question of vCenter edition license + distributed switch

Hello

I want to clarifiy on vCenter license I have and what is it supposed to cover.

Background:

I bought the VI3 VirtualCenter license company a year ago. I upgraded the server vCenter vSphere4 a few weeks ago, and apply the code key that I found in my account on VMware.com. Up to present, so good, but he says my license VI3 VC has been converted with vSphere Standard.

The ESX servers are 4.0 enterprise.

-In looking at vsphere_pricing.pdf it seems now I have many features available, they are offered as advanced or Enterprise editions.

In the table below, I did few features "BOLD" I see clearly available and who are supposed to be higher than the standard packages.

Thus my confusion is - what license actually did I? Standard, as it says in the vCenter or higher license tab since obviously there are available features, which should not be in the standard?

vSphere Standard includes:

• VMware ESXi and VMware ESX (choice of the time of the deployment) 2

• VMware vStorage VMFS

• Four-way virtual SMP

• VMware vCenter Server Agent

• VMware vStorage API / VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)

• VMware vCenter Update Manager

VMware HA

• VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning

vSphere Advanced includes:

• VMware ESXi and VMware ESX (choice of the time of the deployment)

• VMware vStorage VMFS

• Four-way virtual SMP

• VMware vCenter Server Agent

• VMware vStorage API / VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)

VMware vCenter Update Manager

VMware High Availability (HA)

• VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning

VMware VMotion

• VMware hot add

• VMware Fault Tolerance

• VMware Data Recovery

• VMware vShield Zones

vSphere Enterprise includes:

• VMware ESXi and VMware ESX (choice of the time of the deployment)

• VMware vStorage VMFS

• Four-way virtual SMP

• VMware vCenter Server Agent

• VMware vStorage API / VCB

VMware vCenter Update Manager

* • VMware HA *.

• VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning

VMware VMotion

• VMware hot add

VMware Fault Tolerance

• VMware Data Recovery

• VMware vShield Zones

* • VMware Storage VMotion *.

VMware DRS

• VMware DPM

vSphere Enterprise Plus includes:

• VMware ESXi and VMware ESX (choice of the time of the deployment)

• VMware vStorage VMFS

• Eight-way virtual SMP

• VMware vCenter Server Agent

• VMware vStorage API / VCB

VMware vCenter Update Manager

* • VMware HA *.

VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning

VMware VMotion

• VMware hot add

VMware Fault Tolerance

• VMware Data Recovery

• VMware vShield Zones

VMware Storage VMotion

VMware DRS

• VMware DPM

• VMware vNetwork Distributed Switch

• VMware Host Profiles

Now the 2nd question (maybe I should have separated these, but I feel somehow it can be bound to the first)-when I create a distributed switch, the tab "hosts" is empty. I right click and select "add the host to the virtual switch distributed", but even once it gives me a window with no host has chosen.

Is a licensing issue or config problem?

If you have company VI3 then he improved to vSphere Enterprise.  And according to the characteristics you describe below, it looks like Enterprise license, that's what is activated in vCenter.  If you click on licenses in vCenter (Home\Administration\Licensing), see your Enterprise vSphere licenses?

Regarding distributed switches, this option is available in vSphere Enterprise Plus then you will not be able to use. If you need the functionality of Enterprise Plus there is a promotion running until December 15, which allows you to update your enterprise license to Enterprise Plus licenses for a significant discount.  You should talk with your dealer on this subject if you are interested...

  • VCenter virtual and distributed vNetwork

    Hi all

I have a virtual server Cetner and trying to add hosts to a vNetwork Distributed Switch, but I can't figure out how to get the server vCenter on vNetwork Distributed Switch.

As soon as I convert a multitude of vNetwork Distributed Switch that has the that vCenter server, I lose the vCenter Server connectivity.

Does anyone know how this can be done?

    Thank you.

I called support of vCenter performance in a distributed switch and they said to point blank, 'it is not supported. They said because vCenter governs the distributed switch environment, you can't have vCenter in the distributed switch. I had a few reservations about this statement, since the distributed switch exists on each individual host (although with less features than you have via vCenter).

We were able to get all the operational environment with switching distributed (including vCenter in the distributed switch)... but we had a problem when we needed to move equipment and necessary to stop all hosts (as well as all virtual machines). When systems come back online, all VM could see the end network (which means all VM connected to the distributed switch)... except vCenter. I could not vCenter to see the network until I moved to a standard vSwitch. Then, everything was good to do.

VMware said vCenter has be on standard vSwitch. At the end of the day, this isn't a big deal for us since we have four on board NETWORK card for uplink on every host connections... but it requires a slight redesign in the network configuration.

I hope this helps. If there is a solution (or if anyone has conflicting comments to what VMware support said), I'd love to hear it.

    Thank you!

  • Can I create with vSphere Enterprise Edition distributed vNetwork distributed switch?

