Raw disk
When do I have to consider creating a raw disk instead of the standard?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of RAW disk?
Hello
RDM requires remote storage as a SAN. If you use a Local Storage LUN then you must use a CRUDE device using the method shown in this Blog of TechTarget.

I'm working on a Compaq Presario C300.
Windows XP pro.
When I had, he had 2 SP installed, I managed to get 3 SP installed OK, but it does not accept windows updates... & is very slow, freezes from time to time... There is not a lot of data on it, I backed it up. At this point, I'm ready to wipe the machine & reinstall XP, when I try to do that, the hard drive is not seen, even though if I go into the BIOS & run check IDE drive he finished OK.
When I restart a message flashes upward, the beginning of a screen blue scndisk, saying: could not complete the process as type if RAW disk... Despite the fact that there is an operating system on it, how can it be possible?
When I look in computer management, disk management there are no drives listed, only the CD ROM
There is a partition to restore the system on this machine, but when I boot it I either get a message flash on the screen for a second or 2 on the machine in virtual memory that it just restarts.
Initially, I thought that the BIOS was the problem, but has managed to update the BIOS to version F24 OK.
I have the original OS disks, but when I run I get the message saying that the installation can not find any hard disk installed on the computer. Any help most welcome.

NTFS drive got converted to RAW disk
My NTFS driver converted to RAW and I can't access it, would you please help?
How I can access without lossing my data!
Hello Mohamed,
Thanks for posting your question on the Microsoft community.
Thank you for details on the issue.
The NTFS file system provides the best performance and security for data on hard disks and partitions or volumes that
the FAT file system used in some earlier versions of Windows.
Raw disk is used to designate a hard disk access to a raw, binary level, under data from partition level and using file system in the MBR.
I suggest you to refer to this article and check if it helps.
Reference:
Convert a hard disk or partition to NTFS format
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/convert-hard-disk-partition-NTFS-format#1TC=Windows-7Important notes:
After you convert a partition to the NTFS format, you cannot convert it back. If you want to reuse FAT filesystem on the partition, you will need to reformat the partition, which erases all data on it.Some earlier versions of Windows cannot read data on local NTFS partitions. If you need to use an earlier version of Windows to access a partition on the computer, do not convert it to NTFS.
Although the risk of corruption or loss of data during a conversion is minimal, you must back up all data on the partition before you begin.
I hope this information helps.
Please let us know if you need more help.

Hello everyone, just to confirm: RAW disk are supported by only if VDR mode virtual, right?
Also, is it possible to back up a single virtual disk, I.e. C only to a virtual windows machine?
Thanks in advance.
Hello
VDR uses snapshots to back up the virtual machine. Drives ROUGH that support snapshots in virtual mode, then you are on the first part.
It is possible to backup virtual disks with VDR. But don't mix no disks and partitions Windows here. It is possible to create a 100 GB virtual disk and create a 50 GB C: and 50 GB D: in this example, you could save only two partitions because you only have a virtual disk.
If you create a virtual disk for each partition, you can of course save it one by one.
Kind regards.

external USB disk as a raw disk
Hello
I was looking for the solution but could not find.
I have VMware server installed 1.0.6 on Windows XP.
Machine VM I created since the downturn of the performance, I thought using raw disk option (I hope that better read/write performance).
I want to format my external drive (WD My Book), using ext3 or xfs. Next, I would like to add as a 'raw disk' (not VMDK). I don't know why, but when I check the settings & gt; Material & gt; Hard drive there is no option to add PhisicalDrive which is the USB drive. VMware server can see only my hard drive (PhisicalDrive0) on the laptop, but nothing else. Is this normal? Can I add PhisicalDrive which is the external drive connected to the USB port? If Yes, please indicate how tcan I do.

USB devices can be "directly" connected to the virtual machine. FireWire devices are considered as a pci device and will not be seen by the virtual machine, like an ethernet card or a pcmcia wlan or other device pci card.

RAW disk mapping - virtual Conversion / physics?
Hi all
I have set up a machine virtual everything on time with a basic disk and also an extra disk I configured as a "Raw Disk Mapping. When I set up the new drive with the wizard in VC, he asked me if I wanted to set up the drive as a virtual disk or physical disk. The Assistant said that if I set it up as a virtual drive, it might be included in the snapshots etc...
At this point I have it configured with physical access.
What I want to do now is to convert the disk to a virtual disk, so I wonder if there is a way to do it?
Best regards, Nick.
Stop the virtual machine and delete the ROW. Then add the ROW to the VM in virtual compatibility mode and start your virtual machine. You should be good.

We can recover the file raw disk VMDK file?
Somehow, we find that the VMDK (VM5.vmdk) file for a virtual computer is lost. However, the raw disk VM5 - flat hard file always exist.
We wonder if it is possible for us to create the file VM5.vmdk of the raw disk file?
Thank you
Yes... That's what I would do... He would also create a backup of your flat file in case things don't work and it never hurts to have a backup to moments like this.

