  Last month, Windows Vista updates began to hang on to the 'check updates'.

  I have: 1. tried all the fixes I could find.
  2 reloaded Vista with SP1 from a recovery partition.
  3 update worked until SP2; SP2 downloaded and installed OK.

  4. then, the update said I need latest update agent (7.6.7600.256). Downloaded and installed OK. At this point, the Windows update fails.
  5. If I uninstall SP2, but let the agent update, it works. When I reinstall SP2, it fails.

  6. I have installed a completely different image of Vista - this one was integrated in SP2. This version fails in the same way.

  7. I ran SFC, CHKDSK, System diags, updated all my drivers updated BIOS and replaced the memory. As far as I can tell this is the only thing that does not work on my PC.

  Thanks for your comments, and happy this worked.  I did have the chance to try this workaround yet - my phase "check for updates..." ran for 4 hours during my may 2016 updated Patch Tuesday before we found 16 available updates - but quite a few users of Win 7 SP1 and SP2 of Vista are now reporting that before installing these updates Windows kernel mode driver (Win32k.sys) each month (for example the KB3145739 in April 2016; KB3153199 in may 2016) reduced their updates for Patch Tuesday to hours to minutes.

  First go through all the steps and then start troubleshooting.

  Step 1: Check if Windows update-related services are set to automatic and started.

  Click Start, type services.msc in the start search box, right-click to services.msc, and then click Run as administrator.

  Check the above services below:
  (a) Background Intelligent Transfer Service
  (b) cryptographic service
  (c) Windows Update

  Step 2: Rename the Catroot2 folder

  To rename the Catroot2 folder, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type cmd in the search box and right-click on cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator.
  2. at the command prompt, type the following commands and press ENTER after each line:

  net stop cryptsvc
  Ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
  net start cryptsvc

  3 remove all tmp*.cat to the following folder:

  Without more than a number of model, if specific help can be offered.  There are a lot of portable G6, but I don't expect HP to issue a new BIOS for a model that is fairly old windows 10 test was not done.

  That being said, there is no reason for "I have a year old perfectly good computer before it should be removed from junk food."  I have not heard of this particular problem before.  BTW: It will work well as before returning to the operating system Windows 7 using the set of disks of recovery or the recovery Partition with the F11 option at startup.

  All this started when I thought or could have a virus. I have everything backed up quickly & did a clean re-installation of my windows.

  Since re-install I couldn't update. I tried to do the updates manually - some work, but the important ones which do not. I contacted Microsoft Support. They went through my laptop a few times & they can't even solve the problem. However, they told me I have corrupted files in my system that allow me to make updates or reinstall my windows to factory settings (Yes, I thought)

  However, we are using Kaspersky Endpoint Security, which has a function of software vulnerability report that we want to use. This could inform us of all the machines that do not have all their updates installed. It is a simpler than using SCCM reports interface. When searching for vulnerabilities, Kaspersky Network agent uses the Windows Update Agent service to find updates in WSUS. Just ran Windows Update today and there was an optional update for 'Intel Corporation - other - Intel (r) Serial I2C IO ARE hardware controller' published on 13/05/2015. After that I installed it via Windows Update the Dell touchpad no longer works correctly. Touchpad becomes slow and unresponsive, and you cannot access the Synaptics settings more. Also, when you look in the Manager of devices it is gone and Serial I2C IO appears with a yellow exclamation point.

  Had to go back to Manager device and the restoration of the driver for Intel IO I2C ES controller Serial (he returned to the 2013 rather than 2015 driver version), but now there is no more problems in Device Manager and the touchpad works fine after reboot.