From the following URL, I wonder whether we can create vNetwork distributed switch with our existing Enterprise Edition.

    http://www.VMware.com/products/vSphere/buy/editions_comparison.html

If the answer is YES, could any elaborate colleague on "Enabler for 3rd party switch support?  Currently, we use DELL switches.

    Thank you

as said Enterprise Plus license is necessary for a vNetwork Distributed Switch.  You can create one under Enterprise license, but don't be fooled, you can not use.

Maybe VMware one day will remove the ability to create even one based on the license model.

  • Question about distributed switching

Currently, we run a mix of ESX 4.0 host U2 and ESXi 5 U2.  vCenter is version 5.  Most host NIC are 1 GB.  vCenter virtual switches are configured as standard.  We must

reduce the number of ports Cisco asked our network group where they are at a premium.  Some tests were conducted using the VIRTUAL local area network ports.  Distributed switching

more that simply centralize network management in vCenter?  It does not reduce the number of NIC host ports or each host still must have his own physical

connections to networks, he needs to talk about?  What are others doing?  Thank you.

IT does not reduce the number of physical ports on the host - hosts still needs physical connections to the different networks / VLAN.

  • vCenter VDI Licensing questions

    Hello

Basically, my question is if a standard of vCenter license can manage hosts with VDI and Non - VDI workload without violating the EULA.

For a more detailed explanation, please see below:

Thank you very much in advance

    concerning

    Luis

    ----

    Environment:

    -vSphere 4

    -Cisco UCS

Customer has acquired the following licenses:

-1 vCenter server standard (Cisco OEM)

-vSphere Enterprise Plus for 16 cores (Cisco OEM)

also, as VDI will run on the VI client thus acquired a set of 5 view come with:

    -1 Server vCenter for VDI

-See the first 5 Add - on licenses (200)

-vSphere Enterprise more to View 5 (200)

The current implementation has a unique vCenter and 8 blades, divided into two groups:

-6 guests for Admin more application VMs

    -2 VMS VDI host

    Scenario has):

-If we use the vCenter VDI license, according to the "View4LicensingFAQ.PDF" of VMware, support Non - VDI running in a VDI VI is not allowed (see below)

Q: can I run other workloads from server on the vSphere which is included in the view?

A: No. vSphere and vCenter beam view components are limited to desktop deployments.  A desktop virtual machine is defined as a virtual machine that is running the following operating systems:

Windows 95/98, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista business, or Windows Vista business, Windows 7.

The only exception to this rule are the elements that make up the virtualized infrastructure Fund (View Manager, vCenter Server, a Broker for the connections and/or management and tools used for Virtual Machine (s) of Office ESX hosted within an operating system of a server performance monitoring only).  Download the EULA here for details http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/.

    Scenario B):

-If we use the Standard-vCenter vCenter license, according to the "View4LicensingFAQ.PDF" of VMware this is not recommended (see below)

Can Q: you the customer mix vSphere hosts who have licenses from the beams of the view and vSphere license via vSphere la carte?

R: a mixed environment is not recommended because there is risk of workloads server live-migration of a cluster of vSphere (via VMware vMotion™) in a scenario of disaster recovery for a license to view vSphere host, what would constitute a violation of the EULA. Guests are asked to keep their separate environments or buy to the map view to entitle the deployment of a mixed environment vSphere, vCenter, and licenses.

Leaving apart from the facts that:

-View licenses need to be reclassified from vSphere5 in vSphere4

-The client may have bought more than necessary licenses

    My thoughts are:

    • -I have not read anywhere that the use of a Standard-vCenter to cover the VDI and the workload of Non - VDI is not possible at the technical level.
    • -I'm not 100% sure that it is aligned with the EULA
    • -Similar situation for ESXi hosts accommodation VDI VMs licenses

If you use the view bundle vCenter only VDI workloads are allowed.    If you use vCenter who bought outside of the whole of the display, you can run anything you want with it.

  • Distributed Switch vs switch Standard

    Hey all,.

I was wondering if someone could answer some questions for me on distributed switches. I've worked with vmware for a few years now, but believe it or not I've never configured a distributed switch. The environment I work in always used standard switch, and when you're dealing with people who have the mentality of "if it ain't broke...". ', it is easy to become complacent. Everything in my environment is 5.1 incidentally.

I read various articles on capacity now, but I don't have a test environment to break, so I have to pay attention to any changes I make. I thought it was better to ask those who are familiar with him before deciding on future changes.

-What I lose any host on network management (what I used with switches std) as soon as I create a distributed switch?

-Distributed is vCenter wide switching, or can I create several switches distributed by cluster, or only with certain subnets included?

-What happens when I add a new host in a cluster with a distributed switch? It is automatically get set up with the distributed Switch networking capabilities?

-Are there pitfalls or problems I should be aware, either when creating a distributed switch or in the day-to-day management of the/them?

