Satellite U200 163: BIOS download 3.40-> XP-Linux BIOS bug resolved

I was told there was no bug with 3.30, but these are the changes (extract from Toshiba U.S. web site):

* Added CPU support: optimized the thermostat during low temperature operations.
* This BIOS supports the Windows XP and Vista.

It was not the case before?

Found on the Toshiba site we (that, I tell you once again, gives more information on changes in bios):

http://www.CSD.Toshiba.com/cgi-bin/TAIS/Su/su_sc_dtlView.jsp?soID=419258&MOID=1277449&BV_Sess ionID=@@@1274207095.1171787409@@@&BV_EngineID=cc ciaddkejmhedecgfkceghdgngdgmm.0 & ct = SB

3.30 bug maybe wasn't lack of Linux? ;-)

    Hi ft

Unfortunately I have no explanation for what is happening exactly to your device, but don t forget that your device is not supported under Linux and also designed for Windows XP.

Satellite U200 is more recent and it is possible that in a month next someone will do some Linux experience on this unit and reported it here.

  • 3.30 BIOS bug with Linux on Satellite U200 163

    Good evening

3.30 BIOS does not work properly on my U200 163 (dual boot using Grub).
(all that has been done on XP Toshiba EU site, with the correct procedures).

Sometimes the "Toshiba" splash image does not appear, and the image has a hard time (Please note that the arrows to choose the boot option are not available in this case...).
(Note that this point is independent of the operating system...)
Sometimes, Grub does not appear (but a start of the first line of the menu).
My shortcut keys do not work on Kubuntu (they do on the version 1.50).

I finally go back to version 1.50, which works perfectly with the boot image, Grub, Ubuntu or XP.

Please note that the changelog information data on Toshiba U.S. and none EU from Toshiba... Why? (not even a link!)
It would be useful for me to see that I don't have the 3.30 anyway?

    Ford Hi

As you probably know the BIOS updates are not specifically designed for the Grub, Ubuntu or any other Linux.

In the first stage, the update of the BIOS has been designed with Microsoft OS and it s compatible with Vista and other products Ms.
Of course, its a shame that the different distribution of Linux only does not work correctly with the version 3.30 but to my knowledge, Toshiba does not support Linux distributions and you will get no guarantee that any Linux will work fine.

As you know most of the people want to install and use the Vista and the Microsoft OS and Linux No. So it of your choice to use Linux but in this case you should not use Bios 3.3.

    Greetings

PS: If it please follow Forum guidelines and do not start different threads on the same topic!

Update: BIOS 3.4 have also solved the bug of Linux

  • Its on a Satellite U200 163 Vista problems

    Hello everyone,

I try to install Vista Home Basic on my U200 163, but I am facing many problems and really need help...

My biggest problem is that, after the upgrade, I have no sound on my computer. I installed the latest drivers from toshiba (toshiba American site vista drivers), my chipset is recognized as "Soundmax Integrated Digital HD Audio" and everything seems to be allright, but my speakers as well as my jack cards give no sound. Everything was ok under XP and my sound settings are ok, I even see the volume changes in the sound settings, I've never seen such a problem before... Did someone had an idea?

Moreover, I didn't find the drivers for sensor HDD and several applications of toshiba important as protector of HDD, energy-saving, indicator of volume, hotkey utility cannot be run...

I hope someone can help, thank you very much.

    Hello

I don t think you need to update the firmware.
I recommend using a compatible support and supported!

In the user manual, you will find a list of supported CD and DVD!

Also try to burn the CD or DVD with extra like Nero burning software.
Nero supports an option to test the drive. He learned the best speed and control the burning procedure to get performance better combustion.

  • Change the Wifi card in the Satellite U200 163

    Hello

Is it possible to change the wifi card internal of my computer toshiba laptop u200-163, I can change the hard disk?

    Thank you.

If you use the compatible WiFi card I see no problem, but in my opinion, there is no reason for this. I guess your laptop comes with WLAN card 802.11a/b/g and using the g standard data transfer is fast enough and you avoid any problems if you use your laptop for work.

