Save space on the disc thin provision

Hello.

I have a virtual machine that has thin provisioned N. 3 disks:

  • 1-> provisioned size 20 GB
  • 2nd-> size 3 GB provisioned
  • 3-> provisioned size 20 GB

If I look on the use of the storage on the server ESXi 5 (VI client) I see this:

Provisioned.png

But if I connect on the virtual computer, I see this:

VM.png

With a simple calculation, I don't see that really used on the virtual machine storage size is only (20 - 8,64) + (3-0, 746) + (20 - 5,46) = 28,15 GB.

Very different 40,48 GB storage used .

The question is:

is it possible to reclaim unused storage space?

In other words: is it possible to align the "storage used" showed on the resources of the ESXi server to that actually used from the VM?

Thanks in advance.

You can use vmkfstools with the option ofpunchzero to recover the disk space of the thin configured virtual disks. To do this, you must first set to zero unused space within the OS itself invited, then turn off the virtual machine and run the vmkfstools command.

    Hello

118MBs is a minimal amount of space on a hard drive and even if deleted will make no difference to your disk space issue.

  • compress the blob column to save space on the server

    Hi friends,

I have a problem with the blob column, in the oracle 11.2.0.4 on aix Server database

I have a table with a blob of column (containing a jpg file). This table is in a tablespace of 300 GB and storage space is full. There is no space on the server (asm).

I need to load the jpg more in this table, but there is no space.

I've read a few articles on tha compress blob type column, but I'm not sure what I should do.

Is it possible to compress the blob column without going to a different tablespace (because the server has no more space to create a new one).

The table and column have been created in a traditional way.

    Please, advice?

    Best regards

    Dbape.

But this method requires add-on EA "Adv. Compression" ($$$).

OP he wanted to compress .jpg files.

    BUDOKAI

    It is not possible.

the .jpg files are already compressed.

IIRC (of my Compression Adv. test) - SecureFile "knows best" and will not try to compress BLOBs identified as JPGs or any other known formats of files (such as .zip files)

In other words - SecureFile is not the OP no good for the type of data, it is try to compress them.

  • Thin provisioned VMDK consume all available space

    Hello

    • Server: Win 2008 R2 with SP1 (file server)
    • Storage: VMDK on VMFS5 datastore (thin provisioned), which underlies the SAN fiber storage
    • vSphere: vCenter Server Standard 5, ESXi 5.0 Patch 2 (build 515841)

... So, I have a VM file server running Windows 2008 R2 with SP1.  The system (c) partition has been successfully thin (VMDK using 13 GB to 40 GB).

However, for all subsequent hard disks virtual created on the server, the NTFS partition is very slow to get into shape - and the actual size of the VMDK creeps slowly up to the size of the VHD (you can see the gradual rise of the VMDK size in the browser to store data during the formatting process).

The VMFS data store that we create new virtual hard disks is version 5.  All virtual machines with virtual hard disks on VMFS version 3 seem to be supplied thin OK.

Nobody knows what could happen here?

    Hello

    Do you use quick format?

Otherwise, your score will take up any space. Check here:VMware KB: using thin provisioned disks with virtual machines

"If a guest operating system needs to use a virtual disk, the must invited first operating system partition and format the drive in a file system it can recognize." Depending on the format selected in the guest operating system, the format can cause the disc thin provisioned in full size.

For example, if you have a drive end with a Microsoft Windows operating system implemented and format the drive, unless you explicitly choose to fast formatting, Microsoft Windows format tool written information to all sectors on the disk, which in turn inflates the disc thin provisioned in full size. But I think that if they are not over - commit then how are they case using the benefits of provisioning. Instead why don't they use thick available?

I agree, if there is enough disk space, thin provisioning is basically no benefit to this transfer.

How to extend my C drive volume in Windows 7, so that the disc I want to merge in drive C is not adjacent to the C drive, please help

    Jackin salvation,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers community.

When resizing of volumes in Windows7, you must be aware of the following criteria:

    • Only you have the possibility to reduce or enlarge NTFS or RAW (unformatted) partition using Windows 7 tools.
    • When you shrink a partition, files not movable as a page file or a shadow storage area are not resettled. This is why you cannot reduce the size of the Windows beyond volume where these types of files. If you need to reduce the volume, you will need to remove, move or delete the page file or the shadow first storage area, and then reduce the volume and then add the page file or shadow storage on the disk area.
    • If enough bad clusters are found on the disk partition will not shrink.
    • You must be logged on to an administrator account in order to resize Windows Volumes in windows 7.

