  No, the method of selection and the mask does not have these features, but you can always do with normal brushes.

  You make hard work of it.  Way the easiest way is to use the layer style drop yelli.  If you don't have all the options you need, gout yelli right-click and choose Create layer.  This will separate the layer style, you can add a mask layer etc.

  Another way, and what I tend to do is ctrl-click the layer object to load a selection.  Add a new layer under the object layer and fill the selection with black (Alt backspace with black as foreground color).  Then, you can free transform; Add a layer mask, perform a gradient to the top of the layer mask, blur etc.

  SFO you have an active selection, you can either a) add Uneconsequence mask, or b) open an adjustment layer. Both will have the completed mask in black outside the selected area.  I like this option because the mask properties panel gives you options addional.  However the horses for courses.  All that works best in the situation you are in.

• Select a layer mask?

  Somehow, I put something PS CS 5, which does not allow me to click on the layer mask to select. I choose the mask using the mask Panel, but it's annoying and I would really like to know what I put to reset on the normal way, I work. This does not seem to be offset by photoshop in general I can open files and you can select the mask by rolling the cursor over them and clicking on, but there are specific images, I'm working on currentily who seem to have this setting is applied to them.  Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

  You can be in quick mask mode. Try to hit the Q key.

• Selection of selective color using masks

  I suspect the question has been asked, but I can't seem to find an answer that meets my needs, so if this is a FAQ, please just tell me what exact phrase searching?

  My problem: I want to make B & W of a crowd image, but keep the color on all the yellow shirts.  It's not hard to do on one or two shirts, because you can go and select them manually using a desaturated adjustment layer, but in this case I can not manually select all the yellow shirts that there are simply too many proudly South African football fans .  The enhance-> Adjust color-> replace color almost works, but it changes the selective colors.  I want to change the whole picture except for a selected color.  This isn't its too complicated but I can't seem to find the answer to my question here or on Google.

  If there is a way to get a mask of the "changed" colors of the enhance-> Adjust color-> color replacement function, which may operate as you can then apply the inverse of the same mask change except the red shirts.  Maybe there is a better way...   I'm new to Photoshop (using PS elements 5) but cannot imagine that anyone else has ever had this problem.

  Try this, if it is not much of another yellow in the picture:

  Use the magic wand to select shirts. Clear the adjacent check box and you have to play with the tolerance, but it's doable. Then select > Inverse.

  Layer > new adjustment layer > Hue/Saturation and Desaturate.

  You can give your selection a 1-pixel feather (select > feather) if the edges are not too strong, before making the new layer.

• Cannot save preferences and select mask question

  I'm unable to use the new 2015,5 Select cc and mask button, I get the error:

  Unable to apply Select the workspace and mask because the disk is not available.

  I've deleted and reinstalled Photoshop 2015.5, when I initially installed it I deleted all previous versions of CC (2014 / 2015), but this has not helped, now, when I'm out photoshop I get the following message is displayed:

  Could not save preferences because the file is locked, you don't have the necessary access permissions or another program is using the file. Use the "Get Info" command in the Finder to make sure that the file is unlocked and you are allowed to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to another file or duplicate in the Finder.

  If you mean the magic wand tool, no. There is only the regular lasso tool and the quick selection in the selection and the mask tool.

  Now that "refine the mask" was replaced by "select and mask" I have a slight but very annoying question. In the past, I would always be out in a new layer, I check "remember settings" and I didn't need to make the selection on the following images. It seems that the select interface and mask new, updates don't remember the setting new layer (or any other choice except for the selection "default").

  Have you tried to use it with the option "decontaminate colors"? It should stick in this way.

  Get rid of the tool refine edge is probably the largest in the history of the Socialist Party. I like this tool and use constantly to get my masks just as it should. Select new and mask the tool only works on layers pixelated. I understand that for the detection/RADIUS tool to work correctly the mask must be on a pixel layer. However, this tool is not all that refine edge offers! The smooth, feather, contrast and update tools are extremely powerful, as well as quick and easy access, when you work with masks on adjustment layers. My quick shortcut to refine the edge is no longer works. I have to drag the mask to a layer pixel or find other ways to adapt. None is as effective as a fast/command R option and typing in my settings that I tab by refinements. I am EXTREMELY frustrated and disappointed. Does anyone know of any workaround solutions to return refine edge? Help, please!

  I thank everyone for your comments here, we are actively looking for the behaviors described. If you have files that you can send us where you see a significant deterioration in output using select and mask, we want these files. They will help us identify specific problems in the flow of work and with the underlying algorithm.

  One of the behaviors described in this thread is that select and mask only works on a pixel layer. It is a bug (we have a difficulty, that we are working on) and in the meantime, a workaround is available by double clicking on the mask to enter the select space and no mask on layers of pixels.

  We are looking for also actively to the performance of the brush edge refine subtract - please stay tuned for updates over here that we are building a case to identify exactly what might be the underlying problem.

  This is the first version of Select and mask, but we have on our backlog of adding other tools in this space in order to allow a greater number of workflow. More to come here.

• How to add (or subtract) a selection to a layer mask existing?

  If I already have a layer mask, I have a selection, and I want to add that selection to the mask layer (I want the layer mask to reveal more), how can I do?

  The way I would do it now (it's too long) is Ctrl + click on the layer mask, add to the selection I want to modify it with, except that the selection, remove the mask layer and create a new layer of the saved selection mask.

  I don't know there must be an easier way. I Googled it and found no answer.