View the raw disks connected in Solaris
Operating system: Solaris 5.9
DB version: 10 G Release 2
In one of our machines, we had an Oracle Instance where the data files have been stored in ASM disks. Something was wrong with the ASM Instance and the instance of all crashed. Now we want a fresh installation of Oracle 10 g ASM 2. But I am not able to see these discs when I have $ df - h. I understand the fact that ASM works on Raw hard - and that the UNIX OS would not be able to see these discs. But is it possible that I could view these discs? Currently, this is the info of the disk space I get:
How can I display the raw disks connected to this computer?$ df -h Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s0 4.8G 2.0G 2.7G 43% / /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s4 4.8G 1.4G 3.4G 29% /usr /proc 0K 0K 0K 0% /proc mnttab 0K 0K 0K 0% /etc/mnttab fd 0K 0K 0K 0% /dev/fd /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s5 4.8G 4.6G 129M 98% /var swap 12G 64K 12G 1% /var/run swap 12G 152K 12G 1% /tmp /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s3 4.8G 292M 4.5G 6% /opt /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s6 30G 16G 14G 54% /u01 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s7 9.6G 7.3M 9.5G 1% /export/home
DF reported that on mounted file systems, try "format". which lists all partitions and disks/volumes available.

Remove diskgroup raw disk?
Hi all.
I installed of ASM (10.2.0.3) with attached databases.
For the DATA diskgroup, I have 16 9 GB of raw disk files. There are more than 60 GB of free disk. I would like to give back it to the AIX admin guy. ASM used about 6G 9 g on each disc. How to make it so that there is nothing on the disk I want to remove from the diskgroup or I can just remove that via OEM and reorganize it?

Memory card appears as raw disk, impossible to format and does not open
my 32 GB lexar memory card does not open & showing the memory of 32 MB raw drive how can I change rw in fat32 format & recover my data
Hello Anil,
Thanks for posting your question on the Microsoft community.
I would like to know some information about the problem so that we can help you better.
What is the brand and model of your computer?
Thank you for details on the issue.
This problem may occur because of corrupted memory card or driver settings.
I would suggest trying the following methods and check if it helps.
Method 1:
Run the hardware and devices Troubleshooter and check.
Reference:
Open the hardware and devices Troubleshooter
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/open-the-hardware-and-devices-TroubleshooterIf this does not help, use method 2.
Method 2:
Please use the suggestions in this article and check the issue.
Reference:
http://support.HP.com/us-en/document/c01884924Note: The conversion of a hard disk partition or volume from NTFS to FAT32 requires that you reformat the partition, which deletes all the data on this subject. Be sure to back up data that you want to keep before you begin.
I hope this information helps.
Please let us know if you need more help.
Thank you

Hello
I am trying to use a drive eSata for my virtual machines.
I have a 500 GB disk, which I have separated in 5 were leaving with 100 GB each.
I did my first virtual machine (WinXP) to test. During the creation of the machine, I choose to install on a raw partition (physical disk).
This was made at home. But when I came to work and moored at my machine, where I have other USB drives, I can't start my VM. It is saying that my partion charged.
I then try to remove and configure again. I have remove the Hd and Add again, including the new name for the device. But Windows does not start. I have validated that the partition contains the necessary data, it seems good. But I can't wmware workstation 7 to boot from it again.
It is posible to reconnection is not a virtual machine on a physical disk?
Any suggestions?
/Brian Haahr-Nielsen
Brian - setting often offline: disk is not enough.
In case you still get an error message like '' operation on file. ''
. \harddisk... has no"you must use a special tool.See this post
http://communities.VMware.com/thread/283469?TSTART=0
the root of your problem is that the vmdk-descriptor file has a reference to the number of physical disk - and this change when you plugin USB drive on another host.
# Disk DescriptorFile version=1 CID=54bcc741 parentCID=ffffffff createType="fullDevice" # Extent description RW 156296385 FLAT "\\.\PhysicalDrive0" 0 # The Disk Data Base #DDB ddb.virtualHWVersion = "6" ddb.geometry.cylinders = "9729" ddb.geometry.heads = "255" ddb.geometry.sectors = "63" ddb.geometry.biosCylinders = "9729" ddb.geometry.biosHeads = "255" ddb.geometry.biosSectors = "63" ddb.adapterType = "lsilogic" ddb.toolsVersion = "0"
See the line
RW 156296385 FLAT"
. \PhysicalDrive3' 0If you manually change this numero_disque, there is no need to recreate the vmdk description.
In any case - using rawdisks in Windows 7 is a pain - hopefully that VMware will fix this ASAP.
I heard they are busy with her...

