Query is running slowly (30 sec) first, then quickly - how to find out why?

Hi all

First of all, a warning: we are a company of rapidly growing software which provides a SaaS-like solution and is hosting an Oracle database for our own software running at client locations. I'm still not a DBA, but I've been learning for a while now and will follow appropriate courses, next year. This problem becomes urgent enough, however.

We have an Oracle 12 c (12.1.0.1.7) running on a pretty Beefy hardware (card SSD 8 cores, 72GO,) and it works fine. One of our applications raise queries that run slowly very often, but when I run the same query through Toad, it is very fast again. Sometimes I can make the same query to be slow again by changing settings, adding values to an in(), etc., but not always. By not being is not in a position to know WHY the query is slow, I can not as a solution. We have been struggling with this problem for some time (more than a year, I think) and had the same problem when you still run Oracle 11.

Some more bits of information that might be relevant:

-This user defines cursor_sharing for force, per my request (the software itself does not lie)

-J' put optimizer_index_caching at 25, because I know the DB all be in memory.

-J' put optimizer_index_cost_adj at 50, because I saw full table scan too for my taste. The two parameters when it is while the queries were not already productive.

-Memory: memory_target = 40 GB, db_cache_size = 5.5 GB, pga_aggregate_target = 8 GB sga_target = 30 GB

-Optimizer_dynamic_sampling is the default, 2.

-J' saw a few query plans have a note, something like "Explain plan was made with the statistics from previous executions. All do not have this, however.

-J' saw some explain plans in which the actual recordings differ a large amount of the expected records, planned somethings was 1, real was 4 billion...

-We actually had to add / * ordered * / for some queries to speed up execution. It's been a few other issues have better results (20 sec every time! to 200 ms), but worse when Oracle has finally found the execution plan (40ms).

-Many queries seemed to start with arrays of harm to our taste.

-A copy of the database, running locally, also had some problems with queries - the plan of the explain command took 2 seconds, the query itself only a few Ms. the same database of course does not receive any insert/update statements.

It may be important to note that this scheme receives a lot of updates and inserts, so I thought that it could screw up the statistics?

As I wrote, we have been struggling with this problem for a long, long time. We have made changes to hardware, the parameters of the Oracle, the client software, everywhere, but are no closer to a permanent solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In particular the line 25 confuses me. Always this BITMAP AND even that crazy E-lines / difference A-lines. I'm sure that's the only reason for the poor performance of this query...

I think you have a mixture of different effects here, which doesn't makes it really simple to understand exactly what is happening. To some extent this seems to be caused by the new features added in 11g and 12 c.

1. looking at the trace of the files provided above, there seems to be some problem with dynamic sampling overload (DS). This seems to be one of the reasons why you have this "first slow exec", the second fast exec, in this case without a change of regime. In this trace file, it takes 5 seconds or more to run all these queries recursive dynamic sampling as part of the generation of the plan, and there are two DS queries that contribute significantly to that time (more than 3 seconds for these two DS queries).

In order to have OPTIMIZER_DYNAMIC_SAMPLING 11 value causes these additional queries. The advantage of this setting is that you get good enough (join) estimates. Of course, it is difficult to judge how much you make this setting and how you lose the overhead of generating plan. New DS queries make use of the RESULT_CACHE have, in principle, reassessment of the same DS queries should come from the RESULT_CACHE. However, if your RESULT_CACHE is too small to contain all of the query results (although these result sets is usually very small) you can sometimes get slowdowns in generational terms if these queries need to be run instead of pull results from the cache.

2. the function of vibration of statistics of course is involved and sometimes leads to a re-optimizing. Once again, this could then lead to the problem mentioned in point 1., if DS requests takes a long time to generate the plan.

So these two functions together could lead to some difficult to predict behavior (slow first => possibly caused by DS, second time slow => caused by Feedback: statistics, leading again to DS, third etc. quick time.). It may also explain why you see 'first exec' slow, second fast exec, if re-optimizing na not take too much time and lead to a better execution plan.

