Versions multiple ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1 update 1

Hi guys

my client has problems of update 3 versions of different ESX 4.0 to 4.1 update

so I thought I'd download zip and follow a manual update (esxupdate)

I just want to confirm with you guys because this article does not mention on specific build on 4.0

builds

ESX 4.0 164009 - VMware ESX 4.0 (May 21, 2009)
ESX 4.0 261974 - VMware ESX 4.0 Update 2 (June 10, 2010)
ESX 4.0 294855 - VMware ESX 4.0 Update 2 more updates

so is there any problem, update the versions above directly yo ESC 4.1 updated using these packages?

If I read that I can spend 4.0 any update 4.1 update 1

No Yes No problem. Just run 1) to ensure that things are OK before 2) who is the real thing. Maybe you want to go to ESXi as the next version would be communicated of ESXi only.

    Dear all,

    How to connect mulitple esx, I write a script to connect to multiple esx simultaneously and get vmhost detials.

    I tried it in my script.

    $esx = (get-Content "C:\Desktop\vmlist.txt") to connect-VIServer $esx

    How to connect with the credentials. Please guide me to solve this thread.

    Then you should be able to do

    $esx = get-Content "C:\Desktop\vmlist.txt".

    Connect-VIServer $esx - the username-password YourPassword YourUser

    To avoid having the password in clear text, you can also use the Credential parameter

    $esx = get-Content "C:\Desktop\vmlist.txt".

    SE connect-VIServer $esx - Credential $cred

  • Add several NFS data stores to multiple ESX hosts

    I am trying to write a script that will set up several NFS exports to multiple ESX hosts. Here is the script I use, it will add an NFS export to an esx host list.

    $esx = (get-Content servers.txt)

    {}
    $Host_Name = (Read-Host "enter the server (ex: storage-san)")
    $Path = (Read-Host "enter the path (ex: / ds_name/flight/flight)")
    $Name = (Read-Host "Enter the name of the data store")

    {foreach ($server in $esx)
    $Error.Clear)
    Get-VMHost $server | New-Nfs Datastore - NfsHost $Host_Name-path $Path - name $Name | Out-Null
    If ($error.count - gt 0) {$error | out-file ($server, 'c:\powershell scripts\logs\' + '.txt')}
    }

    $add_more = Read-Host "want to show you another data store?
    }
    While ($add_more - eq 'Yes' - or $add_more - eq "y")

    This script actually works OK but I can't just she kick sending and walk. If I have 10 stores of data to add, I have to wait for the current to the end, and then type the information for the second, etc..

    I was hoping just to type all the information from the beginning and the shot of the script to the wide and let him go. Here is what I added, you can see where I'm going with this?

    $esx = (get-Content servers.txt)

    $num_mounts = (Read-Host "Do you have multiple media")
    If ($num_mounts - eq 'Yes' - or $num_mounts - eq "y")
    {
    $mounts = @(Read-Host "supports différents combien avez_vous")

    #prompt me for all the different right monte upwards before and then executed by the actual task of Mount...
    }

    Any ideas?

    Try something like this

    $servers = @()
    $paths = @()
    $datastores = @()

    $answer = Read-Host "Enter another NFS mount ?" while($mount -eq "y"){
        $servers += Read-Host "Enter the NFS host"    $paths += Read-Host "Enter the path"    $datastores += Read-Host "Datastore name ?"    $answer = Read-Host "Enter another NFS mount ?"}

    $Error.Clear()

    Get-Content servers.txt | %{
        $esx = Get-VMHost -Name $_    $countNFS = $servers.Count
        if($countNFS -ne 0){
            0..($countNFS - 1) | %{
                New-Datastore -Nfs -NfsHost $servers[$_] -Path $paths[$_] -Name $datastores[$_] | Out-Null            if($Error.count -gt 0){
                    $Error | out-file ('c:\powershell scripts\logs\' + $server + '.txt')
                    $Error.Clear()
                }
            }
        }
    }

    The script reads all the data in the tables.

    Then it loops through all ESX hosts from the servers.txt file, and for each host, it will create all the NFS data storages.

  • Make a single LUN can be used by multiple ESX hosts

    Is it possible for a single LUN to be made usable by multiple ESX hosts at the same time?  For example, if you have an image or used by a vSphere environment requiring other vSphere environments in the data center access, you can put the image on a storage place where completely separate ESX hosts vSphere environments completely separate can see the same lun and clone the image or necessary?

    If the logic unit number is locked by accessed by an ESX host will be lock expires when the ESX host is not an another ESX host in another environment vSphere allowing access to the logical unit number, or is the lock, as it is usable by a single ESX host, until the storage is reconfigured to make it usable by a different host?

    Is there a better solution to this scenario?

