Service packs, security updates, and the performance of the PC

First turn off let me say that I am certainly NOT too computer savvy... I know my way around, but do not know what things to say or do... That being said... My computer runs very slowly, even though I have downloaded MSE, clean space disk and Defrag... I was looking on my installed programs, and I have SO MANY service packs and security updates! (1) how security updates day and service packs? (2) they occupy space and make my computer run slower? (3) is it OK to delete the service packs and security updates

1 - security patches close security holes that have been found or improve security in some way. Service Packs are large infrequent updates that contain a selection of 'wound' of many previous updates as well as adding features/features additional.

2 & 3 - Microsoft/Windows updates take little space, but not a huge amount. However, given their importance and usefulness, I highly recommend that you leave alone, and then assign windows Update automatic recommended settings. If you start to remove the updates in a timely manner without the necessary expertise you can cause you problems.

Even if you say that you've defragmented & used cleaning disc, there are a few other things to look at in this article:

  • How to install Win7 64-bit Service Pack 1, updates and applications correctly

    What I want to do:

I have 2 x legitimate copies of Win 7 64 bit SP1 on DVD.  I want to install on 2 separate PC with new facilities.

The problem that I've encountered so far:

    I formatted the hard disk in the #1 PC, installed Win 7 SP1, install the drivers that came with the motherboard (with the series of reboots), active Windows and tried to run Windows updates before installing additional software.  Windows Update installed a 'Windows Client software update' update and then began the verification of updates.  However, it remains to check for updates for always)<17 hours). ="" windows="" update="" shouldn't="" have="" choked="" at="" this="" early="" stage,="" so="" something="" has="" changed="" on="" the="" microsoft="" side="" of="" things. ="" i="" know="" that="" the="" hardware="" is="" fine="" because="" i="" had="" win="" 7="" on="" it="" prior="" and="" i="" ran="" diagnostics="" on="" it="" to="" be="" sure. ="" a="" full="" a/v="" scan="" was="" performed="" to="" ensure="" everything="" is="" clean. ="" i="" haven't="" started="" pc="" #2="">

    My question:

What is the proper sequence of steps to get Windows 7 SP1, updates, MS Office, 3rd the party games (ex: WoW, SC-2, Diablo 3, steam), McAfee A / V, etc., installed clean so that my PC run smooth?  I know that some software requires that a specific minimum version of .NET installed, so the installation sequence is important.  I will be formatting the drive on PC #1 once again before a new attempt.

    PC Hardware #1 Info:

-Card mother Asus Z87 - Pro (embedded ethernet and wireless adapters)

    -Processor i3-4130

    -16 GB OF RAM

    -EVGA GTX 650 graphics card

-Drive hard Seagate SATA 6 to 2

    -LiteON SATA DVD burner

-Keyboard Logitech K120 and MS Mouse (the two USB)

    PC Hardware #2 info:

-Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA Motherboard (on-board ethernet and wireless adapters)

    -Core i5 - 4670 K CPU

    -16 GB OF RAM

    -EVGA GTX 660 graphics card

-Drive hard Seagate SATA 6 to 2

    -LiteON SATA DVD burner

-Keyboard Logitech K120 and MS Mouse (the two USB)

I have the original driver/utility DVD that come with motherboards and I have the updated drivers downloaded from the Asus site.  Each drive has 2 partitions.  Partition-1, drive C is for Win 7 OS, and it is marked as active/bootable.  Partition-2, drive D is where the updated motherboard drivers.  Both partitions are formatted with NTFS file systems.

    Thanks in advance.

We have progress!  Found 112 updates and I started the download.  Thanks to André and J.W. Stuart.  It took like 5 to 7 hours to produce a list of the updates after you install the update rollup.  Either way, I found the following article, shortly before I met the answers here:

    http://www.MakeUseOf.com/tag/convenience-rollup-halfs-Windows-7-SP1-installation-time/

After reading the article and the responses, I thought the rollup was the right path to take and ran with it.  I installed the battery update before the update rollup.  No errors were encountered during the installation of these two elements.

    Finally...

