Replace HDD SSD Touchsmart HP Envy 15-j151nr advice needed

I will replace the 1 TB HARD disk provided with this computer using Samsung 840 256 GB HARD drive. I looked through these forums and elsewhere and am still confused with the best procedure to make sure a bootable stick with installed Windows 8.1.

I have a scanner I'll make a copy of the recovery by using the PC software disc is supplied by HP. I also ordered disk backup of OEM windows 8.1 for the installation of the operating system if necessary.

The SSD will have the USB adapter to prepare with the latest firmware updates and if necessary formatting before installation.

I got the product key MS using 3rd party software from the bios if necessary

My question is for the installation of the new SSD more is it recommended to use the HP recovery disk I have done and start on the optical drive for installation as described in the manual of HP or use Microsoft's OEM disk I will receive? I understand there are a 4 partitions on the original disc with one of them the key to unlock the product key installed in the bios. I'm willing to use a 3rd party software to copy files and partitions, but prefers not to do so.

Any input on this is appreciated

Jeff

The HP recovery disk will not work. Only, it can be used on a disk that is at least as large as the original, which is causing many problems for people who want to install the SSD drives. The OEM disc works perfectly. If the laptop comes with Windows 8.1 then the key Code is actually printed in the BIOS and the installation disk will automatically find it. If the laptop comes with Windows 8 and you ugraded to 8.1 at any given time, it's actually a little more complex. In this case the only simple thing to do is to get a drive OEM Windows 8. The key in the BIOS Code is only for the original operating system. Yes, assuming you have the right OEM disk just boot from it and follow the prompts to install Windows 8 or 8.1. You will be pleasantly surprised, how fast it goes with an SSD. The original drive will have all drivers and apps installed at the factory, and programs in C:\swsetup folder so it is a good idea to have a way to get out of the original 1 TB drive, and you can install them on the new drive once the operating system is loaded.

    Hello!

So, I am trying to replace the magnetic hard disk of my envy 17 1 to with a form factor of the Samsung 850 Evo Sata 500 GB SSD. I followed the guide maintenance and replacement to http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762 , but when it came time actually extract the hard drive of my computer, I couldn't know how. I took some pictures of what it looks like inside my computer, and here they are: https://goo.gl/photos/RLmPNcYfzq5Lf5Ah6 . As you can see, there is a blue rubbery case around my hard drive, but taking part and other top does not move the hard drive, and I didn't use the maximum force in the case where the Bay broke. The manual says to unplug the cable from the hard drive, but I can't unplug it for lack of space. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Replace HDD SSD Lenovo Y500 Guide?

Hello everyone I'm going to keep it is as simple as possible. I would trade my HDD in my Lenovo Y500 with a 1 TB SSD. My Y500 has the 16 GB of cache if that helps. I think it's a 2.5 "HDD but what kind. What is an mSata or Sata?

The physical installation, I can do easily, but what is the best way to backup and transfer things to the SSD?

I'm pretty decent with computers and I have some knowledge on this operation. I would like to transfer all my SSD HARD drive this includes the OS(windows 8) and all the other necessary components. I would do it with a DVDR that is 4.6 GB I think. It's a brand new computer, so I have no files, docs etc that I have to worry.

Please can someone answer my questions I would really appreciate the help of the community.

Please post a guide step by step for me and others to use!

    Thanks a ton

I found it easier to use an mSATA replacing the 16 GB one with a 256 GB SSD version. It runs at 6 Gbps.

Windows 8, I have installed from a copy retail DVD instead of imaging on the 1 TB drive. The activation key for Windows 8 is built in your bios. Windows automatically detected 8 mine installed without asking for it and active without problem.

The hard drive is accessible to the customer on your model. The upgrade or replacement of the disc will not void the warranty. You also have access to an mSATA/WSSD slot in car. Here is the Service Manual:

  • Thickness of Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 HDD; Replacement of SSD

    Hey guys,.

    I own a Z500 IdeaPad with a ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB 500 GB HDD by Samsung.

I would like to do an upgrade with a 1 TB of HDD, I would put in the HARD Drive Caddy (replacement CD/DVD drive).

And I also intend to get an EVO 840 Samsung SSD, I place in the main HARD disk location.

