retrieve the VM from a dead host (see virtual machine running)

Hi, I added a new host for my cluster with 3 guests and migrate a virtual computer to new host without any problems, this isn't a VM FT, all of a sudden showed host vCenter disconencted, but VM has increased and runing.

I managed to RDP to VM for some time, but little VM latter also dead in the water. I have connected to the ESX console he showed a repetitive msg like 'sd0, 0, 0, 0 retry after 360 etc etc.

So we decided to restart (force) the ESX, VM shows disconencted and ongoing run, I had an another VM in this host but did not work, I managed to remove the other VM inventry and don't add to inventry no problem there, it's now at another host.

But my problem is with the one who was running when ESX descended, it is yet to see the runnibg but disconencted, I can't delete inventry, but if I navigate to the data store can I add to inventroy, but I hant done this yet.

Any advice will be appreciated.

(1) try run below console command service, or remotely via putty on running the VM ESX host:

$service mgmt-vmware restart

$service vmware-vpxa restart

(2) if not,.

$vmware - cmd-l (check the virtual machine registered under the correct ESX host)

$vmware - cmd /vmfs/volumes/.../.vmx getstate (check whether or not the virtual computer is running)

$vmware - cmd /vmfs/volumes/.../.vmx stop hard (hard, stop the virtual machine and then try to restart back your VM)

    Hi Letstub,

    There is no need to evacuate your virtual machines from the vSwitch. Enable or disable CDP has no impact on the communications of the network of virtual machines. The following article that explains how to enable CDP mentions this prerequisite:

  • Virtual machines, run extremely slow when the console is consulted 2 virtual machines Windows Server 2008 64-bit, Windows Server 2003 32-bit, 2 VMWare for virtual machine

    I'm in a difficult situtaition here.  I am the daily contact with a new client.  My linux guy, who is also my boss who is very busy, asked me to do some research trying to find answers for what's not on this server. We have a dual Quad Core 2.5 Ghz Lenovo server with 10 GB of ram.  2 500 GB hard drives are Raid 1.  We run Virtual Server VMWare 2 on a Debian with Gnome installation as a user interface for the side of things Linux.  Grub is the boot loader. There are two virtual machines running on the server.  The one machine that serves as a domain controller is a Windows SBS 2008 Server 64 bit, and the secondary machine has no responsibility domain.  The second machine is a Windows Server 2003 32-bit.  the 10 GB of ram 6 GB is allocated to the SBS server and 4 GB to the 2003 server.

    The problem I am running into is that everything is so slow, especially if I connect remotely to do any sort of administration on the network.  Some examples of issues I've noticed is that as soon as I log on the server via Remote Desktop SBS console management Windows Server spike to 80-95% CPU usage and it will not stop unless I close the management console.  Another instance is that if I open Backup Exec 12.5 on the SBS server it will kill the speed of the processor as well.  Long story short, there are a lot of machine to do what we need to do, but something is not configured right and non of us know what it is.  Another point to note is that the server has been in production for about 3 weeks, and the server seemed to have locked up just twice.  My professional guess is that over time, some chose thing is eating causing the crash of the memory.

    Sorry I do not have much technical insight on this topic, but this is the best I have to offer.  Any questions you all have, I'll ask my people and see if I can answer, but I could really use your help here.

    Thank you in advance,

    Heath

    2 things:

    1 you really need hard drives more than 2 in a RAID 1 for proper performance under load. More disks the better. Although I don't think that's what your problem is, he'll probably be the problem Next you will do.

    2. I don't know exactly where the configuration file is on your box of Debian for VMware Server, but you should consider adding the following options in the configuration file (on windows, it's the vmware 'config.ini'):

    prefvmx.minVmMemPct = "100".

    MemTrimRate = 0

    sched.mem.pshare.Enable = "FALSE".

    mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE".

    If you do some research, you can read about what these options (the largest is the memory page sharing - it should only be left on if you have a bunch of similar virtual machines running on the same box, that you don't have.) I honestly know why this is on by default, he kills the CPU when virtual machines are running different operating systems). These are the options that I now use standard in VMware Server deployments, with huge performance increases after you have added the. Just give a try.

    Edit: Also make sure that you have installed in your virtual machines VMware tools.

    Hi Vincent,.

    I think that you have not worked on adf 12.1.3.  In adf 12.1.3 you don't have to explicitly create the association. When you create the EO to your table, Association xxxxFkAssoc, will be created by ADF12.1.3 for you automatically. Please try this and do not answer anything... You can also follow the links below. • Difference between the hosts and virtual machines

    Happy new year!

    I guess that's a stupid question, but I don't know the answer to it.

    I created pools from VM. Some jobs in the pool are hosts and some virtual machines. What is the difference between the hosts and virtual machines. I thought I could only create virtual machines, but I guess I could create hosts as well. -What happened?

    Thanks for your help.

    where does say desktops are hosts?  A host is usually referring to an ESXi server.  A virtual machine is just the guest OS running on the host computer.  A pool is a group of VMs that can extend over several hosts.

