Pouvez vCenter DB be on a DB server, which is a virtual machine?

I've seen a few questions about the database server that hosts the DB for vCenter virtualization.

Someone at - it examples of real-world it?

Are there problems that arise when a snapshot is taken of the DB server, because it is a break from things?

What happens when the host ESX Server DB is on falls down?  If HA comes into play, the vCenter automatically picks up the new location of the DB, or you have to do all the services restart or reconfigure?

If a virtual server of DB is used, you must disable automatic DRS about it too?  (you must disable for vCenter server if it is a virtual machine)

Problems with vMotion for the DB server whether it is virtual?

I can't seem to find anything VMware on it, but I see a lot of discussion in the forums.

I really wish I had a test at this time environment...

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Yes, I have worked with clients who have virtualized their servers DB - but in does not preclude the obligation to provide appropriate backups taken from the DB, since all the VC environment is stored in the database of

No problem with taking of a snapshot-

If the ESX host server DB will flow will cause service VC down - HA will restart the DB server how you can restart the service of VC-

There should be no problem DRS activation for Server DB (or VC besides) since vmotion will work-

    I'm trying reclassification of 3.5 to Vsphere 4.1 and I improved VCenter first, making it a virtual machine.  However, when I created the server I did not allocate enough memory for it and I'm getting errors.  How can I allocate more memory for the virtual machine while it is stopped?  I can not allocate more memory, except if it is closed, but with it being the VCenter server if I stopped him so that I can access with the Vi client.  Is there a service console command?  I searched for a few hours and found nothing.

  • VCenter Server installed as a virtual machine within a ESXi servers it manages?

    Hi all.  I'm new in the world of VSphere... still in my evaluation period.

    I have only a single ESXi server running at the moment but plans to add a second later for high availability, vmotion, increase general capacity, etc.  They are / will be ESXi running on the internal storage and the virtual machines running on a shared SAN.

    Today, I installed VCenter Server 4 on a server at bottom of range/Office that I was carrying around running XP Pro x 64.

    As I was installing I read the guide installation and to my surprise, it seems to recommend that I have installed VCenter Server 4 as a virtual machine on my ESXi host.

    Now maybe I just spent too much time setting up my without new Lefthand requiring a 'witness' during the failover of one SAN to another... but I was under the impression that VCenter Server is not designed simply to host configuration, but is also designed to act as a 'witness' or to take account of quorum whenever a failure scenario occurred on one of my ESXi hosts.  I also noticed the VCenter Server features of a port "heartbeat", which I suppose one would use for the ESXi server heartbeat, but perhaps it is used for "connected mode" with other VCenter servers (I was intending to use only one since it is a small scale installation) I also felt that it would be useful enough to restore a damaged or shot ESXi host.

    So my question is, if my ESXi host dies and it is where I have VCenter Server installed, then high availability will be unable to work?  I guess there are going to be other issues with me unable to access VCenter Server while I have an ESXi host shot, too, as a greater difficulty to get the ESXi up?

    Maybe I'm wrong understand the purpose of the VCenter server... maybe it's not something that's necessary for HA, recovery, etc. and acts only as a configuration tool until something is wrong?  Or maybe I misunderstood the installation guide and they recommend only installing VCenter Server on an ESX box... they don't want this ESX box to be part of the group that manages the server?

    Finally, if indeed they recommend I install this on a ESXi host manages... would I ideally be install this for local storage on the server (where I installed ESXi) or on the SAN (where all my other virtual machines are installed)... or is it just personal preference?

    Thank you!!

    When you add hosts an active hemagglutinin vCenter cluster HA agent is installed on it.  This agent is what is actually the HA.  While necessary to add new hosts in a cluster and configure some specific parameters of vCenter vCenter's agents HA are self-sufficient and can handle HA failover so vCenter is offline.

    You must install the vCenter VM on SAN storage, so that he can use the vMotion, sVmotion, DRS, HA, functions etc. that require a SAN.

  • Roles of server separate from the virtual machine on a server?

    Hello

    I'm currently learning the server admin so please forgive my ignorance.

    I bought a server and got Win Server R2 2012. Im trying to focus by trial and error and so want to install multiple roles - that I know is not recommended because some may conflict or cause additional problems etc etc - I am not in an operational environment, but trying to imitate such.

    I've read elsewhere that you can put different roles of server on the individual virtual machines - say, for example, the print server role is on a VM that is separate to a file server role, and she needs to be restarted or goes down for some reason any you loose a single service.

    My questions are the following:

    Is this possible?

    Is this desirable?

    Whats software is used to implement this if yes?

    Hyper-V can be used?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Can I convert a server disk to a virtual machine?

    I have a number of OS X 10.5 servers running on hardware that is incredibly underused.  Since the Fusion 3 supports running OS X Server virtualized, is it possible to convert a live server disk to a virtual machine to the BootCamp to VM? I could run all 5 of my server on a single Xserve systems. I dug around, but everything points to a new facility to achieve this.

