Re-attach the LUN

I'm migrating LUNS from Site A to Site B.  Site B have ESXi 4.1 running.  My question is how can I joined those LUNS to my hosts of the Site B ESXi 4.1 that I migrated just above the Site A?

You must present the storage in the same way you did for your guests in A Site.  You may need to restart if this is a new presentation of the LUNS to hosts.

  • How to clean and do a fresh install with attached iscsi LUN?

I intend to migrate both esx 4.1 with esxi5.1 hosts before you wipe and do a clean install.  Each host is connected to two iscis without, with 4 LUNS of each SAN attached to each host.  Each lun
spread over 3 degrees is. I plan on vmotion (not storage vmotion) guests from one host to another to make the upgrade.  I'm stuck on the determination of what will happen to the iSCSI LUNS after I
upgrade to esxi5.1 guests.  It seems that I should just be able to reattach, but I'm not sure.  Can I just attach the LUNS to the new installation 5.1 hosts and see all the
VMDK intact, or is there something that I am on?

And should the migrated to another host virtual machine continues to run on the iscsi san, while I upgrade of the host, they were released since then?  It seems that storage must be removed from the process as the LUNS
should not remain attached to the host after it is cleared and the iqn name no longer exists.

Am that I on the right track here?  What Miss me?

jackjack2, understand you this? I went ahead and moved to esxi 5.0 U2 of ESX 3.5 u5. Had to perform clean install and I have an iSCSI SAN. That's what I did:

1 a taken a screenshot from all my ESX host configurations. Go to configuration-> software adapter-> click on the iSCSI--> properties--> iqn copy map and alias-> click the dynamic discovery tab and note any IP address. You may need these IPs with the discovery of data warehouses later.

    2. after having documented the configs, put the host in maintenance mode.

    3. after maintenance, remove the host from the vcenter server. Connect directly to the host and close.

    4. remove all the network cables. Cable marking help before you detach the cables.

    5. clean install esxi 5.0.

    6. after installation, before rebooting, set the network cables.

    7. configure and test the management network. If your network management test fails, see if you have anything that is entered in the id vlan. Chances are that your port is not shared resources in the physical switch. In this case, remove the id vlan (during the configuration management network) work.

8 bring the vcenter server host.

9 configure the network, dns, time, etc.

10 Add a software iSCSI adapter. This card will have a new iqn. Either you provide this iqn to your SAN administrator so that it can update side SAN, or you can use the old iqn name.

    11. in my case, I made a copy of the new iqn and then deleted. Entered the old iqn name obtained in step 1. Additionally, entered the alias (since one was present before). After that, a new analysis and update still does not fill in data warehouses. So, I went to the properties of the iSCSI adapter and then discovered added tab dynamic addresses IP that did not exist before (otherwise, you will need to enter the virtual IP address of the cluster that you data store (s) belong to). Once the IP addresses have been added to the dynamic discovery tab, he asked if I wanted to rescan the HBAs. I said yes and viola! my data stores have been populated.

12 Add the host to the cluster.

Note that you can add iSCSI adapter when you affiliate you the host to the cluster. However, in this case HA will not be happy because no heartbeat of data storages will be detected. In addition, when data warehouses are discovered it may appear initially as not mounted. Don't panic. After a minute or two it will be mounted.

    I hope this helps!

  • Confusion on the LUN numbering

    Hello

I have a question about the numbering of the logic unit number, we have fiber hosts attached to an EMC VNX 5500

I'm looking at our facility existing and just get a sense that I need to create some new LUN shortly and I am new to fiber.

EMC VNX we have a unit number logic that gave the LUN ID of 200, but when I match the UUID to the LUN on the host within the fiber on an ESX host card, it shows the same LUN ID 43 logic unit number, I guess it's OK as its is in place for a long time and work.

    My question is

Why the LUN ID does not match the ID on the storage array

I know that there is a limit of LUN ID 255 in VMware, if I was available a unit logic on the side number VNX and give it a number greater than 255, which would be OK if VMware will give a lower ID LUN in any case.

    Thank you very much

    Nick

A LUN on a storage VNX system production has two LUN - ID, a unit number ID logic internal as a host LUN ID. The host LUN ID is the one that you can set when you present the LUN to a host, i.e. Add the LUN to a storage group.

A good tip. I often deal with a large number of LUNS the same size and to identify them without having to check IDs, I usually take a slightly different size (for example, 1 GB). I do the same thing for virtual disks, if a virtual machine has several discs.

  • Canonical names of the LUNS that are available

Hello, maybe it is simple: How can I get it back, with powercli, information on the available LUNS that can be added on an esx (glance in the attachment to understand what I mean)?

Basically, I need to get a list of canonical of all LUN names that can be added. I don't have the canonical names of the LUNs already created as data stores.

Thx a lot and sorry for the bad English

To find the Canonicalname free LUNS on an ESXi server, you can do

    $esx = Get-VMHost MyEsx* $storMgr = Get-View $esx.ExtensionData.ConfigManager.DatastoreSystem
    $storMgr.QueryAvailableDisksForVmfs($null) | Select -ExpandProperty CanonicalName

  • Delete the ROW (but not the LUN) mapping file

I am looking for a test of consistency here.

