Safari lock up my iMac

Apparently at random times, when you use Safari, my computer crashes upward. I'll use the mouse to scroll a page and suddenly everything freezes: the mouse still moves the cursor autour, but I can't click anything and the keyboard is turned off - I can't quit Safari and I can't use cmd - tab to switch to another application. All I can do is to use the power button to turn off the computer and restart.

This has happened sometimes for a few months, with older versions of Mac OS X. It seems to happen more frequently - twice today already. Thoughts?

The problem with Safari started, at first, when I try to scroll forward one page had fully loaded.  Experimenting with it, I wait until a page was loaded, and then scroll down.  Early on, no problem.  However, over time, the problem worsened.  System would begin behind closed doors.  Sometimes, if I noticed a slowdown in performance, I would move the mouse back and forth as fast as I could.  Could be a coincidence, but this does not prevent the camera.  However, subsequently there and a power down was necessary.

Due to the age of my system, I was wondering if it would be a hardware problem.  Before taking this step, I thought I would try Firefox.  Not only the pages load more quickly, at the approximate rate which is used to make Safari, there is no detention.  (Note, however, there are 'crashes', from time to time, even if they do not prevent me to continue to use Firefox without taking certain measures, including closing and re-opening).

For a few weeks, I have variously reset NVRAM, reset the SMC and double checked that my software is up to date.  I got SOPHOS on the system.  However, it has been uninstalled.  More recently, I did a Combo update of OS X El Capitan 10.11.4.  My solution for the current time is mainly use Firefox.

  • How to stop Safari diversion on my imac

I get diverted into Safari in El Capitan on my iMac.  I'm getting diverted to tabs for Mackeeper, Mac Reimage, Internetcarguide and a few others.  I deleted the history of the site, deleted the Safari web caches, disabled the extensions and plugins and completed the following. The effects were zero.

Delete the file of configuration of Safari:

    1. Open the Go menu in the OS X Finder
    2. Hold the Option key and choose the library option that appears
    3. Move the folder "Safari" here on your desktop

    Remove the Safari window state:

    1. Open the library > folder state saved application
    2. Find the folder "com.apple.Safari.savedState".
    3. Move this file to the trash

    Remove the Safari application caches:

    1. Open the library > Caches folder
    2. Find all files starting with "com.apple.Safari".
    3. Move these files to the trash.

    Delete Safari Cookies configurations:

    1. Open the library > Cookies folder
    2. Delete the file called "com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.binarycookies".

    Delete the preferences of Safari:

    1. Open the library > Preferences folder
    2. Delete all files starting with "com.apple.Safari".

    Remove the user plug-ins:

    1. Go to library > Internet Plug-Ins folder
    2. Move all items in this folder on your desktop (or elsewhere)

    Remove the global plugins:

    1. Go to Macintosh HD > library > Internet plug-ins folder
    2. Out all items in this folder, except the following plug-ins:
    Default Browser.plugin iPhotoPhotocast.plugin Quartz Composer.webplugin QuickTime Plugin.plugin

They may also be removed to test your situation, but it should be replaced. In addition, if deleting plugins doesn't show any difference in behavior of your browser, then replace them. However, you can also replace the by downloading the latest versions of Web sites of their developers.

    What can I do else?

Also, continuing on my previous post - I have installed free Bitminder, Bitminder Antivirus for Mac and ClamXav, run them all through all directories and the behavior remains after having been declared clean.

  • Safari stops everything requires hard restart

Safari on late 2009 iMac after works very well for some time, unexpectedly brings all of a sudden stop. The cursor moves, but clicking on does nothing. Keyboard does not work so force quitting is not accessible. Ideas?

    Hi Robert,.

Thank you for using communities Support from Apple. Sorry to hear that you are having these problems with your iMac. I'm a little unclear on the exact nature of the issue you describe (how many times it happens, if there is some kind of trigger, etc.), but if the freezing of the whole system seems to be linked to Safari, you can try to reproduce the problem under a test user to see if it happens again. You can find information and troubleshooting procedures described in the following article useful:

You can also see if what you are experiencing is a question of depletion of resources (memory/RAM pressure, high utilization of the processor, available disk space, etc.). If so, then this article can also be useful:

  • Safari not allowing not the mouse clicks to sign up inside my Weebly Site Builder software

I'm under El Capitan 10.11.2 and safari 9.0.2 on an iMac running 3.5 Ghz Intel core i7 with 24 GB of RAM and using FatCow as my maintenance/Web site host provider and the Weebly Build slide-in my web site software.  All had worked for several months, all of a sudden (yesterday), when I accessed Weebly and try to download a file or an image to one of my Web pages, by clicking on "UPLOAD A FILE" is no more the mouse works.  When I enter the site with one browser other than Safari, everything works.  I then pulled to the top of my Macbook Air under the same OS X 10.11.2 with Safari 9.0.2 entered the web site, pulled up to Weebly and everything works perfectly.  In short, my web site UPLOAD a FILE update issue must be Safari on my i7 iMac.  I tried the cold boots without result.  I would like to remove and reload Safari, because I fear that something is damaged, but am unsure as to how to proceed.  Launch time Machine, I don't know if this is a solution.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

In your Safari menu bar, click Safari > Preferences , and then select the Privacy tab.

Click on: data to remove any Web site

Quit and then restart Safari to test.

  • AAAAAs instead of text in the latest version of Safari

I get chains AAA surrounded by boxes instead of text in my browser - mainly in the ads and videos that use Flash.  I use the latest version of Safari on my model iMac 2013 27 with OS Mavericks (last update installed) and the latest version of Flash (all this starting from 14/11/14). Anyone else have this problem, and if yes have you been able to solve the problem?  I talked to Apple, who, as always, they spent a lot of time trying to find a solution, but nothing is. After spending a lot of time with a very friendly and knowledgeable advise, they suggested to contact Adobe, and if they do not have a solution, they (Apple) gladly would continue to work on this issue with me.

I have no doubt that his is a Flash related problem! Thank you!

Yosemite now installed, I checked on the URL I sent you earlier and no. AAAAAAAs. So far. I hope that this upgrade cleaned some mess caused the problem, but I will not completely convinced until I used some time.  Once again, thank you for all your help with this problem! You're my good Samaritan of the month!

  • Problems after upgrade to Sierra.

After the upgrade to Sierra I have questions. App & external drives are locked after the iMac is off mode 'sleep'. Unable to perform even normal shutdown. After you have reinstalled the operating system, again always get the same result. Updated from El Capitan. My iMac is a 5K, 27-inch retina, end of 2015 with hard drive internal 2 TB & Intel Core I5 3.3 GHz processor.

I had similar problems in the opposite direction. My iMac 27-inch would freeze requiring power and on almost every day, and waking up from his sleep was problematic. Apple tips to the identification of the problem was not practical. Updated for Sierra and the process (forgot why) I've unchecked hard drive put to sleep when Possible in energy-saving and leave ticked avoid computer to sleep when the screen blanks. The combination of the hard drive part uncheck to sleep and Sierra gave me four of frost free days (my record is new so do not even celebrate) but waking up is no longer a problem. Might as well try and see how it works.
