Round Robin
Hello
Can I know what is alternate., it's a way of storage? Can someone please develop on that? or any link that explains things around that?
Thank you
Prashant
Round Robin is a strategy of creating paths to storage, it is fixed, more recently used and round robin.
Basically, if you have active/active paths in your data store you can use RR this alternate paths so that the load is balanced on between two active paths, where fixed and MRU used only one path unless there is a power failure.
Not all storage arrays are supported RR... Here's a quick link

change the path of the fixed path selection strategy to round robin
two questions
1. is it safe to change the strategy of selection of the fixed path to round robin with the servers in the data store (round robin done work in our environment)
2 can "lost access to the volume" messages be caused by too many servers using the same path of data warehouses. Many of the servers here use a couple of paths on a fixed track, instead of all four paths on round robin. I was wondering if the lost volume messages access were caused due to heavy traffic causing data 'pulse' written in the expiration time.

You can, but first make sure that your table provider supports this configuration.

Buenas,
queria formular una pregunta relacionada con the caminos Round Robin balanceo politica. Por el defecto e/s operation limit of esta politica in vsphere 5 are of 1000 comandos E/S.
Hay several recommandations al respecto, sobretodo TR el trafico cabina dado por alguna VM than genere viene muchas helps in las una config del IO operation limits con bajos values (1 to 3 E / S in los detrimento 1000 comandos E/S por defecto), pueden ser mejores.
Hay of autores that defienden esa causa having into account back handicaps, como el mayor consumo procesador nuestro ESXi host para manage el traspaso los comandos por los cada tan poco tiempo o paths well cabinas that can use hidden a nivel puerto y hacerlas volver a poco Louis (hidden lately aunque a nivel puerto aren't often find in las nuevas cabinas).
In Relación a esto, ¿habeis hecho algun cambio in los para operation IO Round Robin, monitor objetivamente showing of flow limitation?
Por otra parte, con Round Robin, in case of caida UN camino (is corta el cable, oh), if el camino vuelve life, Robin volvera a utilizarlo para enviar comandos o ¿Round is el aislara?
Saludos thanks
Hola compañero,
answering intento a tus dudas.
None are to change el PSP obligado a Round Robin. ES mas hacerlo sin a good reason can give problems.
VMware is select los protocolos multipathing than van a funcionar in 99.99% of cases, para 'tocarlo' hay than estar seguro what y porque is hace.
If to select el operation IO limit a 1 en PSP el, usually to experimenta UN Mayor flow acceso a esa LUN in concreto of the cabina.
Desde mi experiencia, is can pasar a Round Robin con el limited IO operation has 1, siempre as manufacturer of the cabina datos el asi lo explains in its document of best practices.
Por ultimo, if to cae UN camino, y to vuelve a recover pasado a tiempo, el alternating vuelve a usar el camino con normal. No todos los types for PSP is compartan asi (consulta P.D2 mi)
Espero ayuda sido acercado

Why you should not use NMP/round robin MPIO with MSCS in ESXi <; 5.5?
There, could someone explain to me why MSCS do not work well with turnstile NMP on ESXi < v5.5? Best explanation I've seen is that each path is "seen" differently by the guest operating system continuously, send commands to reset and SCSI reservation everything slow. No doubt this could complicate situations requiring a turnaround as well...
Looking for a good explanation - which would also help me to understand how it "works" in ESXi 5.5 + now.
According to Cormac Hogan:
In the past, political path of round robin might not supported on MSCS shared storage. It was because of the inability to release SCSI reservations on some routes when the reserve has been placed on a different path on the same disk. With the release of vSphere 5.5, this problem has now been addressed and we support RR on storage that is consumed by the MSCS nodes.

Change the path to the Round Robin of the newest storage used
Dear Experts,
For one of our guests (on two hosts total), which is presented with two data warehouses:
-Storage 1 (works with RoundRobin vmware)
-Storage 2 (works with most recent used vmware)
I need to know if I can change it so that things work and there are two VM in this data store 'storage 2'.
All the foregoing gave two data warehouses are working with (Round Robin vmware) with host 2nd in our environment
Please notify
Just did on one of the used data stores. No problems.

