Security Essentials, cohabiting with the Defender

Now that I have installed Security Essentials (it's up & running), Windows Defender will remain dormant in the background, or what I need to uninstall?

Microsoft Security Essentials has disabled Defender. It's good, not bad. Not only is there potential conflict, but there is no reason to have both; basically to have something very similar to the built-in Defender, and both running at a time will be your performance level and create the risk of problems that are contrary to the other.

You will need to nor can uninstall Defender.

    Answer has been given to you as to why MSE stops Windows Defender. In short, you don't need Windows Defender when you have MSE.

    If there is another reason why you need to activate Windows defender, please after return of reason.

  • I installed Security Essentials and it causes Defender to stop the run.

    * Original title: Security Essentials

    I installed Security Essentials and it causes Defender to stop the run. The only way I can turn the Defender needs to restore my computer to before Security Essentials. I tried twice and got the same result.

    Security Essentials replaces the Defender?

    I am running Vista.

    Thanks Len H

    You are right.  MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) in Windows XP, Vista and 7 can be used instead of Windows Defender.  They can not be activated at the same time.

  • Cannot access 'change of startup with the Defender programs stops but prove Essentials won't advocate not run

    Microsoft Security Essentials disables the Defender, but with Defender disabled I can't access certain items in such as 'Change startup programs' control panel - I get the message that the Defender is not enabled - if I try to activate Defendeer access, the freezing of the entire machine.  Defender does not appear in the list of programs - so it cannot be deleted.  (Well not really), I am surprised that Microsoft may not yet know of ocnflicts with its own software.  What is the reference for this?

    Because of the interaction between the defender and Essentials I need to completely uninstall Essesntials for program startup - enable - disable options via the control panel.  When you click the option to enable - disable the startup program that a box comes up saying Defender is turned off, and if you click on to activate it, the machine frezzes.  This is exactly the problem I want to fix it.  Your p - submit not only serve to illustrate the problem.  I have no idea why Defender is connected to the options of startup programs, but it is apparently and screw Essentials correct operation of this function.

  • Hi, can Windows Defender and Security Essentials runs at the same time?

    I noticed 2 days back that Windows Defender was not lit and then reactivated it and have updated and scanned the PC.

    Even today, I noticed it wasn't on and had to start manually.

    This phenomenon occurs because Microsoft Security Essentials is already running and did everything the Defender would have?

    You cannot have two antivirus running at the same time, they will do both your computer crash depending on what operating system you have.

    • This morning, I have updated the firmware on my SSD to activate the TRIM. I restored an image of the drive I did with Windows Backup and Restore just before updating the drive.

    Problem:

    • I tried Windows Update after update of the SSD. It downloads all updates, installs, and prompts you to restart the computer to complete the installation. During the shutdown, some files are 'configured '. Upon restart, during the boot of Windows GUI (circles of flight), there is a break-up of the code, something about the registry. On logon, it gets "35%" and says so "returning default configuration updates,' or something like that. I get a notification indicating that the updates failed.

    • Tried a Full scan with MSE. No anomaly.

    • Attempt of Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (updated dec 2010) Full Scan, no malicious software was detected. Updates still do not work.
    • Attempt of Anti-Malware analysis complete Malwarebyte, no malicious software found. Updates still do not work.

    I don't think that this is malware, but a Windows problem... My internet is wobbly for these last two days, a lot of packet loss (pages only "" half load, some missing frames, etc.). Not sure if this is related, but it downloads the updates very well. It is not always the marker "35%".

    I'm out of ideas. What's next?

    PROBLEM SOLVED

    Friday, January 14, 2011

    I have a solution. He was in two parts: firstly, PA bear in its list of the 6 stages has allowed for me to make the Windows XP security update that was my initial problem. However, then I was unable to update Microsoft Security Essentials was so without virus protection. Finally, I called the phone number of support for the product and was helped by a great person.

    The problem was that my system clock changed the date a week in the future. He also suggested that there are probably a variety of different dates used by other applications. In Safe Mode, it updated my system time and date, and all problems are gone.

    For those who have similar problems, the clue in MSE was a difference in dates between when the definitions have been downloaded, and when they were loaded. I suspect that the dates were important for download that prompted my initial request for help on this forum, and I know another website with which I had trouble's timestamp.

    Thanks to all who helped and good luck to those who have a similar problem!

    Before Kaspersky, I had on Windows Live safety - do not remember the name right but had for several years until it was discontinued by Microsoft. I didn't run the Norton removal tool before installing Kaspersky.

    Preliminary stage: Please uninstall Spybot & Ad - Aware, at least for now. Two of them include "real-time system protections" that could play a role here.

    Tip: If you don't fully understand what that Tea Timer (Spybot) & (Ad-Aware) Ad-Watch do and how they do it, one of them only enable if you decide to reinstall the applications when we're done here. [IMHO, you need not other antispyware applications if MSE is installed & working properly.]

    ACTIONS:

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    1B. download Windows Live OneCare cleanup utility, save it to your desktop: http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/c/b/4cb845e7-1076-437b-852a-7842a8ab13c8/OneCareCleanUp.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. double-click on the file that you saved in # 1 a above, to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    3. double-click the file that you saved in # 1 b above to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then reboot again.

    4. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

    5. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run that set it by DEFAULT and modes and AGGRESSIVE. [1]

    6. restart a last time & test. Make absolutely certain that you can manually update MSE successfully!

    Comment: If MBAM detected & removed '5 Trojan infection', there is a good chance that the computer is already infected when you installed MSE a month ago!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [1] full Disclosure: the difficulty operating in AGGRESSIVE mode will remove your update history but not list the updates installed in Add/Remove programs.
  • Error code 0 x 80070424 with the Defender, Windows Firewall in Windows 7, does not not for me solutions
    I got the error code for my firewall, I read all of the solutions posted to what I could find, but there is still something wrong. First, I did the analysis of malware and viruses. He found the rootkit malware and removed, but no viruses were found. I tried to manually start the firewall but it does not exist in the services menu. The problem is that none of the Microsoft downloads for automatically fix or other downloads posted to help download for me. As soon as I click on "run" he said that it contained a virus and was eliminated. I did a scan for virus twice.  Any suggestions?
    The description you have provided sounds like your computer is infected with the 'new' Sirefef variant which poses problems for MSE and Windows Defender.
  • Vista - update security KB982381 fails with the error Code: 80071AA7
    Update Cumulative security for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista still fails to install.  At the beginning I had 6 automatic updates which could not install (usually NOT a problem), so I individually installed each... reboot after each update.  Success on those.  I tried to update KB982381 more than 8 times without success.  I don't use IE as my browser.  My computer is constantly trying to install this and reboot... never works.  Don't know what to do.
    I did everything you suggested in the last email and I am sorry to say that the update has failed once again.   I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser, but I open IE * to run its difficulty etc.  I ran Windows Update (reset) in aggressive mode (what settings it reset?  I noticed when I went to the Control Panel, to look for updates and it listed that it is 'never' updates etc.).  When I did find updates sent to download, it came with one that was a failure and the other for Windows Defender.  This one has installed fine.  Let me know what I should try!  Thank you