3. the special regard that seems to be the wide track as part of an internal source of lines join nested loop - and in this case, the estimates are * iterative *, so be careful when comparing E-lines (iteratively) with A-lines (cumulative across all iterations). The index used functionality combine to combine two indexes TASK_IDX1 and TASK_IDX2 suggest that it would be beneficial to add PERSON_ID to TASK_IDX1 and maybe get rid of TASK_IDX2 - but it might be appropriate to other queries, which I can't really judge. You can then check if adding more attributes to TASK_IDX1 it would make even more selective about the level of the index, as most of the lines for this particular query is filtered on the WORK table, so adding TASK level. FIXED, TASK. CLOSED and/or TASK. PLAN_START / PLAN_END it would make an even more effective operation. But adding PERSON_ID should solve this particular problem.

4. the 'quick' this query (mentioned somewhere at the beginning) variation has no merge view inline (SELECT HELP... GROUP BY...), then you can try this by adding a NO_MERGE hint to the inline query (SELECT / * + NO_MERGE * / AID...), just to see if that gives you several times the plan 'rapid '. I still think that the index change described might be the best choice.

5 SQL Directives of the Plan have been mentioned a couple of times, and I think that it is not quite clear to you what they are. They are not "advice", but are a new feature added to 12 c where Oracle persists some information on bad estimates and then evaluates these SQL Plan plan generation for dynamic additional sample queries and the production of statistics to create additional guidance extended statistics. I don't have enough experience with this new feature and therefore cannot judge how they play a role here. You can ask DBA_SQL_PLAN_DIR_OBJECTS and DBA_SQL_PLAN_DIRECTIVES to see if there are tickets for your particular objects in question.

    Determine the current Version of WUA:

    Determine the version of Windows Update Agent (WUA) before using it. The current version of WUA is determined by the version of the c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll that runs in the current installation of Windows \System32 directory. If the c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll is version 5.4.3790.1000 or a later version, WUA is installed. A version earlier than 5.4.3790.1000 indicates that the Software Update Services (SUS) 1.0 is installed.

    When a call is made for SUS 1.0 using the API INTERFACE, an HRESULT of WU_E_AU_LEGACYSERVER is returned.

    You can also use the IWindowsUpdateAgentInfo::GetInfo method to retrieve the latest version of file of the c:\windows\system32\wuapi.dll that runs on a computer. The IWindowsUpdateAgentInfo interface is not supported in WUA 1.0.

  • Windows runs slowly immediately during Installation and quickly deteriorates

    Windows 7 (Home Premium 64-bit) was running slower and slower, until I noticed that I barely used it.

    Microsoft helped me to do a clean install, which went well.  However, I noticed in the next few days, he slowed down once again, to the point where he could not load pages after that one or two sites were consulted.  He started producing pop up messages that it couldn't detect an Internet connection.  I'm supposed to get 105 Mbps, but speedtests always varies considerably, from 10 Mbit/s to 80 MB/s.  I had my ISP check it out.  They reported a weak signal.  Redone, they were unable to get above 30 Mbps speeds.  They checked with other laptops, which has always produced 80 MB/s.  They conduct research on why they do not have 105 Mbit/s, but I still believe that my PC should work without problems with 30 Mbit/s.

    It's not something obvious like defrag or chkdisk.  I have Norton Internet Security 2012 with updates that are still very current.  It is set to auto-protect, including regular malware checks and defrags.  I did some defragments, who report the system is usually 1% fragmented.  I came across an article from Microsoft on unnecessary software on startup.  Unfortunately, it did not provide any indication as to which programs to remove the starter, so I removed what I considered unnecessary at startup.  Files such as Cyberlink and iTunes have been removed from the start-up.  The files checked for updates were moving start after a delay.  Although the boot files may have contributed to the problem, I don't think that they are the main problem because the PC increasingly slows down after it starts.

    I use three browsers: IE9; Chrome; and the opera.  The behavior is the same on all three.  I also had the same problem on the same PC.  I doubt it is cluttered with RAM because the problem starts so quickly and I have four GBS.

    Perhaps only a *.vmdk 800 MB / 3GB is really responsible. But these 800 MB could be extended to 2 GB, because the content of these 800 MB is not compressed during load or guestOS drivers allocate additional memory.

