I have many external HDDs that were formatted in exFAT under WIndows XP Pro but my new system, completely updated Windows 7 Professional, I can't format external drives of exFAT. The option is NOT available. In the Format window, file system, is the only option: NTFS (default), there is no other option. I googled the * on this issue and found no answer. This external hard drive MUST be formatted as a disc exFAT. Period. Someone please help.

  I'm surprised the research online increase this... You can do it from the command prompt, but not from this dialog box.  Here's how:

  -Open a command prompt by typing cmd in the start/search box, right click on the cmd search result and select "Run as Administrator"
  -Type format g: FS:exFAT , then press ENTER to start formatting the G drive as exFAT
  To view all other options, type format /? and press ENTER.

  You can't recover unit under operating system running.

  Turn recovery media in the CD/DVD drive and disappears.
  Turn the unit by pressing the power button and immediately after that, press the C key
  Keep it down for a few seconds. This will force the unit to boot from the recovery media
  Follow the instructions on the screen

  Windows should be able to reformat a VMFS partition in the GUI. If this isn't the case, you can run the diskpart utility and erase the partition table on the disk.
