Reservations of the thin disk growing cause SCSI?

In the classic text on the origin of SCSI reservations, it is mentioned actions like adding new VMDK or remove snapshots them or expanding, but not permanent expansion / more and more thin disks. Are there reasons why the expansion of the thin disks does not cause this? If the size of the block VMFS is small that 1 MB the thin vmdk is developed probably quite often when the comments file system develops?

It will take every time she needs to expand a SCSI reserve. Now, with the vsphere advanced locking mechanism a locking mechanism was relaxed if it shouldn\t be too big of a problem. In addition to this you could also, if your table is able, exploit VAAI capacity to unload the lock and do it on a level vs. block data store level.

Yet once, talked with Satyam and you shouldn't be too worried. Especially if you do not overload the table/data store.

Looking around some people reported to ISO images shared on VMFS on hosts can cause a lot of problems with booking. I'm about to check but I have a feeling that we got a used with VM and they are shared between several hosts.

Can anyone confirm that could be the cause of the ISO a lot of activity of SCSI reservation?

    Thank you

    Hello

Any time that the metadata are updated there a reservation request. There are 3 updates to the metadata during an ISO read...

1 to mark the file as open

    1 updated access time

1 to mark the file as closed

Bed in the file requires no reservation requests BUT the other 3 actions require a reservation requests be made for each of the actions. VMFS is optimized to read files that do not change much so reading/changes (which do not include changes to the size of the file) open files invalidate any requests.

With the help of an ISO requires 3 booking requests do, they are VERY fast but can accumulate for as much.

  • Cannot convert thick disk of 10 GB on the thin disk

I made the migration of storage a week ago to convert thin (10 GB hard drive) and he has succeeded at that time and I saw, it was transformed to thin. After a few days, it was automatically converted to thick. and it happened a few times already, also tried on a few other virtual machines that have 10GB, same thing happens, after a few days of thick back conversion.  I was wondering if there is no drive required to do the migration of storage? someone has an idea? I made large capacity disks more than 50 GB, they are very good. Just having trouble with low size disks

  • Are thin disks for the readers of the OS 'Enterprise Ready'?

I thought a lot about post of Leo on recommended model VM for a while now, but I'm still worried... or rather... I am still ignorant of things?  :|

Specifically, I wonder how wise it is to use thin discs for our environment. A brief history... We are currently using EMC Clariion CX storage for all of our warehouses of virtualization. We have already built just to the South of 300 production and development of virtual machines in our environment with C: readers built on thick records. We are not currently using VCB in our environment and we back up every machine via Netbackup currently. What is the real benefit I'd get to change my templates to use thin discs instead of thickness? This would allow an increase in performance in my environment? And... If there is such a great idea... Why VMware did not provide a way to deploy thin discs from the GUI already? I'm leaning towards the fact that it might introduce more questions and unknowns that she could never be interesting, but I'd like to receive comments from others before I draw my final conclusion. What do you say? Is this useful? Have you had experiences that you could share?

    Hello

Unless you use NFS data warehouses, thin disks are a horrible idea except for the models. Don't forget that on the deployment of a model, whether thin or not, the VMDK resulting is thick discs.

My post was more precisely to do with the optimization of the model and it is faster to deploy a model of thin-provisioned a supplied standard, more it uses less space on your SAN/NAS.

    See you soon,.

  • XP Home disk damage causes the intallation caused by unreadable files.

I have a Microsoft XP Home disk that came with my machine a few years ago.

I put a new disc (and liked) in the machine (to perform a particular task) after much hassle and tried to load XP again.

Installation hangs at about a third of the way through and produced errot message saying that it is impossible to read a number of files on the disc. I used the option to skip the file, but once he got to the end and resets, it comes up with the message that it cannot start the operating system then we can assume that missing files are essential. I tried a few times. I have removed the CD and find that there is a circular mark at Midway through the disc. It was not possible to clean it.

I have the product label key stuck to the cellophane packaging that contains the start brochure here.

I have access to another Windows XP Home disc, but it is installed on one of my machines.

I am able to use the other drive, but with the key from the damaged disk or is it possible to get a fresh installation disk or download it?

I am able to use the other drive, but with the key from the damaged disk or is it possible to get a fresh installation disk or download it?

