Problem strange RAW corruption on master + backup hard drive

Hello

I am a professional photographer and I have a problem of confusion with corrupted pictures. Although this technique is probably not Lightroom problem, I cannot think of a better place to ask and part of the issue is related to managing files in Lightroom. The problem coincided with the release of Lightroom 2015 CC-1, but I can't tell if it's somehow connected.

In short, a month after the download and processing a large amount of RAW CR2 photos, many of them have corrupted. I only learned this yesterday when I tried to export.

Corruption looks like this: http://www.justphotos.ca/errors/MEM404067.jpg

The photo is not mine, but the problem is similar. Part of the photo seems normal, and the part is destroyed. Ratio varies.

I performed following diagnosis:

  • CheckDisk from the Windows Explorer, including a review of surface - no problems found
  • inspecting SMART disk information (via Crystal disk Info) hard - the player gets in the 'good', without the obviously alarming parameter (although I'm no expert)
  • checked the RAM with memtest86 - no error
  • Rootkit and AVG scan antivirus - nothing found
  • Explore and Lightroom can normally handle files (copy, read, even develop), it's just that they are corrupt

Most important question first: does anyone know what can cause this kind of corruption and avoid the detection of all tests mentioned above? What to do about it?

Without doubt, if there was a problem with hard disk SATA cable or the motherboard

Here's a bit more background where things get strange, and where someone with LR knowledge might be useful.

The disk in question is a 4 WD to with tens of thousands of photos. I checked a large number of files at random, and so far found corruption in only two, chronologically one after another (which may mean that they are adjacent on the hard disk, but it can also not if she was significantly fragmented). There may be others, look at a RAWs after deleti

Photos were taken a month ago. I copied them manually a master drive (internal) and a backup drive (external USB, that I connect it only for backups). I looked at all the photos in Lightroom and post processed a few hundred. They were all very good. After that they justsat there for a month with no activity and no display (IE. "I can't know exactly when they are corrupt).

After post-processing, I used a software to synchronize folders of the master and backup drive. It copies the new files, existing files that are new or that have a different file size.

Next question is crucial, so please help me shed some light on this subject. Lightroom IN ANY WAY change the CR2 files themselves? I know that it creates XMP sidecars. But it in any case never changes the master RAW file?

This is important because I know for a fact that impeccable original RAW files copied manually on the backup disk. The synchronization software is not copy of corrupted files from the master disk unless they were changed somehow.

As far as I know, classic disk corruption is invisible to the OS or file system - when it occurs, file size or date modified are changed - only the physical data of origin on hard disc tray.

It may be of academic importance right now, but I need to know to change my backup solutions for the future.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I use Windows Explorer for initial backup (when files are fresh off the memory cards) and later Karen's Replicator. Basically it compares just the folder main and backup with one set of rules. In my case, it replicates destruction and seeks new files and the changed files (by date and file size).

I can highly recommend FreeFileSync because it offers much more more available capacity and reports to the Replicator from Karen. After having compare them initial source of backup disks it provides a detailed report of the files to be added, deleted or updated. You can easily see the files and folders that will be removed or updated during a synchronization operation backup and do a quick test of validation.

Can anyone recommend software that would drive stress-test and detect physical defects possible with plates, battery or electronic? I guess the problem should be with the plates, because the files were not changed at any time for other parts of the chain could damage the flow of data through the reading and rewriting. But if Windows CheckDisk could not detect even a problem with the surface analysis, how plates can be the culprits?

All readers use control during the reading & writing data CRC to confirm the integrity of the data. Also with the degradation of the base of data errors would show in one or more of the INTELLIGENT information displays. Your car has no. It is quite possible that you encountered an error of intermittent system by reason of overloading, overheating or low supply voltage, etc. You can download the free SMART PassMark DiskCheckup utility and run the self-test extension.

You can use the free HW Monitor to check the system of base temperatures, voltages and fan speeds. If you have run Memtest86 only and not MemTest86 + you can run. Unfortunately, these memory testers all run in stand-alone mode, without the operating system loaded. This may seem like a good idea so that you can access and test all locations of memory, but he may not reveal memory problems that occur only with memory loaded and running in the OS and applications.

If you encounter other errors or system problems and two imported image files folders are affected it may have been a stroke of chance-event. The best suggestion that I can provide to help prevent it happening again is NOT move or rename files or folders after they are imported into LR. Using LR rating Keywording and Collection of tools and the filter bar, to organize and locate your image files, not folders. An inverter is also good protection against loss of same power infrequent or brown-outs.