BUT the HARD drive I have now is 9, 5mm thick. And the EVO 840 is 7 mm thick. I have problems in the main HARD disk location?

And are there opportunities that I can fit a 12, 5mm disk in the location of main HARD drive or the HARD drive caddy?

I'm terribly sorry for my English is not my mother tongue.

    Thanks in advance.

medo994 wrote:... HARD drive, I have at the moment is 9, 5mm thick. And the EVO 840 is 7 mm thick. I have problems in the main HARD disk location?

Answer: Page 71 of the Hardware maintenance manual provides 9.5 mm hdd/sdd can be used. If you have the Player 7.0 mm it can also be accommodated.

medo994 wrote:... And are there opportunities that I can fit a 12, 5mm disk in the location of main HARD drive or the HARD drive caddy?

Answer: For the housing of the primary hard drive, the cage hdd/ssd mounting is designed to 9.5 mm, so a 7.0 mm or 9.5 mm hdd/ssd will fit. However, a 12.5 mm will not match. The caddy, you see the caddy if it can accommodate a hard drive of 12.5 mm. You may need to check the side of the caddy against the STRANGE to see if it will fit in the odd-NUMBERED slot.

  • HP Envy 14 A9P67UA spectrum #ABA: Add (or replace) mSATA SSD to the HP Envy 14 spectrum w/windows 10... possible? Worth the risk?

    Hi all!

So, I read in this forum on this subject and have seen mixed results.  I bought this computer a few years ago, generally pretty happy with it but I ran out of space and the battery is dying.  I am trying to decide whether to revise it or buy new.   That's what I want to do:

Add 2nd mSATA SSD in the second slot.  I saw a post like this HD is compatible but that's a post.  Around, I've read that others have had problems by adding a second SSD.  Some people can not access, some people, it shows only a 128 GB extra, in fact, some have a BSOD.   The post I saw replaced the original disc to help one of them and adding a second drive so the two HDs were of the same brand.  Is it a better idea?  Also, all the posts I've seen on this topic were two years old and dealt with Windows 7.  Windows 10 it will make it harder to do?

    http://www.Amazon.com/Samsung-850-mSATA-2-inch-MZ-M5E1T0BW/DP/B00TGIVRYU?ie=UTF8&PSC=1&redirect=true...

If not I can try and use the same car with the model came in the second slot to help in possible compatibility issues, but I would be limited to a 128 GB extra (or possibly 256?).

I have also upgraded the memory of 8 GB and add a new battery.

Reflections on what is successful? I wouldn't waste money on these parts if this is going to work.  Thank you!

    Hi @cdmdds,

    Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand from your posts that you are having a problem with your Notebook SPECTRUM HP ENVY 14 - 3010NR and needing some updates. This system supports 8 GB (8192 × 1) of the maximum of memory RAM and 256 GB (128 GB × 2) Page 34 of the repair. The battery information on page 32.

This would be due to the limit with the processor.

Please let me know if this information helps you solve the problem by marking this post as accept as Solution, this will help others easily find the information they seek.

  • Satellite U940-100 - replace the HDD SSD

    Hello

I want to change my Sat U940-100 by a SSD HARD drive.
I can make a perfect copy but when I change the HDD SSD won't.
Can someone explain me what I have to do?

I think it has to do with het SSD of 32 GB, which is already inside?
What I have to change something in the BIOS?

    Thanks in advance

    Dag

What do you mean it won't? What did you do exactly?

In my opinion after Exchange of HDD with SSD, you must install the original recovery image and start using your laptop with the 'settings '.

  • Laptop HP ENVY 15 t-k000 CTO: add additional SSD for HP ENVY 15 t-k000 CTO Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

    Hello.

I have my laptop new HP ENVY 15 t-k000 CTO Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) yesterday itself. He already have writer BRD. Can I replace my BRD burner with extra HD SSD? If yes what is the procedure for that?

You can, but you shouldn't. The port for the optical drive is a SATA-I have the interface. Slower than the port for HDD/SSD. So if you want to just add storage put a regular mechanical training in an optical drive adapter. Also any drive in the optical drive adapter will not be bootable. This will help you:

  • Portege R700 - DVD replace HDD/SDD

    Hi all

I do not use my dvd player at all and I would like to replace it with a hdd/ssd.
    Any way to do it?

