  My roommates son asked me to help him to be on the internet, which I did, ran unusually slow in doing so, I noticed it when I checked, I found that the notebook had three solutions of different software protection, antivirus, Norton, McAffrey and AVG 2011 version for free. Also I noticed he had some solutions that provided a diagnosis, list of problems found and wanted to pay for the product before they would allow acccess to the fix. I uninstalled Norton and the McAffrey and improved the AVG free version of 2012. I also uninstalled the pesky diagnosis/buy me for the correction and the ask.com toolbar software. I installed ccleaner from piriform as well. The laptop seems to run a little faster, but the next morning he projected blue and when I tried to start it in safe mode it not loaded so far and then frozen, always in the same spot something AVGi and then it crashes, it will not load the rest of the necessary drivers. I tried to boot to the last known good as well. I even tried to downgrade to Windows xp home edition sp3 and when I do it it says there is no hard drive detected, and do I have to make sure that it works correctly.  I am at a loss, my sons friends bought the laptop (Acer Aspire 5315) for $50.00 and did not get a recovery disk so that the option does not exist or the other. What can I do to solve this problem.   You can also run the power cord with the battery installed.

  Sometimes the battery is so bad that you have to remove and the laptop will not work with the battery removed and plugged power cord.

I have W7 SP1 Essentials, automatic update & use your common sense when you surf, which is obviously not enough. I hate to be enslaved to an annual fee for the usual anti-malware software, such as Norton or Kaspersky.
  I read that Essentials does not play well with others, but I need something (preferably free!) "Malawarebytes" proved to be still useful in the past. It would be a conflict w/Essentials? If so, is there something else out there that would give me a little more thick defense?

  Hard drives come with a large number of spare sectors 'invisible' - it's only when they all well used by repair mechanisms built-in to the reader that the number of bad sectors Windows begins to increase from zero (in your case, it is a sector) means that there is already a significant degradation of the drive, and you can expect the count to start sooner or later back.

  I had a few problems with some applications for these past few weeks, they will start only when I'm in Mode safe. It's always the same applications, which include Spotify, Atom.io and website via Safari maps.google.com. I suppose that there is something that share these apps that don't deprive them start when I start my MacBook in normal mode.

  -Reinstalled El Capitan, to the latest version

  -HDD completely wiped and reinstalled El Capitan

  -Delivered PRAM reset

  -SMC awarded zero

  1. the present proceedings is a diagnostic test. It doesn't change anything for the better or worse and therefore, by itself, will not solve the problem. But with the help of the results of the tests, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

  The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later versions. I do not recommend running it on older versions of Mac OS X. It will do no harm, but it will not do not much good.

  Do not be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You make the tasks more complicated with the computer all the time.

  2. If you do not already have a current backup, please back up all the data before doing anything else. The backup is needed on the general principle, not because of what anyone in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you encounter any kind of problems with the computer, you can be more than the usual loss of data, if you follow these instructions or risk not.

  There are ways to back up a computer that is not fully functional. Ask if you need advice.

  3 here is instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it doesn't change anything. It does not send or receive data over the network. There is no to generate a report on the State of the computer human readable. This report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents for me or someone else.

  You should ask yourself if you can believe me, and if it is safe to run a program at the request of a foreign national. In general, no, he's not sure, and I encourage it.

  11. the test may take a few minutes to run, depending on the number of files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that is abnormally slow may take more time to run the test. During execution, a series of lines is displayed in the Terminal window like this:

      Test started

          Part 1 of 4 done at: … sec        …        Part 4 of 4 done at: … sec

      The test results are on the Clipboard.

      Please close this window.

  The intervals between the parties will not be exactly the same, but they give an approximate indication of progress.

  Wait for the final message "Please close this window" appears. If you don't see it in about 15 minutes, the test probably won't be all within a reasonable time. In this case, press the Ctrl + C key combination or the point command to stop it. Then go to the next step. You will have incomplete results, but still something. If you close the window of the Terminal, while the test is still running, the partial results will not be saved and you have to start over.

  12. when the test is finished, or if you have stopped it because it was taking too long, leaving the Terminal. The results have been saved to the Clipboard automatically. They do not appear in the Terminal window. Please do not copy from there. All you have to do is start a response to this comment and then paste it again by pressing Command-V.

• iMac spinning Rainbow wheel appears each time I click on something and running extremely slow

  My iMac (27 inch, mid 2011) is gel/loading every time I click on something. This occurs on the simplest tasks such as the opening of the finder window, open system preferences, right-click on desktop etc.

  It happened all of a sudden a few days ago and I have not updated recently... I noticed this occurring has started after I opened the Photos Agent app for the first time and imported more than 1000 images/videos of my iPhone6. Could this be the cause of the problem?

  Memory is 4 GB and it has worked very well so far. I checked disk utility and you have no error. Activity monitor looks great too.

  Most important - looking the best way to backup or clone the HDD that I have a very important job out there. What is the best way to do it? I have a Macbook Pro, as well as with 100 GB free on it. Can I use it to help somehow?

• USB works in XP safe mode but not in "normal" mode.

  Something has trashed my usb connection because none of them work.  They worked a few days ago, but not now.  The USB ports work fine in XP safe mode, but I can't make them work under XP 'normal '.

