• Complete noob to Esxi - video passthrough?

  I recently put in place a system of budget oriented enough to run Xpenology NAS is also somewhat, but before putting in place than I decided to just play around with it and try to learn new things (Linux, VM etc.).  I decided to start by Esxi and installation as a Windows 8 VM and a VM Xpenology and ideally I wanted to display the virtual Windows machine on television that the system will eventually be connected to.  Told me on another forum that to do this I need a passthrough video card but it was not clear exactly what are the hardware requirements are for this.  The processor is an Intel G3258 that supports VT - x but not VT - d and I would like to know if VT - d is a requirement for passthrough video?  I also understand that not all graphics cards are supported and that AMD cards tend to be the most compatible.  I'm also under Esxi 5.1 update 3 since it is the most updated version that is compatible with the NETWORK interface integrated on my motherboard (MSI H81I).  5.1 Esxi (free version) is compatible with video passthrough?  Are there other requirements that I have not mentioned?

  Yes you need Intel-VTd and also I'm not sure about the compatibility of your graphics card, but you need to check on the VMware Compatibility Guide portal.

  There is also no limitation on passthrough on free ESXi.

  in one of my servers, I have a pretty powerful 3d video card which is noisey and power consume. According to today in my understandinmg there no need in ESXi for this video card.

  Would you leave it where it is or just replace it with an other entry level?

• ESXi hosted VM requires more video RAM

  Hi, I have a Geforce 9500 GT on my ESXi 4.1 server. Some of the windows on the ESXi server machines require more video RAM, then the map server provides (24 MB I think) so I found a 9500 GT I had spare and added. I haven't set anything to the video card and ESXi is not sound using my server maps vga. Can I configure ESXi for my windows to use my Geforce 9500 GT, and you have a link or instructions somewhere?

  Using the latest display driver (you can download it at toshiba), then you will have the option of frame buffer memory. The initially installed driver doesn't have this option. You will be able to use the memory of 128 MB for vga. If you put your L30 512 MB, you can use 256 MB of video memory. But I found no differences in the games between 128 MB and 256 MB.

  I'm sorry but this is not possible. This laptop / motherboard does not support a dedicated graphics card. The Intel HD graphics chip is part of the Intel (Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3 - 2350M) and there is no other choice how to upgrade the graphics card. The only way is to replace the motherboard with a compatible graphics ATI or nVidia chips on it. However, the motherboard could be very expensive as spare parts. Computer laptop with shared graphics card is much cheaper that these with dedicated chips is not a good idea save money when buying because it will cost more when you upgrade.

  It is only compatible with Movie Maker... they cannot be converted.

  When you try to access a video clip that you "know" is sometimes in a
  file, but you can not see... is it because that the format of in that the video is

  Movie Maker formats...... use the conversion to WMV format would be
