Portege 7140 first installation

Hello
I have an old 7140 Portege that I bought from a friend. But there is no restore etc. disks. The portege 7140 doesn't have an internal cdrom drive but an external that is not recognized at boot making it a little more difficult installation.

I bought an external hard drive case and copied the files of Windows XP installation on the hard disk. I then used a boot disk to get the prompt back and run the winnt.exe Setup program in ~/i386/ it seems to work very well and is part of the substance of the standard installation. Then it restarts and comes to the part of the Setup program when the screen is blue. Then it says windows startup and does nothing else. I tried the same procedure with Windows 2000 and got the same result.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Alex

Hello

Unfortunately, it's not easy to say why it of not possible to install the operating system.
Your installation procedure is not a standard installation, and there could be question of installation.
I've never tried your recommended METHOD and I guess that it doesn't work with every BONE. I suggest using the extended drive
Before you install any Windows OS please ensure that the system is installed with the latest BIOS.

PS: I visited the driver Toshiba page but I put t find all the XP drivers for this device. Drivers are available only for 98, NT and W2k

In the configuration of the BIOS for my toshiba portege 7140, I can't change the settings for the DVD-ROM/Docking station. I have a new hard drive I can't install windows xp on, because the cd/dvd player will not play (it starts to spin then stops). Even with my old hard drive with xp on it, I couldn't drive to game/recognize any CD.

I had bought a new larger hard drive (40 GB, as opposed to the old 6 GB one) but impossible to install windows on it because I can not install from the CD. Even if I already downloaded of the Setup files from disk, I need to finish the process of the XP install disk, but I can't.

I'm unable to find or change the bios settings to solve this problem.

    Hi Mitchell,

I don't know what parameters in the BIOS you want to change for your optical drive. How are you optical drive connected to your laptop, it is USB or built in?

It would be better to get your drive working properly with your existing 6 GB HARD drive before trying to re - install XP on your new HARD drive.

    Hello

I turned on the printer to set up as a printer of replacement for when the usual distribution. I was hoping that I wouldn't need to install the ink cartridges, so I plugged into the power supply. Now, he tells me that I can not disable the printer because it can damage it. But if I don't printhead for a long period (over 6 months) the ink can dry and must eventually be replaced and which has a very high cost. So is it safe to keep the printer stored for more than 6 months with the installed ink cartridges and the ink will not obstruct Chief? Or can I turn the printer off without completing the first installation of the printer?

    Thank you

    Hello @nmc1987,

It is a great place to get help! I read your post and you want to know if you need complete installation, even if you are not using the printer for 6 months. I want to help you solve this problem.

My personal recommendation would be to close to the bottom of the printer, and when you are ready to use the printer, then insert the cartridges.

If you went ahead and set up the printer, you can store the cartridges and print heads by following this document: storage open cartridges and printheads.

You can click on the "accept as a Solution" If the problem is resolved and the 'Thumbs Up' for my effort. Please hold me. Good luck!

Never had CS6 so had not yet installed on my system (as part of the first installation) - had CC for awhile and just realized there is not yet - someone knows a way to still get on the road with CC Prime Minister? I looked for days now and the best advice seems to apply to CC 2014 and has to do with installoing a previous version (CS6) of the Prime Minister - but seems not to apply to the CC 2015... HELP - I have plans to burn and don't want to go to third-party software (if I do I'll ditch CC because it won't let me complete my work on a DVD!) @.

I found this link corresponding to your query, please see if it helps: CS6 still not installed with creative cloud

  • CC will not be listed first installation after that first install would not complete the installation.

Stopped first installation to 24%, I stopped the installation now first does not appear as an installation but CC said I installed it. I tried to uninstall the first cc and the control panel. All say, "Uninstallation was successful", yet control panel Uninstall programs listing show even the first as an application active and CC does not list the first for me to download. What now?

Problem solved the representative of Adobe technical support had me download the cleaning tool. That solved the problem.

  • Strange first installation problem

I looked around the answer to that, but nothing helped.

During my first installation of Windows 7 on the merger, he installed the language of the operating system by default as Turkish, but I noticed that I could drag and drop my Mac on fusion - so almost there, just get installed it in a language I understand.

I deleted this virtual machine and created another, this time I installed it manually, I don't check the options early in the process, he asked me the usual Windows Installer issues and I choose English as my language.