  • Satellite U200 163 and Linux - sound disappeared

    Hi all

I just installed ubuntu 9.04 on my u200, it worked very well with the live CD with almost any linux, but the sound no longer works after a while
I think the problem is with the bios or could be fixed with windows settings
Unfortunately, I deleted windows so now I have to find another solution
I am sure that this is not a software problem, but more tied to the bios or strange sound equipment.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi pierrot2027,

of course, it is the bios... It is evolving without interaction...
    I'm kidding!

which leads to believe that the bios is defective when:
-its has been authorized for a period of time
-you do not change anything inside the bios or hardware

try to modprobe a new soundmodule, perhaps some stock loading a bad module...
    or reinstall the system...

BTW: windows is an operating system like linux - if it's a hardware failure, you are not able to fix in any os at all.

    Hello

As much as I know there is no RAM Bay at the bottom of the unit and it is so just only one possible place to the RAM slots
Slots seem to be hidden under the keyboard.

In order to get access to the RAM, you will need to remove the keyboard.
Usually, it is not very difficult but if you have no experience with this dismantling then you should ask a technician for assistance.

    But here's a few details;
Keyboard is fixed with 2 screws. They are hidden under the cover of thin plastic under the line of F1 to F12 key.
Remove the plastic cover, remove the screws, then you could remove the keyboard take note; the keyboard is connected to the motherboard with the flat cable.

  • Upgrade Vista on the Satellite U200-126

I would like to tell my experience with the updated BIOS with my Satellite PRO U200-126.
I bought this computer last year, this is a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo processor. It has been working perfectly with Windows XP Professional.
All my problems began when I tried to upgrade to Windows Vista.

I bought an upgrade of RAM, because my computer has only 512 MB. I removed the keyboard and installed the additional memory module... It is ok. I bought a new SATA hard drive 160 GB, to install the new operating system on it. I bought Win Vista DVD. I downloaded all compatible applications and drivers from the TOSHIBA web site. I put the upgrade, so I started.

The first step was to upgrade the BIOS. My U200 had BIOS version 1.40 installed, and I flashed the computer with version 3.40 available in time on the Web from Toshiba website. I installed the new hard drive and started a new installation of Windows Vista.

The installation went smoothly. I upgraded to Vista with the patches required to MS and installed all Toshiba drivers and applications in the recommended order.
It was weird that the Toshiba web site had the drivers for Atheros WLAN card, while the U200 uses the Intel 3945ABG. I skipped installing these drivers. Today, I see that they have been removed from the web site. Good shot, indeed, Toshiba.

The first thing that I noticed that the ConfigFree and Intel Proset application have been crippled, if compared to those that are available on Windows XP. The ConfigFree Radar, for example, showed that the WiFi network name, not the single Access Points. Intel Proset was not showing the name of Access Points. It's ok - when a WiFi network has only one access point, but the majority of WiFi networks has several access points...

I learned that it is because Windows Vista manages directly, roaming access points while under XP, this operation has been completed the network adapter and its driver.
Since all software WiFi for XP (Netstubler's) work doesn t under Vista, the only way I was able to locate access points was by typing a command netsh prompt.
In my view, that Toshiba should redouble their efforts on their new software WiFi for Vista.

I was also confronted with other issues, but those issues Vista and not Toshiba. I want to only quote the new Vista network discovery protocol, the NTLM 2, which is incompatible with existing network resources like XP - 2 K based computers and Linux - NAS function. Editing the registry shown on MS Technet for that matter, t has failed. If all goes well, a MS Service Pack, in the future, may solve this problem of backward compatibility.

I also noticed that the Toshiba power management utility had become a subset of Vista power management, it was more than the very neat screen that I liked a lot. In addition, the default value of mapped Windows Vista power button suspends - and not offshore.

Next - I noted that the Fn buttons didn't work unless Toshiba Flash Cards have been loaded and activated. I didn t like Flash cards, because they use a huge 50 MB of RAM. This problem has been resolved with a different BIOS upgrade to version 3.50, I found on the Web from Toshiba site.

Then I started to use the computer. I loved the Aero Interface and the robustness of Vista. I had to disable user account control, since then has been a little too much security, at least for me.
Then using the computer on battery power, closed the lid, and computer is spent in standby mode. Later, I opened the lid and started working again.
Here, I realized something was wrong. To make a long story short:
    1. after suspend and resume, the computer will turn off more.
    2. after him suspend and resume, battery life has been reduced.

It didn't take much to realize it was a BIOS problem. I did a clean reinstall of Vista and the problem remained. I had to physically turn off the computer with the hardware button, because it does not turn off when asked so, but only after an interruption.

