RoboHelp and FrameMaker

Hello

I have a few big projects RoboHelp 6. I'm debating whether to upgrade to RoboHelp 9 or to convert my FrameMaker projects (I have an existing license). The main goal of my project is a tutorial online (HTML), but I have to also CHMS and PDF files. My questions are:

(1) is there a reason to prefer the RoboHelp 9 FrameMaker in my case?

(2) how migration will be difficult to RoboHelp 6 of FrameMaker? Or RoboHelp 9?

Thanks in advance

Most people do the TCS of FM for HR integration because FM can create more beautiful PDFs than HR (especially if your documents are long). However, many people do all their creation in HR and then uses the SSL of printed documents to get their PDFs with Word. The upgrade of a RH6 to RH9 project will probably be smooth, but make sure that you have a backup before you start. You may have difficulty with ordered/numbered lists and the transition to XHTML RH8 +. There is no passage cleared of HR to the FM band. You will need to cut & paste or export to Word and import back into FM for more content.

    Hello

I produce 10 Framemaker unstructured manuals.  I want to take these manuals online, create a help file and possibly have a manual on an ipad/iphone.  I have the following questions:

From Framemaker, Robohelp will be a logic program to learn?

RoboHelp works along the coast Framemaker?

Why not use of Madcap Flare?

    Thank you!

With the Technical Communication Suite allows you to connect your FM files in a HR project and publish your output directly from FM. Without the Technical Communication Suite, you need to create in FrameMaker, import files into RoboHelp and publish your output from there. The disadvantage of this approach is that you would have to re - import the FM files whenever update you. In summary, the Technical Communication Suite just make things easier.

  • "Unable to install the plugin from RoboHelp for FrameMaker...." »

    Hi-

I have 9 Frame and a copy of RoboHelp 8.0.0.203 demonstration and works in Windows 7 (all of a sudden. Yet to learn my way in the operating system after a catastrophic failure of the weekend with my trusty little machine XP.) I have no TCS2; just these two stand-alone tools. I have a book of frame I need to turn into contextual HLO and am auditioning Robo for the task.

No dice. Whenever I try to import (see below re linking) I get an error message in a box marked "RHUtils": "unable to install the plugin from RoboHelp for FrameMaker. If please close FrameMaker and try again. »

With your permission, I'll cover a few points in the order in which they come to mind:

== > Initially I tried linking, hoping of course to the advantages of the single-sourcing. I learned in this forum and elsewhere (-btw, thanks for this great resource) I need the TCS2 in good faith in place to connect. Thought that I could import for now instead of it, just to see how it happened; received the same error message.

== > It was AFTER I had done the research and on the Adobe site (http://www.adobe.com/support/robohelp/misc.html) found this: "the plug-in for RoboHelp, FrameMaker FrameMaker users allows quickly convert any number of books for a simple import or FrameMaker files in RoboHelp 2002 and X 3.» RoboHelp X 4 includes the plug-in! For RoboHelp, FrameMaker plug-in is only available for Windows. To install the plug-in, unzip the RoboMIF.dll into the Plugins folder in the installation of FrameMaker folder (normally found in C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.0\fminit\Plugins)...   Once the plug-in has been installed, restart FrameMaker. FrameMaker now includes a RoboHelp menu. "OK: I have downloaded RoboMIF.dll, installed according to the instructions, rebooted just in case, and now"Adobe RoboHelp"actually appears in the menu bar in the frame. I however always the error message whenever I try to import (now).

== > For several of these attempts Frame was indeed closed. For several other Frame opened to the entry page and nothing else. No apparent effect, anyway.

== > Import and link Word files seems to work very well - which is cool, but my document is in frame at the moment. I know I can convert, but up to now to convert the word seems to need to get all references, what I did in the framework. Doable but not my first choice.

== > I found a thread of editors at http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg18576.html / / www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] msg18576.html relating to this problem. The recommendation, (published here for brevity), who was the author:

    1. locate [the] Maker.ini file and ideally make a backup of it, just in case.
    2. in the [APIClients] section of the maker.ini file, add the following line:

    RH4FMver9 = Standard, RH4FMver9, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2\Adobe RoboHelp 8\RoboHTML\RHFrameMakerServer9.dll,all

    3. you should now be able to launch RoboHelp and 'link' files, FrameMaker, FrameMaker application should launch correctly.

