• RDM and Oracle Cluster

  I have a client who wants to create two new Virtual Machine with RedHat Enterprise Linux and Oracle 10 x (I don't know).

  He wants to create an active/passive cluster between the two VirtualMachine Oracle, but want to use a disc RDM (due to performance of I/o expansion).

  Please avoid discussing the increase assumed of I/O, I have done some tests and I don't think that there is a difference so to justify a RDM... but so now!

  If I remember correctly it is not possible to attach the same ROW (both in physical or virtual) to more than one computer at the same time virtual, so how can I create an active/passive cluster and use a RDM?

  If I change the preferences of the VM I can add a DRIVE or a SCSI DEVICE, but not a SCSI controller.

  The trick is very simple: use a new SCSI ID (for your disc RDM) as 1, X

  This will create a new controller.

  WARNING: adding a new controller can change nNIC enumeration, so remember that you network settings remain the same.

  I just looked to the top of the page "Event Viewer" and discovered 1 791 itemsmarked as 'endangered', 'Critical', 'Error', etc, etc, etc.!

  How can I fix all of these issues, please?

• Very bad audio and video performance

  I have a Pavilion dm1 laptop running Windows 7.  When I got all first the machine audio and video performance was very good.  However, towards the end of last year the performance for audio and video has become extremely slow.  Still, the sound stutters even without video.

  I used the tools to clean the registry, updated (or verified) all drivers I can think, but nothing has not improved.

  Maybe related, but less to worry about because it is necessary that in rare occasions, boot has become very slow too.

  I think I have tracked down a part of the problem by chance.

  Normally, I start my DM1 when connected to various devices of office as keyboards etc.  These are all plugged into the USB ports.  As the boot begins there very long delays in the process.  And when the boot ends stuttering audio and video as described.  However, if no USB device is attached during the boot process, start happening quickly and the audio/video all work fine.

  This will not affect performance, but it can change the default value of Photoshop CS3.

  In bridge for file associations, you can check if the extensions such as JPEG, PSD etc files have Photoshop selected CC.

  Also check the program by default for images if you directly open images with Photoshop.

  Hey guys. Quick question about the RDM and NTFS permissions. I have a server of physical file with a 1 TB lun presented to her. I need to convert this machine to a virtual machine. I know I can set the lun existing to the virtual machine as RDM (virtual) and retain the benefits that ESX provides, that is to say, vMotion. I tested and it works fine. However, I have 2 questions about this configuration:

  1. Actions/NTFS permissions will be still intact after I have present the lun ROW for the operating system called? Man, I sure hope that if. This test was not so easy. Anyone can check it by experience?

  2. Any way to hide the lun ROW of the Wizard "add storage? When present you a lun to a host ESX group and use as RDM, it still shows upwards in the wizard when I try to add storage. Now, I know that I can keep track of the ID lun that prevent me from potentially selecting and formatting as VMFS... but my co-workers my not be aware.   If logic unit number is defined as a ROW, add storage won't be able to use it, or even see. It does not to my RDM.

  vCenter and VCB share some components, so it is not recommended.  If you have only one physical machine, I would be set up with VCB and using VC in a virtual machine.  You can run VCB in a virtual machine as well, but then you don't get the san connectivity you get when VCB is physical.  Only method NBD (copy of disk based network) works with vcb in a virtual machine.

  If you want to create Materialized View Log, is usually because you were planning to implement FAST REFRESH mode for materialized views.

  As sb92075 says there is no free lunch.

  But, you should compare the cost of some insert/delete on the materialized view log , and the cost of a COMPLETE REFRESH from your point of view, materialized.

  If the Base Table must periodically be recharged with millions of rows and then, FAST REFRESH and Materialized View Log mode is not the right solution.

• Restore virtual machines with Netbackup and VCB

  I just Netbackup 6.5.2 and using VCB 1.5.  When I create my backups, it makes the .img files.  When I try to restore using Netbackup, it won't recognize backups from windows NT and not Flash.  And VM converter does not recognize the .img files.  So, how can I restore, what am I am I doing wrong?

  Hello.  The NetBackup .img files are not accessible directly.  They are used internally by NetBackup.

  When the only restore files vmdk (virtual machine complete), NetBackup 6.5.2 supports two types of restorations.  First of all, you can automatically perform a restore of the entire virtual machine by using the free VMware Converter component.  The second method involves all first restore VMware vmdk and then manually by your restoration.