  • Question about the location of a host of virtual machines

    I work on temporarily to change the behavior of the DRS for a particular VM (in VI Perl), but my question is more general research of the root 'to host' for a particular virtual machine.

    The installation of the infrastructure program:

    + Folder1

    - + Cluster1

    -

    + Esx1

    -

    + VMs

    -

    + Esx2

    -

    + VMs

    .. .etc

    There are several clusters on different servers in this configuration.

    In order to manage the DRS by VM, I find the cluster that hosts the virtual machine.  The $vm_view - & gt; parent returns one 'value' (other than the name of folder) folder.  It seems that the only way to match the virtual machine to the cluster of accommodation is to do a brute force search, open multiple views and retrieve the values of each until I have a match, and then looking through each cluster in the corresponding folder to find the one that contains the virtual machine.

    Am I wrong?  It is an ugly and ineffective way to find the host for a virtual machine.  If I am not mistaken, are there plans for the addition of the hierarchy of the path to the view of the VM?

    A $view - & gt; config - & gt; value of path containing something like: file - & gt; Cluster - & gt; ESX Server - & gt; VM would be useful.  In addition, a function which maps values of resources to names of resources would be very helpful (with a code depend on a 'value' of the 'field-c125"and any other code that depends on a 'name' of"Cluster1"creates a lot of extra work).

    Thank you

    -David

    You can determine the Cluster that host a virtual machine by browsing through the ResourcePool of the virtual machine. Owner of the ResourcePool is the ClusterComputeResource who manages the virtual machine.

    $vm_view-> resourcePool->owner

    Also, to get the HostSystem that contains the Virtual Machine, you can follow the path

    $vm_view-> run-> home

    Regarding your suggestion to have a predefined path to access a managed entities, we have after explanation.  There are different paths through which you can access to the different managed

    entities of your inventory according to its hierarchy. Virtual Infrastructure gives you the flexibility to design your inventory. You can add a folder or host or a Cluster directly to your data center.

    Then it still allows a folder to have three objects as its child entity. If the path for any entity depends on the structure of your inventory. If a path can be set.

    All managed objects are uniquely identified managed objects ID. Name can be dupilcate for few entities in a data center, you can have two Resourcepools with the same name in different groups. Similarly, you can even named so that each entity is mapped using an object ID, and not a property 'name '.

    Only ks once again for all the help!

    Take a look at Re: how to keep or ignore the UUID when you power on a virtual machine

    This discussion addresses the same topic to answer the question if the VM was copied or moved. As to the significance of this issue, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1541. Basically, it is about creating a new UUID and MAC address of the VM (I copied it) or keep the same as the source (I moved it).

  • Virtual machine running on snapshot but there are no spanpshot on the Snapshot Manager.

    Hi all,

    After a backup with VMware Data Recovery failure (error-3960 cannot suspend virtual machine), I have a virtual machine running on snapshot (see attachment) but there is no snapshot on the Snapshot Manager. Is the command to "consolidate" (I have never used this feature) the solution?

    Thank you.

    Marco.

    OK let me explain.

    As the chain of snapshot is not displayed in snapshot Manager, you can correct this problem in two ways.

    1 engage the snapshot command line. If you are uncomfortable in the command line, follow this KB KB VMware: commit snapshots on ESXi host command line if you are not comfortable follow step 2.

    2. create a new snapshot for this virtual machine (this will create a chain of snapshot, and you can see the snapshot in the Snapshot Manager), once the snapshot is created successfully. You can remove the snapshot in the Snapshot Manager.

    Hope this is clear. Let me know if not

  • Confused by the strategy of allocation of ram ESX virtual machines

    Hello

    I have a "MS SBS 2003 R2 premium" production virtual machine running on ESX 3.5.0 build 123630: VM has 4 GB of allocated RAM.

    On this virtual machine, all processes are running (IE exchange, sql server, antivirus, antispam, mail, archiving,... etc.) and some of them are performing badly (especially exchange and sql mail archiving database); While working on the optimization with the machine to a single application they analized the use of resources within SBS 2003 and told me that there is not enough RAM (only 300 M. By the way it seems to me that on an OS Server using a lot of free ram is a waste of resources, but it is another point...).

    Looking at the windows Task Manager (see attached screenshots) is confirmed, but control use of RAM for RAM usage average VM (with infrastructure VI client) is between 1 and 1.5 GB during working hours (09:00 - 20:00).

    I'm confused: If there are so many processes within the VM asking for memory, why ESX gives only a third of the RAM allocated to the VM? And as all the other 3 GB, are they paged to disk?

    Thanks in advance to help my understanding.

    Guido

    Don't forget the vmkernel activiely tries to save on the memory usage - the tool is Transparent PAge Sharing - ability to the vmkernel to identify identical memory pages and store it once read only memory - so you could very easily have guest o/s of the virtual machine showing that it is using 4 GB but the esx server is only show that vm use - less

    Now on your poor perfromance - what is the configuration of your server ESX - memory, CPU? How many virtual machines are hosted, and what are the respective configurastions - mem, # viretual UC? With a large file of the PAge check the performance graph and see how much memory ball is active, if any?

  • the back and are not virtual machines running on Isilon

    Hello vExperts.