Windows 7 Partitions or Volumes of shrinkage

This section shows must shrink a Windows volume or partition. To do this, we must open the Windows 7 disk management tool. The following steps will guide you in this process.

    1. Click the button on the Start Menu in the bottom left of your desktop , and then click the Control Panel menu option.

    2. When Control Panel opens, click on system and Maintenance category.

    3. When opens in system and Maintenance category, scroll down and click on Administrative Tools.

    4. Double-click the computer management icon. The console of the computer management will now open. Down, you will see a category called storage and under this category will be the disk management icon, as shown below.

    5. Click on the disk management icon, and you will now be in the disk management utility as shown in the figure below. This utility you can see all the partitions on your computer and format, delete, create, develop or resize them. For this tutorial, I'm going to resize the partition E: of 16 GB so that when completed, there is a 8 GB partition and provides another 8 GB of free space I can use for other purposes.

    6. To shrink the partition, just click with the right button on the partition that you want to work with and select reduce . In this example, I click right on the E: partition and in the menu that appears, I select shrink.

    7. A screen similar to the one below appears. This screen indicates the size of the current partition you, how you can reduce it to a field where you can enter a specific amount to reduce, and then how big partition will be once it shrinks. By windows 7 default enters the maximum amount that you can reduce the volume, but if you want to change this amount, do so by entering the amount in MB in the enter the amount of space to shrink in MB: field. When you are satisfied with how windows 7 will shrink the partition, click the minimize button.

    8. Once windows 7 is complete decreases the volume, you will be in the disk management screen, but now the partition size will be the size you requested as shown below.

Now that you have reduced the size of your volume of Windows, you can close the computer management console.

You have now finished reducing your score and you have the extra space available for use as required.

Windows 7 Partitions or Volumes extension

This section shows that you must extend a Windows volume. To do this, we must open the tool of disk management where we can resize our volumes. The following steps will guide you in this process.

    1. Click the button on the Start Menu in the bottom left of your desktop, and then click the Control Panel menu option.

    2. When Control Panel opens, click on system and Maintenance category.

    3. When opens in system and Maintenance category, scroll down and click on Administrative Tools.

    4. Double-click the computer management icon. The computer management console will now open. Down, you will see a category called storage and under this category will be the disk management icon, as shown below.

    5. Click on the disk management icon, and you will now be in the disk management utility as shown in the figure below. This utility you can see all the partitions on your computer and format, delete, create, develop or resize them. For this tutorial, I'll extend the E: partition so that it uses the rest of the available space on the disc 1.

    6. To extend the partition, he just click right-click on the partition that you want to work with, and then select the Extend option. In this example, I click right on the E: partition and in the menu that appears, select Extend.

    7. A wizard appears as shown below. Press the Next button to continue.

    8. A new screen, shown below, is displayed allowing you to select the free space available on your local hard disks that you can use to extend the space of the selected partition. It is important to note that Windows 7 allows you to extend a volume using free space on the same drive as well as the other disks. I strongly suggest that you do not extend a volume on a disk with free space of the other. It is because if one of the disks has a hardware failure, then all data on this volume will be removed. Rather just to use the free space on a drive that contains the volume you extend
      .

As discussed in step 5, for this tutorial we are going to extend my 8 GB partition (drive E :) to the total size of disk 1 using all the available space. As disk 1 is only available free space on my computer, windows 7 automatically select as shown in the image above and use the maximum amount available to extend the partition. If there were other drives with free space that they have shown during the selection available . If you want to extend the volume to a lower amount you can change in the Select the amount of space in MB: field. In the contrary case, press us the button Next .

    9. You will be now be presented with a confirmation screen. If you are sure you want to extend the volume, press the Finish button. Otherwise, press the back button to make changes or the Cancel button to cancel this operation.

    10. Once Windows 7 completed to extend the volume, you will be on the screen disk management, where you can see the amount that you have extended with the new size. An example of this is shown below.

At this point, you can close the Management window of the computer that your task is completed.

    Hope this information is useful.

Let me know if it worked.

Please see this article: VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning

  • ESXI 5.1 "the disc is not thin-provisioned" after copying to the new data store vmdk

I wanted to create an external backup as a 2nd VM ready-to-run on the 2nd data store.

I've removed all snapshots, stop the machine virtual and exported the OVF file to a computer, adjusted to the size of the original virtual machine starts in Gparted to update the partition and restart. All very well.

