PowerCLI to zip a virtual machine to a different data store...

Hello world.

I'm working on a matter of hobby, just to see. Anyone has ideas or examples on a path, pCLI, to solve a VM, zipper upward in its entirety in a data store is not resident and continue on? I know ghettoVCB and gVCB2, but I was curious to know if anyone has ever attempted this thing for backup VMs with pCLI?

Thanks for any time and thoughts in that put you.

Won't lie. I like points. I mean, if something useful for you, consider slipping a few points for him!

I've never tried it since VCB has been around and who works for what I need.

I noticed that there is an "Export-VAPP" cmdlet in the new PowerCLI that does what you ask for vApps instead of individual virtual machines.  Bonus is that you get OVFs instead of ZIPs.

Get-VApp myVApp | Export-VApp "c:\vapps\"

If you wrap your VMS in the VAPP wrappers, you can do that easily.

  • How to move a virtual machine to a different data store, preserving its ID

I would like to move a virtual machine to a different data store.

Because I use 3rd party software that identifies a virtual machine by its ID of VirtualCenter, I'd like to preserve the ID, and I also want to preserve the name of the virtual computer.

If I clone the virtual machine, I lose the ID and name.

I can clone a second time to restore the name, but the ID is always false.

I know that I can use vmkfstools-i to copy the entire disk.

Is it possible to copy the entire VM?

    I am currently on ESX 3.0.2/VC 2.0.2

The operation that I describe is available in 3.5.x/VC ESX 2.5.x

    TIA,

    -Magister

Don't use EVER of CP to copy a VM, VMDK move/copy should be used in conjunction with vmkfstools as best practice.

    OP,

You can manually make a copy using the CLI interface or use the VI Client and browse the data store and to copy and paste in the appropriate data and as suggested Andre store, when you switch on for the first time, you should say 'keep' when asked if you want to update the virtual machine UUID.

Another thing, you could do, is if you've enabled for vMotion, you can actually use Storage vMotion which will migrate directly from your virtual machine to a different data store, it's less effort on your side and you can count on Andrew Kutz sVMotion plugin: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vip-svmotion/

  • List not updated virtual machines after the migration of the virtual machine to a different data store

My vSphere infrastructure 5 uses several data stores.

Two data warehouses are associated with NFS on different NAS shares.

I migrate VM to a data to another store.

The navigation data store, I see that the files are moved from the old data store to the new and that no file belonging to the migrated VM still does exist on the old data store.

If I look at the list of VMs on the old data store, I still see the old VM.

I see it in the list of the virtual machine on the new data store as well.

I checked that no .iso no pagefile is in the old data store.

How can I update the list of the virtual machine on the old data store?

Above all, how can I safely delete the old data store by ensuring that the virtual machine works very well on the new data store and I don't lose anything?

    Concerning

    Marius

This use of data store 'Phantom' is usually observed, if the current configuration of the virtual computer points to the 'old' data store (diskette, CD-ROM) or the virtual machine contains snapshots where - at the time where tone have been created - the VM has had these references. Once the snapshots are deleted from data store 'ghost' will go away from summary of the virtual machine.

You can download PowerCLI at http://www.vmware.com/go/powercli. There you can also find the documentation. PowerCLI is a snap-in for Microsoft Windows PowerShell that you can download at http://blogs.msdn.com/powershell/pages/download-windows-powershell.aspx if you have not already. PowerShell is a scripting language and a shell like the window BACK. A very good book on PowerCLI is Hal Rottenberg Management of VMware Infrastructure with Windows PowerShell TFM. And if you have any questions about PowerCLI, you can ask them at the Community's VMware PowerCLI.

  • Move a virtual machine to a different data store

I want to take data offline store.  I moved all devices that use my virtual machines which are on, but I don't see a way to configure the location of the .vmx file.  Y at - it a simple way to move it, or: where is the list of the .vmx that are associated with a host files?

You shouldn't really do that.  But I guess you know that now.

Simplest solution would be to right click on the vm and collect inventory, then with all the files in the right directory, open the browser of data store, do a right-click on the file vmx and go "add to the inventory.

If meet you some strange reason questions you can re-create the VM with no disc and just add the old virtual machine disks.  Then do a sVmotion to make things cleaner.

