Question about VMware Foundation Acceleration Kit

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't get frequent on licenses for the stuff. Ive looked at the PDF licenses and below shows the paragraph that confuses me a little. The Foundation acceleration Kit only allows you to run ESXi?

Ive got 2 sites that I need installation, one with 1 x VC server. 2 x with 2 x cpus esx hosts each and another site running a different copy of VC, 1 host ESX x with 2 x CPus.

What would be the best option?

+

VMware Infrastructure 3 Foundation acceleration Kit

+

includes three licenses of VMware Infrastructure 3 Foundation.

It's VMware ESXi, VMware Consolidated Backup,

VMware Update Manager VMware Virtual SMP, VMware

VMware VMFS and VirtualCenter agent. They also include

Server VMware VirtualCenter Foundation, which provides

VMware Guided Consolidation and the ability to manage up to

three hosts Server VMware Infrastructure 3.

Non-it allows you to run ESX or ESXi - the only thing you need is another license server VC since the acceleration kit only comes with one license of VM - Foundation

    Dear all,

I am new in this area, we intend to deploy vmware 5 in our environment by using the HA, I am a student in this regard. I have a few questions about this, I need assistance by experts in this field:

-J' read the vmware network redundancy is strongly recommended for the configuration of vmware HA, but I haven't fully?

-When vmware HA is configured and there are two hosts in the cluster, now when creating a new machine virtual, I need to specify under which host this new virtual machine must reside OR the HA feature will automatically decide on that?

-When vmware HA is set up and I have two hosts in cluster, a host processors 4physical and 8 GB of RAM, the other host is also even have 4 physical processors and 8 GB of RAM, so for me which are the sets of resources will be presented? I will be display individually for each host resources when you create a new virtual machine, OR I will be presented with a SUM of resources 1 + 2 host resources to play?

-Is it possible that I assigned 4 vCPU virtual machine and 4 GB Mem and it uses little resources from host 1 and few resources to host 2, as 2 vCPU to host 1 and 2 GB and still host 2vCPU 2 and remains 2GB (given that I am presented with the SUM of the cluster as mentioned in my second question resources)

-J' read operating system failure when in vmHA particular VM will be restarted on the same host it resides, that means? If the BONE broke down, then when new virtual machine starts, it will be also having fallen copy of OS? I mean how this new machine will be launched, it's a copy identical secondary virtual machine crashed?

    Waiting for your help.

    Kind regards
    Jocelyn

OK, consider cases that I am only using HA and no DRS, in this case I need to specify under what host to run VM?

I read the first question again, then please, let me make this clear. When you create a new virtual machine, you must always specify a host and storage.

Initial investment (when you are powering on a virtual machine) is a feature of the Drs without DRS a virtual machine can only be migrated to another host manually or with the virtual machine shut down (cold migration) or using vMotion (if allowed).

But because of an event leading to the crash of the OS reboot also not solve the problem, correct me if I understood? This is also true for FT?

You're right, HA can restart only a virtual machine. If there is a serious issue that causes the BONE invited to plant that regularly, this is not enough and you have to solve the problem manually. FT cannot resolve as she makes it "mirrors" the guest to another host, so it will also reflect a BSOD.

Yes, FT has still some limitations. However, there are use cases where availability is important and FT is designed to ensure continuous availability in the event of a crash the host.

  • Question about VMware Converter traffic

    Hi all

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I do a P2V on a physical server in site A and destination ESXi host is also at the site. However, the field 'destination' in the VMware converter must be the vCenter server which is on the Site B (via a 6 MB WAN connection) as the destination host is managed by a vCenter server. My question is if I use the server vCenter (located on a WAN connection) as a destination and then choose the host located on the local site in the converter, converter traffic flow over the WAN? Or is it just flow locally from the Source to the Destination and just use the vCenter server as a server of type "authentication" for the initial Setup?

And as a side note, if I set the destination host ESXi as a destination in the converter instead of the vCenter server, I get the error indicated in this KB. http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & externalId = 2012310

With the help of converter 5.5.1

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello

Traffic passes from the source computer to the destination ESX. You will have a small slowdown in the wizard before you start converting mainly to get the VC inventory. See the graphics in the user pp. 11-13 guide

    Concerning

P.S. If you want to V2V, keep the server converter on site A, too as in this case, that the data passes through it.

