Protection of vCenter

Hi all

VCenter running in a virtual machine.

Someone can you please help me understand my own logic! ?? All this time I thought I was good take snapshots of vCenter before doing anything potentially dangerous, until it dawned on me today that if I actually lost vCenter, or it has been corrupted to a point where its inaccessbile, then how the hell I would restore the snapshot in any case I can access is more to vCenter?

In view of this, what is the recommended method to protect vCenter, because heart rate is no longer available?

Is my only option in such a scenario to restore from a backup, or connect to an ESXi host directly (as I will have more a vCenter), create a new virtual machine, slap an OS on it, put on my agent to backup and restore from the last FULL backup from my vCenter Server?

As usual, thanks in advance!

Dryv

Dryv,

You can still use your snapshot if you have lost your vCenter. Remember that the snapshot files will remain on your datatore.
1. just connect to the ESXi host vCenter is on. #affinityRule
2. turn off power the vCenter server vm if it is not off already.
3 go back to the last snapshot.
4. turn on the virtual machine.

Another way and the way that I prefer is to simply clone your front the vCenter server a major change.
Then simply bring you the clone to life if necessary.

I hope this helps.

  • Testing failover with VMware vCenter / SRM and SQL on protected volume.

OK, MRS. works well in test mode, although we would like to test a failover / then backspace over the weekend...

We run SQL 2012 on a virtual machine as well as vCenter/SRM on another virtual machine, both on the protected volumes.

If the failover stops all VM, makes a new replication then turns on the virtual machine on the DR site, it would fail because we had SQL and SRM on a protected volume?  I can understand moving protected site vCenter / SRM VM to another volume, but SQL Server is also used for other data bases we want protected.  My guess is that MRS is not smart enough to not stop SQL server last.  What should do?  What is everybody doing?

    Thanks in advance.

You need a RS and SRMDB on both sites. The SRM on the site of DR will manage the entire process and not the vcenter/srm on the production site.

    BTW. a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express (R2 SP1) - 64-bit is supportet to SRMDB. Check partnerweb.vmware.com/.../interop_matrix.php

  • Redundansy vCenter by SRM

    Hello!

I have vCenter VM on the ESXi host. I can create redundancy by MRS vCenter?

For example, if ESXi host with vCenter server VM failure, can SRM start VM vCenter on another ESXi?

    Thank you.

All first use SRM you will need a vCenter Site recovery too, and on recovery in protected site vCenter, SRM will be repeated this virtual machine on the recovery as a normal VM site.

  • vCenter Heartbeat and vCenter Failed

If vCenter Heartbeat is used to replicate the vCenter Server, then that server vCenter can't then some esxi hosts this vCenter Server manages will be they will automatically move to the other server vCenter Server or we need to do it manually?

vCenter Heartbeat is a cluster solution that protects services vCenter, so you will have two primary servers and secondary, one of the server would be active and others being passive.

Incase if the Active Server fails, HB will failover services vCenter vCenter to the passive node. No further action to perform.

  • vCenter single point of failure to see?

Hi, we are implementing a small view deployment of approximately 200 workstations virtual 5.1. I have a drawing using 2 connection servers and security with a load balancer 2 servers to guard against a single point of failure.

I intend using a cluster for the DBs backend SQL, but I'm still stuck with how to protect the vCenter/composer. I have only a single 3-node cluster to work with, so I can't use more than one server vCenter/composer.

How do you handle this in your environments?

    Thank you

vCenter in a deployment of view is more important, then in an environment Server pure since it feeds and provisioning operations.

If vCenter is down while it won't happen, but the environment view will still work.

So that means that you must have a procedure in place to be able to restore the functionality of vCenter as soon as possible.

vCenter Heartbeat is a addon-product from VMware that can protect against the BONE, material and application failure is necessary.

  • Server and managed by using same vCenter VDI infrastructure

One of my customers would like to use VMware View for its solution VDI and VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus for its servers/data center infrastructure.

It would be ok for him to manage vsphere on the VDI and the servers/data center servers, using the same server vCenter? Are there limitations or disadvantages?

The server vCenter himself will be protected using vCenter Heartbeat.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It is acceptable to use a single vCenter server for virtualization, VDI and server, but I think it's best to separate out once you press about 50 jobs.

A separate environment will facilitate the management of permissions between desktop and Server team, it will also make sure that your server infrastructure is not required to wait the software updates for the VDI environment that has happened in the past, and I found that it is easier to increase my stats for server infrastructure when I have not mixed with 300 workstations.

  • VCenter 4.1: cluster it?

    Hello

Is it possible to Vcenter 4.1 cluster (2 nodes for example)?

It was ok with VirtualCenter 2.5, under MSCS, but I don't see anything to do this for Vcenter 4.1...

    Thank you

    Concerning

In our environment, our mandate is HA or not go.  Clustering is always a must... but for some odd reason, this does not applies to vcenter because it is a virtual machine that is running in a Cluster HA.  As for heart rate its good only to have a standby vcenter server and accessible. It is not mirrored DB, which can still be a single point of failure depending on your configuration.

    A few good insigts thereon:

    http://virtualfuture.info/2009/01/VMware-vCenter-SQL-Server-best-practices/

    Official KB in this issue:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1024051

VMware, said "Yes you can do it... but.

«You can choose to protect VMware vCenter Server with third parties including, but not limited to, MSCS (Microsoft Cluster Services) and VCS (Veritas Cluster Services) clustering solutions.» VMware does not certify these third party solutions. VMware will support all of the problems with an environment that uses third-party solutions from VMware vCenter Server downtime protection. However if your problem is considered to be related to the third party, clustering solution, VMware will send to our policy of third-party software. »

And of course yellow bricks Duncan has something to say about it as well:

Now Vmware HA - heartbeat is the method of SUPPORT ONLY...

