  My father has just phoned me the same problem in Firefox on his computer of Windows XP. It turns out that it was as an add-on Firefox called "XUL Cache. Disabling this add-on appeared to solve the problem.

  I don't know how he got here or if this is a permanent solution, but it it upward and running for now.