  • Transfer of files to a backup hard drive resets their dates

This is the first time I started to transfer my data to a backup hard drive. I ran into some kind of complication, however. All records to be transferred, whether by copying or cutting, have their dates reset. Their creation dates are listed not is more like when they were created originally, but when they were transferred to the new hard disk. Fortunately, this does not affect the dates of the files inside of them, but this has made the Organization of various files - not to mention the question of being able to check while they were facts of being very problematic.

What is the cause and how can I avoid it? Can I return these dates?

What happens if you zip files and then copy the zip file and unzip it.  The dates change then?  If this isn't the case, you could do it like this.

Yes, your subscription can be activated on both computers at the same time for your non-simultaneous use, and you can disable an existing installation when installing on another machine.

  • Satellite A350 - strange problem with hitatchi HTS ATA 320 GB HARD DRIVE

Recently bought a Toshiba Satellite A350 - still under warranty.

My problem started with gel/delay of Windows whenever I transferred specific files.
I found that a lot of my files are the same; It's then that I transfer or open these files - this can take 10 minutes to load crash, then displays a corruption error
    During this phase:
The hard drive makes a slow repetitive scratching sound
The laptop hangs for an average of 10 minutes before returning to a usable state - I found more than 15 files and suspect many more that are corrupt.
I suspect a faulty hard drive, like the check disk crashes and my system hangs whenever I open / transfer of these files.

I tried to reformat and install the new OS, but always check disk crashes and I lost a lot of important files, because they became unusable.

Is there something I can do to remedy this
    or
If the hard disk is defective, Toshiba will replace?

    BTW - I m in Australia.

    Hello

Exciting announcement, but it will be interesting to know how exactly you do and what kind of data are responsible for this. I want to say I use laptop computers and can not say that some of the data makes my crazy HDD.

If you really think that there is a problem with the disk HARD nearest Toshiba authorized service provider contact. They will check the functionality of the HARD drive, and if there is a serious hardware problem, you will get a new. Of course for free.

  • All software/programs reinstall it from a backup hard drive?

I just bought my wife a MacBook Pro computer refurbished GroupOn.  It was made in 2012.  She has an old computer MacBook 2008.  We did a full backup on an external hard drive.  All software/programs installed will be reinstall from this backup?  We discovered that iLife is not on the computer is restored to nine... apparently when they wiped the computer, everything is gone, but the basics that come with Mac OS Yosemite.  Please advise... Thank you

It depends on your backup, how you did and how you plan to restore.  Two computers running the same version of operating system?

Some simple applications can simply be dragged from drive to drive. Some install components in every sense, and only a clone will restore everything. The problem is a clone of a 2008 computer cannot boot a computer from 2012. A regular drag and drop saving is not a clone, or Time Machine.

  • Problem of storage space satellite L305-S5962 HARD drive when installing XP

    Hello

Last week, I ordered two TOSHIBA Satellite L305-S5962 for my children and finally happened yesterday.
I was so glad that I found all drivers XP needed for it on Toshiba USA website, however something weird happened when I went to install XP over there.

It came with preloaded Vista and while under Vista, I checked the HARD drive space it is said about 250 GB (240 - ish), but during the installation blue screen boot XP it read C 131 GB only partition.
So, if you round up to about 130 GB, where the other 90 GB's?

This problem has happened to these two Toshibas, and read the two HDD substantially the same.
In Vista, it reads close to 250 GB, but when installing XP blue screen (once I turn off the AHCI setting in BIOS) it reads at 131 GB. Is this some kind of driver issue? or to issue OS with AHCI?

On the Toshiba site there are two HARD drive drivers, are a .exe and the other a .zip file.
I tried both in the XP installation CD of nLite, but it does not help.
It still reads GB 131, so now I have no idea what to do, or maybe I have something wrong during the splicing of nLite?

In any case, if anyone has some insight on this problem, please let me know.

    Thank you!

    -G.P.

P.S. Here is the link to site from USA, for XP SP2/SP3 drivers, HARD disk drivers.

    http://www.CSD.Toshiba.com/cgi-bin/TAIS/support/JSP/modelContent.jsp?CT=DL&OS=&category=&MOID=2350214& rpn = PSLB8U & modelFilter = TOSHIBA + Satellite + L305-S5962 & SelCategorie = 3 & selFamily = 1073768663

Even once, if someone has seen, thank YOU!

    > I checked disk space HARD it is said about 250 GB (240 - ish), but during the installation blue screen boot XP it read the partition C 131 GB only.

The HARD disk is partitioned into 3 partitions.
The first partition contains OS preinstalled; Vista
The second partition contains the image of Toshiba HDD and the last third partition is hidden. It s a small partition created by Vista and it contains the backup files. These files can be used if something goes wrong with Vista OS or if Vista needs to be repaired.