  • A few questions about VMware tools and U2 of ESXi 4.0 and 4.1

In my workplace, there is a cluster of vSphere 4 six nodes containing 5 servers ESXi 4.0 U2 (4.0.0, 261974) and a server ESXi 4.1 (4.1.0, 260247).  Aparently, it was built that way in the environment concept then deployed into production and now I head for VMware deployment.  This environment is up in producgtion now for over 8 months with this configuration, but starting to be more widely used.  Ideally, I know, we should have all the nodes on the same patch level, but here's the question.

Models used to get the operating system to the virtual machines in this environment were built on the apparently new 4.1 server using this version of VMware tools (Version 8.3.2 build-257859).  All so most of the running virtual machines, use this version of VMware tools.  Using this new version of VMware tools on a virtual machine running on a server ESXi 4.0 U2 ESXi would cause issues?  ESXi 4.0 U2 servers push version 4.0.0 build 261974 of the VMware tools, identical to the ESXi version.  The status of the VMware tools when the new 4.1 version is running on a host of U2 4.0 still shows as OK and we have operated this way for more than 8 months.

Another problem is that we have still a few other virtual machines with the 4.0 build U2 VMware tools so when these virtual machines will eventually be VMotioned to an ESXi 4.1 host, VMware tools show as outdated.

Until we can get of planned downtime to upgrade the servers, it should be like that for several weeks if possible.  We have HL7 interfaces on many of these virtual machines that are not too good with VMotion and being in an organization of health care, sometimes difficult to get downtime.  It is perhaps more possible to downgrade the only host to 4.0 U2 until we can plan time to upgrade all hosts.  I would keep the node in the cluster, even if for the moment, assuming that to release 4.1 with other guests at 4.0 U2 should not cause problems, since we can use the resources of that node in this cluster.

Until then, ensuring that all the virtual machines in the cluster use the ESXi version 4.1 of the VMware tools (Version 8.3.2 build-257859) would be acceptable?  I just wanted to check that this version should be fully backwards compatible with the previous version of ESXi 4.0 U2, and as I mentioned before, its run like that and have noticed yet all the problems and the status of the VMware Tools also records OK when this new version works on ESXi 4.0 U2 host computer.  I just wanted some feedback from those of the community.

    Thank you

Exactly, do you VMotion, virtual host 4.1 machine and if necessary would upgrade the VMware tools. To install VMware tools, it is necessary to restart the virtual machine.

And another option that I say is the first upgraded version of all hosts ESXi4.0 U2 to 4.1, after that, you do an upgrade in the tools of all virtual machines vmware.

    Perfect.

    You´re are welcome!

  • Question about VMware Tools when upgrading of vSphere 5.1 to 5.5

We are the vSphere upgrade 5.1 to 5.5. We have still a few virtual machines with obsolete tools VMware vSphere 4.  There problems upgrade to vSphere 5.5 and then upgrade VMware Tools on those virtual machines to the version 5.5?  Or should we upgrade VMware Tools version 5.1 first before doing the upgrade to vSphere 5.5? We need plan restarting downtime when upgrading to VMware Tools on those virtual machines and would rather not upgrade VMware Tools twice and planning two stops

There is no problem, as vSphere ESXi 5.5 supports the VM running older versions of VMware Tools.

  • Questions about VMware View

Hi, I need to provide always on desktops to remote 50 users. I have been using VMware workstation to provide these desktop computers, but it was a temporary solution that is quick and easy.

I started by installing the free ESXi which works fine except that these virtual machines are running an application that requires DirectX. When reading information VMware views looks like it's maybe the solution I need, but I can't say if she can provide always on workstations or if desktop computers are provided according to the needs. My 2nd concern is cost. I don't mind spending the money for VMware View, but looks like I have to have seen running in AD and that it will require me to install many other products such as VMware infrastructure 3.5. Someone has some good links to install VMware View and the provisioning of desktops?

When you purchase View 4.5, business or first, you get ESX and vSphere vCenter / I.  If you are supported on this part.  You don't need to buy that separately.

With respect to reviews, the guides are:

To start using the doc started get: http://pubs.vmware.com/view45/ol/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=get_started/t_getstarted.html

http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/VMware-View45-evaluators-Guide.PDF -> is excellent for your POC on VMWare View.

    http://www.vmware.com/pdf/view45_installation_guide.pdf -> installation guide.

You will need to have Active Directory in your environment.  View is used to automatically configure your desktop to your users.

If you use clones of link or local mode (the ability to check your workstations), then you will need to Prime Minister, Enterprise edition will be beneficial.

    Hope this helps,

  • A few questions about VMWare HA

    Hello everyone,

I would like to tell you my ideas on VMWare HA.