    Thank you

    Tim

    Yes, it is possible to convert physical machines to Mac OS X Server VM. I've posted instructions on how to do this in the following thread: Re: Snow Leopard Server VM existing?

    In your case, the only thing that needs to change is the version of the OS - pick instead of 10.6 10.5. I tried this with one of my machines so far, I would be interested to comment on the question of whether instructions to work for you. I'll probably convert this post into a document at some point...

    I also thought the ability to hire only the OS X physical disk partitions without copying the data (like Fusion for Boot Camp). However, Fusion currently only supported the MBR partition tables to access raw partitions, and most Macs are partitioned GPT (or hybrid MBR + TPG). You can try to use Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmware-rawdiskCreator to see if it recognizes the OS X partitions. If so, you should be able to create a virtual disk that references the partitions and boot from it as you would for a machine virtual Boot Camp.

    It is also possible to use a physical disk full (instead of individual partitions), but you would need to have partitions not mounted before using virtual machines that reference the physical disks. If you are interested in, there is a link in this thread as well.

    Please help me.

    Remy

    Hello

    1. it doesn't matter that the 'connected' is checked which is normal. "Connect at power on" is important and must be checked that it is on the screenshot.

    2. now, change the "autodetect" option to point to your 'real' cdrom device (that this laptop has).

    3 If this does not convert your cdrom ISO image 2003 and load through the second option that says "use an iso image.

    4. If this still does not work there is only one possible "your 2003 cdrom is NOT bootable. The fact that it autoruns IN Win7 does not mean that is bootable. You should check by placing it in a different machine of cdrom, restart this computer, bios in order to boot from CDROM/DVD first and see if the change boots. If it does not start even from there then for sure this cd is NOT bootable. So, the important thing is to load the cd on time to start and not inside the operating system to work.

    5. try to download an iso of the trial of the internet windows Server 2003 and use that one to see what is happening.

    6. create a new virtual machine and try here or even better to try another machine with Workstation 8 and see what happens.

    7. it is no coincidence if the CD-ROM drive is not recognized within the virtual machine.

    It should work.  Just update your ESX host to the new IP address of the source of the license.

  • Help converting a physical server 'live' in a virtual machine VMware VirtualCenter Consolidation 2.5.0

    Hello, I read the manuals and understand the process as much as I have not actually started the consolidation. I have a Compaq ML350 server which has a default of fan cooling and want to make a virtual machine as a starting point. It will be important for the virtual machine to have the same computer name and be a member of our domain. The only question which does not seem to be addressed has to do with the old server. I need to have the available printserver. I know that you cannot have two SID, names of computers or IP addresses on a network domain at the same time. There is an option to change the name of the virtual machine before you start building. It would be wise to use a temporary computer name while doing my first consolidiation/conversion. Once completed, I could stop the printserver, remove the domain, start the virtual machine, rename it, join it to the domain, and then set the IP address to match my old material printserver. I guess correctly? I can't wait to leave the company without a printserver for more than a little bit. I guess additional servers, I wanted to convert should be treated in the same way? If I posted in the wrong place, please accept my apologies. If there is other material that I may have missed that might also be useful, but I have about 4 different PDF so far. Thank you. brand

    I forgot an important step - sorry, you must add the converter

  • Flash media server 3 on VMWare virtual machine

    Someone know a FMS 3 can run smoothly on a machine virtual vmware? If so, is there any condition must be aware? Thanks for any adivse.

    We do not "officially" support the FMS under a virtual machine running, and I do not recommend the use of a virtual machine for a production server. Developers here systematically to use VMWare to test, then you can have some success using a virtual machine to test your applications.

    The biggest problem we have encountered (so far!) using VMWare's virtual machine clock tends to be very nervous compared to a dedicated machine. This Jig can lead to variations in the different operations based on the clock, interpreted by the FMS, particularly in buffer and media data.

  • PowerCLI Script to migrate virtual machines with the same network Source for the new vCenter Server.

    Hi all

    I checked a few posts on the migration to the new vCenter Server virtual machine. But I'm not very good with Powercli and need some help here.

    We have a new vCenter server where we migrate virtual machines from one source vCenter server. Here are two things that I don't know how to connect together to make sure that bwfore we turn on the virtual machine to the virtual machine is connected to its source network.

    Part 1 - this script works well but do not get any network on the vCenter destination.

    cluster = Get-Cluster "clusterA.

    $inventory = get-Cluster $cluster | Get - VM | Add-Member - MemberType ScriptProperty-name "VMXPath" - value {$this.extensiondata.config.files.vmpathname}-Passthru-Force | Select-Object Name ResourcePool, folder, VMXPath |

    $inventory | Export-Csv c:\file.csv

    $inventory = import-csv c:\file.csv

    $cluster = get-group 'b '.

