Resizing of disk - mirror, copy, etc.

We have a vSphere environment with a certain servers 5.  Initially, when I staged all of these virtual machines, they have been staged virtual.  No P2V migration.  It is also our first go-around with Server 2008 R2.  So, me being the inexperienced VM admin who I am, I size too small drives.  I have also included the drive C and D on the same VMDK.  Further, I'll NEVER do that again.  So my dilemma is I have several servers with too small drive C on the VMDK even as their D drive.  I would like to be able to monitor these servers because they are super important.  One of them should ideally be grouped, but the underlying database software (not one of the big names) does not support this.  I already have several other resized because they are not essential to stay in place.  I just attached to another unit number logic, ghosts of the disk to that LUN and resizes, then the original ghosts.  A lot of time but it worked.  So, I worked on a few ways that I think this might work:

  1. Clone Volume on SAN, tie in the second disc of VM.  F and G (or other) would be an exact copy of C and D.  Remove D and F.  This creates two readers so that we can resize them if necessary.  Renaming from G to D.
  2. Set new volume to VM.  Using drive mirroring, mirror drive D.  D to destroy and break the mirror.  I'm rusty on this process, as I have not had to do since Windows NT.
  3. Ghost new volume on SAN, then re-Ghost back.  Quite tedious.  Really want to do.
  4. Moving a Vmware converter.  A direct conversion is not an option because of the number of transactions that receive this server.  Don't want to do this offline, but if it's our only option then...
  5. Mount the new disk and robocopy D.  D origin of delete and rename new D expand C.  Yet once, file level stuff and will be done in Mode without failure.
  6. Create the copy of VMDK and mount it as another disk, similar to step 1.
  7. Some other miracle software that I don't know.

I have a SQL Server that I need to do the same, but I can take it down on the weekend.  I thought that my best option for SQL Server would be number 6 but for my original server that is on the issue, I think that option 2 might be the way to go.  If someone has done one of these?  My ideal would be some kind of direct repartitioning, but I come in white when I look.

Hello.

I did all of these options (except #2) at least once at some point! They will all work, and the key seems to be generally find the quickest and easiest way to do. Copies of SAN can be very fast, can again VMDK and robocopy. Any approach that allows you to initiate data and can get the changes later is generally solid. This allows you to plan a little time out, stopping apps (get a consistent state) make the final copy/sync operation, make the changes, and then test. I don't know of any miracle for this approach.

Good luck!

I understand what you say, I have created a disk of asm with 500 MB of size using asmtool, so I can't resize using asm instance.

    1. What is the use of asmtool-added option, we can add an existing using this command drive space?

This isn't for adding space, but it adds the label to the disk partition...
    asmtool - add \Device\Harddisk1\Partition1 ORCLDISKASM0
    >

2 can you please explain this more, * it could be increased if you already held 300 total asm 500 disk space *?

Think like OS, you have created a 10 GB partition for disk D:\ example. And now, you create files/folders with size of hugh (as some movies ;)) to drive D:\, so eventually your drive D:\ will fill. This is the case even with your asm disk, once you have used all your available space of the asm disk (that you created through asmtoll), you can not increase.
By asmtool - create D:\Asm_disks\disk3 500, you assign the total size to 300 from the asm disk. Just as you add 10 GB partition for OS...

You come to the backup from my point of view: it could be increased if you already worked 300 asm disk space total 500

I have created the disk with the following text:
    asmtool - create 500 D:\Asm_disks\disk3 > size is 500

    I create diskgroup with
SQL > create diskgroup DB 'D:\Asm_disks\disk3' size disc 300; > Here I wll use only max 300 size of 500 total. So once I get to the threshold of 300, I can increase the asm disk up to 500.
    As
SQL > alter diskgroup DB resizing disk "D:\Asm_disks\disk3' size 500; > Increasing up to 500

Default if the clause you SIZE omit while creating a diskgroup, asm then disc occupies all the available space of the device that you have created by asmtool

    >

    3. What is meant occupation here, not here where we can control the right of occupancy?

We can control as I explained.

  • Satellite A300-1J1 - resize hard disk partitions

Hello, a little long but need the expert advice from you guys.

Recently, I bought the laptop above with a 250 GB hard drive. It comes preinstalled with 3 partitions as follows:

1.5 GB: hidden partition Toshiba System Recovery
    116 F: (C :)) System Partition of Windows Vista)
GB 116: (E) Toshiba System Recovery Image file

My understanding of pass briefly on these forums, the hidden partition houses the mini operating system that controls the real Windows recovery and Image file contains data extracted and installed on the C:? If I'm wrong please let me know!

Anywyay, the problem I have is that I prefer to have all available space mapped in the C:, rather than on the E:. I tried to use the disk management utility to shrink and then expand the partitions, but it wont let me c (I guess it is the system partition, maybe?). I also tried to use the Diskpart.exe program, but to no avail.

The plan I have is to create the recovery disks two DVDs of the utility from the desktop icon.

Copy all the data recovery of E: (approximately 5 GB worth) off the coast of the laptop temporarily.

Manually by using a 3rd party utility drive partition, delete C: and E: and then set the partitions c: = 224GB and E: = 6 GB.

