If I change layer.enabled from false to true, the active property seems to follow the enabled property also.  I don't know the meaning of 'active', because even layer.active = false, there is no problem to manage the layer in AE.

  No, you cannot apply an adjustment for a mask layer (the concept does not work here...).

  You can use the refine edge and masks Palette on the mask to make simple changes.