After that he had installed it, I noticed I couldn't drag dop points in the instance of merge, then I remembered when he installed inadvertently Turkish, and I checked the options at the beginning of the process, you have a few options of merging the files between the Mac and virtual machine management.

So now I've manged to install Windows properly, how can I do so I can drag and drop files?

Also I noticed in the first installation, when I changed the size of the screen he filled my Mac screen beautifully - as if the resolution of the screen had been properly defined. Now, he looks terrible in 800 x 600.

I am now a little confused.

If someone could help me? :-)

    Chris

    Hello

You must install "VMware Tools" to get the drag and drop and beautiful screen resizing back. The first time you have installed (the Turkish era), it was a 'Easy Install', which automatically installs the tools.

When you do your VM Win7 the second time, it was a plant 'Manual', which does not automatically install the tools.

During the merger and your Machine virtual (VM) are running, you can install the tools by selecting "Install VMware Tools" in the section "Virtual Machine" on the Mac.

It should work - let us know if not.

  • Portege 2000 - new installation using the PCMCIA CD-ROM XP

I try to install XP on Portege 2000 using the official PCMCIA Toshiba CD-ROM drive.

Install the XP disk boots fine, but after that Setup copied the files it blue screen (BSOD blue). I'm not very tech savvy, but I think it means that the BIOS can 'see' the PCMCIA CD-ROM, but that the real image of XP loaded by the installation program cannot, probably due to missing drivers for the PCMCIA CD-ROM?

Then, I thought that maybe I could use F6 to load additional drivers during the initial installation, but it is beyond me to create the right set of files required. I know that you can download the Freecom drivers, but I don't know what are the driver files from CD to use and how to create from scratch the txtsetup.oem file right.

Does anyone know how to properly use F6 and load the drivers for it?

I found a lot of messages suggesting I copy the installer to the HARD disk and launch the installation from there. My problem is that the XP installation is an upgrade CD, so I will ask you at a certain time to insert a previous Windows CD and if at that time there I don't have a working CD-ROM drive...

First post on this forum so be nice - I did a search but not find a thread with a real solution, but of course if I miss a please report!

    Hello

I managed to install Windows XP Home the Portege 2000 using the PCMCIA reader but I ve used recovery disks original Toshiba which includes the correct driver for external optical drive.

So far I tried not to install Windows XP Home edition, using the Microsoft installation disc.

Maybe you should get the disks of facilities and not use this upgrade disk. I think that on this path, you will be able to install WXP as suggested when you copy data from facilities at the disk directly.
Have you tried to get the original recovery disc Toshiba WXP?

  • Portege R500: XP Installation with CD/DVD external USB - SOLUTION drive

    Hi all!

I just wanted to take five minutes to inform you that installing XP on a Portégé R500 with external USB CD/DVD drive is possible, even if you have already deleted Vista and with a CD bootable XP Win in hand.

First go into your BIOS and check / set first boot device is CD/DVD player

Start your installation of win XP from the CD without the F6 thing and let go his way

After some time, the installation stops and says "cannot find the file xxxx" and you are invited to tell where is this file

"" Just replace the drive letter "C:" which is given by default with the letter of your CD/DVD drive (and leave the rest as it is) and the installation will continue until the next "cannot find...". "and you need to again replace the drive letter, etc...

After a complete installation 'automatic assisted manual', you are welcome in Win XP!

The next question is "where can I find my CD/DVD drive letter?" and the answer is "it's the next letter after your last HARD drive letter" (I consider you have only your Portege with nothing else plugged that your CD/DVD) so more often it will be 'E' C: being the first partition of your HARD disc : is the hidden / recovery partition that winning creates.

But don't worry, if you type try to the wrong letter, that you will have as much as you want until you find the good and the following "cannot find...". "it will remain the same.

I hope that this information will help some of you who want a fresh installation of win XP from a newly formatted HARD disk.

    With sincere friendships.

    Mage.

    What a great information!
Thanks a lot for posting this.

I think it might be useful to others here.

    Good bye

  • Big problems with my Portege 7140

My computer (with X) crushed and windows does not start. Whenever he tries to go into windows (the blacscreen with white markers), it crashes just - I tried to fix the system with my XP disk but everytime I get a blue screen with an error message long claiming a missing partmgr.sys. • The Portege 7140 (HDD, memory) upgrade

    Hello
I recently bought a second hand Portege through eBay. I did a little research and I feel that the 7140 has a Bay memory expansion in which I can put a stick of memory of 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB, or 256 MB. Toshiba sells only a maximum of 128 MB, but Kingston sells a key of 256 MB for laptop. The 256 MB will work fine?