Via the recovery DVD, restoration of Windows Vista in the C:.

Copy all the data recovery back on E: to nowdays fill it and keep it for any future recoveries from disk rather than the DVD.

What I need to know is, is it as simple as that, or I'll run into trouble? HARD drive recovery utility still work the resized partition?

If there are better ways to do or things to watch then please tell me how to on this subject. I would like to know if you guys did the same thing or have left as it came with 2 large partitions.

Thanks for any answers in advance.

    Hello

I think you can have 3 primary partitions.
In your case if you want to create other partitions then you can choose the extended partition!

    Just for everyone here:
Before you modify the partitions (C-system partition or E-recovery partition), you must create the Toshiba Recovery DVD.
So if something goes wrong with you, HARD drive, system, either, you should be able to restore the operating system from the Recovery DVD!

So before you change the partitions-> burn the recovery DVDs!

  • Help resize virtual disk

    Hello

I have a single hypervisor, ESXi 4.1 (no VCenter), manage multiple virtual servers on the same physical server. I want to resize one of the disks in the virtual server (supplied thickness) to a smaller size. I did research a few posts on this, but it is not clear.

If I understand correctly, you are supposed to use Standalone Converter to create a copy of an existing virtual machine and move it to another virtual machine with disk resize to the desired volume. In Standalone Converter, I can choose the source virtual machine, but I have no options to select a destination and do not receive the notice, "this virtual machine already exists.

If anyone has any advice on the best way to do it, your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It was perfectly clear to me. Apology. When you use the converter I use the "Powered on machine" as the type of source (obviously the machine must be turned on to make it work) follow the wizard and select the ESXi host as destination.

  • How to establish a "command bar" which includes: print, copy, etc..

I would like to set up a "command bar" in Firefox similar to this bar that is available in Internet Explorer, showing one touch tools for print, copy, paste, cut, etc.

The 'Tools' menu is not where you would find cut/copy/paste/print...

Please, try the following and see if it is all along the lines of what you want to accomplish:

Click the button for menu chart (3 horizontal bars) at the right end of the main toolbar to open it. Click the commands cut, copy, and paste, and then choose move from the toolbar.

To change its position on the toolbar, or drag it to the graphic menu, you can use the Customize as previously mentioned.

  • On resize virtual disk

As I raised the problem of not enough space for VM some time ago, I thought that I better mention my solution in case anyone has any ideas for improvement.

Take Web [now a little older] advice for partitioning, extension, etc., using the command prompt, same displacement of swap files - at risk of upset Windows - finished with said that he could not do.  OK, XP is pretty pedestrian compared to 7, which set my partitions of HARD drive external with no recourse to the CP. In fact, I assumed that there is no compensation on freebie VMWare Player to extend a volume of the original 40 GB database during installation - there have been, since version 3.

In addition to surfing found a 3rd party program to sort my allocation/size of the VMWare Win XP C: drive. Afraid to dirty up in Windows told me that the program knew what he was doing: I didn't try my luck. I had created a 'logic' 20 GB disk, which gave me a total of 60 GB, but remained only 40 GB for C:. AOMEI Partition Wizard the 20 GB is separated in two, then allowed me to divide in half again and reassign the 5 GB for the basic disk, give me an extra sufficient 10 GB for all tasks.

    Hello

I want to thank you for the sharing of information on a disk for cause of VM space. Your efforts to solve this problem is appreciated.

I'm sure that a lot of people, these measures is useful. Feel free to post your request here on the Forums of Windows, we would be happy to help you.

Anyone know if I can install a regular copy of windows 8 purchased in a retail store instead?

The product key appears to be buried in the BIOS for the moment and I don't know if that will affect activation if I try to install a non - OEM version

The answers on the help on the original problem would be greatly appreciated.

With Windows 8, the product key is embedded in the BIOS and is not visible until you install the operating system. When you use an OEM Windows 8 DVD the BIOS automatically fills in the Code of the key.  You can try to do your own installation of Win 8 media using this ISO download:

Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of vista recovery discs and also ask them if you have a vista recovery partition on your hard drive to reinstall vista back to factory standards

you will normally need to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process vista back to factory standards

  • MD1220 disk expansion & expansion / resize virtual disk

I seek to add 6 new MD1220 to a current configuration of 6 who are chained together.  Two quick questions on this...

    (1) is there as a limit to how many MD1220 can be connected?

    (2) once the virtual disks were created in all of my original 6 devices, is it possible to resize or add to this Setup?  Or I should blow away and recreate?

    Thank you
    Greg

    Hello Greg,.

    (1) is there as a limit to how many MD1220 can be connected?  You can put a maximum of 4 cases with the MD1220 can be chained together (which gives a total of 96 disks per SAS port).

    (2) once the virtual disks were created in all of my original 6 devices, is it possible to resize or add to this Setup?  Or I should blow away and recreate? You can add disks to your virtual drive and can increase the size, but depending on how much space you add that it can be faster to back up data and then recreate the virtual disk and restore your data.  A virtual disk expansion is really slow and it may take weeks or even months depending on the size of the virtual disk.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