    *. VMDK size seems so NO indicator for the actual amount of used memory / swap.

    How will I know how much physical (a) memory and (b) the hard disk swap space EXACTLY is currently occupied by a certain virtual machine running?

    Yes, of course not. The memory used by the client is not related to the size of hard but the RAM assigned in the options of hardware reviews.

    Open the Task Manager and find a task vmware - vmx.exe or vmware-vmx - debug.exe.

    The swap file should be used if you have chosen to allow that VMware Workstation is authorized to Exchange. The file where swaps to door expansion .vmem Workstation. Search folder of comments.

  • Strange - Inserts first slowly, then quickly after the index drop and recreate

    I have a chart with lines more 1,250,000,000 on Oracle 11.1.0.7, Linux. He had 4 global index, not partitioned. Insertions in this table have been very slow - lots of db file sequential reads, each taking an average of 0,009 second (from tkprof) - not bad, but the overall performance was wrong - so I fell & re-create the primary key index (3 columns in this index) and permanently other 3 index. As a result, total number of db file sequential reads decreased about 4 times (I was expecting that - now, there is only 1, not 4 index) but not only that - the avarage db file sequential read time fell just 0.0014 second!

    In further investigation, I found in the form of traces, that BEFORE the fall & recreate, each sequential reading of the db file has been reading completely different blocks ("random") and AFTER the fall & recreate, blocks accessed by db file sequential reads are almost successively ordered (which allows to obtain cached storage Bay, and I think it's why I get 0.0014 instead of 0.009)! My question is - HOW it HAPPENED? Why the index rebuild has helped so much? The index is fragmented? And perhaps helped PCTFREE 10%, which I've recreated the index with, and there is no index block is divided now (but will appear in the future)?

    Important notes - the result set that I insert is and has always ordered columns of table KP index. FILESYSTEMIO_OPTIONS parameter is set to SETALL is not OS cache (I presume), which makes my reading faster (because I have Direct IO).

The point is, my structure of the index is of (X, Y, DATE), where X and are 99% repeating at each loading data, values and DATE is increased by one for each data load. Because I'm always insert ordered by PK, for loading a new DATE, I visit each index leaf block, in order, as in the analysis of comprehensive index. Because I'm inserted in each block sheet in every load, I have many index block splits. Which caused my pads of sheets to be physically non-contiguous after awhile. Reconstruction has been my healing...

    You got your answer before I had time to finish a model of your data set - but I think you're description is fairly accurate.

    Unless you missed a bit when your trace file copying, the index with the id of the object 64495 has not subject to drive the way readings which the other clues were. It would be nice to know why. There are two "obvious" possibilities - (a) it has been very well buffered or (b) there is an index where almost all the entries are zero, so it is rarely changed. Because it has the object id lowest of all indexes, it is possible that it is the primary key index (but I don't because I tend to create the primary key of a table before I create any index) and if this is correct your waste of time was not on the primary key index, and perhaps he tends to be very well buffered the nature of popular queries.

    Changes in performance when inserting millions of lines tend to be non-linear as the number of indexes grow.

    As you insert data in the primary key order draw you maximum benefits caching for insertions in the KP index. And since you insert a very large number of lines - the order of 0.5% - 1% of the current lines, in light of your comment 'millions' - you're likely to insert two or three lines in each block of the pharmacokinetics of the index (by the way it must compress on the first two columns)) allowing Oracle to optimize its work in several ways.

    But for the other clues you are probably very randomly jump to insert rows, and this led to two different effects:


      You must keep N times as many blocks in the buffer to get similar read benefits
      each insertion in the index non-PK blocks is likely to be a row insert - which maximise cancel it and redo overhead more undo and redo written
      each insertion in an index block finally requires the block to write on the disc - which means more i/o, which slows down the readings
      as you read blocks (and you have read several of them) you can force the Oracle to write and other index blocks that need to be reviewed to equal.

    It is perfectly possible that almost all of your performance gain comes to drop the three indexes, and only a relatively small fraction come to rebuild the primary key.