PowerCLI, Multipathing change: fixed RDM and VMFS of Round Robin
With the new improvements in vSphere native mulit pathing (NMP) in 5.1, I tried to change my LUN to use repetition alternated according to EMC with my flare VNX practices code.
However, I also have MSCS clusters that don't support a fixed mode according to the http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1037959.
Later, I want to get all my VMFS volumes and set them to Round Robin and let all of my RDMs set to fixed.
I'm hoping to dynamically so that I can leave it with the admin here to run whenever he wants, but I'm fighting to achieve.
What I've tried so far.
I can get all my LUNS with these commands.
$esxcli
= Get
-EsxCli
$Allmyluns = Get - esxcli.storage.nmp.device.list () | Where {$_ .device - like 'naa.*'}
I can get all my RDM with this command
$RDMS = get - vm | Get-hard drive | where {$_.} SCSIcanonicalname - like 'naa.* ' | Select SCSIcanonicalname
I can put the method once I have the storage in this way
$esxcli
= Get
-EsxCli
Foreach ($lun in $allmyluns({
$esxcli.nmp.device.setpolicy($null, $_.Name,
"VMW_PSP_RR")
}
I have also thought about writing a csv or text file with the first command and trying to remove the entries with the second command but that is a bit past me, and I may be trying to over-complicate things unnecessarily
.
But what I can’t do is work out how to get a list whenever I want that has all the VMFS LUNS but not any of the RDM LUNS. So I can dynamically feed this into a script which updates VMFS pathing to Round Robin.
Any help, input or ideas would be greatly appreciated
This should help you all VMFS LUNS.
Get-Datastore | where {$_.Type -eq "VMFS"} | %{ $_.ExtensionData.Info.Vmfs.Extent | %{ $_.DiskName }}

Hello people,
I'm a bit confused. I have my now see that they are defined as VMW_SATP_ALUA_CX and storage (EMC CX) defined on the failover mode 4, host rebooted. I think that now, I can go in each data store and change the path of 'Round Robin (VMware)' selection. I do a lot of MSCS and noticed that the Round Robin is not supported with SAM. I found the underside of VMware. He says Round Robin PSP is not supported for the LUNS mapped by RDM, but then there is a "note" that says with NMP, clustering is not supported when the value of the Round Robin. It's my confusion is not the note by repeating exactly what he says just on top of it, or I'm not getting something? Also, I'm running 5.0, are there other changes that I have to do to make this work?
Strategy selection of the path (PSP)
Round Robin PSP is not supported for the LUNS mapped by RDM used with shared cluster storage. If you decide to use PSP Round Robin with your storage array, or if the version of vSphere to uses the default values for PSP Round Robin for the table in use, you can change the PSP claiming the RDM LUN above other PSP. For more information, see editing a unit number logic to use another path selection policy (PSP) (1036189).
Note: with native multipathing (NMP), clustering not is not supported when the strategy of path is set to Round Robin. For more information, see vSphere MSCS Setup Limitations in the configuration for Failover Clustering and Microsoft Cluster Service Guide for ESXi/ESX 4.x or 5.x ESXi.
Any help would be great. This confuses me
-MN
For data warehouses, use RR and ALUA (4 failover mode) mode.
For members of the MSCS (RDM) cluster, you will need to use fixed.

Hello, a few weeks ago, I found a command when issued via an SSH session, set multiple paths for all the LUNS of Round-Robin. It was a single line command that worked for all LUNS existing and new LUNS after a reboot.
However, I can't find now command - does anyone know the syntax?
Thank you

Hi all
I have several things to add here:
* I have filed a bug for the initial post - error message is dark - the message in this case (referring non-existent namespace) should be "there are no namespace with the same name.
On the the problem with the 'boot' setting - you run the command when you are connected to the vCenter Server? If so - try to run the same command directly against the ESX host. I look a little more on this subject...

Can definition of Round Robin way strategy - I just use the GUI?
I have HP EVA6400 arrays and also HP XP20000.
I use ESX 4.1 U1 and the recommendation of HP is using Multipathing Round Robin policy.
I guess I could just use the vSphere client and select configuration > storage > datastore > properties > manage paths > Round Robin > change
This approach would have certainly changed politics of this server for the selected LUN path, then repeat for each. But I read something on a blog lastnight that said having to perform the setting of the path of the CLI to set VMW_PSP_RR nmp esxcli.
Can someone enlighten me please.
Thank youYou can use the command-line like esxcli well:

Fault of DNS round robin to 2 connection view servers
Help! We have recently improved view to 4.6 and have now 2 view connection servers (viewconnect2.wheatonma.edu and viewconnect3.wheatonma.edu) set up with DNS round robin. We have customers to enter the name "viewconnect.wheatonma.edu" and there are 2 records to change the name in DNS to what he (to the IP address of viewconnect2, the other to the IP address of viewconnect3). We found only intermittently when a View Client tries to connect they will get the following error
"View server connection authentication failed. Initialization failed when connecting to the server ""https://viewconnect.wheatonma.edu:443' " "
Because now we have just removed one of the mentions A name so viewconnect.wheatonma.edu just points to the IP address of viewconnect3.wheatonma.edu and everything seems to work well.
I have the SSL from GeoTrust certificate issued for viewconnect.wheatonma.edu correctly installed on both servers, so I don't think that is the question.
In View manager when I check the settings for each server under "Display Configuration"-> "Servers" here is what I got when I edit entry of each server.