    Could someone please share the details of the back and to not execution of virtual machines on EMC Isilon...

    We have a problem of IOPS / serious storage s, don't have just enough time zones and no money in the budget for more, but we have an Isilon with certain capabilities, I don't have all the details in front of me that I write this message about what nodes and others look like but soon as I have them I will add them in the post.

    For now, if someone wants to throw me some knowledge around deployment of virtual machines on Isilon before blindly go us in that direction that would be great

    Thanks for you input in advance!

    In short: not to run virtual machines on Isilon.  Been there, done that, didn't like it much at all.  You will cause you grief.

    We tried with KVM and ESXi and neither works well. EMC has tried to run, but even their its saying not to.

    I love Isilon but not not for hosting virtual machines.

  • List of Cluster and the virtual machines running on this group

    Hello

    I am looking for a way to discover all of the virtual machines that belong to a cluster. In other words, I want a list that maps a cluster to all virtual machines running on it.

    In the documentation of the API, I find that "ClousterComputeResouce"has a managed object to "HostSystem" reference. "

    And "HostSystem" is a reference to managed object to the 'VirtualMachine'.

    So I can do it like this: ClusterComputeResource-> ManagedObjectRefence-> ManagedObjectRefence (VirtualMachine)-> whatever_properties_I_need_from_the_VM (HostSystem).

    However, this would cause a lot of ' Vim::get_views"calls within a"foreach"loop." It would be a deterrent to performance as the vCetner in question has ~ 50 clusters and has ~ 3500 running VMs.

    I think this was going to literally kill the VirtualCenter with so many API calls.

    My Question: is there an effective way to find Cluster and their respective VMs in vSphere SDK Perl.

    In vSphere client, we get the tab 'Virtual Machine' when we click on the Cluster and you can see all the virtual machines that belong to this cluster. So I hope that there must be an easier way.

    Thank you.

    Hello

    You don't need the host_view for this action. Why don't you use begin_entity for views of the vm?

    my $cluster = 'cluster1. "

    My $cluster_view = Vim::find_entity_view (view_type-online 'ClusterComputeResource',

    filter => {"name"-online qr / ^ $cluster / I});
    {if ($cluster_view)}
    My $vm_views = Vim::find_entity_views (view_type-online 'VirtualMachine',

    begin_entity => $cluster_view.

    Properties-online ['name']);
    foreach {$vm_ref(@$vm_views) my
    print $vm_ref--> name. » \n » ;
    }
    }

    Hope that helps!

  • Problem with the mouse and the network after the upgrade VMware Tools and hardware to virtual machine

    Hello world...

    I just upgrade my ESX 3.5 servers to vSphere 4.1. All this work is very well with the upgrade right now.

    After that, I tried to mise a niveau of VMware Tools and hardware of VM for my virtual machine and the problems started.

    I tried with two different VM (the two Windows 2003) and the problem appears for the two VM.

    I don't want to test another VM of the different operating system now, I'm afraid to go too far with update of Pentecost the problem I have now.

    I tried two VM to be sure that the problem is not only on a virtual machine.

    First of all, the mouse.

    My mouse has jerky movement. The button works, but sometimes I have to click several times to select what I want.

    I tried to uninstall the mouse in Device Manager and reinstall, but not really Pentecost improvement which (buttons works better, but... not so sure).

    Second problem.

    After you restart the server after VMmware tools and hardware virtual machine, the network link not working anymore.

    When I go to my network card configuration, IP settings are reset in DHCP mode.

    If I go again all my IP settings, Windows says:

    The IP address is hidden from the network and Dial-up connections

    folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a riser

    It does not work. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and

    they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result

    in the incorrect system configuration. You want to enter a different IP address

    address of this adapter in the list of IP addresses for this card in the list

    Advanced IP address in the dialog box

    If I answer Yes to this, I have to enter a new IP address, and of course, this is not what I want to do.

    If I don't answer, the network working again.

    I think it is a strange message but the work of the vSphere maybe network now.

    Anyone have any idea why my work network and mouse as this upgrade after.

    All other VM that is not upgraded so far works great.

    Thanks in advance...

    (1) make sure that your hardware acceleration is safe enough. I got the upgrade down my hardware acceleration several times already.

    (2) sounds like the new drivers for your NIC cards took over and VMware is basically a new card NETWORK for you. Follow these steps to disable it:

    (a) open a command prompt

    (b) type (without quotes): 'set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices = 1' and press ENTER.

    (c) type (without the quotes): "start devmgmt.msc"

  • What is the type of object to use for virtual machine model in the Points of Extension?

    Hello

    I added my plugin point of extension vsphere.core. ${objectType} .monitorViews. My plugin is for all types of objects (vm, file, vApp, resourcePool, etc) except the model of the virtual machine. My understanding is that the vm object type would be required for the virtual machine template, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Am I missing something here? Should the plugin appear for the model of the virtual machine when I use the vsphere.core.vm.monitorViews extension point?

    Sorry, I got confused by your original question. ExtensionPoint id you are looking for is the one for adding views a model virtual machine monitor tab:

    model.monitorViews vSphere.Core.