So I guess you've seen only the first partition that contains the operating system Vista

  • can not find restored files after restoring backup hard drive

I had a problem with my computer so I reset my PC back to factory setting. Before doing anything, I backed up all my documents/pictures in an external hard drive.

After successfully resetting my PC to factory setting, I ran restore backup files... I took me 4 hours to restore. Restore files has been a success.

When I restart my PC, I couldn't find anything my back upwards. I don't know that there have been restored as I have only 50 G to 200G left of my C drive.

I tried to look for documents, but I can't find anything.

What happened to all my backup files?

See Zigzag3143 answer you and I would add the following:

If you have only one copy of all the files that are important to you,
whether on an internal hard drive, external drive, or anywhere else, you
are always in danger of losing. It is always possible that a hard
car accident, near Thunderbolt, user error, virus, attack the same
stolen computer, can result in the loss of everything on your drive.
As it has often been said, it is not a question of whether you'll
    such a problem, but when.

I hope you succeed to save your photos, but for the future, be
of course, you always have a backup of these and any other
    important files on external media.

  • After the backup hard drive cloning ARD launch

OS: 10.11.6 (issue which happened on 10.11.5; update today to see if this helped)

Recently, I reformatted my hard drive to correct some wacky partitioning I played with and cloned my rear disc of a direct clone of CCC.  Also, I recreated my restoration, installation of Boot Camp and installed Windows partition.

Then, I went to launch the Office remotely and received the following error:

As a logical person, I uninstalled the application by following the steps here, reinstalled and restarted... to get the same error.

At this point, I have Google would be a bit and found mention of a permissions issue which was that other people having the same problem.  I checked my diary and here, I got the same errors:

The strict solution seems to be to delete this folder and recreate it.  First of all, I did this by connecting to the recovery partition and deleting the folder 'C' via the Terminal I didn't so not disable controls system integrity.  This resulting no change on a restart, even after do it again, uninstalling Remote Desktop, and then reinstall.

Then I disabled the system integrity (csrutil disable) in recovery and started to remove it when it is started.  I ran across the same as hoops above because it does not work all the time.

I even went away so crazy just now as to delete the folder of higher level instead of just the subfolder 'C '.  That no longer works.  I changed the permissions on the folder to 777.  No change.  Changed the owner to my user account because he invites him for an administrator account.  No change.

I went to the ARD support page and tried to present a real ticket, but it turns out that the ARD is not in the list of software that you can file a ticket on.

I'm out of ideas.  No luck, can anyone provide some guidance?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem the first time, I don't have the link with a CCC clone, but this morning (after a clean install because of this problem), I cloned my boot on a new SSD drive and this issue comes up with the clone. I reboot the original disc and ARD works on original, CCC is causing the problem, I made several clones with previous systems without problems, so it's probably a mixture of Capitan/CCC/ARD pure problem.

I left a message of support to the CCC with a reference to your thread.

hope for solution too... for the first time in my life of Apple that a problem needs a new facility...

  • Backup hard drive

Hi, I use a 1 TB external hard drive as my backup.  I stupidly just released (Air drive) cable, now my Air will not read the disk.  I learned to use the Exit command, but need the data on the disk hard "Damaged."

    Any thoughts!

Make sure that the external drives is selected in the Finder > Preferences > General

If this box is already checked, reset the SMC > reset of the management system (SCM) on your Mac controller

Then see if your Mac can see the external hard drive.

  • Backup hard drives internal and external to separate the partitions on an external drive of a second... ?

I want to back up an internal hard drive (let's call it 'A') and (B) external drive using Time Machine. Both are 1 TB in size, so I bought a 2 TB external drive and created two partitions (C and D) on this subject, only to receive each backup. So:

    A = internal hard drive

B = external drive (for "overflow" files)

C = partition to external drive for backups of A

D = partition to external drive for backups of B

My question is, can I set up Time Machine so that A back up C, every time the 2 TB drive is connected, and B backup up to D whenever the two external drives are connected? I thought it would be possible, but at the opening of the Time Machine preferences and selecting D for the first time I get a message saying:

"You want to stop backup up to 'C' and use"D"instead or back up at the same time?

If you use the two, Time Machine will take turns backup up to "C" and "D". »

I wonder if it would just be easier to return to a single partition on the hard disk of 2 TB and have the time machine to perform a backup of everything, that is, both A and B?

Last question: I'm doing this to improve Yosemite to El Capitan. the operating system affect what I'm trying to get time Machine to do?

    Thank you!

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

I have a non-partitioned device TM backup of your data and your OS disk at once

If in case you partition and drive "B" needs more than what is on the partition and drive 'A' don't you avoid warning.

update of the OS is fine, as it will give an output back to a previous TM operating system where you need it, but it is compatible across versions.