    Thank you
    Christian

    Hello

I checked specification for this Portege and can't find any info on this type of upgrade.

In the past, that Toshiba has offered several models of different laptops with adapter separated from SelectableBay HDD and instead of ODD, it was possible to put the second HARD drive. Unfortunately I think that it is not available for this Portege.

Have you tried to find some information about it?

  • Satellite L655D-011-HDD/SSD Alert, HARD drive failure?

I have an old L655D-011 of 6 months and yesterday it started to appear with the message to back up my files because there is a problem with my HARD drive. Well, after having a technical support in the past, I don't give that easily and simply run my laptop to the nearest authorized service center. Instead, I help out.

I did the BIOS update finally. No change in question.
Finally had time to create a recovery media. No problem with that at all.
I reformatted. No change in question.
Checked the health monitor. It shows that my HARD drive is "good". Yet, when I double-click the icon, I get a pop - up with the following message:

    "Toshiba HDD/SSD Alert."

    Disk0

Your HARD drive is SMART failure to predict which monitors the status of operation of the HARD drive. Your HARD drive is facing a problem and CHIP controlling the software predicts that the HARD drive will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends that you create a back-up to the date of your HARD drive. Contact an authorized service provider to check your drive and buy a new replacement if necessary. »

So, after that I decided to run a CHKDSK /f /r. Result: 'windows replaced bad clusters in file name \hiberfil.sys 44990.'

I should be good to go, right? N ° same problem with the precaution of backing up my files.

But this isn't good, is it? If my HARD drive is about to fail why monitor health show that everything is "good"? There is no problem with gel, pxe.boot errors, rattling disc, unusual vibrations or read/write failures.

So, my questions (after all the above and see other threads to ask questions about HARD drive failure messages) are: were there any known issues where the SMART software does not work correctly? Are failure drives hard all from the same manufacturer (I've seen this happen - get a bad batch of a single manufacturer HARD drive)? The health monitor working correctly?

In my opinion your questions cannot be answered simply.
    > Are there any known issues where the SMART software does not work correctly?
How many people must confirm that they have the same problem? I guess this happens from time to time, but you cannot say that this problem is known.
You will always find people who noticed the same issue and not on Toshiba forum only, but on all the forums where people discuss cell phones in general.
    > Is the disk failure hard all from the same manufacturer (I've seen this happen - get a bad batch of a single manufacturer HARD drive)?
How to check or confirm this?

You know, during the first backup all your important data, watch carefully what happens the next few days. If the info appears again and again, contact the nearest service Toshiba and let them Exchange the HARD drive.
The guarantee is valid and it will be free of charge.

  • Re: Satellite U500-1 DR-error on Toshiba HDD/SSD Alert

    Dear,

I uninstalled and reinstalled Toshiba HDD/SSD Alert, but nothing has changed.
My laptop is satellie U500-1 DR and the operating system is windows 7 (64-bit)

To be honest this message is not to me clear that the same tool works on my machine.

Try to reinstall the Toshiba Value added package.

The SSD for my R830 is bit small for me :( Are there chances of swaping the exclusive SSD from Toshiba with a SATA SSD 'standard '? Asuming they are models of the machine's HARD drive, it must be a standard SATA interface and a HDD/SSD Caddy for the R830! I couldn't find info on such an Exchange on the web :( Any ideas?

    Hello

Yes, the laptop supports the SATA controller and you can also use simple disk HARD SATA 1.8 inches.

In my opinion is not a big problem.

  • HDD/SSD location second free Qosmio X 70 - B?

    I want to buy a new laptop series Qosmio X 70 - B.
but I have a question about the equipment of the Qosmio laptop...
    Namely,

It is a second free (EMPTY) 2.5 inch HDD/SSD slot inside the laptop to assemble the second HARD drive?

X 70 series - Had second free HARD drive location... but this new thinner than a series B series... I think that this series B may not...

    I think that the Qosmio X 70 - B is peripheral different.
Its similar to Satellite L70 - B or Satellite S70 - B series and my knowledge the second HDD slot isn't taken in charge.