-What is the best thing that I win? Worse, I've lost?

    Thanks for your comments.

    Hello

    To answer your question:

    (1) so you don't lose everything as soon as you create the switch. You can create a vDS (assuming that licenses) at any time and configure / play with him. Until connect you hosts and uplinks, so it is a pretty useless component in vCenter.

    (2) a vDS is wide vcenter. However, you can create them individually if oyu want. That is to say - one for the traffic of comments, one for management, one for storage.  You can also have them by cluster if you REALLY want to and just add the hosts in this cluster in particular switch that you built. But reducing to zero the point of them a bit.

    (3) when you add the host, you will be asked what you want to use, if you want to migrate all the standard switch VMK interfaces and if you want to migrate VMs. ACE as soon as this host and its specific uplinks are on the switch then the host will be able to use the vDS for everything you have set for rising connections.

    (4) didn't really create them. Some people are a little cautious host management of investment (usually vmk0) on them, some people are not. In general, the rule is that with a vDS you can not manage it if vCenter is down. But with a vSwitch you can connect to the host directly and set it up in this way individually. There are traps in this respect of binding of static ports on the port groups, but it can be bypassed by the binding of ports muralism on the management ports group. Chris Wahl explains better than I've rambled

    (5) the best thing you can is to have a centralized management and create groups of ports. You have a new VLAN? Need a new group of port? Simply create once for the vDS and it applies to all guests! In addition, you also get control network IO, where you can assign actions to specific types of traffic and other goodies that are not available on standard switches. I would say that you lose much, vDS if you have the license and and a fairly large area are the way forward management. Trying to think really inconvenience but I can't!

    Happy to help you further!

  • vNetwork Distributed switches

I read somewhere that he said,

"The Cisco Nexus 1000V series is VMware Ready certified to be compatible with VMware vSphere as a vNetwork Distributed Switch with support for VMware ESX and ESXi hypervisors and integration with VMware vCenter Server"

My question is, can to impliment in vSphere 4 without vNetwork Distributed Switch Cisco Nexus 1000V.

    Thank you

Third VSwitches, such as the Nexus 1000V, need support to the vNetwork switches distributed.  This means that you must have the Enterprise + licenses for vSphere to take advantage of the Nexus.

The API used by the third-party switches distributed vNetwork is only for the distributed switches.

  • Virtual distributed switches

I'm trying to implement virtual switches distributed in vCenter. I created the distributed switch, then port groups. When I RT. Click the distributed switch > add a host, there is no available host. I have 3 hosts in a cluster, but I don't see one any of them. Any ideas how to add? We have a license from the company. Enterprise Plus it takes to add hosts? I think that would not allow you to add the distributed switch, if that were the case.

    Thank you

    Scott

According to this document , you must use more Ent license for dvSwitch.

I have a question, how have your host NIC and how many of them already used in VSS (Standard vSwitch)?

  • VMware Distributed Switch with VLAN

    Hi again,

A lot of work with VLAN now.

But just a quick Questions. Is there a documentation or HowTo Guides how to set up vSphare VMware Distributed Switch with several VLANS on a Switch GS724Tv4?

But soon, I try to add a host or network, it is empty.

This is probably an easy problem of VMware, but I try here first to see if someone has document guide HowTo so I can start with.

    Thank you

    Christian

    Never mind about this,

I found the problem on my own, but perhaps a documentation would be great to have. But it's a good start to have the right license of VMware, before you start.

  • Management on a distributed switch network

    Hey guys,.

I have a noob question - is there a problem given the management network for a distributed switch?
Someone has said that if I lose the vCenter for some reason, I won't be able to connect to hosts. It seems logical, but I'm not sure that's true.

    Thank you!

vCenter server unavailability will not stop manage you your ESXi host directly if you have migrated vmk management service VDS.

worst case, you have an option under Network Restore Options in DCUI from host to migrate vmk management back to vs.

When right click on data center to create the new vNetwork Distributed Switch, the menu is not able (gray color). How can I make new vNetwork Distributed Switch active?

    Thank you!

    George

To use vNetwork Distributed Switch, you need the license of vSphere Enterprise Plus.  Another version of vSphere does not include this feature.  You also need a vCenter Server license.

  • Configure VTEP VXLAN on distributed switch?

    Hello everyone

I've found this discussion: How to test VXLAN

    But I'm still not sure.

I environment vSphere 6 with a 3-node cluster and server vCenter (trial mode).

I would just try the VXLAN by adding a VTEP to a distributed switch.

For each of the nodes would be a VTEP.

I really should he use Manager of NSX and NSX controller etc. to achieve this, or is there the possibility to simply add a VTEP to a distributed switch?

    KR & thanks in advance!

You can use the last Director 5.5.3 vCloud and vCloud network and security 5.5.4, they are compatible and supported for ESXi/vCenter 6.0.

See VMware product interoperability Matrices or documentation of the respective product for more details.