Platform: RHEL 4.7 32-bit
Database: 11.2.0.1
Architecture: 2 node RAC
Storage: ASM
users:
Oracle (with Group dba, oinstall)
oragrid (with Group dba, oinstall)
Successfully installed the Clusterware and software of the CARS on both nodes.
Raw devices selected for ASM disk groups are as follows:
/ dev/raw/raw {1.11}
The problem is that the owner of raw devices have been defined as 'oragrid.oinstall', but at each reboot it comes back as 'root.disk '.
Note: I set up CARS without installing the DSO library.Add them in the "/ etc/rc.local ' file.
example: -.
chown oracle: oinstall/dev/raw/raw1
chown oracle: oinstall/dev/raw/raw2
chown oracle: oinstall/dev/raw/raw3
chown oracle: oinstall/dev/raw/raw4
chown oracle: oinstall/dev/raw/raw5

chmod 600/dev/raw/raw2
chmod 600/dev/raw/raw3
chmod 600/dev/raw/raw4

Hello
I'm trying to install my second OS (ubuntu 12.04 LTS x 64), installed on the dual boot with grub on another partition of my Win 7 Pro x 64 boot disk.
Linux partition are not mapped in the windows and the installation is as follows:
1-0 (HPSF/NTFS) partition: 100 MB win 7 partition
2. 1 (HPSF/NTFS) partition: c: boot Win 7 pro x 64 (133,24 GB) partition
3 2 (Linux) partition: / partition Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x 64 (37,25 GB)
4. 3 (Linux swap) partition: SWAP of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x 64 (3.72 Gb)
5. 4 (Linux) partition: / home partition Ubuntu 12.04 x 64 (105,14 GB)
This drive in SATA connected drive (WDC WD3000HLFS - 01G6U1 ATA Device, (Channel 0, Target 1, Lun 0)).
When you configure the virtual machine, I set the Partition 2 to be used with this machine.
I checked the folloing points:
- Intel processor supports x 64 (i5 750 @ 2.67 GHz, 4 cores)
- VT turned on in the BIOS
When you run the virtualized Ubuntu I am getting following error message:
I've attached the vmware.log file.
What I am doing wrong?
Can someone help me get my virtualized Ubuntu?
Please foregive me my English because it is not my native language, I'm French.
Thanks in advance for your help and advice,
Concerning
Stéphane
PS: If you need more information let me know (please tel me also how to obtain the necessary information)
strange that then 0 is not present?
> Really bad news
Yep - but not really news - older versions of the workstation all have this problem with Windows 7 guests - which is why I still use 2003
I would setup just the Ubuntu VM in a regular vmdk ANDS store it on any of your other 3 discs -
As fast as the raw disks, but can develop and is simpler than LVM?
To avoid fragmentation and increase fixed virtual readers of performance are recommended. These cannot grow if you have first to them as a great space and waste in the host drive.
Or use LVM in the comments and add a flat disc of 2 GB at a time, say. Who is merged into a pool of space of storage where the guest linux stores its logical volumes, or something like that.
But LVM seems complicated, is there an easier way (and I hope than automatic) to develop virtual drives without losing any show?

I have no problem, expand a flat disc, so I'm not sure where you get this info from!
But LVM seems complicated, is there an easier way (and I hope than automatic) to develop virtual drives without losing any show?
Of course, it is easier to treat if not use LVM, then it is straightforward. Although I would never extend a drive without first having a good backup of it!

We have a Cluster of MS using RDMs in a host cluster ESXi 4.1 5. The RDM physical Mode, on a guest on hostA, the storage is presented to the host b, hostC, pass, hostA, hostE.
It has always been my understanding (and I saw with other RDMs in the past) when a ROW gets used by a hostA of comments, it will be posted is no longer in the pool of strage avalible under the window "Add Storage" on the host b.-e... I would still be able to see as RDM LUN if I went to a guest and added another hard drive, but the host would no longer display it as storage avalible.
It is confirmed in the following article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1016222
In my scenario, I can still see the storage that has been given to a guest on HostA as a RDM on hostsB-E in the add storage window. (this cause some problems when let storage recover 'unused' LUNS and storage that has been considered as non-allocated was actually released several guests as RDM.)
The article suggests that this occurs when the storage is not presented consistently on all hosts in a cluster. We use EMC FC storage, and my storage administrators swear that LUNS are the same for all hosts in my cluster.
I search in the KB articles information and empty to come... I'll open a case with VMware, but was wondering if someone else has experienced problems similar, and that has been done on your side to solve (and hopefully help someone to avoid any similar problems)
In addition, there is an easy way to compare points of view "Add Storage" of all hosts in a cluster to verify that they see the same unallocated storage?
No, if the number of LUNs and the naa numbers game (don't forget the 16 and the last 8 digits of number of naa are still the same according to the table), you can have row filtering disabled Please check
The values below the default values are true
- In the vSphere Client, select Administration > vCenter Server settings > Advanced settings.