I then tried to deploy the OVF in the data store alternative (235GB slim, thickness according to the deployment of 250 Wizard). I tried both thick and thin but the error message "cannot deploy the OVF. The operation was cancelled by the user.

I then manually downloaded the VMDK & OVF file to the 2nd data store and tried to inflate but then received the message "a specified parameter was not correct. The disc isn't thin provisioned. ».

It seems I have dealing with the same thing, as this is the document here (http://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/vsphere/55/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u3-release-notes.html).  However, I have no idea what to do now... and I'm worried because it seems that my backup plan may not work if I can't restore an OVF/VMDK from a disk of visas.

The solution to the first problem here: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2172950#2172950 that solved my problem 2nd too.

  • VM with Thin Provisioning, but increase not the size of the installation disc.

I'm working on a test VM for Windows XP installation.  I've implemented initially for 8 GB and with a provisioning.  However, now I am more space because of all the updates and adverse Microsoft threw there.  I cleaned the drive as much as I can and am still really low on disk space.  New updates will not download or install.  I increased the size of the disk of 10 GB, but in Windows, it still shows 8 GB.  What gives?  What Miss me?

When you have added on the hard drive, you have added the space at the end of the training. You need to resize the partition on this computer to use all the new space. There are many options to resize the partition. A program that I use which is great and can run from a live cd is called GParted- http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ . One thing that I found which help before using GParted is to run chkdsk and make sure that there are no errors before resizing the disc.

  • Need help on the notion of provisioning thin

    Hi all

I'm quite new to virtualization and I'm interested in thin provisioning practice, but there is something that I can't!

Let's say I have a drive slim 100 GB with 25 GB of data on it. If I explore from the vSphere Client data store, it tell me that the actual size of the VMDK file is 25 GB and that the allocated space is 100 GB... But when I connect in ESXi with SSH console and explore the data store, I see the VMDK file as in fact already 100 GB in size. More, when I use software as a Standalone Converter VM or VM Explorer to move / backup VM, such software have to manage (much slower than the really necessary 25 GB) 100 GB file.

So, maybe there is something I don't get, but is the size of only 'thin' file for vSphere? I didn't need to allocate space for the data store, too what I wanted with a provisioning was a lighter file to manage when manipulate and save VM. I'm wrong about the concept?

Thank you very much for helping me

Provisioning is a file system feature, like sizing sparse in Linux. When you check the size of the command line, we for example ls lisa that - in addition to the provisioned size - displays the number of blocks used. When you copy a thin provisioned file to a destination (or tool) which does not support thin provisioning files will be extended to their full-size provisioned.

  • a way to reclaim the space freed up in thin configured drives?

I read somewhere that with vsphere 5, there is a way to free space of a thin provisioned vmdk reclain. I wish I could remember when I saw him, but I don't know that I saw on the site web vmwares. I think it had something to do with the execution of a command of the vma, but the guest operating system must have vmware tools installed on it. Is this true?

    Really.

We have our all configured environment with the fine disc and we have never faced such a problem.

Once I have free space that will appear in the data store like what ever is the actual free space.

Did you do a rescan on the data store.

have you tried svmotion the VM which was released upward with a space of 60 GB to 40 GB.

If you have tried everything above and still it shows the same.

    Then left with vmware converter.

    they are totally independent

You can remove without affecting the other

BUT it will save very little space because they are both pointing to the same original photos using the links hard- pictures recorded on the disc to share images with your iPhoto or libraries Aperture - Apple Support

Unless you are absolutely positive that you are finished with the iPhoto library (and unless he had three or more months I suggest you can't be done with it) it is recommended not to delete the iPhoto library - you can never remove parts - remove the library or keep it

  • Lost emails after you are prompted to compact the account to save space

    original title: Aargh! Lost emails!

I hope this is the right forum - cannot find a specific to Outlook Express, my mail server.
I was asked recently to compact my emails, to save space and did.
Apparently, I did not notice a check mark which allowed the removal of the most recent messages.
Now, I've lost all those received & sent during the last 3 months. The before and after April-May are always accessible.
So, how can I put on the recovery of the missing 3 months?
    Jump44

    1. Surprise! This is the right forum.
    2. Outlook Express is an e-mail client. Your e-mail server is where OE downloads the message of.
    3. There is no checkbox that allows the removal of e-mail.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
    http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

    Why mail disappears:
    http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone

    Recovery methods:

If you are running XP/SP3, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

    And see:

    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:
