Question about moving linked clones

I have a question about moving around related clones. Here is the configuration:

PC running 7 Workstation and has an image of Windows XP existing on this subject.

PC B 7 Workstation is running and also has its own image of Windows XP on it.

I create a clone linked image on the PC to XP and create another clone bound B PC XP image that is out there.

Now, I know that as long as the linked clones can access their parents, they will work very well. My question is, how is it that when I Exchange clones related - i.e. copy clone related, I did on the PC and put it on the PC B and copy the linked clone, I made on PC B and move it to PC A - how to make these two linked clones still work fine? They connect to a parent, but not the parent of origin where they have been cloned. It is tested and working 100% with absolutely no problems or problems at all. Can someone explain this to me please? Thank you!

Can you please tell me what it means CID?

Each virtual disk (basic and Flash disks disks) has a unique identifier (CID). A virtual disk of the snapshot also contains information on the CID to his record parent (parentCID) to ensure that the drive chain is consistent.

What happens if you work with a linked clone and let's say in this XP image, you install a program...

A linked clone is equal to a snapshot. Once you create a snapshot, all changes are written to the instant vmdk file and the parent remains intact vmdk file. As long as you provide the same disk parent a clone or snapshot, you can copy it as you like and the newly installed applications will appear because they are actually stored in the instant vmdk...

See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180 for more details on the functioning of the snapshots

  • Question about Eclipse link Cache coordination

    Hello

I use the Eclipse coordinating Cache link in a clustered environment. I am using the coordinating cache synchronization notifications in the cluster and logical implementation of related applications.

I have a Weblogic cluster with 3 knots. My intension is that if any cache on JPA entity is modified, its postMerge(DescriptorEvent event) method should be called on all nodes in a clustered environment, except the node where the JPA entity is changed. But the postMerge() method is called on the node where the JPA entity has been changed. As a result of this postMerge() method runs the application logic, which is not necessary that the modification is done and it's an overload. I tried, I could get a property any of the DescriptorEvent/ClassDescriptor to circumvent this extra activity. I saw a difference in the Type of Session of the DescriptorEvent class. The session type in the node, where the change arrived is UnitOfWork (RepeatableWriteUnitOfWork) and all other nodes remotely is ServerSession. There are several other types of session. From now on, I used UnitOfWork as a filter to ignore the extra synchronization call on the node, where the entity is changed. But his is not consistent, sometimes on the same node, where the entity is modified, the postMerge() methos is bieng called several times with the session as a UnitOfWork and ServerSession type. My filter in the postMerge() method will fail if the session type is ServerSession.

    * Filter that I used in the postMerge() to ignore the activity: + if (!) () event.getSession () .isUnitOfWork ())) {+ *}

another option, I've tried is MergeManager, as follows. But as is the inner class, and if the type of session is SeverSession and not UnitOfWork (RepeatableWriteUnitOfWork), this logic doesn't work. We could get the MergeManager of the ServerSession?
    * ((UnitOfWorkImpl) de.getSession () .getActiveUnitOfWork ()) .getMergeManager () .shouldMergeChangesIntoDistributedCache (); *

Is there another approach I can get the call either by the local node or the remote node of the DescriptorEvent? That rely solely on the session type (UnitOfWork) may not be appropriate. Could you please help me solve the same?

    Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards
    Srinivas Medukonduru

The postMerge() occurs on the source node because it must merge the changes into its cache the same as all the caches of the other server.

You can access the ObjectChangeSet of the DescriptorEvent on the source node and check his clone using getUnitOfWorkClone(), it will be null on all remote servers.

  • Question about moving from windows to another drive for another computer without an optical drive

I bought new parts for an old PC: card MOTHER, video card, SSD, etc. However, currently the old parts that I have that I thought were able to move to the new computer - optical drive - are too old, because they use IDE instead of SATA cables.

Now I wonder, because I did not have a SATA USB cable where can I connect my SSD for my laptop, can I install a version of windows in this SSD to my laptop?

I have used a USB cable with an external DVD drive SATA and picked up in the BIOS, and started the installer of Windows 7, so I don't see why it shouldn't.

  • VMware Linked Clones in vWorkspace

    Hi all

I am currently working on a proposal where client insist on the use of the VMware hypervisor as the note of calculation. I have some research in the related Clones and basically its similar to what the differencing disk VHD got to offer. My main concern here is so we can use the technology VMware Linked Clones to deploy persistent desktop or is it only for non-persistent desktop mode? How about storage if economies compared to the disk hard virtual differencing disk? What is the estimate of the use of the delta of a typical user based on your experience? Thanks for the advice!

    Kind regards

    Cyril

    Hi Cyril,.

I can answer some of your questions.

You can use a clone bound like a persistent desktop computer, it does not work.

After a while, however, the linked Clone will be so different from the image of the mother, it will become very swollen (for example, updates of Windows to go it would be applied to each clone bound, user installed Apps, etc.)

I know some customers like to capture profiles on persistent desktop computers so that they can periodically update the image of the mother and redeploy related clones from there. It works well to keep the machine day and bloating under control. The obvious drawback being any user installed apps would disappear, but it all depends on if you allow them this level of customization.

    Thank you, Andrew.

  • New installation of 6.1 of the Horizon. It is normal that provisioning linked clones will take a lot of time?

    Hello

First, I will describe my setup:

1 Management Server: Dell PowerEdge R730 48 cores, 2.5 Ghz with 9 drive HARD 300 GB SAS 15 K (RAID 5) and 256 GB of RAM

    2 hosts VDI server: Dell PowerEdge R730 48 cores, 2.5 Ghz with 9 drive HARD 300 GB SAS 15 K (RAID 5) + 1 SSD 200 GB, 256 GB of RAM, 2 K1 grid cards

1 unit number logic on a Dell Equallogic PS6110X (750 GB) where I put the masters.

    1 switch Dell N4032F (10 GB)

All the server has 4 10 GB ports configured with NPAR (so, I have virtual network card of 6 x 10 GB for storage and 6 virtual network adapter for the network of the VM) and 2-port 1 GB for the management.

My master: Windows 7 SP1 x 86 optimized with 24 GB HDD Thin-Provisionned (2 vCPU 2 GB of RAM, 3 VMXNET network Card). There is no application has added to this master.

I can't ask the Microsoft VMXNET 3 fix because it is said that this patch is not applicable.

I have no VSAN because that only 2 VDI hosts, so I set up my stock for each guest with local storage for the linked clones and SSD local for the replica.

When I run the provisioning of the office pool (17 VM):

The clone of the replica (Equallogic == > local SSD) aura 2'30 "... It's good for me (113 MB / s... the Equallogic is also used for another another LUN storage server)

But the rest of the entire operation completes the provisioning will take 40'.

More than 50% of carrots is around 100% of the CPU on the host.

I tried to change my (9 disc hard + 1 spare) RAID5 to RAID10 (10 HDD). It will take 50'.

And, when all of the operations are completed. I have 2 or 3 VM with the message: Agent unreachable and 1 or 2 crashes on the provisioning.

One recompose your desktop one VM will take about 1'30.

My question: it is normal that commissioning will take so much time?

And another question: when I'm connected to a virtual desktop computer with customer Horizon during a pool commissioning, the freezing of the VM or I can't just plug. Although I Office ready. And sometimes, vCenter client will freeze to a large number of seconds during deployment

    Have someone idea?

PS: Sorry for my approximate English ;-)

Solution: I replaced the lsi_mr3 of storage vmware with the driver megaraid_perc9 driver.

Thanks to ddewire for his help.

  • Best practice help to spend again vCenter with linked Clones

    Hello everyone

I searched for days, but couldn't find a way clear of hover over our view 5.2 installation of a new vCenter.  The equipment was aging, and we decided to upgrade and move to 5.5.

We have rebuilt and forwarded via our guests not VDI to the new vCenter 5.5 environment. I found a few documents, but nothing that tells us if it can be done actually.

We tried to go in the service of the composer initially to the new instance of vCenter and maintenance, we do the DB on the old Victoria Cross, if it worked I émigrerait the DB above the new Victoria Cross

We first tried these steps however VMware Documentation Library after removing the old VC service composer and installed on VC New (with ODBC connections mapped to the old VC) it wouldn't work.  We were moving to the VC 5.1 leaving guests ESXi running VDI attached to 5.1

Then I did more research and discovered the related clones are all related to the database of the old VC and moving them is not possible per this KB KB VMware: workstations managed by moving between servers view vCenter is not supported

I saw an article here that suggested dumping a bunch of DB and rebuild the new VC with the same name and IP address, but I can't do so because the new instance is already upwards and on a new host name / IP migrate view VCenter (with linked Clones) to new hardware

I also found this where someone is in the same boat and suggested to recreate pools.  The discussion is not in the details so I wonder if someone can clarify this: migration View Composer and vCenter

I have about 20 people on VDI in a combination of clones using 3 connected pools and personal drives.  Given that all the info from linked clone was linked to the former base of VC, it doesn't seem wise to move it to the wire.  This would be possible: I still have the base image with all the snapshots for each pool.

    • Persistent backup drives
    • Note the configuration of each pool
    • Disable the commissioning
    • Create DB on VC 55 composer vacuum
    • Create the ODBC connection for composer on VC 55
    • **
    • Do more ESXi hosts to 55 VC
    • Remove existing VMs (will be not able to connect to them at this point anyway)
    • Remove the old VC entry admin view / delete existing pools
    • Install the composer on 55, and then tap new ODBC
    • Create new instance vCenter in Admin 55-pointing mode
    • Recreate pools
    • Import and attach persistent disks (http://pubs.vmware.com/view-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.view.administration.doc/GUID-BDFCCEC8-682F-4421-8810-06108CBE8D20.html)
    • Recreate events empty DB on 55
    • Reconfigure the parameter DB events in Admin mode

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't find an exact way to do

Well, I'm pleased to say it worked! I had a few problems by removing existing pools. View repeated deletion but nothing happened. In the end I had to use ADSIedit to connect to the server to manually remove all the old discs VM and pool

After the installation of the composer on the VC 5.5, I was able to create a login in admin mode and then start to re - create the pools.

We were able to successfully reattach each disc persistent owners planned.  Did some spot checks and desktop users, bookmarks etc. all worked

It is a tedious process, but it does not work. I hope that VMware can create an article for it.  God knows that I searched for days, I had to read a lot of things just for this plan.

  • Add annotations when you create a linked clone

    Hi all

I am currently struggling with a script that should be able to add an annotation to a clone linked after its creation. To create a linked clone, I use the vmlinkedclone.pl script (source here: http://pastie.org/5114877 ), with a bit of modification to my needs feet. On the other hand, I have a script that writes an annotation on a specified, virtual computer writedescription.pl (source here: http://pastie.org/5114881)

Now the problem is that my script that write annotations on a specified, virtual computer takes the name of the virtual machine as a parameter, I want to avoid. So, what I want to do is to "mix" my vmlinkedclone script and my writedescription script, so I can dynamically add an annotation after creating a clone (the annotation is a parameter in the script).

However, as you can see on my writedescription script, I'm working on a view of a virtual machine, while on my vmlinkedclone script, I have no opinion on the clone, I have yet nothing about it, read the 250 on the vmlinkedclone pastie line. So my question is fairly simple: how could I get a view of my newly created clone, so I can easily fit my other script to add an annotation to the clone via the vm_id parameter?

    Thank you very much

It actually returns the new ManagedObjectReference of VM, you must call get_view() on it to get the actual VM and its properties.

Take a look at the quick example I have attached.  It shows how to retrieve and convert the result of ManagedObjectReference with CloneVM_Task() and CloneVM() in a VirtualMachine entity.

    $ perl CloneVMExample.pl--username=administrator@vlab--server = 172.16.254.50 - password = VMware1! -vmname = SourceVM - dcname = DC01
New machine virtual 'CloneVM () - Test' cloned successfully at CloneVM().
    CloneVM_Task() completed successfully.
New machine virtual 'CloneVM_Task () - Test' cloned successfully at CloneVM_Task().
  • Rokie question: better understand the clone process related

    Hello

I've been assessing the view for awhile, I have a few questions about the big picture behind the view.

follow-up is my understing. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

We will use XP as an example.

    1. I create image main the XP machine using vcenter server.

    2. shut down the computer, create a snapshot.

3 using the vconnection server, create new linked clone pool with 50 related clones.

    4. the pool will use the snapshot as a base image.

    5. in the creation starts, I can see from the window of the vsphere client, it creates a folder called

    VMwareVewComposerReplicaFolder

    and created a replica.

    Replica-8skdjfh-2343-sdjf-ksjdf-skjdfhsdj02

    6. Once this replica has been correctly created, 50 linked clone created subsequently fairly quickly...

    7. after a few restarts, all 50 XP machine created with success, and vconnection screen shows 'available. '

8 Note that each of the 50 XP machines will have it's own snapshot created automatically during the process.

so my understanding is, the basic picture of these 50 machines will be this guy?

    Replica-8skdjfh-2343-sdjf-ksjdf-skjdfhsdj02

just for the bag of the argument, let's say when all 50 machines are powered, I deleted that line from the file, which

happen? What happens if I reboot the XP machine, is that he needs this replica file in order to properly

Start? my understanding for linked clone is all the 50 machines share the same kernel of something, which is why we use

that it saves a lot of space, etc.

in other words, for example, if I want to do Windows update for all machines of 50, I boot image master machine XP,.

finish the Windows Update, stop, create a snapshot2. later I snapshot pickup 2, redial the

any pool, all 50 machines would receive the same updates of Windows. my understanding is the windows

updated in fact only applied to the file of the replica, not all the 50 machines individually. Am I wrong?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think it's very important for the best under the notice.

All 50 machines will use the file replica and if you were to remove that they would be more work.   If you want to use Windows Update the parent windows update, version ip online, would you stop and create a new snapshot.   Once it was over, you can recompose the pool which would create a new replica with the updated patches.  The workstations that have been laid would be associated with the new replica.

  • Questions of design related-Clone

    Hello world

I have a few questions regarding best practices for the design of a display environment that allows to use linked clones. In my scenario, I'm targeting two departments for a test pilot. The applications they use are similar, what is different is the shortcuts of the browser that would be generally install on their physical desktop deployment of the machine. I would rather them on one parent VM, so that they are not lost during a refresh. My question is, guys/ladies normally create a VM parent for each Department, or you just make a statue, take a snapshot for an apps to departments, and then revert to the original install different applications and then take another cliché?

My second question is about snapshots. If I plan to not make use of WSUS and install the updates on the parent VM and then recompose (to keep the smaller delta records) it is common to start initial snapshot by an anchor, then once you install new ms updates take an another snapshop... and then once you confirm that everything works correctly You can delete the original snapshot of base? I'm still new to vsphere and instant, so I just need to better understand

    As always, thank you

    Mike

I think your best bet is to integrate as much as possible in your VM base.  This way you can patch the VM basis and then create new snapshots for each pool.   The problem here and I speak from experience, is that when your snapshot of pool turns is so different from the base image it is simply easier to patch this particular snapshot and then create the new snapshot.   Then you have a problem you describe where you can return each snapshot and install the updates.

If you want to have a parent VM for each Department and then use a provisioning that will reduce your wasted space.    Also remember that you can use the same snapshot to different pools so if two departments use the same applications then you can use this snapshot for both.

  • EBS 12.1.3: a few questions about cloning

    Hello

We have EBS 12.1.3 on AIX 7.1.

A few questions about the cloning of level shared environment of application layer non-shared application environment. We followed 'Cloning Oracle Applications V12 with rapid Clone [ID 406982.1]'

    Environment (shared application layer) source:
-Two nodes in the active application and LBS
-A database of active and a passive database configuration with Oracle Data Guard.
-Terminate SSL at the load balancer
    -Updated CFP implementation

Environment target (level app not shared):
-A single node of the application active
    -One data node active
    -Without SSL
    -No PCP

After the cloning was completed, we noticed the following problems in the target system:

    (1) home page is not available because application $CONTEXT_FILE layer always contains the endpoint "https" and ssl settings.

    Workaround solution:

Change (with text editor) layer Application $CONTEXT_FILE as follows.
    < webentryurlprotocol oa_var = "s_webentryurlprotocol" custom = "yes" > http < / webentryurlprotocol >
    < sslterminator oa_var = "s_enable_sslterminator" > # < / sslterminator >
    < login_page = "s_login_page" custom = 'yes' oa_var > http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000/OA_HTML/AppsLogin < / login_page >
    < externURL oa_var = "s_external_url" custom = "yes" > http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000 < / externURL >

Run the automatic configuration service and application layer.

Is there a better solution and supported for this?

    (2) simultaneous managers do not work properly, because they still have old names of node (used in the CFP in the source system). The solution is used:

    1. connect to the EBS GUI web and delete all nodes of all concurrent managers.
2 shutdown application layer. Check that all concurrent managers have been extinguished. If not, kill the process manually
    3. as a user apps run cmclean.sql
    4 restart the application layer

Is there a better solution for this?

    (3) database ARCHIVELOG mode nonarchivelog mode changes in the target system. Is anyway to prevent this?

    (4) in addition, we would like to make a full clone (app + db levels) of production without closing the application. Is this possible? What would be the best documents to describe it? In Production, we have Oracle Data Guard physical standby installation as per "Note technique Oracle: Business Continuity for Oracle E-Business release 12 Using Oracle 11g Physical Standby Database [1070033.1 ID]. This can be used when executing a clone of warm for the database, right? What application layer? The steps in 406982.1 include AutoConfig in what application level should be running down. Must the application be broken when running "to maintain the Snapshot information?"

    (5) one last question (not related to cloning). Oracle Enterprise Manager console webUI has recently stopped working in IE8. For example, https://myhost.mydomain.com:5501 / em gives "cannot display the Page. It was working properly last week. In Firefox, the same link works fine. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

    BR,
    TH

No, you must modify the context manually and run the automatic configuration.

Is there a better solution for this?

You follow the best approach. You could update the details of the server node if you wish.

    (3) database ARCHIVELOG mode nonarchivelog mode changes in the target system. Is anyway to prevent this?

By default, the quick Clone will create the target in noarchivelog mode database.

    (4) in addition, we would like to make a full clone (app + db levels) of production without closing the application. Is this possible? What would be the best documents to describe it? Fix.

What application layer? The steps in 406982.1 include AutoConfig in what application level should be running down. Must the application be broken when running "to maintain the Snapshot information?"

You can copy the files from the application tier node, while demand is rising. And, there is no need to stop the application to run "to maintain the Snapshot information."

If it works from a browser, then it should not be a problem of EM. Have you tried another client and see if it works? Have you changed a setting in your Internet Explorer browser? Please make sure you add the URL of the EM to the list of trusted sites.

    Thank you

  • where to post a question about iTunes on the iPhone?

I have a question about a problem with iTunes on the iPhone (iOS), but I do not see a 'Community' with this title (or anything close;  I have no idea what "iTunes U" means).

For lack of a better idea, I just posted to the community "iTunes for Mac", but I don't think that's true.

Please let me know where I should post to an iTunes on iPhone issue.  Thank you.

It should probably be posted in the community Using iPhone Apple Support communities. I'll ask a host spend your question in iTunes for Mac, if it has not already been moved.

EDIT: Just read your message, and I think it's probably better where it is (because you need help syncing your songs via iTunes on your Mac). He should be fine here, but if the moderators believe that he should be somewhere else, they will move for you.

  • Question about "Windows 8.1 DG to Windows 7 Pro 64-bit" and Windows product key

I have acquired a recnet ThinkPad T450 fdrom a retialer online (NCIX) and I hav ea a few questions about the installed Windows operating system.

Before I just go further, HRE are some information about my particular system.

    Lenovo ThinkPad T450

    Model: 20BV00BUS

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4300U

    RAM: 4 GB

Under the product description, it was stated "Windows 8.1 DG Windows 7 Pro 64." My understnading, the ThiknPad has been installed with Windows 8.1, but downgraded to Windows 7. There is also a Windows 8 Pro badge sticker at the bottom of the matchine.

Is it possible, at the end of the user/consumer, to alter the functioning ti repressive back Windows 8.1?

Can I create a recovery with Windows 8.1 disk?

A separate but related matter relates to the Windows product key.

I noticed the Ultrabook do not come with a sticker / label with the Windows product key (i.e. COST). Some quick research indicated that the Windows key is programmed into the BIOS.

This indeed true (I wish an audit)?

The key is visible in some way (for when you need to reinstall the operating system. I have not tried to enter the BIOS at the moment)?

Thank you for taking the time to consider my question.

    Kind regards

    Victor L.

    Hi Victor,

I'm in the same boat as you type, but want to keep the facilities of Windows 7 rather than pass them to 8. Just like you, I buy our Lenovo from different retailers and they come with windows 7 installed through the Windows 8 lower upgrade program.

We had one or two laptops come with a recovery media (for windows 8/8.1 only) but have noticed that all laptops now come with no physical media or codes for the recovery. WIN8 stickers, you described is more came with the license key on the sticker (it comes to stop you using the same license again and again, microsoft will get more money if you buy another license etc.). I also saw that the key is essentially located in the BIOS but were not able to test what we use any of windows 8. I use it even at home!

To answer your question, you can get a recovery of Lenovo for Windows 8 media!

Go to the following link: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/lenovorecovery

(It help you understand why this method is used on this page as well)

    Select Start,

Please have your serial number of your laptop, (to find it go to this link: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/find-product-name)

If you qualify (which you will very probably) Lenovo will ship for free, recovery disks give it a go, took me 2 minutes.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards, Max.

  • A Question about debugging...

    Hi all

I have a question about debugging - specific probes. Is it possible to link and save the values on a wire (with a probe) which is a loop for the loop counter (or even a secondary value)?

When I'm debugging code to a state machine that I often more easy to wire to the top of the State and the value, I am interested in a cluster, and then use 'generation antenna' and a registry change to add this element to each loop. I could also do this by indexing just out of the loop too.

Once execution completes etc that I can look at the table (either using an indicator or a problem) to see what has happened to the value to each State/loop. And often, I know exactly where my code was wrong.

My question is: is there a way to do this using regular probes without having to build an array? So, for example, I probe a digital wire and get a table of responses rather than just the last value on the wire?

    Thank you

    Dave

I found this nugget that does exactly what I want - it's a custom probe developed by Darren.

This post on the Exchange of ideas gives to think it should be at least provided with the package LV either integrated in the dev environment. Well worth voting for!