  I tried system restore to restore to when I know they worked (Saturday).  But the restoration said it cannot restore at this time there.  I drive four other date back (Thu, Fri, Thur, sea) and it woul don't restore of any of them.

  I went to the HP web page for this computer.  They have no USB drivers, so I download the chipset and installed driver.  It does not work.

  I tried to uninstall USB devices by using Device Manager.  Devide manager uninstalled, then I rebooted the machine and it reloaded automatically usb drivers.  But I can not use devices.

  I tried Device Manager-> select your hardware-> right click-> properties-> tab driver-> update driver-> online search for the driver.

  I tried to uninstall in safe mode, run usb.inf and then re-startup - which did not work.

  I am current internet search for USB drivers for this computer.  But I still found nothing.

  Anyone know where I can find USB drivers for the HP Pavilion a1515n or should I be looking for on google.  Currently, I'm looking Drivers USB a1514n.

  I would like to reinstall the USB drives, but I can't find them.  Or some otherway to get USB devices working again.

  All,

  I got it to work!

  I have not updated the driver for the USB hub.   However, I finally tried to update the driver for the USB EHCI controller.  Once I updated the driver for it, all the USB ports and the connected devices are recognized.

  Life is good again.   It took me 5 hours to understand that I had to update a different device driver, but hey - at least it works!

• The installation of Service Pack 3 for XP, I get an internal error that smss.exe is running and close all other applications. All applications are closed. Anyone else seen this error?

  Is it safe to run an online scan to see if the smss.exe is a virus?  or do I remove smss.exe?  or is there a workaround?

  I think that a 'wipe & reload"would be the most effective way to restore your computer to a fully functional State and without infection, Smitz.

  On the Admin Panel when I want to close I normally press start and the "closing". However the button turn off disappeared and only shows button "quit". In addition the 'run' button is gone as well. How to restore it back to normal?

  It will help with these situations... and, this lesson, I've added a few new commands to my answer of registry file generic copy/paste for these kinds of things:

  If you see things like this:

  You do not have sufficient security privileges to restore your system.
  The System Restore tab is missing from the my computer properties.
  System Restore has been disabled by group policy.  To turn on system restore, contact your domain administrator.
  The System Restore tab is available, but the turn off System Restore (disabled by Group Policy) box is grayed out.
  The task manager has been disabled by your system administrator.
  The registry editor has been disabled by your system administrator.
  The task manager has been disabled by group policy.
  The registry editor has been disabled by group policy.
  The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator.  Press a key to continue...

  The usual advice are something in the sense of "something has been disabled in the group policy...". ", and it is probably true that something has been disabled, but you know what something is and what it takes to do about it.

  If you are using XP Home Edition, you will get away with advice to use the Group Policy Editor, because there is no Group Policy Editor in XP Home and that really doesn't tell you where to look in group policy, even if you run the Group Policy Editor.

  You need a complete solution that works for all versions of XP and requires no hunting around in the Group Policy Editor or registry to find where things are that have been disabled.

  Unless you have disabled these things on purpose, chances are good that your system has a malware infection.  The malware knows what tools you use to try to find and remove, for the malware disables the things you are more likely to consume and prevents them from running if you can't find the malware and remove it.

  If your system has this kind of affliction, all malicious software tools you currently use or have used failed to protect your system so that you can expand your horizons malware detection and prevention to prevent these kinds of afflictions in the first place.

  The malware will be happy you trick into thinking that you need to so something drastic to fix your system - as a facility repair, system restore point or a total reinstallation of XP.  This is what it would be like you, but these measures are not necessary.

  You must solve the immediate problem of the tools does not, then scan your system for malware when you are finished.

  No matter what kind of malware you've used analytical tools, they are unlikely to solve this problem, because they cannot tell if the changes made to your system have been on purpose (you or an administrator who makes them) or some malware changed them, so the analysis tools will let these things alone (it's usually a good thing).

  If your system is afflicted in this way, there are probably other things that also do not work - like the registry editor, System Restore and the command prompt, so fix them all at once even if you have not discovered they are broken again.

  These commands from registry removes the registry entries that are stop opening programs.  Although the registry entries do not exist, these commands are safe to run and will work for all versions of XP.

  Before making any changes to your registry, back up the registry with this free and popular tool:

  Click Start, run and enter in the box:

  Save the new text file with extension .reg on your desktop or somewhere you can remember with a name you can remember, something like:

  enableit.reg

  After you save the file, close Notepad.

  Locate the file enableit.reg on your desktop and double-click it.

  Alternatively, you can right-click on the enableit.reg file, choose open with... and select the registry editor.

  Answer in the affirmative to the question... Are you sure you want to add the information in the registry?

  You should then see a message that information has been registered in the register.

  Reboot your system and test.

  You can delete the enableit.reg file when you are finished.

  If the registry editor has also been disabled, we first fix (not a problem).

  Hi guys, I have Windows XP, I bought a Gabriel Knight game, that has the command D:\Sierra\GKCD to play, is this BACK? I've never done this before, is it safe to run it?  If it is safe to run and how to return to my XP running the system? Is it something stupid to do, or is - this usual?