    {foreach ($vm to $inventory)

    $ESXHost = get-Cluster $cluster | Get-VMHost | Select - 1 first

    New-VM - VMFilePath $vm. VMXPath - VMHost $ESXHost - location $vm. Folder - ResourcePool (Get-Cluster $cluster |) Get-ResourcePool $vm. ResourcePool)

    }

    Part 2 - I want to preserve the Portgroup macaddress and the Ip of the virtual computers and connect them to the new vCenter. How can I do this with the script below. Or how can I combine them together?

    $vm_list = get-Cluster-name "clustera | Get - VM test * | Name sort

    $information = {foreach ($vm to $vm_list)

    $network_adapter_information = get-NetworkAdapter - VM $vm

    $vm | Select Name,PowerState,ResourcePool,@{N="Path; E=       {$_.     }

    Step 2

    # Unsubscribe virtual machines

    Remove-VM - VM $vm_list-RunAsync Verbose - confirm: $false

    Step 3

    $cluster = get-group 'b '.

    {foreach ($vm to $inventory)

    New-VM - VMFilePath $vm. VMXPath - VMHost $ESXHost - location $vm. Folder - ResourcePool (Get-Cluster $cluster |) Get-ResourcePool $vm. ResourcePool)

    }

    $resource_pool = $info. ResourcePool.Name

    New-VM - ResourcePool (ResourcePool-Get-name $resource_pool) VMFilePath - $vmxpath - RunAsync-Verbose | Out-Null

    }

    Step 4

    # Put the network cards

    foreach ($info in $inventory)

    {

    foreach ($network_information in ($info.NetworkAdapter - split ":"))))

    {

    $virtual_machine = $info | %{$_. Name}

    $network_adapter = ($network_information-split ",") [0]

    $network_vlan = ($network_information-split ",") [1]

    Get-VM-name $virtual_machine | Get-NetworkAdapter-name $network_adapter | Together-NetworkAdapter - NetworkName $network_vlan-Verbose-RunAsync-confirm: $false | Out-Null

    # Start the virtual machines

    Hi all

    I made some changes to the script and it worked for me. We have added a host on the destination with all exchanges and storage mapped vCenter.

  • Move the server vCenter as virtual machine

    Hello

    I was asked to spend 5.1 vCenter virtual from one cluster to another. I guess that would not big problem, but there is a situation.

    vCenter server 5.1 is sitting on one of the hosts in Group A here is the IBM hosts with AMD processors. I have to move to group B which has HP hosts and Intel processor. This means that I have to close vCenter server to move, but at this stage I am lose the connection to the vCenter server.

    How to move this server to another cluster. vSphere client is out of the question, but also web interface. I guess that some sort of command line should work, but I don't know how

    All ideas

    Thank you very much

    In this situation, there are several options.   All of them require vcenter would fall at some point.

    1 use of vsphere replication to replicate the vm and then stop and start

    2. use converted for vcenter convert and more (you need to turn off the virtual machine to get a clean snap)

    3 use SCP from one host to another

    4 vmotion the VMS to shared storage that can see the two hosts, turn it off remove inventory in one add B and power on

    I don't know there are methods more I do 4 If you can.

    Thank you

  • vCenter Server is a virtual machine, how can I update the host

    I have 2 guests in our environment, I have updated the host of the 2nd, but may not know how to upgrade the 1 host because vcenter server runs as a virtual machine on it. This has me thinking that I don't have the installation program as best as possible.

    Basically, we have 2 Guest boxes and a small box of DC. I don't really want to run vcenter on the dc area. What would be the best soltuong for our environment? Can I keep vcenter as a virtual machine? If Yes, how can I update the host it will run on?

    Thanks in advance everyone... Chris

    I was afraid of that say you that

    Well in this case you may need to update the host manually (see for example http://communities.vmware.com/people/vmroyale/blog/2011/09/15/updating-esxi-5--single-use-esxcli-how-to) even with the need to manually update the host on which vCenter Server is running, I would always run as a virtual machine. There is usually not that many updates.

    Hello

    I'm looking for any suggestion/plan with Vcenter DB migration steps towards the new virtual machine, and then upgrade the server vcenter

    4.1 for Update1/2

    My plan will be

    (1) creating new virtual machine.

    (2) fresh install 64-bit OS

    (3) migration Vcenter DB of the physical server to the new virtual machine.

    (4) upgrade to Vcenter Server 4.1 update 41 4.1 Update1/2

    Anything else missing then please let me know.

    Hi vmguy

    I agree with this approach

    (3) migration Vcenter DB of the physical server to the new virtual machine.

    As long as you leave the old DB in tact and simply detach and copy the DB to the new Victoria Cross.

    Before you run the upgrade on the new VC and DB.

    This way, you have a restoration plan in case something goes wrong with the upgrade.

    Just to add:

    You must migrate the ADAM database so to maintain the specified permissions vCenter
