Restore Windows Vista by using Windows.old?

From: ConraDargo

Hey everybody!

Yesterday, alcohol (the application) disgusted so bad that I just had to reinstall everything up from my Windows Vista. Now, since I'm done with a Windows.old folder containing everything in my previous installation of Windows Vista, I was hoping that I could use it somehow for example pick up my sidebar and how I had set up how I want Windows Vista to look (you know with the types of policies and the degree of transparency windows are etc.). But I don't know how I do?

So far I only copied the folder Windows.old in C: user - overwrite all files that could be replaced. I hope it's OK to do? One might think that the application of integrated recovery would be able to take care of that, but apparently not.

Any help is appreciated. I would rather not sit here for like an hour or two during the attempt manually all the way back to normal!

Thank you.

Vista has stopped working so I reloaded Vista from my recovery disc.  All my applications are lost but it created Windows.old.  When I "right click" Windows.old one option is to restore a previus version.  If I restore it will be just restore to a version that is broken and will not work?

Similarly there are instructions on the terminology of the MS site to "restore a computer to a previous Windows Installation.  Again, the question is it just refers to a broken version of windows.

If your Vista came pre-installed in your old PC, then this is an OEM license that cannot be transferred to your new PC.

To analyze and solve problems for Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag (download and save to the desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 ) tool
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the button continue, which will produce the report.

    Hi all

After you have installed windows 8 on a pc comes with windows 7, I learned just learned that I don't have a product key valid win8 because I already used once for an installation of win8 on another pc. Now, I need to go back to win7 because I don't plan on buying another product key.
I know that I can do this with the option to restore from the manufacturer, but it will be a hassle to get back to the top/reinstall all my applications and data.
Is it possible to go on win7 by using the windows.old folder?

    Hello

Whether you are planning to install Windows 7 on the computer that has Windows 8, we can only perform a custom installation.

If you are using an OEM computer, see the link:

    Understanding downgrade rights

If you do not use an OEM computer, you may need to try the following steps to perform a custom installation when you have lost the applications and settings, however the data stored on the C drive will be saved to the Windows.old folder.

For the steps to detalied on how to spend to try solutions by André from the link:

Can I downgrade to Windows 7?

Note: Make sure that you back up important data before performing a custom installation.

  • Is it safe to restore the Windows.old folder?

    BACKGROUND:

I have a Dell Studio 540 in Windows Vista Ultimate which suddenly crashed, then wouldn't restart, saying: "no available boot device." Apparently, the hard drive boot sector had been corrupted. After of the painstaking efforts to save as many as possible training and have unsuccessfully using CHKDSK or Seagate tools to repair the drive, I finally resorted to a clean reinstall using the Dell OEM Windows Vista reinstallation disc. I chose the option to move all old files/folders in a folder Windows.old and I am now able to start Windows. However, all settings prerequisites, programs, files and folders from the previous installation are still in the Windows.old folder. For now, I run a full CHKDSK again (and he says 'Corrupt file attribute Deleting the file record segment X X' so I hope that some repairs happens)...
But what I would do, if possible and if it will not cause problems, use the instructions in this MS support article "how to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista." But before I do that, my question is the following:
    QUESTION:
If I had to do a reinstall of Vista due to damage/corruption of the hard drive, and if all what information has been moved to the folder Windows.old during this process, is it possible that restore the folder Windows.old to the previous installation would restore any damage/corruption existed, thus causing the problem to return or make things worse? Or should I not worry about the restoration of the old "problem"?

    Hello

You can use the restore feature if the previous installation was good.

It is not in your case; If this isn't an option for you.

You can use the windows.old folder to retrieve your data.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/932912

But the programs must be reinstalled form the original media.

And when you're done with the windows.olf folder you can delete.

"How to use the disk cleanup feature to delete the Windows.old folder after you install Windows Vista"

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/930527

And it is perhaps an idea to run Dell Diagnostics and eventually replace your drive hard if it comes up with errors.

