3024 2 acting as my heart L3 with a lag of 2 x 10 g down to a stack of x N2048 5 acting as L2 switch for my PC workstations.

Workstations are that all on the port assigned VLAN 10 (switchport access vlan 10). I have a bunch of developers who want to access without restrictions more or less to assign random IP addresses for their VM (Virtualbox and VMware) Workstation.  As you can imagine, I would like some control over this situation.  the powerconnect guide I described features of subnet IP VLAN but does not seem to enter in how it works and interacts with the port actually function vlan assignments.

What I currently have is the VLAN 10 assigned to a segment that support the subnet 172.100.x.x which dates back to our base of L3 for routing to other segments. What I want to do is to configure the VLAN based on IP and then load the dev is to config their VM with another IP range, say 10.10.x.x.

Theory here is, I set the L3 core with say 20 VLAN and an IP to register in L3 path between subnets and then configure the battery switch L2 workstation with IP - based VLAN to recognize 10.10.x.x and separate on VLAN 20.

However, I think the simplified here question is if I have a nail up to 10 ports VLAN, will the than basic work IP subnet VLANS as I want only it? Or, I need to create a subnet IP VIRTUAL local area network for the two IP ranges? I have to remove the assignenment VLAN per port and are based entirely on the treatment of subnet IP VLAN?

If there is a better RTFM on this topic you can tell me I would appreciate it

    Thank you!

I ended up calling specialists... great Dell technical support here.

In fact, the IP based VLAN works very close to what I want to achieve. Missing from the user guide is that the port needs to be in the mode. Ports using switch port mode and bound to a VLAN just didn't work... probably because the vlan IP based did not differ from the port binding. Dell support has suggested to use the trunk mode, but my answer is finished using the general mode; any traffic not referenced, PVID located my usual LAN vlan ID and acceptance of port traffic of new vlan based on IP. In this way, I'm able to have a physical host DHCP on the corporate LAN and a virtual machine on that host to bind to a different subnet which is then isolated in the new NAV based on IP.

  • Port group

    Hello world

I'm new to vmware, I have a standard switch and,.

I have to add a vlan. I have 4 esxi hosts in a cluster.

I have connected to the vsphere client. I clicked on one of the host (say host1) configuration - networking - add network-connection type machine virtual vswitch1 (which is my standard switch).

Under the port group properties, I gave VLANID-90.

It of over or do I need to change more.

    But I don't see what vlan under host 2, 3 and 4.

    Hello

I'm trying to understand: you try to configure the computer virtual portgroup host1 and see a new portgroup to host 2-3-4?

Adding a vlan in virtual switch means add a machine virtual portgroup, and these steps must be made to achieve this:

    1. Add vlan physical switch (and the junction ports that are connected to the host)

2.1 if you have a distributed vSwitch, simply add a portgroup distributed with the id vlan correct (the configuration is split at the host that are connected to this virtual switch)

2.2 If you have a Standard switch you must create a group of ports of std in vSwitch for each host that is to be connected (this is your case)

2.3 If you have a standard switch and you want to do this in a single "action", you must use a powershell script

    Hope this might be helpful...