I have two ESX servers. Each of them, I have:

    • vSwicth0 (vmnic1 + vmnic 3):

      • The VM network

      • Service console

    • vSwicth1 (vmnic0 + vmnic 2):

      • VMotion VMkernel

      • NetApp VMkernel (iSCSI storage)

      • NetApp Console service

When I stop one of the two servers, powered on virtual machines migrate to another.

I read on vmware documentation for VMWare HA, there are two cases:

    • failure (for example, stop the server)

    • response of isolation (Console of Service not responding)

I tried to follow all the recommendations of VMWare by adding another Console of dedicated Service for HA on a different subnet, but I failed to run the response of isolation procedure.

I see my virtual machines 'disconnected' and I can't turn them off as I have it configured in HA.

I would like to virtual machines to migrate when vmnic1 or vmnic0 + vmnic 3, vmnic 2 is declining. Is this possible?

If so, is there something that I misunderstood on HA or a mistake in my setup?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Since you have with a SC vSwitch0 and vSwitch1 with a SC, both will be down for things to be isolated. It's not one or the other, but both. You can assign up to have one, but don't not one or the other, one or both.

  • VMware vSphere Advanced Acceleration Kit

How does VMware vSphere Acceleration Kit advanced work? How many guest support? I have two servers at once with 2 quad core processors. I would like to implement the two servers with a tolerance for vcenter and fault, then add a third server that is identical. This package will work for me?

We currently have kits essentials in place on two other servers. The essential kit clearly states its for 3 guests (max 2 CPUs per host) and 6 cores per processor

This package should work just fine, but we want tolerance fault for our new configuration. That's why I'm leaning towards VMware vSphere acceleration Kit Advanced.

    Thank you

    Joe

As you have already mentioned, the Kits Essentials are limited to 3 guests. That's all.

Acceleration Kits are reduced start-up kits which contain regular licenses. You can only buy 1 of these kits per location. The Advanced acceleration Kit includes vSphere Advanced 6 processors and vCenter Server Foundation. You can use the licenses processor you want, for example for the guests of CPU of 3 x 2 or 1 x 2 CPU + 1 x 4 CPU... If you need more guests and 3 then you can upgrade the License Server Foundation of vCenter to vCenter Server Standard and purchase additional processor licenses. See http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/buyvsphere-acceleration-kits.html

As far as I know there are options to upgrade Essentials more to the acceleration of advanced kit. Ask your VMware reseller for more details.

  • Question of VMWare Fusion

I currently use Parallels Desktop and have a question about VMWare.

VMWare Fusion provides any software to the virtual machine which is necessary for integration with OS X?

(Parallels made - self-installing Stardock MyColors on Windows VMs without opportunity to decline - have to uninstall later)

    I was wondering.

The only VMware Fusion software will install automatically when creating a Machine virtual Windows is VMware Tools and it usually automatically starts, but can usually be cancelled although unless you try to isolate completely the host comments then I'd let VMware Tools installed.

  • A new doubt on the license - VMware vSphere Essential Kit

    Hi guys,.

I play virtualize physical servers in the company I work (about 10 smaller servers).

To start some tests, I bought a Dell r.620 server with two processors and 64 GB of RAM.

I think buy just one license of VMware vSphere Essential Kit, just to test some features, management, and support provided by VMware.

My doubt is: to support all the RAM (64 GB), I have purchase a license of the vSphere Essential Kit, or I need TWO?

I'm a little confused on how much physical RAM memory on a single server, the vShpere Essential Kit can handle.

OK, I know I can use a free version. But this test server will be transformed into a production server, and that the price of the vSphere Essential Kit is very good, I would buy it and start my test as a test of "production"...

Guys, sorry for my bad English, it is not my mother tongue. =(

    Thanks much for any help.

    Hi Alex,

Since you are doing a test on a single server so a Kit should be good at this point. In addition to Essential Kit do not fully support 64 GB of RAM so no need to buy two. Only the free versions have limits in support of only 32 GB of RAM.

Diagram below will give you a good idea on the different Kits.

  • Question about the subscription renewal for vSphere lab Essentials home

First post on the forum here.  My apologies if this isn't the right place for a question like this.

I have a lab at home that I have set up using the "VMware vSphere 5 Kit Essentials" that I had bought on the VMware online store.  It was a pretty fun because it let me familiarize themselves with the technology that I use at work without the same consequences for the mistakes of the project.

