Renamed .exe incorrectly and now nothing is open!

Hello

I have windows xp and was being removed from xp antivirus 2012 virus according to the following instructions (http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2011/06/remove-xp-antispyware-2012-xp-internet.html). I managed to stop pop ups of this virus, and then proceeded to try to remove the virus altogether and I badly renamed the evil .exe file in my C:\Documents and Settings\ [UserName] Settings\Application Data\ file.

Now, my internet, "add or remove programs" etc files and functions are not open! I get the pop up 'open with' and it equipped with internet explore etc than the recommended program with that I should open. However, when I select the internet Explorer, I wonder to download iexplore.exe app. I run, but nothing happens except the 'open with' pop up comes back to the top.  I checked in my search folders, and it seems that I already file iexplore.
The .exe file in the application data folder is actually an icon/image of a computer and description (under properties) tells internet development tools explore and the file type is application.  Huge problem is that I don't even remember what we called the .exe file until I renamed it! Once I changed the name, everything went wrong.
Can someone please help me either rename this .exe in its default name, or provide a way to restore the settings of this app? Because I can't access the internet, I can't run the Doug knox restore zip file or copy all the text in Notepad without the risk of hurt.
Help, please!
Thank you.

Hi Julie

Your issue is not with the file that you renamed. Your question is malicious software that changed your file association for executable files. In fact, it seems that your computer may still be infected.

Right-click on Internet Explorer and select run as administrator. You should be able to access the internet in this way. If you still cannot access the internet after you choose to run IE as Admin, then you will need download these files using another computer, then transfer the files on the infected using a usb flash drive or cd drive computer.

Download XpFixExe.reg from HERE. Right-click on it and choose "merge". Confirm the prompt. You should now be able to open executable files. Then, download MS Fixit and run it to reset your internet proxy settings. Once you have run these files download Malwarebytes. Be sure to update the scanner once it has been installed and perform a quick scan with it. Remove any detected object.
