Pouvez disk alignment Cause Corruption?

Hello.  I'm not familiar with alignments of disk, but from what I've read they should not be performed on Windows startup Partitions, dynamic disks or partitions with data already.  Is this true?

I have a customer that made the alignments of several windows 2003 disk / guests XenApp 4.5 VM running on VMware with vOptimizer 4 and VM converter.  These servers were already built and in production prior to alignment; I have to check if they are well as dynamic disks.

In any case, now several of the virtual machine appear randomly annihilate most of the files on the C partition and they must rebuild.  The problem is that they are their cloning of images taken after the disk alignment and readers end up getting wiped again.  This corruption could be caused by the alignment of the disc, or is it just a coincidental?

If it's because of the alignment, is there something they can do to correct this?

Thank you

John

Hi JohnLeo9,

Welcome to the community.

I do not think that disc allignment will be led to the accident until at least that physically hardidisk problem.

I recently had an error message saying "error 0 x 80070571: the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable," in reference to C:. I tried chkdsk oh so many times. No change.

Recently, I was able to access the C: files sporadically. Occasionally, sometimes not. However, I can access my files in safe mode.

When I start in normal mode, the system is acting funny. I will try to describe. It starts very well, go anyway for the office and everything. Sometimes, I am able to use the laptop for a few minutes until everything freezes but the cursor; nothing else responds, even not ctrl + alt + delete. Other times, I'm still not that chance. You know how pointing the cursor on an icon temporarily highlights the icon? Highlight the thing is sometimes just to block the system. Once locked, all I can do is hold down the power button.

I tried the system restore, but it never once helped me with the cause of the system error.

I also deleted some programs out of the startup list. Not sure if this would have an effect.

    I tried all three methods.

Methods 1 and 2 have helped for a while, but not long. Method 3 found nothing.

    What happens here?

I see nothing in the article in PC Magazine directly addressed the problem. You were talking about the complexity and the possibilities of seriously screw things with True global Image?

In addition, the link to the Microsoft solution irritates me to 'we're sorry, the requested page is not found.

However, I think I found the solution, and it is quite related software.

After scouring the logs of system events and application, I realized that the error I've been see is still bracketed by the subsystem VSS starts and stops and was almost always related to a backup operation or a virus scan.

Some research (Google search, in fact) have allowed me to suspect that successful shadows of the disc were somewhat corrupt, so I simply deleted them (vssadmin delete shadows / for = c: / all). Since then, there has been no error reported, new instant shade have been created, and everything else works OK.

  • The virtual disk is either corrupt or not a format supported.

We have a 2008 R2 SP1 VM Datacenter we cannot snapshot.

A manual snapshot of in the Client vSphere indicates the following in the tasks and events:

The virtual disk is either corrupt or not a format supported.

Our NetBackup software is automatic snapshots for VM backups and generates these three errors in the tasks and events:

    Cannot run a snapshot operation

    Operation timed out

A general error occurred: VMX protocol error.

The virtual machine has two virtual disks:

    [vmds-standard: (1) default] outhostname/ourhostname - 000001.vmdk

    [vmds-standard: (1) default] outhostname/outhostname_1 - 000001.vmdk

Virtual disk files seem to be the usual file names. Instead, they resemble snapshot files or something similar.

I don't know what is happening. Can anyone help?

The file names are correct, since there is an active snapshot on the virtual computer. I found a few entries in the log file that we/you can see:

    08:01:25.543 Mar 23: vmx | DICT scsi0:2.deviceType = scsi-disk hard
    08:01:25.543 Mar 23: vmx | DICT scsi0:3.deviceType = scsi-disk hard

There are some entries of old/orphaned for already deleted virtual disks! However, it should ask the question.

21:13:06.212 25 March: vmx | In SUMMARY: SnapshotBranch failed: changes, followed by target file already exists (5).

That's what I think is related to the question. For me, it looks like a problem once with block change tracking, which may have left orphans. What I would do, is first of all to delete all the .ctk files in the folder of the virtual machine on the data store (they will be recreated, only the next incremental/differential backup will take more time). If this is not enough, you can try to disable - at least temporarily - CBT for the virtual machine or remove the virtual machine to inventory, delete the .ctk files and then add it to the inventory...

Tried to start recovery again, tried to do it on my c drive just to see what would happen. It worked but me is not good because the OS is on d.

    Reign21,
Thanks for posting with us.  Here's the first thing I would say.

Disconnect all external devices (printers, USB hubs, USB keys, etc.) and then start.

If this solves the problem, then add back devices at a time until you discover the piece of hardware causing the issue.  Then get any drivers\software update for the device.

Also this error can be caused by memory problems.  If you have several RAM sticks, then you can remove half of them and try to run Setup again. Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers

  • The backup disk has a corrupted file system (0 x 81000008)

My computer has been implemented full backups per week on an external hard drive.  This week the back-up was not entirely successful.  When you click to view the details, I get the following error message - "backup has a corrupted file system.  "Fix it using the disk error checking tool or change backup settings to a different location.  I then click to start the disk check.  While the scan starts he gets only through files about 14000 and the dialog progress bar disappears completely, then the analysis stops.  I'm not sure a to how to solve the problem without deleting backups since I can't run the error-checking tool.  I know that I can reformat my drive external hard (according to the manufacturer's directions), but I'm not ready to lose all that data.

Dell provides only an operating system reinstallation disk, not a disc of "valorisation".

If you reside in the United States or to the Canada and are the registered owner of the computer, with a guarantee of active, a disk that contains the operating system specific to your system factory installed can be requested HERE.

Note: Dell may impose a charge for the disc.

If you do not live in the United States, contact the Support from Dell, which is located in your country.

  • Reservations of the thin disk growing cause SCSI?

In the classic text on the origin of SCSI reservations, it is mentioned actions like adding new VMDK or remove snapshots them or expanding, but not permanent expansion / more and more thin disks. Are there reasons why the expansion of the thin disks does not cause this? If the size of the block VMFS is small that 1 MB the thin vmdk is developed probably quite often when the comments file system develops?

It will take every time she needs to expand a SCSI reserve. Now, with the vsphere advanced locking mechanism a locking mechanism was relaxed if it shouldn\t be too big of a problem. In addition to this you could also, if your table is able, exploit VAAI capacity to unload the lock and do it on a level vs. block data store level.

Yet once, talked with Satyam and you shouldn't be too worried. Especially if you do not overload the table/data store.

  • disk alignment

    Hello

I use a san attached netapp fc and vsphere 4 U2 hosts and understand that the vmfs partitions are aligned by default but I have a question regarding the alignment of the disk of the virtual machine and the esx host.

The hosts are starting the san, they need to align to the lun somehow?

The guests are win 2003 and win 2008.  reading forums, win 2008 should be ok.

With regard to the pictures of 2003, im thinking I really don't want to manually align each image and I was wondering if one knows if creating a model by aligning the model and then just deploy from that would automatically make all images deployed from it aligned?

    You are right.

Create a 2003 model, align properly using mbrscan and mbralign, then once you deploy in these models, all virtual machines will be aligned.

I think you are the guests are very well.

Here is a good article on how to operate mbrscan and mbralign