Second question - can stick any disk drive 2.5 "EIDE in the laptop? Is there a technical specification somewhere that lists the BIOS revision against the sizes of drive support?

Last question - I have not actually received the laptop again and read the pdf data sheet it seems as if she isn't an internel floppy drive? If this is correct, the only way I'll be able to upgrade the bios is through the windows, is this correct? The only problem, if this is the case, it's that I use Linux not Windows. I might have to buy an external floppy drive.

In any case thank you for any help or suggestions anyone may have.

    Jon

    Hi Spinksi,

Colleague of mine has the same machine at home. He put 256 MB of RAM and it works fine. Its RAM is manufactured by Toshiba. You can also use RAM Kingston.

There's also a 20-GB HARD drive. It works fine. Before changing do updating BIOS HARD drive. You can find the latest Version on http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin under download BIOS. You'll find Toshiba BIOS update Description. Read it before you continue. It is very important.

So I know we're no sort of spec where you can find data on the BIOS and disk sizes.

Answer to your last question is: you're right. Portege had no floppy drive, and you need to update the BIOS. But I'm sure you can find cheap one by ebay.

    Good bye

  • The first Installation fails after first Boot of the Satellite L750

    Hello.

I turned on my brand-new Satellite L750 - 04K 010 for the first time tonight (bought new) and start going through the initial setup process for Windows 7 Home Premium. The installation must "Installing devices" and then hung up without activity for about 2 hours, how I decided to restart.

Then I kept getting the error windows installation has failed and would then need to restart the installation process. The computer will restart but kept coming up with the same error and the loop would continue even once.

I have not received the installation discs.

I tried to press F8 to see if the computer repair would work but only gave options to repair the system to a previous state. No Toshiba option was available.

    Help!

    Thanking you in advance,

    Greg

    It's pretty stupid situation now.
If there is no way to launch the installation of recovery once again I recommend your dealer and ask for help. With other words, ask for the replacement of the laptop.

What you can also do is to contact the nearest Toshiba service provider and explain the situation. I put t know what they can do for you, but I imagine that you will get a DVD of recovery for the installation of the OS.

Of course I n don't know what the right solution, but I don't see another option for you.

  • Satellite L500-1ZR - battery died during the first installation

    Hello

I really hope someone can help me.

During the first time I started my new Toshiba Satellite L500-1ZR battery died and my laptop turns off. I was in the middle of the installation and now when I start it, it gives a word of warning: "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error." Windows Setup cannot continue. To install Windows, click OK to restart the computer, and then restart the installation. "However, when I click OK it restarts and I find myself the exact same caveat. I tried F2 and F12 to see if he had options to do a startup repair and also I inserted a disc on which I downloaded a hardware configuration, but it won't work.

Anyone got some ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi belisu,

The advanced boot menu, you can access via the F8 key before Windows starts.
With the F2 and F12 button, you can access the BIOS menu and start.

So try to use the F8 key to access the Windows Advanced Boot menu and try to start the Windows repair option. It starts from Toshiba HARD drive recovery and restore settings factory.

    Good luck! :)

  • cannot revert to English the first installation

I just bought the M252dw. The first initialization of the on-board display, I touched french by mistake. Now, I cannot complete the initialization process because the led screen instructions are entirely in french. I can't go back to 'home' because pressing on the icon of the House does nothing and the screen is permanently blocked to 'reset '.

    Hi @gene2015,

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support! I read your post and see that the printer is on the bad language and the printer is stuck on the screen "reset." I would like to help you today. If this helps you to find a solution, please click on the button "Accept as Solution" down below in this message. If you want to say thanks for my effort to help, click on the 'Thumbs Up' to give me a Kudos.

I would like to do a hard reset to see if that will solve the problem.
Let the printer and disconnect the printer cable and the wall socket for 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cable to the output of the printer and the wall, and not a surge protector.
This ensures that the printer is full on and can help this situation.

If you can return to the home screen, if you please, try the following:

Move the screen to the left and tap the image of the machine.

Then press the picture of the machine again. (Service installation)

Then tap the first condition in the list. (Language)

    Select the desired language.

    Then tap Yes.

If you are still not able to access the settings of the printer, please Contact the HP Support for help. I don't have the reset available for this model. Check the model number and the form to receive a file number for faster assistance.

Please let me know the results. Thank you.