  • Move from vCenter physical VM?

    Hi all

Currently have vCenter running in a virtual machine, but I would like to move to an existing physical host.

    Is this possible?

Otherwise, it is also possible to have a different vCenter server so that if something happens to my VM version, I have vCenter install running on a physical host as well?

    Thank you

    Take a look at this - kb.vmware.com/kb/5850444.

If you are not running vCenter 4.1 do not forget that there is a 64 bit OS.

You can also use HA in order to protect a vCenter VM or the fault tolerance, if you are fired for this.

  • Is there a sense with HA clustering vCenter?

We have a host of 3 HA cluster configuration.  We are approved for Advanced with no Add - ons.  We are also very new to this!  There are a number of things that I'm trying to figure.  HA, I even need to worry about the vCenter server clustering?  Or if not clustering, so what about heart rate instead?  I can't think of a good reason that the vCenter server needs 100% uptime.  I guess I'm missing something huge here because they have developed heart rhythm without a good reason.  Thoughts?

As written HA can protect a vCenter Server running on a virtual machine.

It's a simple and easy solution.

  • vCSA HA best practices

    Hi guys, how are you?

I use a vCenter Server in a data center and I want to migrate only the vCSA, but lack of Linked-Mode and heart rate.

How can I reach an acceptable level of high availability using the vCSA? Does anyone use vCSA in a large-scale environment?

    Cheers, Jonatas B.

In vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 using external database, there is no difference for the Windows version of vCenter scalability (the managed hosts and virtual machines).

About vCenter Server Heartbeat, this product is out of order, then even in the version Windows of vCenter, VMware recommends using vSphere HA (High Availability) to protect yout vCenter VM... and in the next version of vSphere, you will be able to protect the VM using FT (Fault Tolerance) vCenter... read more about vCenter Server Heartbeat EOL : high availability Virtual Infrastructure: vCenter Server Heartbeat | United States

  • Heart rate with Oracle

Yes... you must protect your vCenter VMware your vCenter Server Heartbeat support database.

I did a few vCenter Server Heartbeat protect without SQL database, due to the constraints of the client, and I got full support from VMware.

  • Do I need a dedicated channel of MSSQL HB if I use separate vC & MSSQL servers?

Yes. You will need an address IP of channel for each host or VM you protect with vCenter Server Heartbeat.

  • 5.1.1 in Production SRM

Dear all, I implement SRM 5.1.1 in production and I have some doubts / questions in my mind. I would really appreciate if someone can clarify these for me... Please?

    Site A (protected):

    1. vCenter 5.1 VM
    2. SSO VM
    3. vCenter DB & MRS. DB VM
    4. SRM VM

    Site B (recovery):

    1. vCenter 5.1 VM
    2. SRM VM

    Issues related to the:

    1. Should I create another DB and SSO server to vCenter to site B? Or he can use those to A site? If he uses SSO and SIte A DB, SRM will work when we planned DR or during disaster?
    2. VCenter are bound or separated on each site mode?
    3. If we have 3rd Site (Say Site C), which is also a recovery site. We can configure MIS so that Site A virtual (VM of protected Site) and failover machines to two Sites of recovery? Also do I need 3 vCenter, SSO, DB to the 3rd Site?

    Thank you very much

Believe me it is not possible.

I have not seen this statement in the official documentation.

  • vSphere replication

I just have a few questions on vSphere replication, I deployed the device on one of my ESXi hosts and I have the replication of configuration for some of my virtual machines.

They must reproduce successfully, these replicate to a computer host which is another of my sites (although it all on the same network that the other site is linked directly via the BT 100 MB fiber connection)

My question is this: If something happens to the building where our servers are located and also where I have the installer of vCenter server to manage my environment ESXi, how do I get the VMs back to work on the host, they have replicated too?

Hope this makes sense, I know that I can use the web management interface to manage vreplication device to retrieve the VMS and deploy them to any host you want. But if the basic site is down I will not have access to a vsphere web management interface or you vreplication.

So, how do you bring the replicated VMs online?

I've been using vRanger connection for replication of VMs and during replication to the host who is off site, they appear only as VMs and I turn on logging to the server directly using the vsphere client, as they just normally appear as VMS on that host. But this doesn't seem to be the case with the unit of replication vSphere.

Hoping someone enlighten us on that.

As vSphere replication is a feature of vSphere, its features are accessible at the vc level. So in order to perform a recovery through the user interface in the single vc use case you have vc and vr servers upward and running. If there is crushing of the CV so you can check out this http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2012/09/21/can-i-protect-my-vcenter-server-with-vsphere-replication/article. It is for the recovery of the CR but should work for all virtual machines

  • SRM Server regenerate - certificates

    Hello

I had to rebuild a recovery site SRM server. There was no backup. The database, the DSN and the application install fine however, when I connect to my server protected site vcenter SRM, I get a certificate error

Failed to connect to the SRM 'DC' primary server in Server SRM "Secondary Site. SRM "DC" primary server cannot validate the «recovery site srm server.com:8095» Server SSL certificate The certificate of the remote host has these problems:

Certificates to host television is not complete. Reason.MSG

On the recovering VC site when I try to configure, I get the following site.

Call 'DrRemoteSiteManager.ProbeDrConnection' to object 'DrRemoteSiteManager' on the server 'sdsrm01.gbn.com' failed.

I read somewhere that if MRS is not uninstalled cleaning you will have problems to connect to a new server.

How can I remove old certificates SRM of the recovery and the protected site of virtual centres?

    Thank you very much!

    Hello

AFAIK, if one of the servers SRM is lost and no backup is available - you must reinstall both SRM and re-create the configuration from scratch.

It's not just about certificates, DBs SRM on the two sites must be synchronized.