  • Rename all the virtual machine files in the data store

    Hello

We have renamed one of the name of the server of our virtual machine running on esx3.5. In addition, we have renamed this server in VC to reflect the new name of the server. Please tell us how we can rename all files in this virtual machine residing in the data store to reflect the new name of the server.

    Appreciate your quick response.

    Thanks in advance...

You can use sVMotion and move it to another data store or migrate from cold.  Two tasks will rename the underlying set of files.

  • Size of the virtual machines on the local data store

What is the best way to determne the (total) disk space using a virtual machine? We have several virtual machines on local data warehouses and would like to estimate roughly how much disk space to the total number of virtual machines use to caculate how much storage SAN, they will consume. Is there an 'easy' way to socket this information?

The most accurate way would be to calculate the total space used by the virtual machine files in the data store.

    Connect to the service console

    Navigate to the vmfs volume

    Navigate to the vm folder

    -h.

This will give you files for this particular virtual machine related to the amount of disk space used by all the vm

  • Move a virtual machine to a specified data store, creating thin discs

I apologize for the very basic question.

Can someone please provlde a working example of a command-line PowerCLI to move a given virtual machine (for example of the ' t "MY VM Sample" with spaces in the name) of a given data store (say, "Source_datastore", I should specify?) to a given data store (say, "Target_datastore") thin discs?

  • Clone the virtual machine to the local data store

    Hi all

I'm looking to automate a task daily (or almost) of my friends with a small script with powercli.

I'm trying to "backup" or to clone a virtual machine, I work in a storage of one of our servers.

The servers are managed by a 5.1 vCenter and the machine is on a shared storage.

From time to time, I clean, stop the machine, remove all snapshots and clone the virtual machine to one of the local server as a backup storage. So I put together a small script which almost works. It works as long as the target data store is a shared storage, but not with a local storage.

I get always an error that claims it can not access the local data store and is not a permissions problem...

Given that I can accomplish this via the customer without problem I thought it is possible via powercli too, or I'm wrong?

  • Clone a virtual machine to a Cluster data store

    Hello

Really simple (hopefully), but I'm trying to write a workflow that includes the provision of a virtual computer to a cluster of data store. I'm a link to the workflow 'Clone the virtual machine, no customizations' that only accepts a store of input data.

I hope that I am a bit stupid here and there is a simple answer?

    Thank you.

There is no simple answer.  DRS clusters are actually a set of rules and not a real thing, you can deploy a VMDK.  I suggest to use Onyx to deploy a virtual computer to a DRS cluster and see what it generates.  If I remember correctly, it executes DRS rules to get a recommendation for where to put a VMDK fundamentally and then uses the exit in order to actually deploy the model.

I opted to write just a simple workflow that finds the data store with the most of freespace that corresponds to a string - for example, if I have a DRS cluster named DSCluster_ugabuga, I have a lot of data stores named something like "ugabuga... ».  So you ask these storages of data and find the one which most freespace.

  • Host virtual computer and Migration of data store

I'm curious. I have an environment with Cisco UCS UC servers without them. Due to they are C-Series all storage is local for UC virtual machines run. I'll add some of the UCS C-Series servers and you want to move two of my current C-Series server CPU virtual machines to the new. I have the license Enterprise Plus 4.1 for all servers and execution of vCenter. The migration will be basicall move local data store to store local data as well under the name from host to host. My plan is to turn off the virtual machines and migrate both host and the data store at the same time. I have groups of ports built as follows:

    Port of VMKernerl groups:

    -Storage (for future shared storage)

    -vMotion

    -PI

    -ESXi Mgmt

    Virtual machine:

    -CPU VMS

    -Machines virtual server

My overall question is during this migration takes place this network (or a group of Port) will be the traffic go anywhere for the move? My guess is because it is the local storage, it will use the Mgmt. ESXi

    Thank you!

If the virtual machine will be moved to store Local data to store common data shared through 2 esxi host, then the storage shared for local storage.

So this will be the case through network vMotion and not via the management network.

But you can enable vmotion on management network itself. If you have configured like this then yes communication will be via the management via vmotion network IPkerenel active network.

  • PowerCLI Script to migrate virtual machines with the same network Source for the new vCenter Server.

    Hi all

I checked a few posts on the migration to the new vCenter Server virtual machine. But I'm not very good with Powercli and need some help here.