To be honest though, I have never much thought about support and subscriptions for it... Setup should really just have to learn and be the main server for my house projects.  The cost for me to buy the Kit of Essentials has been a little more than $500 a year ago, and it seems that my still currently active subscription (my account displays "subscription only" for the Essentials Kit) allows me to download the latest patches and maybe even upgrade to a new major version in the future.  I would like to continue the subscription, as this seems to be more profitable that leave on the subscription and then renew... compared to the initial $ 500, a one or three year renewal looks pretty good - and I'd get to continue to be on the latest versions of the vSphere Essentials.

I thought it would be as simple as clicking on renew somewhere on my account, but that begins to not look like an option.  I think that I am driven to get in touch with a business partner for the subscription renewals (is this sounding right?).  This seems a bit much for me for a small laboratory at home like mine.  Is the only way to renew a subscription via a partner company?  If I'm completely off track here, please let me know.  If I'm here, does anyone know (or recommend) a partner company that manages small renewals as mine would be?

Maybe I'm hesitant for nothing, but I thought I would ask those who understand the subscription and support better than me.

Thank you very much for the help!

    Dan

To answer my own question, I discovered that for users with contracts less than $3,000... is it possible to make a renewal online without the need to go through a partner.  It turns out that the link to the online renewal page is available through the 60, 30, 15 days notice in advance of the emails that are sent to the holder of the account (which is how I found it).  The page renewal me related to this FAQ PDF that I found useful.  I was able to successfully renew my subscription from the link.

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/myvmware/VMware-online-renewals-FAQs-en.PDF

The important bits for me were the following (from the FAQ):

    ====

Q: clients access renewals online from VMware.com or My VMware?

A: access to the online renewal platform is by a "direct link" sent to clients through the electronic communication of renewal.

Q: when VMware will send me the link of renewal online?

R: the link for customers to renew online will appear on reminders e-mail sent 60-30-15 days prior to the expiration of the contract.

Q: can customers renew all contracts renewal online?

A: customers will be able to renew those contracts to a total value of less than $3,000 USD only. Customers will have the option of

move to a higher level of service, or a longer term, as you wish.

    ====

Hope that helps future lab home amateurs like me.

  • Lab Manager acceleration kits / required licenses?

    Hello!

We are currently using ESXi and plan to move to centralized test Lab Manager lab. The estimates are based on the acceleration kit that used to be available at about 4-5 k €, which seemed to include VI 3 licenses that are required for the Lab Manager to run on top of ESXi (or if whatever the basis ESXi does not support).

Now I can't find the acceleration kits more 'Buy Lab Manager', instead I find licenses for Lab Manager only.

Now I read everywhere that the vCenter is necessary and even messages that describe that vCenter foundation is not sufficient to run the laboratory Manager. However no official 'that's what you need to do if you want to get Lab Manager' running.

To be honest, if the acceleration kits were gone for good, licensing begins to be as clear as some States large company in their regulatory policy, "must be this version of the database server", but do not worry to mention what license you need for the said server or background Windows server...

I would like to know the price of 'minimum' (to continue) Lab Manager on top of bare metal, start-up costs and maintenance renewals when the initial support runs.

With regard to reading, 2 or 4 processors as it seems to count.

    BR,

    Kalle

Sorry, that seems so difficult.  To sort through all of this:

    • Lab Manager requires ESX Standard or Enterprise.  It does not currently run on ESXi, but it's on the Roadmap (cannot discuss dates here).

    • Lab Manager 3 requires vCenter (Lab Manager 2 does not work).

    • vCenter Foundation is untested, but should work (but can only manage up to 3 knots).

    • ESX Foundation is not supported by the Lab Manager.

    • The laboratory director is authorized by the node (the server Lab Manager is free).

    • Lab Manager Server runs on Windows Server 2003 and can run on a virtual machine

    • VirtualCenter runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or Windows Server 2003 and can also run on a virtual machine.

    Thus, the minimum subscription is:

    • ESX Standard for two processors

    • Lab Manager for two processors

    • vCenter Foundation

    • Windows licenses you need for the Lab Manager server and VirtualCenter Management Server.

Installing vCenter Management Server and server Lab Manager on the two virtual machines on this host ESX and use their local drive to store the virtual computer images.

Such a system doesn't scale well, of course.  When you size, you will need to add the following:

    • Shared storage (NFS, iSCSI, or FC)

    • More ESX and Lab Manager licenses

    • vCenter Standard or Premium, instead of Foundation.

    Hope this helps,

    Steven