This doesn't seem to be my answer because I don't yet own TCS2. This path does not exist.

(I still get excellent advice of training provided by this answering machine, RJ Raquez, to http://blogs.adobe.com/rjacquez/2009/05/linking_framemaker_9_books_in.html.)

In any case, this is where I realized that I was, at least for now, of ideas. Does anyone have more?

    Thank you-

    Anne

If you do not want to go down the road of miftogo mentions Arnis, you can always download the demo of TCS2 - it is fully functional for the period of the demo. I am tempted to install it in its own virtual machine (or another machine entirely) so that you do not get the demo interfere with your legitimate copy of FM9.

  • RoboHelp for FrameMaker requirements

I have v1.1 of RoboHelp for FrameMaker and FrameMaker v7.2. RoboHelp complains that FrameMaker is not installed. V7.2 is not supported? Is there a way I can deceive RoboHelp to using anyway (change file name, etc.)?

As far as I know, RHF supports FrameMaker 7.2, 7.2 is out significantly after RHF. He seems to recognize FrameMaker 7.1, but has problems with newer versions to distill that are provided with the latest versions of FrameMaker. I guess the 7.0p578 frame would be the best option for the Interior with RHF.

However, you CAN have several versions of FrameMaker on the same system. So, you could have framework 7.0 (for use with RHF) and Frame 7.2 for other projects on the same system. Save your FrameMaker files in MIF files for maximum portability of the different versions.

The sticking point will be to distill - several versions of Distiller on a system can cause all sorts of issues.

  • RoboHelp and RoboInfo. Time to upgrade?

Our company uses RoboHelp and RoboInfo 5 versions. We use this system to create and publish our policy to our intranet manual. I was responsible for getting information about the upgrade process, because our search functions start to fail and other various problems come from is no longer support system. What I've read so far, RoboHelp system is now based on Java and runs on Tomcat (Apache). What worries me, because we are a strict Microsoft store here and would be VERY reluctant to install a separate web server just for our policy manual. I need to know a few things before crossing the and do upgrade.

    1. what features, if I lose by opting to use IIS instead of Tomcat?

    2. is it easy is the migration of data from RoboHelp/Info v5 to the current RoboHelp Version 8?

    3. what should I know else enter this upgrade?

What I learned about the system, I think that the index/search functions work with a SQL server server. They migrate easily with the upgrade? It is the process of upgrading all inclusive or I will be responsible to manually move the data to the wire to the new systems?

OK, so the output of RHX5 was WebHelp Pro and the HR server application must have been used to host it. You can easily move your source RHX5 files to RH8. We did just that when RH8 was released. Also, we have implemented a Server 8 HR solution although we weren't using previous versions.

The undelying HR Server 8 architecture is very different from earlier versions of RoboHelp Server. If you want to migrate your existing SQL database to the new version, I can't see a problem with that. Part of the installation is the creation of a database, so you should just point the HR server to the existing SQL database application.

If it helps, my blog has a number of messages on our RHX5 to RH8 migration experiences and implementation of HR server. You can access it from my signature below.

  • Frame corrupt import doesn't properly to RoboHelp and cannot save the MIF FM

    Hello

I have Adobe Technical Communication Suite 3.0, which has 10.0.2.249 in FrameMaker.

I created a user guide in FrameMaker, some of the chapters for which I imported from the word and the little bits of text here and there which I copied and pasted from Word.

    (a) when I created a RoboHelp project and imported the image files, some content has disappeared. Here, a phrase, something smart here, not just content, I copied and pasted.

    (b) I thought I would like image files. MIF and then reopen it in frame to get rid of corruption. They recorded under. MIF very well and they reopen with frame very well. However, when I try to save as. FM, I get the message that. MIF can be saved as. FM.

I checked the extension in the Save slot, and there was no mention of. MIF.

What should do? (Suggestions for one) or b)?