Depends on. If it's a Windows XP OEM pukka drive and not a recovery disk, then Yes you can use it with the product key of the computer. If you find my answer helpful, please click the button "Vote as helpful"! Thank you!

  • several stores data on the same disks

It's so strange. I can't create several stores data on the same drive. I have a 2 TB plugged on my server (motherboard) disk and after that I created my first store of data (100 GB), when I return to create another, that the drive isn't an option for me to create a new data store of. When I delete the data store, the drive comes as an option to create a new data store of. WTF?

    of http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-esx-4-1/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=fc_san_config/c_making_lun_decisions.html

A logic unit number must contain only a single VMFS data store.

I guess the reason for this is a SCSI reservation. Even if this has been significantly reduced in 4.x it is still necessary for some operations. Each SCSI reservation - even if this is necessary for an operation on a datastore - locks the entire disk and could therefore cause problems on other stores of data on the same drive.

  • Analysis of thin disk

We're under ESX 4.0 and want to start building virtual machines with thin disks. 3rd party monitoring (ipMonitor) allows us to follow for the use of disk space on our virtual machines. I wonder how / if it is possible to monitor disk space on thin disks. If they can grow to any size they want how monitoring software will know where the alarm?

    Thank you

    Scott

If you have the drive put in end service for your C and D size to 20 GB disks - no virtual disk will never exceed 20 GB - or take more than 40 GB of disk space - you have to worry is if you overcommitt the VMFS data store - Let's say you have 6 of these machines, sitting on a data store VMFS 200 GB - each with a C and D the service end disc size for 20 GB - initially each disc only has 5 GB of disk spaced used - initially then each computer virtual when turned off will consume 10 GB for a total of 6 x 10 GB or 60 GB of VMFS data store - when virtual machines get lit one by VM vmkernel swap file is created equal to the amount of memory assigned to the virtual computer minus the reserve - so the machines are running and that data is added to each virtual computer disks will thin provision to store that data, what are the consequences of the data store VMFS running out of space.

    1. If a virtual machine goes to additional data to the right and there is no space available on the OS of the VM data store will most likely by a clerical error and possibly crash

    2. If on virtual machines is powered off the coast and you try to turn it on and there is not enough space to create the by the VM vmkernel swap file it lights not

  • Help pass the hard drives of a scsi controller to another scsi controller!

    Hello

I deployed a cluster of virtual machines from a template and trying to customize them according to the requirement. I called one of the post and used the code below. Changed the settings of the virtual machines, but the image is corrupt all the time.

    # get the virtual computer object

    $vmVMSTORE23 = get - VM VMSTORE23

    # a thin in the storageformat of hard disk

    $vmVMSTORE23 | Get-hard drive | Together-hard drive - thin StorageFormat

    # define the type of SCSI controller

    $vmVMSTORE23 | Get-SCSI controller. Set controller SCSI-type VirtualLsiLogicSAS

I tried the other way, adding a new scsi controller and move the existing hard disks to the new controller scsi. A hard disk created along deployment of a model does not again move scsi controller and vm tries to start node scsi 1:0 and no node scsi 0:1. This is the snap of code I used

    $VirtualMachinesDetails | % {New-disk-hard - VM $_.} Name - CapacityGB 1 - Datastore (Get-Datastore $_.) (Magasin de données)-persistence IndependentNonPersistent-confirm: $false} (disc 2)

    $VirtualMachinesDetails | % {New-disk-hard - VM $_.} {Name - DiskType $_.rawtype - Devicename $_ .rdm1 - confirm: $false} (Disc 3)

    $VirtualMachinesDetails | % {New-disk-hard - VM $_.} {Name - DiskType $_.rawtype - Devicename $_ .rdm2 - confirm: $false} (drive 4)

    $disk = $VirtualMachinesDetails | % {Get-disk hard - VM $_.} Name | Select the option - 4 first}

    $VirtualMachinesDetails | % {New-SCSI - HDD controller $disk - type $_.} Type}

Someone please help me with this.

    Thanks in advance

    SAI

What I wanted to say, create a new hard drive with the new type of controller.

    Like this

    $vmName = "TestVM"$VM = Get-VM -Name $vmName

    New-HardDisk -VM $vm -CapacityGB 1 -ThinProvisioned | New-ScsiController -Type VirtualLsiLogicSAS

Then restart the virtual machine and the guest operating system must take care of the driver.