We have a new vCenter server where we migrate virtual machines from one source vCenter server. Here are two things that I don't know how to connect together to make sure that bwfore we turn on the virtual machine to the virtual machine is connected to its source network.

Part 1 - this script works well but do not get any network on the vCenter destination.

    cluster = Get-Cluster "clusterA.

    $inventory = get-Cluster $cluster | Get - VM | Add-Member - MemberType ScriptProperty-name "VMXPath" - value {$this.extensiondata.config.files.vmpathname}-Passthru-Force | Select-Object Name ResourcePool, folder, VMXPath |

    $inventory | Export-Csv c:\file.csv

    $inventory = import-csv c:\file.csv

    $cluster = get-group 'b '.

    {foreach ($vm to $inventory)

    $ESXHost = get-Cluster $cluster | Get-VMHost | Select - 1 first

    New-VM - VMFilePath $vm. VMXPath - VMHost $ESXHost - location $vm. Folder - ResourcePool (Get-Cluster $cluster |) Get-ResourcePool $vm. ResourcePool)

    }

Part 2 - I want to preserve the Portgroup macaddress and the Ip of the virtual computers and connect them to the new vCenter. How can I do this with the script below. Or how can I combine them together?

    $vm_list = get-Cluster-name "clustera | Get - VM test * | Name sort

    $information = {foreach ($vm to $vm_list)

    $network_adapter_information = get-NetworkAdapter - VM $vm

    }

    Step 2

    # Unsubscribe virtual machines

    Remove-VM - VM $vm_list-RunAsync Verbose - confirm: $false

    Step 3

    $resource_pool = $info. ResourcePool.Name

    New-VM - ResourcePool (ResourcePool-Get-name $resource_pool) VMFilePath - $vmxpath - RunAsync-Verbose | Out-Null

    }

    Step 4

    # Put the network cards

    foreach ($info in $inventory)

    {

    $virtual_machine = $info | %{$_. Name}

  • PowerCLI script to migrate virtual machines to the new vCenter environment

    Hello world

in the next few weeks, we need about migrate 700 VMs (Windows/Linux) server to a new environment (new vCenter, new hosts, but VMs will remain on same data warehouses). VMs will be migrated not in one batch, but rather from time to time (which, however, can understand the need to migrate some 10s of virtual machines at the same time).

Cluster names and folder structure will be identical to the old and the new vCenters. As host in the new vCenter names differ from those in the old vCenter, thought to provide a table of 'translation', which tells the script to save a given VM on host B (new vCenter) when having been registered in order to host a (old vCenter) and so on.

I thought writing a PowerCLI script which, broadly speaking, can accomplish the following steps:

    • Connect to vCenterOld and vCenterNew
    • Correspondence table of host to read from a file (see step "register VM vCenterNew below)

    Then, in a loop:

    • Ask VM name
    • Get the settings of the virtual machine: Datastore/path, network/Portgroup, HA restart priority, host, folder, note
    • View the parameters and the VM name and request confirmation migrate the virtual machine
    • Turn off VM (closed OS gracefully, but force power off if power status is still not equal 'off' after a time given)
    • To unsubscribe from VM vCenterOld (removal of inventory)
    • Registry of the VM to the data store vCenterNew (assumptions: same folder as vCenterOld, host names are different, but for each source in vCenterOld host a host of destination in vCenterNew for you join the virtual machine to can be provided, that is, CSV)
    • The value of VM portgroup (same name as in vCenterOld)
    • Set VM HA restart priority
    • PowerON VM
    • Wait / check the VM (for example, ping) connectivity / continue immediately if the virtual machine is accessible or after a certain time if the virtual machine is still inaccessible
    • Confirm that the virtual machine has been migrated successfully, OR ask the user to check the connectivity of the virtual machine

    Now to my questions:

    • Is anyone know about an existing script that does something similar or contains parts that can be useful to compile a script like this?
    • How can vCenter two connections at the same time been managed within a PowerCLI script - or doesn't work at all and a connect/disconnect to/from the two vCenters must be completed for each virtual computer?

    Many thanks for any help.

The following seems to work for me

    $vm = Get-VM -Name MyVM$nic = Get-NetworkAdapter -VM $vm $vdPG = $nic | select -ExpandProperty NetworkName

    Get-VDPortgroup -Name $vdPG
