Go to the folder in which your catalog file (with *.lrcat extension) and its accompanying folder Previews (whose name ends with .lrdata) by default in C: /... / my pictures/Lightroom, unless you have changed this. Move the file lrdata to your desktop. Launch LR and it will create a new lrdata folder. To save LR the task of reconstructing all the previews, closing LR and copy/paste the folder on the desktop on top the new lrdata folder. Usually, it's enough to solve the problem, but if it isn't, let LR build new insights.

Preview Cache error close LR?
Recently, I get a message "LR has encountered an error when reading of the ots preview cache and must be closed".
It is a regular occurrence (> 6 times today), is there a solution?
Peter R Hawkes
Peter,
I would rename the previews folder (this is the file with the extension *.lrdata sitting right next to your catalog, see here for the default location of the catalog) to something like *. lrdata.old. then start LR and choose 'Make Standard size previews' in the library-> menu previews for all images.
This will rebuild the file previews and your problem should be saved. If this is the case, you can remove old, renamed previews file (*. lrdata.old).

Error reading the preview Cache
Help! When I start my Lightroom 3, the message appears "Lightroom has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and need to quit." When I press ok, Lightroom will stop. I don't know what to do. I read on google that I need to go to my preferences and clear my cache, but I fear that I will lose the files I was working on in Lightroom. I have not yet saved them on an external again.
Using Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder, go to the folder that contains your Lightroom Catalog - usually within my pictures or my folder under your user name.
Delete the folder whose name ends with Previews.lrdata. Do not delete anything else.
Now, launch Lightroom and previews are rebuilt when you browse in the library. You won't lose anything.

I get this error several times when I use Lightroom. "Lightroom encountered and error while reading its preview cache and needs to stop smoking" tells me to remove the preview folder.
I have LIghtroom 3 catalog Previews.Irdata; should I remove all three files?

Simply remove the Previews.LRDATA folder that bears the name in the catalog file, you are trying to open.

Whenever I try to launch my 6 Lightroom, it says there "has encountered an error in its cache of the preview reading and needs to stop smoking". How can I fix?
Hi aubreyfrances,
Seems that your preview cache has become corrupted.
You must go to the same place where your catalog is stored and get rid of Previews.lrdata (not .lrcat) file
Then, launch Lightroom and check.

Lightroom has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and needs to stop smoking. Help, please
Hi crystalc,
It seems that the preview cache has become corrupted.
You must go to the location where your catalog is stored via finder/File Explorer and get rid of the file ending with Previews.lrdata (not .lrcat)
Default location of the catalog is under Pictures\Lightroom

"Lightroom encountered and error while reading its preview cache and needs to stop smoking.
Earlier today when you import a session the computer froze. After manually shut down and restart I get this error every time I open LR, "Lightroom encountered and error during playback of sound preview cache and need to stop smoking" and the application does not open. He said LR would try and correct this error the next time I opened it, but the error remains. Help please!
Rename the folder "Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.lrdata" to "Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.lrdata.old"

Trying to open 5 Lightroom, a message appears 'Lightroom has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and needs to quit' "Lightroom will attempt to solve this problem, the next time he throws" when OK key Lightroom quit unexpectedly and the computer returns to the office. This persisted for 2 days and it has not set itself. help please.
Click OK close Lightroom.
You must manually go to the location of your Lightroom by Finder catalogue / file Explorer and get rid of the Previews.lrdata folder
By default, the location would be in Pictures\Lightroom folder

does anyone have a solution to this problem?
Lightroom has to close immediately after splash because it encountered an error when reading the preview cache
Frustrated
You must remove this file previews.lrdata. It won't do any harm, and it does not solve the problem.

Anybody out there can help get LR works again.
Open LR 5 I see message "Lightroom has encountered an error in its cache of the preview reading and needs to stop smoking". I deleted the folder Preview Cache completely (saved). This does not solve the problem. What can I do next to load Lightroom?
If you remove the preview cache folder and the problem persists, then most likely you have found the wrong preview cache (it's for a different catalog previews) and you must find the right cache overview. You should use the search function of your operating system to find all files whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA and remove each of them until you can open your Lightroom Catalog.

Lightroom starts but then I get "error reading the preview cache. LR needs to stop smoking. Will try next time it starts. I restart from scratch and the same thing happens. Help please!
In the same folder that your catalog file is stored in, there is a subfolder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA. Delete this subfolder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA. Do not remove anything else.

Lightroom crashes whenever I open it with an error 'preview cache.
Says "Lightroom has encountered an error when reading of its preview cache and need to quit." and then she forces to close. I tried to uninstall/reinstall, restarted my computer (which is only a few months old). As a photographer in the middle of the high season, it's EXTREMELY frustrating! Help please!
In the same folder that your catalog is a previews.lrdata folder. Delete this (in the Finder or Explorer), then restart LR.