Once the driver is installed in the guest operating system, you can move the hard disk that contains the system partition to the new controller.

    $vmName = "TestVM"$VM = Get-VM -Name $vmName

    $controller = Get-ScsiController -Name "SCSI Controller 1" -VM $vmyGet-HardDisk -VM $VM -Name "Hard disk 1" | Set-HardDisk -Controller $controller -Confirm:$false

  • 12.04.01 Ubuntu x 86-putting in place a virtual Windows XP machine to access the physical disk

    Dear community,

I'm new to VMware Workstation, but progressed in computer science.

At first, I want to give you a brief introduction of my system and my goal.

HP ProBook 6550 b (System with Intel Core i5 processor Intel-based)

The HARD drive access mode: S - ATA AHCI

    Operating systems: Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04 x 86, Ubuntu 12.04 x 64

    Boot Manager: GRUB2

VMware Workstation (trial period) to 9.01 Linux x 86

Goal: install MS Windows XP Professional with physical disk access several partitions on the hard drive local

The installation of VMware Workstation 9.01 on my system Ubuntu 12.04 x 86 worked perfectly, without any error. Large.

I was able to set up and run a Windows XP VM standard by creating a new virtual disk , following the Nice Wizard.

It was just to test, but just after I tried to configure the same OS as a virtual machine using a physical disk (for advanced users) to directly access a local hard drive.

Also, I selected "BusLogic (recommended)" on the choice of type of I/O controller.

As a device, I chose the HARD internal laptop drive and used two individual partitions (the real partitions on my HARD drive I wanted access within the virtual machine).

These partitions have been preformatted with NTFS (and not have been mounted in my Ubuntu).

However, I was not sure if Windows XP has been will be installed on one of these partitions.

The turn on/off the virtual machine to install the OS, I got the message following (msg1):

"You are using a SCSI drive. Performance of dual-boot SCSI physical drives are poor. The installed operating system could not start correctly in the virtual machine. However, the physical SCSI disks work normally so exclusively in the virtual machine. »

Just after the message following (msg2):

"If you dual-boot a native Windows installation, problems can occur when attempting to start your system in VMware Workstation." For more information, see "http://vmware.com/info?id=128". "
Click OK to continue, Cancel to power off.

    And finally this (msg3):

«An error has occurred causing a virtual CPU go into the stop State.» If this anomaly had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine restart. The stop State are accessible by properly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system or a problem in VMware Workstation.
Click OK to restart the virtual machine or Cancel to turn off the virtual machine. »

I cannot explain the last error message and don't know what to do.

After specifying msg2, I found information about possible problems in dual-boot environments, caused by different drivers for the IDE controller.

So I tried to change the access mode to S - ATA AHCI HARD drive to S - ATA IDE in the BIOS to solve the problem.

Unfortunately, I have had no success on this operation, because the error message appeared again, once I restarted the VM.

Sorry, but I have no idea what goes wrong.

In fact, I don't know what VMware workstation wants to do, when you install the system on a disc/physical partition to have direct access to the local hard disk.

Because I don't see even the first screen of Windows Setup, there must be something wrong.

Underlying product system issues and if it's a primary or logical partition?

    Need a complete unformated HDD?

Only selected partitions are accessible within the virtual machine?

Is the system installed itself on the selected partitions?

Maybe some experienced users can help.

    Your help is welcome!

    Thank you.

    stanni

First I use a raw disk to install Windows XP from a virtual machine, but if I had an existing installation, I would add the partition as a raw to be executed with a VM disk.

Here's what I'd do...  Install Windows XP to a normal file based virtual machine, and then add a second disk as a raw disk with the partitions you want to join.  That's assuming that you really need not where what to start Windows XP natively and the physical partitions that access are used for data.  Also if need be add the raw disk as IDE.

I would recommend lance the Downloader of the Organizer (Ctrl + G) and in the Advanced dialog box, select your device (camera OR card reader) and choosing your external hard drive rather than the C: drive or another volume internal. See the image below.

Who will get all your images to their final destination without any move/copy of the files or folders.

Which means less chance of damaged files or broken links database. It will also be a more efficient workflow.

NB. it is always useful when you use external hard drives to keep connected to the same USB port. Also keep a backup on a secondary device because these external drives are extremely susceptible to failure.