I want to delete a ROW of a data store map file but does not affect the LUN.  The original question was that the virtual machine has a physical RDM mapped mode that would fail to vmotion.  vCenter reported that the ROW was not available on the other hosts; We checked that the LUN has been.  I ended up remove the ROW of the vm, quick vMotioning of the virtual machine and add the row as a new disk (virtual mode this time), actually create a new mapping file.  Now, all the works of the feature and the machine can vmotion around the cluster.

It is now a week now, and all is well.  I would like to go back and remove the original (defective) rdm mapping file.  I've never done this, so I would like someone to check that there is no effect on the LUN it is / was mapped to.

Furthermore, it's all about vSphere 4.1.  Problem was discovered to plug the hypervisors to ESXi 4.1 800380.  The virtual machine with the issue has been glued on an ESXi 4.1 host 433742.  It was the latest patch.  Machine virtual don't vmotion to other hosts until they were patches, while she probably had nothing to do with patch levels.

    Thank you

    Craig

    Hello

You cannot delete the ROW from the data store where the virtual machine is running, because it is attached to the virtual machine.

If you are talking about the old file RDM, which was under the old data store where previously the VM was lying and there is nothing to do with your existing VM that's running, you can remove the same. But if the same RDM file points to the current running VM, then you cannot delete the same.

Initially, I found the script stumbled upon the $luns [0] which means the value is null or empty. I replaced vml with naa. Now, I got "one or several mandetory missing settings SCSI LUN". An error with the syntax, but I'm not able to establish that, I guess.

Now, if I run certain commands on the command line I find I'm out usable. But by channeling the same row in a table or the variable, then the Write-Host of the content, I see "VMware.VIMAutomation.ViCore.Impl.V1" (and so on).

Judging by the dates of the blog posts that I am of the opinion the latest PowerCLI (v4 build 264274) can return the information in a different way, I'm wrong with my assumption?

Can you guess what will be my next question? How could I do that now?

Any help is appreciated and rewarded (in points not beer).

    Thank you

    Darren.

The "vml", "naa"... depends on the type of storage are your LUNs.

The problem with this statement is that you must specify the parameter - Scsilun.

This can be a positional parameter (without - Scsilun), but then it has to come in position 2.

    See the page Get-ScsiLunPath .

    Try the attached script.

I changed this line and it works for me.

  • A copy of the Lun in ESX 3.5

    Hi all

Be friendly with me so here is my first message/question

In my business, we would like to increase the size of the LUN as we are in a lack of space. We decided to do a copy-Lun to keep all the VM and reattached the lun/storage at the existing ESX (we did not want to manually copy all VM the former LUN to the new...)

Admin doing storage copy (a test lun with 1-2 test VM on it...) then allowed us on our ESX, the function of "enablesignature". Rescan us the storage card (the new lun appeared...) then we have put back the storage on our ESX Server... BUT recreate the storage has asked us to "reformat" the vmfs partition (and we "lost" all VM inside...)  : 0.

My question (and I know for sure someone already dealt with that...)...:

How can we attach a copy of the old one (with VM already on it) to our ESX Server without losing all the data on it? I know that we could create an empty storage and move all the VMS from the old to the new... But because of my business processes, we have only one night to do and not enough time to move all THE VMS 'manually '...

I forgot something? I did something wrong? After several attempts, same results: we've lost any datasbecause ESX that we were asked to formatt the new attached storage...

Thanks in advance and waiting for your genius...

    Ford

If the logic unit number are the same (because of a copy of low-level storage) your duty as a clone/snapshot (cause disk UUID is identical).

You must use the DisallowSnapshotLUN = 0 option.

  • How to attach the TC to an existing wi - fi network?

Is it possible to attach the TC to an existing wi - fi network? In other words, I have a WiFi network with a router (but of course) and everything works perfectly. I want to just connect Time Capsule to the network and use it for backup. How do I do that? There is no option in the time Capsule "to connect to this access point and is the password". So I consider that it is impossible? Connect a cable ethernet for Mac for backup is not an option that I have several devices, all sharing the same Capsule. Andy help would be appreciated. Thank you.

OK, I did a hard reset on the Time Capsule by unplugging the power cord, press reset with a pen button and reconnect the power cord and wait 5 seconds until what the orange light flashing. When I used the AirPort to start utility to configure the time Capsule, it gave me an option "Add to an existing network", which I did, and that did the trick. The Capsule is a member of the existing wi - fi network and my MacBook can be seen as a backup device.

  • PowerCLI reports wrong of the LUN size when perennial reservations are met * and * size of the LUN is changed.

My question is: is this expected behavior?

In short, the situation is this: we have a cluster running ESXi 5.5.0 build 1746018. Two guests Windows Server R2 2012 are running a SQL Server Cluster (MSCS), making use of RDM with a physical SCSI emulation. Which requires LUNS of perennial reservations activated. All is well until the customer decides to expand two of the LUNS. PowerCLI continues to account for the original size of those LUNs, which breaks our reports.

Logically, it makes sense, but it still seems a bit of an ejection. Has anyone seen elsewhere this behavior and you have found ways around it?

    See you soon!

You didn't say how to retrieve the size of the LUN.