    One final thought of block shares. I think that you have found an advantage any readahead (non-Oracle) when the index blocks are classified physically, if you have a trade-off between how many times you rebuild to this advantage and to find a time during which you can afford the resources to rebuild. If you want the best compromise (a) don't forget the compression option - it seems appropriate, (b) consider the benefits of partitioning range date - it seems very appropriate in your case, and (c) by varying the PCTFREE when you rebuild the index you can assign the number of insert cycles before the effects of the splits of block of sheets have a significant impact on the randomness of the IO.

    I have an idea-if I changed the index structure to (DATE, X, Y) then I would always insert in block leaves more right side, I'd have 90-10 splits instead of 50 / 50 splits and leafs would be physically contiguous, so any necessary new buildings - am I right?

    You cannot change the order of index column until you check the use of the index. If the most important and most frequent queries are "select table where colx = X and coly = O and date_col between A and B", you must index this round way. (In fact, you can look at the possibility of using a range partiitoned index organized table for data).

    1 - the first clue is a great idea. Perhaps the most useful it seems to be the birthday column that seem to be more selective than status.
    Is there any clue on the anniversary coumn?
    The index might be just that on the anniversary of the column and change the condition like this:

    Birthday between to_date(to_char(trunc(trunc(ADD_MONTHS(CURRENT_DATE, -1),'month')),'ddmm')||(to_char(birthday,'yyyy')),'ddmmyyyy')
     and
    to_date(to_char(trunc(CURRENT_DATE,'month'),'ddmm')||(to_char(birthday,'yyyy')),'ddmmyyyy')
    

    In this way you create an index that can be used in the future to querys.
    Of course, you can add the status column if it is useful.

    2 - the second index have lots of columns. Oracle recommends not create indexes on more than three columns. Indexing many columns claim and time with increment when you insert or update the table.
    I understand that this index only have access you to the index, and you don't need to access the table, which is faster.
    Perhaps accessing an index on the id column is sufficient.

    It is not a clear sign of the browser slows down. It does not seem to be limited to any Web site.

    Sometimes, this problem is caused by an add-on that begins interacting with the page after most loads content, so you don't notice the problem until you get the message. Can the extension Skype Click-to-Call cause this problem.

    In other cases, the problem may be caused by the content of the page.

    If you find any model of the script that runs slowly, say Firefox? Script names that start with chrome: / / or resource: / / address either parts of Firefox or an extension. Starting with http:// or https:// usually script names are part of the site you visit.

    Another good cause script errors is unresponsive on Windows Vista and newer is the feature of mode of the Flash player plugin. This feature has the security benefits, but it seems to have serious compatibility problems on some systems. You can disable it using the page modules. Either:

    First I must say that it is really hard to say why your laptop is running slowly. There are several reasons for this problem, but it would be interesting to know if you have installed the operating system preinstalled by Toshiba or did you install XP yourself using a disc of Microsoft? In this case, you should try this again with the Toshiba recovery disc. It contains a picture of the factory settings and so, your laptop should work correctly.

    In addition, I would recommend to defragment the HARD disk, disable some services and startup programs that you don't need and you try a good antivirus like AntiVir. After that, clean you the registry with CCleaner.

  • Flight Simulator 3 and other games running slowly in Windows 7.

    Original title: Sims 3 (and other games works incorrectly) suddenly running slow.

    I uninstalled and reinstalled, but the problem persists. I've also updated my nVidia graphics card it is newer, but it did not much difference in any of the games. Sidenote: I installed the sims 2 and well there a little laggy every now and then (he's since widows xp; sure enough it's normal) it preforms perfectly. I just can't understand why the sims 3 has suddenly decided to run horribly.

    In other games, such as smaller little such as Turbo Subs, are also slow, but not to the point where I can't even play. In fact, if I play long enough gal disappears and it works normally. But I think that it may just be an incompatibility problem because part of the mine, Burger Shop 2, works very well, even better than when I got Vista. Looking for confirmation here.

    I bet that the people running Windows 7 with IE9 do not have this problem. If you are running XP, you cannot run any data more recent than IE8.