At this point, I put in the old hard drive with Windows XP. The computer started fine, any recognition of the fingerprint was extinguished.
BIOS upgrades kill association of OS fingerprints, even if doesn't erase the fingerprints of the probe, information stored fingerprints are no longer usable which is from a pint of view security.
Then, I closed the lid of the computer, and he went to suspend. In XP, the computer with BIOS version 3.50 would not again. It would be rather reset and Windows XP was perform a restart of the recovery thereafter. The Bluetooth radio has been messed up on every reboot.

At this point, my U200 was not usable on Vista and XP. Toshiba Europe web site doesn't allow you to download of old BIOS, neither Toshiba offers a utility to save the old BIOS before flashing a new. I was ready to send to the home computer.

Fortunately enough, I found BIOS version 1.40 on the Toshiba US website. It was not exactly the same as I had before because it showed a generic start-up Logo Intel, while my original BIOS showed the Centrino Duo logo. The version and date were OK, and I flashed the BIOS on my computer. He went everything is OK

With BIOS version 1.40, Windows XP worked perfectly as before. Under Vista, the computer turning off after an interruption / resumption.
The Fn buttons work properly even with loaded flash cards with BIOS version 1.40 under Vista, the brightness of the screen was not controllable - even from the utility to save energy.

At this point, I left 1.40 BIOS and XP on my computer. I'll wait for Toshiba release a compatible BIOS back and the MS to release a Service Pack or a hotfix for the problem network.

At the end of the story, I would like to add a few comments.
I saw the sale the new U200 with Windows Vista preinstalled Toshiba. The new U200 has a Core 2 Duo processor, so I guess that the motherboard will be somewhat up-to-date.
I put t have a new U200, but I think that this new version doesn t suffer from the issue of suspension-recovery.
If anyone from Toshiba is reading this post, I would like to be sent by electronic mail to the original version of 1.40 BIOS that was installed at the factory on my machine, I mean the BIOS showing the Centrino Duo logo colorful start. My email is: antonio.maglione15 (at) libero (dot) it
Also, I ask Toshiba for check the BIOS version 3.50 on an older U200 with processor Core Duo and provide to the public a compatible version back from the BIOS.

    Kind regards

    Antonio
    ROME (Italy)

    Dear Antonio

Thanks for you long interesting history.
As you probably know not this forum is just a user-forum user and I'm afraid that you won't find anyone from Toshiba here m.
Anyway, as you said on the Toshiba page you will find only the latest version of the BIOS and the older versions are not available. This real s. Several months ago, I tried an older version of BIOS for my laptop but without to succeed.
A hint; The authorized service provider may downgrade the laptop to the old version.

In any case, I guess many Vista tools and utilities that are on the market are in a first time and updates might solve some strange behaviors.
I noticed that the BIOS updates are published from time to time. Maybe the next update of the BIOS will provide some improvements.

PS; Don't download and install the BIOS from other sources. European portable computers to use the BIOS from the Web of Toshiba Europe site!

    Hello

Unfortunately these drivers are not available on the Toshiba download page, but you can consult the site of material parts manufacturer.

    BT stack, you can download under http://aps.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/ > download > Windows XP x 64 / Windows Vista x 64 > version 5.10.01

  • Satellite U200 - 181 built-in HDD ERROR

"Toshiba Satellite U200-181", I bought 2 weeks ago. Recently (2-3 days ago) I have problem with built-in HARD drive.

So the problem is that sometimes I get the "Built-in HARD drive ERROR" message when starting the laptop. This integrated "Disk ERROR" message appears from time to time and the system shuts down the HARD drive starts, but can start from other bootable devices. First time where the built-in "Disk ERROR" message took place, he was accompanied by a lot of strange pop sound beating from the inside of the laptop. All others

"HARD disk ERROR" messages were not so strong and strange beating pops, but always with some pop sounds (not as strong as the premiere).

To identify possible problems, I saved S.M.A.R.T. data log (see annex 1).

Additional information: after I bought the laptop I ve made successful update BIOS version 1.40 version 1.50 strictly according to Toshiba site official instructions. After BIOS upgrade system works well, no ERRORS, no exceptions. But 3 days ago I received the message"built-in HARD disk ERROR '."

    Any ideas? Thank you.