There is a bug in the Save as dialog box. If the file name is votre_fichier. FM, you

can choose MIF as the file type in the file Type, FrameMaker box

the name of the file to yourfile.mif and records them as mif.

But, for some reason if you have a file name of toto. MIF and choose

FM in the Type dialog box, you get this error message and the

can't save. The solution is to remove the extension of the MIFID in

the file name. Then the recording works fine and the file is renamed with a

    Extension of the FM.

In other words, MIF FM recording works as expected. FrameMaker renames

the file extension and stores it in the new format. But, in a MIF to FM

Save, FrameMaker refused to rename the extension of the MIFID. (There may be one)

reason for this?) You must remove the extension or registration will not take place.

I will report it as a bug.

  • RoboHelp 9, framemaker 10 conversion not in order of the chapter, but the FM files alphabetically

    Hi all

Whenever I am FM convert PDF or web help it does not arouse the document in the order of the chapters, on the contrary, it generates by alphabetical order of the names of files FM.

    Thanks in advance

    HI vthakur,

Please check the path of the file defined in the book of FrameMaker TOC is valid and during update/generate the link a good table of contents is generated (you should have a valid TOC generated for the book in FrameMaker).

    OR

You can always Autocreate a table of contents in RoboHelp by Autocreate TOC TOC Pod button (can also rearrange according to your need).

what you are referring to production seems to be due to the reorganization of the theme files in the Windows folder.

Please validate the above points and confirm if RoboHelp fails to generate a table of contents, or TOC file is missing in FrameMaker.

  • Under the same 11 RoboHelp and RoboHelp 10 system

    Background

    • Windows 7, 64-bit operating system.
    • Updated 10 RoboHelp to RoboHelp 11 this week. Updated my project RH10 WebHelp Proj (released with our 2.0 application) to start to edit for immediate release with 3.0 application next June.
    • The upgrade has a Uninstall RoboHelp 10.
    • I work from within Visual Studio 2010 Professional. (I know this isn't a thread of Source code control, but my problems are closely linked here.)
    • I create WebHelp Pro (even if we not yet publish to the HR server, although we are working on that!).
    • I check the output in release in source control folders, and the build recovers thanks to our application installation files.

    Questions

    • If I need to update the app 2.0 Help, anyone know if I can still use RH10 for updating this project? (I asked a consultant to Adobe, but have not yet heard back.)
    • If I can't use RH10 to update the app 2.0 Help (and to open the project 2.0 in RH11 and, therefore, be updated), are there new things in RH11 that could affect the production of WebHelp Pro and, therefore, affect the use HTM Pro WebHelp files by the application? (Our release engineer is of the opinion that, for the purposes of version control, I have need to make changes to the project 2.0 in the same Client HR used to develop.)

    Thanks for any help.

There is no published details on exactly what is happening on the upgrade, but to the best of my knowledge, he is mainly the internal files. It can modify the HTML code but except when Rh8 came with a major change in the formatting of the lists, I doubt that this would affect anything. However, Adobe may only give you a definitive answer, and without it, there could be a "told you so" the release engineer.

  • To establish a link between RoboHelp and version RoboSource Control database

I have problems with the connection between RoboHelp (version 8.0.2) and the database of version RoboSource Control. I can't communicate properly with RoboSource Control, but when I try to open the project in RoboHelp (using the same connection settings), I get a dialogue box that says unable to connect. An interesting note is that when I search the database, I can see (and its content) fine in RoboHelp. The only problem, the connection occurs when I try to open the project in RoboHelp. How can I fix?

Although my experience was different from those described on this page, replacing the RSO3MiddleTierService.exe file as shown in this topic: http://helpx.adobe.com/robohelp/kb/cant-check-files-robosource-control.html solved my problem too. :-) (In case someone else runs into this same problem). Fixed! Hooray.

  • RoboHelp and editing of HTML (.htm) files

I need to create a software documentation project where the deliverable will consist of a loose collection of files HTML (.htm) (not a website with index.htm).

I don't see an option in Robohelp 9 that allows me to publish my project (topics ToC) to files HTML (converting a theme to the html file). I know that each subject in a project is stored as an .htm file, however, I also read somewhere (in this forum I believe) they are not exactly web and Robohelp project files ready - for example, external link in a topic railways use slash reverse instead of a slash.

