  • ESX 3.5 Update 5 versus question 4.1 VMotion ESX

    Good afternoon

I hope it's a small question, I'll try to be concise.

Basically I have an instance of Virtual Center 2.5 Enterprise (original version) with two ESX 3.5 knots (original also build... don't read any updated). DRS and HA are enabled.

We started to exceed two knots (about 40 guests between them) and we recently ordered two new servers. Since it is several years since our first installation, we cannot buy the same materials. My understanding is that ESX 3.5 and earlier did not play really well when you introduced different hardware (servers) in a cluster. I've heard say that ESX 3.5 Update 5 (besides being current and taken in charge) remedies this problem. Is this true?

Can I update my current environment ESX 3.5 update 5 and updated to Virtual Center 2.5 update 6 and then introduce some servers intel based more recent (but similar) in the cluster without any problems (ie. Invited VMotion between all ESX 4 nodes).

Upgrade to 4.1 is more than I can swallow in the next few days, as they would result at the end of next week. I guess I can go down the licensing of two new ESX Server (ESX 4.1 licenses have been purchased for these new servers).

    Thank you

    TMR

Am I right to assume that, in this perspective, ESX 3.5 U2 and ESX 4.1 will be will be the same in terms of CPU and EVC baselines (in other words, 4.1 has an advantage here).

Yes, it's a safe assumption.  VCA Mode automatically applies the best option of compatibility possible for you, regardless of the version of ESX.  It is strictly for the CPU compatibility.

  • LM 4.0.4 and vSphere ESX 4.1 update 2

Forgive me if someone has already asked this question, but I did not yet find a way to search just this particular forum compared to the VMware communities as a whole; This seems to be the only option using the search field in the upper right.

    Question:

For LM 4.0.4 release notes them public support for vSphere ESX 4.1 update 1.  Does anyone know if vSphere ESX 4.1 update 2 is still supported?

    Thank you!

    Kevan

If you check this, ESX(I) 4.1 U2 is supported with Labmanager 4.0.4.

  • VUM using up-to-date ESX 3.5 update 4.

    I have a 2 part question.

    1. I want to update our servers esx 3 update 1 update 4 through the Vmware update Manager.  I have a base created with ESX 3.5 Update 4 assigned to each Esx server ready for sanitation, but should I upgrade VCenter and VUM first before rolling on sanitation?

2 would you be upgradet Esx 3.5 Update 4 or go straight to vSphere4?

    My current setup for info:

    Virtual Center 2.1

    Up1 ESX 3.5 on 3 x HP DL460c G1 16 gb

    EVA4100_1

    Windows 2003 Ent VM 20

First of all, if you decide to keep your VI3, upgrade the server VC FRONT the ESX servers. It is not a good thing to have more recent than the server VC - ESXs and your UNIFIED messaging will also be more up-to-date.

If you have the opportunity to upgrade to vSphere, go ahead - you have many more benefits by using the new features and etc.

  • How do I upgrade to ESX 4.0 Update 2 to 4.0 3

Can someone provide me with a way to upgrade from ESX 4.0 update 2 to 4.0 update 3? I found that I can't do this by Vsphere update manager. I have the ESX - 4.0.0 - update03 - 398348.iso file you downloaded, do I need to burn this disc and put in there and start up to it? Who will provide a graphical user interface to upgrade? What are my options? I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thank you

    Jeff Koelker

You cannot use the ISO file to upgrade an ESX 4.0 host existing. This is only supported for ESX 3.5 Update 5 guests. Please, take a look at for example http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_u3_rel_notes.html (supported Upgrade paths to upgrade ESX 4.0 Update 3 host) to find out what options are available.

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5 update 4 to update 5

That I improve my ESX 3.5 update 4 update 5 hosts. You advise me to do a new installation or by selecting the upgrade option? When I choose the new facility, he told me that the following non-vmfs partitions will be removed. I choose OK for that? I have already disconnected the fiber cables going to the ESX host I'm upgrading. In addition, the upgrade to ESX 4 or 5 is not an option at this point.

    Thank you

If going 3.5 U4 U5, in my opinion, I'd go with just an upgrade, not a new build.

  • Y at - it an update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1?

    Dear friends;

I heard that VMware releases update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1. Could you please tell me if this is correct?

And would you please reference me this article?

ESX will not available in vSphere 5.0. It will be always supported in the same way that VI 3.5 is still supported, however. Here's an official blog stating that ESX 4.1 is the latest major version of ESX.

With the release of VMware vSphere 4.1, we announced that 4.1 will be the last version of vSphere to support the ESX and ESXi hypervisor architectures.

