• Illustrator, Indesign or user (me) problem?

  Not sure if it's an Illustrator or Indesign or me problem.

  Created a form in Illustrator (CS5.1) saved as .eps, black outline, white background,

  then placed in Indesign (CS5.5), problem is to fill in the blank of the circle

  indicates the color of the box or the picture under (see attached).

  I'm I forgetting to do something? I tried it with other colors

  and the problem doesn't happen, just the white background.

  Check if the circle has been set with overprint.

  You can easily see that, if you look at the file with the overprint preview.

  Remove overprinting in the Panel.

• Gradient of Illustrator InDesign vs (Banding problem)

  I have a problem with a banner large format I'll have printed, where a gradient created in InDesign's bands. The printer tells me that gradients of InDesign are not acceptable and recreate them in Illustrator or Photoshop before making the PDF.

  Is this fair? InDesign uses fewer steps in the creation of gradients which is what causes the banding, he argues. I did a lot of work large format and never some across this before so I'm eager to find some sort of evidence that they say pies porky. I guess they're just a rip of crap software.

  I'm on CS5 if that's relevant. Thanks for any advice.

  Ouch! It's terrible!

  The fact that the gradient is displayed correctly in Acrobat would be indicates that the PDF and InDesign file that generated it is certainly not the problem.

  It almost seems that your printer takes your PDF file perfectly fine and submitting some eccentric workflow type that is trying to color management before the RIP and in doing so, made his own misinterpretation of the solid shadow.

  Without knowing exactly what they are submitting this PDF file to torture, I can't give an accurate diagnosis.

  Of course, you can (actually need) to find a new printer.

  I have a file of eps Illustrator who has a shadow using a black to transparent gradient on it, but when I bring it in InDesign the shadow has a white background. I need to place it over an image partially, otherwise it would not be a problem. Is there some sort of option of transparency I'm supposed to have selected?

  You can try to show import options when you place the file and check the background Transparent, but if this is not successful, you must resave the graphic as PDF or .ai.