Am I missing something? Is DNS round robin is not supported for the connection view servers? The firewall is disabled on the connection view servers
Thank you
The problem is that your "External URL" settings are wrong.
These must represent URLS that get directly on the specific login server and cannot be load-balanced or go through a round robin DNS entry.
Set the external URL:
Viewconnect2 https://Viewconnect2:443 or https://155.47.24.11:443
Viewconnect3 https://Viewconnect3:443 or https://155.47.24.12:443
This way your connection secure tunnel will go to the same server connection as was chosen by repeating alternating DNS or load balancing.
Your users always enter https://Viewconnect:443 the view of customers.
There is an example here http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-14974
Select this option.

Hello-
I have a Clariion CX4 flare 30.x with a variety of production ESX and ESXi hosts linking into it. I think light ALUA and replace my journey Round Robin to get performance gains, on what I read. If you are familiar with this process can you comment on 1) do you really see gains. (2) any risk to the process that I should know. (3) commented generally on this...
Thank you in advance...
Hello
ALUA and Roundrobin is the configuration that EMC recommend (unless you are using their Powerpath for which they promise even more performance).
See here: http://www.vmwareinfo.com/2010/07/how-to-enable-alua-and-round-robin.html
for instructions on how to put in place and some performance results.
We have implemented without problem, but have not yet done for performance comparisons.

Can we use "Round Robin" political path active / Passive SAN?
Hello
We use EMC CLARiiON CX4 SAN. So what we know, it's an asset / liability SAN.
We would like to know if we can use "Round Robin" way so that we can get better IO performance? Is there any SAN required tweaking or ESX host?

CF, multipath round robin ESXi 4.1 and HP MSA1000
Hello
I'm trying to set up a path of multi round robin on the FC san to access the 1 test data store.
Our FC network is 4 GB. The ESXi server have 2 HBA must provide ~2*4Gb/s path of Round Robin selection.
But there aren't any.
By default, the configuration was MRU and one path marked as 'Active i/o' and another 'Active'.
Change to round robin, reboot, changed the limit of operation I/O 1, nothing has worked. I see in the performance graph, that a path is never used.
See the screenshots and the results of the following command.
Any ideas?

Hello
Right, in the creation of 10 X 100 GB LUN then extenting considers them together is certainly NOT a recommended option. Lets take your scenario of 2 virtual machines with 100 GB VMDK, Yes this would spread the work of two controllers, but why bother. Simply create two LUNS to 100 GB with controllers of different managers, and you have reached the same goal end, more removed the complexity and potential problems in the future.
With extents, the metadata is stored on the first measure, and so when he changes (snapshot, VMDK growth, turn on/off VMs, etc.) then all of the LUNS that make up this data store get "locked". If you have something that does this too in the first measurement, then you will take on the complete data store.
Other things to think about with extents: If you lose a LUN (one of the scopes), then you lose the entire data store. Damaged metadata will take on the entire data store (all the LUNS that compose). Let's say you must remove a scope, you must destroy the whole extent, etc.. Personally, it is more flexible and easier to manage individual data warehouses, that is if you have the unit number logic that is no longer used (IOs) then you can move the virtual machines assigned to another data store.
No, I'm not saying that EVA is not able to use two controllers, just that it is not designed to have two controllers maintenance the same LUN (vDisk). Regarding the EVA, you configure the same, i.e. each LUN is assigned to another controller management and so you are balancing the full workload through both of them.
If you want a unit number logic to use all possible paths (i.e. two controllers) then you need to use Round Robin and configure it to use the non optimized paths. If your unit number logic is mainly written so you can get some benefits from that cache is reflected across both controllers, i.e. any controller made writing as well get it. However, you take a penalty (overhead) for all readings in this configuration as a request for a read on the non management controller is transmitted to the management controller. Since the vm workloads are normally random (ours is 50: 50 read/write) the gains you make on the Scriptures will be lost on read and actually exceed the delivery, i.e. latency increased, controllers overloaded, etc..
Kind regards.