No Yes No problem. Just run 1) to ensure that things are OK before 2) who is the real thing. Maybe you want to go to ESXi as the next version would be communicated of ESXi only.

  • SSH with root does not not on new ESX 4.0 update 2 installation

I just installed ESX 4.0 Update 2 on two new HP servers. Everything works well except SSH access on the root account. I checked the users and the groups of Virtual Center that root is configured for Shell access, but when I try to SSH, it tells me access denied. I use the same password to try and SSH I use when I open as root on the Virtual Center, so I don't know the password is correct. Another way, it affects me is my backups. I use vRanger connection that requires SSH access to the ESX box and currently cannot access due to the failure with SSH. All that I'm missing? I have the configuration of settings of firewall for incoming connections and outgoing SSH port 22 is accepted on the Virtual Center Security Profile section. Thanks for any help you can provide.

check the/etc/ssh/sshd_config down... Of allowed root connect together to Yes?

  • Cannot use upgrade Update Manager to ESX 4.0 Update 1

We use vCenter 4.0. There are combinations of update4 ESX 3.5 and ESX ESX 4.0 host update1. I intend to upgrade to host ESX 3.5 update 4 ESX 4.0 update1.   I use ESX 4.0 update 1 DVD ISO Picture, when I try to create a baseline for the upgrade of the host, I get the following error.  It is said "impossible to import upgrade, upgrade version is not supported by this version fo Vmware VCenter update manager. I know that I can directly connect to ESX 3.5 and run the esxupdate or boot ESX 4.0 update DVD and perform the upgrade. I wonder why cann't Update Manager? We know the right answer?

    Just a guess.

As you try to download the update of ESX 1, I guess that your vCenter Server is already on the update 1.

If so you can update manager to update to version 4.0 Update 1 Patch 2.

  • ESX 3.5 Update 5 (Build 207095) Crash @ 30% with Update Manager

Hi everyone, we are currently trying to update our ESX running 207095 build (new generation).  As soon as we do the remediation.  It starts to install without problem until it hits the 30% Mark.  At this point the update managers hangs and fails after 30 minutes saying "Update Manager has timed out...". "At this point i will accept a reboot in vCenter, and once he's trying to start at what was assumed to be GRUB I get this error:"Error 15 file not found"at this stage, we rebuild the host.  And it happened again on the fresh build.

    Here are the versions:

    ESX 3.5 Update 5 (Build 207095)

2.5 U6 with Update Manager vCenter

    What we're doing wrong?

check this post with the same problem http://communities.vmware.com/thread/178800;jsessionid=A7FDAFF76607E4B0BB8E2CF17C437E62

  • ESX 4.0 Update 1 vs ESX 4.0 Update 1 has

I anticipate a 3.5 to 4 ESX ESX upgrade and notes that "ESX 4.0 Update 1" (814MB ISO, build 208167) and 'Package Upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESX Server 4.0 Server Update 1 a' (739MB zip).

Hmmm... I've never known VMware to publish '1a' versions of ESX and KB article below does not reference anything other that it is more build 208167 and continues to list a set of patches.

Why would be released "1a"?  Wouldn't more typical for U1, U2, U3, etc be released and then, for patches between them, simply use the Update Manager?

I just had to ask that we start picking up my documentation and installers in preparing for this project.  Thank you.

You are right, for the upgrade of the host you should definitely use the ISO 1 update.

Sorry if I confused you with my first answer.

What I meant by "You don't have to worry about update 1 and 1 a update when you update from version 3.5" was the 1a Update doesn't have any effect on this scenario (that's why VMware has not released a new DVD image for the 1a update). 1 to update just came out to correct an installation problem when updating to 4.0 - with the HP management agents installed - update 1. The binaries are the same, there was only the installation change, as described in the article.

  • VMWare Virtual Center 2.5 update 3 management ESX v3.5 Update 4 and 5 guests

I'm doing an audit of versions of VMWare and it seems that our cluster hosts are running a later update version as the virtual center server. Virtual Center 2.5 update 3 management ESX v3.5 Update 4 and 5 guests.

Does anyone know if this causes problems. This has been the case since before I started and there seems to be no negative effect I see.

Don't want to update virtual center update 5 as we plan to upgrade to vSphere, shortly.

you are in a supported configuration, so you should be fine

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/R40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.PDF

However, with more agents on new hosts, you can see some are disconnects/no response errors for your hosts in vCenter.  In general, I would like to have my instance of vCenter to or superior to the latest version of ESX.

Heres what my problem, they want to use Vcenter 4 and set up licenses for ESX 3.5 Update 4, how would I be able to configure Vcenter 4 to concede these ESX 3.5 servers, any help would be much appreciated