It seems strange that I will need to find a html editor tool because robohelp is a html editor that does not publish to HTML.  (I just heard a salesman say, hey, that's how we cross sell products like dreamweaver).

Bottom line, is robohelp not the right tool for editing html files?

    Hello

To clear up a misunderstanding: RoboHelp publishes to HTML and RoboHelp is not a dedicated HTML editor. Indeed, the source of RoboHelp files are not ready for a Web site. You can generate HTML files free of RoboHelp which may suit your need. The table of contents, index and glossary is then generated in the form of simple XML files. (Use a SSL XML output to generate XHTML.)

If RoboHelp is the right tool for you, is something only you can decide. RoboHelp does not aim to be an HTML editor. It is a HAT tool with many options focused on the creation of help, such as variables, snippets, review work flow, a simple table of content creation, etc. Of course, you can manually edit the HTML code of the subjects, but RoboHelp is designed so that you don't have to if you don't want that.

If you do not want one of these features, a free product like Notepad ++ may be your best choice. Hope this clarifies. Feel free to post back with any questions.

  • FrameScript and FrameMaker Q version compatibility

Hello, a colleague asked me to find out if FrameScript version 2.1R3 works with FrameMaker 7.2.

-He's done some scripts for FrameMaker 7.0 and he needs to make sure that the scripts will run on FrameMaker 7.2.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Donna

If FrameScript 2.1R3 is already installed with their FrameMaker 7.2, then scripts should work properly. However, it does not resemble FrameScript 2.1R3 was available for FrameMaker 7.2 (see http://framescript.com/index.php?q=node/76), so you can have difficulties to install version 7.0 with FrameMaker 7.2.

If your user of FrameMaker 7.2 does not yet installed FrameScript, it may be useful to the more recent version, since you will have to pay for it anyway.

  • Integration of RoboHelp and ClearCase

    Hello

Could someone suggest me the steps or URLs on how to integrate with ClearCase RoboHelp?

    I'm looking for:

Open the project HR of ClearCase.
    Edit the files.
Save the project changed in ClearCase

    Pls suggest...

I don't think that "integration" is possible; "relaxation" is perhaps the best hope. I ran some tests with copies of your project first, especially if several authors are involved. In addition, to a RoboHelp project, do not add the LDB, PSS, HHP, and DPC files to source code control.

The process for any product of source code control is:

    (1) your IT peeps privileges to license to you.
    (2) you create a directory in the source code control that will correspond to your project directory.
    (3) you add your source control source files.
    (4) extract you the files, edit and check them.
    (5) when you add files to your project, add them to the source control.
    (6) when you delete files in your project, you normally delete first source code control.
    (7) to generate your output to a different directory (not default! SSL! The project directory). In fact, I recommend that you use source code control or not!

    Good luck

  • RoboHelp causing these accidents?

Everyone knows this behavior before, and if so, is my right computer scientist that RoboHelp is the cause?

Whenever I try to work with images (saving them after their creation in PhotoShop, or their import into Dreamweaver or FrameMaker for use in our docs), what app I'm in freezes up. This does not happen in all folders containing images - sometimes I can work with images in a particular folder for several hours, but then, all-of-a-sudden, the file will become corrupted, and whenever I try to import an image in this folder, or save an image, the application, I work with (Dreamweaver or FrameMaker) crashes. And if I try to get the file through Windows Explorer, which, also, hang or freeze every time I try to run the offending file.

The it guy at my company said that it has seen this before on machines that have RoboHelp and FrameMaker installed. He said that RoboHelp does not play well with other applications. But I find that hard to believe.

Here is what I have observed this problem:

-When I try to import an image into a document when you use Dreamweaver or in FrameMaker, RoboHelp, enforcement sometimes hangs or freezes. This seems to only happen with certain folders that contain pictures - more images from different folders seem to import with no problems at all.
-There is no visible trend as to why or when it does happen, but once it happens, I can't work with this file never - not in any of these applications, or Windows Explorer.
-If I close everything and restart, the problem does not go far.
-If I try just open Windows Explorer and extract the image of the offending file, I can't - explore just freezes or crashes completely. When it freezes, I go to the Task Manager to end the task.
-This does not happen with all of the folders that contain pictures, only some seem to be affected. A folder can work perfectly for several weeks, then suddenly corrupt. But once it is corrupted, it's over. I can never open or work with this folder again.
-This only occurs with folders that contain pictures. Folders that contain text documents (such as Word, FrameMaker or RoboHelp docs seem not to be affected).
-If, physically, I copy and paste the folder on my desktop, the problem disappears. I can import with no problems at all. If I rename the folder and copy it to its place of origin with a new name, the problem is always solved. But if I can delete the corrupted original folder and rename a new one with the old name of the folder, the problem starts again.
-I can not simply rename the files or move them somewhere else b/c, we have literally hundreds of images in 10 different online and printed documents that are referenced from different files, so if I try to move images elsewhere, all the other jump of references.
-J' tried to do a disk cleanup and defragmentation procedure, but that did not help.

    Any ideas? Suggestions? Thoughts?

    Karyn Hunt

Well, I think I have located the problem and it wasn't RoboHelp. There seems to be a problem with a very old version of PhotoShop (6.0).

Here's how I figured it: got the new laptop (Dell), installed the OS (Windows XP), introduced the offending (crash) images on them (tested) successfully opened. Seeing that everything was fine, I put a restore point - Restore Point #1. Installed FrameMaker 7.1 more patches, tested, everything was fine, then set another restore - Restore Point point #2. Installed RoboHelp X 5, tested, and everything was fine so together a third point of restoration and so on and so on until what PhotoShop 6.0, when the problem started again. No sooner had I installed it that attempts to open images crashed in PhotoShop. Tried to import the same images in FrameMaker and frame crashed. So I used system restore to roll back a single installation and voila! The problem was gone.

If this file to install PhotoShop goes to the trash and we do the upgrade.

  • Adobe RoboHelp 8 is out! TCS2, too

I am using RoboHelp since 1992 and it is huge. Not only is Adobe RoboHelp 8 released, but the whole Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 (now with Adobe Photoshop!)

Individual trial for outputs, but also the range TC 2 is ready for download and I certainly recommend in this case.

I had the privilege of beta testing the entire suite and for articles on our "wish list" made in this version. Congratulations goes out to Jenet, Akshay Madan, Vivek Kumar, RJ Jacquez and so many people who put their heart and their mind in as many new features. I don't know that our friend across the pond, Peter Grainge and Rick Stone Robowizard will soon be chime with their take. I hope that we will hear some of the other beta testers, too.

There will be a lot more information published by a lot of people I don't know, but I have collected a tour d'horizon of the links on my site that you might find useful. They are all there are collected for quick reference. I'll put some of my own original content as well.

    www.hypertexas.com

There will be 8 Adobe Captivate demonstrations and the very that asked the examiner as the year 60-page guide last with tutorials and it posted soon. I suggest you give it a test drive.

It's funny. After 3 outputs within 2 years and a major suite Adobe, I don't hear a lot of these opponents strong if Adobe is more RoboHelp and FrameMaker support. I can't imagine a software company putting more faith and engineering in this product for technical writers and instructional designers e-learning group.
    Thanx
    John

    Hey, Jared!
Good news to find out how to answer these questions to upgrade as managers evaluate the new version.

Of Adobe RoboHelp 8 reviewer's Guide has just been posted. He has 61 pages of details piece-by-piece with Try-It-exercises that can be downloaded and used in conjunction with the Guide of the evaluator to explore and test new features.

You follow this link, don't forget to download the PDF of the evaluator Guide so that you can more comfortably play all 7 of the Adobe Captivate feature/how-to demos that are shipped by the end of the Guide.

The Adobe Tech Comm blog also has a summary of the features in RoboHelp 8 and more links.

It is certainly a major, major version. The thing I like is that it facilitates not only the jobs of the author, but also has a lot of features for the end user - especially with the navigation and * search * (always a popular request)

    Thank you