    Thank you

    You can deploy both at the same time.  Locking occurs only for changes to metadata and only for the shooting of subsecond.  It is not required for the entire deployment process.

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

    We have a license GPFS and SAN storage. I am trying to create a storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts share existing virtual machines. We tried once NFS, it of a little slow and consume too much bandwidth LAN.

    Anyone can help answer? Thank you very much in advance!

    It depends on your storage space.

    You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).

  • ERROR: this version of esx requires a processor capable of 64-bit operation

    Kindly help to provide entries:

    I have a DELL Optiplex 760 that supports VT that is enabled.

    I tried to install directly ESX 4.0 and has been able to do successfully.

    However, I have tried to format and installed Windows 7 and then installed VM Workstation 7.

    When I tried to create a virtual machine (ESX), it gives me an error "this version of esx requires a 64-bit capable processor."

    Any advise?

    ESX 4 requires no VT she requires only a 64-bit processor.  Your physical processor is sufficient.  (Note, however, that you would be able to run the 32-bit clients.)

    Workstation 7 requires however VT virtualization features 64-bit processor.  Since you don't have VT, the virtual processor in Workstation 7 is a 32-bit processor.

  • Multiple ESX servers to access the same data store

    We connect our ESX servers to an Equallogic SAN iSCSI using VMWare iSCSI card.   I have a data store that has ISO files to store.   So far, I can connect only this data to an ESX Server store on time.  I have to disconnect an and connect manually to the other.  We currently have a facility relatively bare bones (don't have vCenter again, grouping, etc.).

    Is there anyway to connect the same data store to multiple ESX servers?  I tried to adjust the volume of Equallogic SAN for read only (since I just need to read ISO files), but I can't connect to ESX servers when I do this.

    Remember that the volume is enabled for clustering.

    From v4.x Equallogic firmware, there is an option advanced on each volume.

  • Y at - it an update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1?

    Dear friends;

    I heard that VMware releases update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1. Could you please tell me if this is correct?

    And would you please reference me this article?

    ESX will not available in vSphere 5.0. It will be always supported in the same way that VI 3.5 is still supported, however. Here's an official blog stating that ESX 4.1 is the latest major version of ESX.

    With the release of VMware vSphere 4.1, we announced that 4.1 will be the last version of vSphere to support the ESX and ESXi hypervisor architectures.

  • ESX 3.5 Update 5 versus question 4.1 VMotion ESX

    Good afternoon

    I hope it's a small question, I'll try to be concise.

    Basically I have an instance of Virtual Center 2.5 Enterprise (original version) with two ESX 3.5 knots (original also build... don't read any updated). DRS and HA are enabled.

    We started to exceed two knots (about 40 guests between them) and we recently ordered two new servers. Since it is several years since our first installation, we cannot buy the same materials. My understanding is that ESX 3.5 and earlier did not play really well when you introduced different hardware (servers) in a cluster. I've heard say that ESX 3.5 Update 5 (besides being current and taken in charge) remedies this problem. Is this true?

    Can I update my current environment ESX 3.5 update 5 and updated to Virtual Center 2.5 update 6 and then introduce some servers intel based more recent (but similar) in the cluster without any problems (ie. Invited VMotion between all ESX 4 nodes).

    Upgrade to 4.1 is more than I can swallow in the next few days, as they would result at the end of next week. I guess I can go down the licensing of two new ESX Server (ESX 4.1 licenses have been purchased for these new servers).

    Thank you

    TMR

    Am I right to assume that, in this perspective, ESX 3.5 U2 and ESX 4.1 will be will be the same in terms of CPU and EVC baselines (in other words, 4.1 has an advantage here).

    Yes, it's a safe assumption.  VCA Mode automatically applies the best option of compatibility possible for you, regardless of the version of ESX.  It is strictly for the CPU compatibility.

  • Cluster of downgrade of ESXi 4.1 for ESX 4.0 Update 2

    I have an ESXi 4.1 3-node cluster.  I would now like to come back on a cluster of ESX 4.0 U2.  I guess I can proceed in the same way that I set at level - free up to a single host. Installing ESX 4.0 on the free web host etc.  I know that U2 4.0 ESX and ESXi 4.1 can coexist in the same cluster as was the case when I first upgraded cluster.  Thus, everyone has done something like this before (downgrade a cluster)?  How should I handle virtual machines that are currently running 4.1 tools?  Thanks in advance.

    I've never had to downgrade a cluster but the methodology you listed sounds great.  We all know have mixed cluster will break so I don't see it being a problem to downgrade.   As much as your VM tools has always recommended to run your version of ESX so if long-term current tools your going to be on 4.0 can I remove 4.1 tools and return the 4.0 on.