As you say that you did a Custom Installation, see if you have a windows.old folder that is available and the formalities required for use according to the instructions above on how to 'dismantling' to an earlier version of the operating system.

If you do not have the above, there is nothing that can be done about it.

  • Gateway DX4300 - how to restore the drivers to the folder window.old.

Hi, I just reformatted my PC. lost all my drivers and ask you how to restore the drivers to the folder window.old. My PC is a gateway dx4300 built in maps Ethernet and video. Unfortunately the gateway doesn't have these drivers.__Thanks.

Oh, how it would help if truly comprehensive published Gateway of material form for a machine... :(

I only am not surprised you found the driver for the modem didn't work - the only one I found was a Vista driver in proportion; Server 2 k 8 x 64 probably don't like that too much.  ;)
But, a little research on Google (and, looking at the list of Vista drivers for this machine) does not give something useful: your card network (the thing you need more) seems to be a Marvell Yukon 88E8075 (possibly 88E8071) Gigabit NIC.  These drivers are available directly from Marvell: http://www.marvell.com/support.html
Just select "88E8075" in the menu dropdown part number, then take the package Windows Server 2008 SP2 (x 64).  Install it, get the machine online, run Windows Update.  I am betting that WU will be able, at a minimum, give you work pilots 'real' (rather than the generic or non-existent drivers you have) so that you can sort.
Honestly, I'm surprised that there is no drivers for this NETWORK adapter - it's a fairly common piece.

  • After the OS from Vista to Windows 7 upgrade, lost bookmarks. Could they be somewhere in "windows.old"?

    Hello

I upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 7 and lost bookmarks, I had in Firefox. Back up my documents files and they are OK. Unfortunately, I don't think to back up my Firefox bookmarks.html file.

However, I did the upgrade of the operating system from the disk and a "windows.old" folder has been created which seems to have a lot of my old files, applications, and others, but I can't find "bookmarks.html" in the firefox folder or in my user folder.

Is there another place in windows.old where bookmarks could be, or a different file name, it may be under?

Please help, there are a few important bookmarks that I lost and which were accumulated over several years.

    Thank you!

Firefox has not used the file bookmarks.html for storage of bookmark since the release of Firefox 2. You need a JSON bookmark backup file or the file places.sqlite. See this:

    http://support.Mozilla.com/en-us/KB/recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile

Your old profile is located here in Windows Vista and Win7:

    drive: \Users\Windows login user name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile_name

You may need to display 'files and hidden folders' in Win7 to be able to access the Firefox profile in windows.old files and the new installation of the OS.

  • Restore Windows Vista to Windows 7

I bought my second hand computer and told me that windows 7 was already installed, even if the laptop computer used Windows Vista originally. However, the copy of windows 7 is currently installed is not genuine. I don't want to buy Windows 7 I'm going well with Vista.

Is it possible to restore windows Vista without an installation disk?
    Appreciate any advice!

    Hello

There are several methods to reinstall Vista.

There is no Windows Vista downloads available from Microsoft.

You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.

They should do this for a small fee.

To reinstall Vista using their recovery disk/s, you start from the 1st recovery disk they provide and follow the manufacturer's instructions to reinstall:

You need to change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order:

How to change the Boot order in BIOS:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/SS/bootorderchange.htm

"How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and replace product manuals.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/326246

This method is probably more through the installation of Windows 7:

And if you have never received a recovery disk when you bought your computer, there should be a recovery Partition on the hard drive to reinstall Vista on how you purchased your computer.

The recovery process can be started by pressing a particular combination of the key or keys at startup. (Power on / start)

    Maybe it's F10, F11, Alt + F10, etc., depending on the manufacturer.

Ask them to the proper key sequence.

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

Here's how to do a clean install of Vista using a DVD of Vista from Microsoft:

"How to do a clean install and configure with a full Version of Vista '

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-Vista.html

And once the operating system is installed, go to your computer manufacturer's website and get the latest drivers for your particular model or laptop computer.

And phone Activation may be necessary when you use the above installation method.

"How to activate Vista normally and by Activation of the phone '