1 - Microsoft needs to get their Tech chat based personal support off this dry and outdated script they use.  They need to know about the method of rollup.  However, the tech. I met in a chat session before coming here, was quite distraught and kept asking to do a remote desktop session, even if I refused 3 times.  A tech polished, very persistent but distraught.  The chat session was not my home PC on a PC at work.

can 2 - I get a good Service Pack 2 for Windows 7, please?  Make available via a file down to local facilities, do so in Windows Update and download for Win 7 64 Service Pack 2 DVD image.

    3. he does really not take 5 + hours to produce a list of the necessary updates.  The Windows Update client should really be changed to show some real status beyond this silly green bar.  I think it is that a Client of Windows Update request is sent to Microsoft, and this request is pending.  The queue is probably priority based with Windows 10 get a higher priority on Windows 7 (Microsoft bias?).  Even if my theory of priority queue is correct, turn around time on the application is properly synchronized in a world of Gigabit Ethernet, 5 G WI - FI and cheap access broadband I have-net.

4 10/Windows... too many questions/gripes to speak, but I leave it on the table.  Win 8/10 looks blocky with less of its border, for windows/AC tablets.  This isn't a modern user interface.  The user interface is dumbed-down and is reminiscent of Windows 3.11, or as it is a cobbled together collection of JavaScript in the browser user interface.  The menu start alone is a huge waste of time resources CPU and memory.  Windows 7 semi-translucides borders please.  No cost and no hassle.

original title: could not resolve the problem of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 update!

    Hey there,

I got Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1 in my laptop when I bought it. Recently there was no updates of security (e.g., KB2481109) to install it into my system with a error: 80073712 and I had received a notification from windows to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2update. I tried to install it from windows update, but I got the error: 8024200d. I read the solution on this site and followed by download the stand-alone file and install "System Update Readiness Tool" (KB947821). ". After that I downloaded the standalone version "Windows Vista Service Pack 2" (KB948465) and tried to install it, but I got the error: 800f081f. "» I did Scan SFC which there is "no question of integrity" in the system, uninstalled "Avira Antivirus software" and again tried to install Service Pack 2 , but again, I've got the error: 80073712 After all this I couldn't solve the problem. Please provide some tips if anyone has solved the same or has a solution!

    Thank you very much

    Hi Electrocuteud,

You have access to a Windows Vista installation disc? If so, follow the steps in this document to perform an InPlace upgrade. This will reinstall Vista without making any changes to the files and programs on the computer. Even if your data and programs must be safe, it is always advisable to make sure that you have a recent backup before major changes on the computer.

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!

Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) otherwise and before using a flash drive or the SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formatted:

  • Update Service Pack - where to download the SP2 for Windows XP

    original title: Update Service Pack

I recently had to restore to full factory on my computer due to a virus.  Now, I try to bring my computer updated.  I tried to get these updates via the Microsoft Web site, but I'm unable to receive or download updates because only now have Service Pack 1.  Y at - it another way to download the Service Pack 2/3 so I can make sure my computer is up to date.  Thank you.

See the following (slightly modified) longtime MS MVP PA Bear:

Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything in the list below, in order, before connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e. other computers) and before you plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external computer diskotherwise:

    1. Make sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled.
    2. Uninstall any moment invalid Norton, McAfee, etc., free version of test which was also reinstalled, run the appropriate removal tool (see below), and then install an application antivirus of your choice (for example, http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspxMicrosoft Security Essentials- free).
    3. Arrival to Windows Update & get the computer fully patched - see article below
    4. If you use other than MSE antivirus, consider making an application also antimalware as MalwareBytes AntiMalware.

TIP: Use another and negative computer to download programs for, for example, SP2 or SP3 installation, the installer for your new anti-virus application and or other removal tools cited below. Transfer these files to CD or DVD (not a flash drive) and then transfer the files of the CD or DVD on the desktop of the computer you are using.

I have an older version of Windows XP version 1.0 on a computer in November 2001 of the gateway that I have updated all offers updates of material such as BIOS and motherboard.  Then to the service pack 2 update so I can load an antivirus software which does not load unless you have SP2 or later version.  It loads like a champ and restarts, but Windows does not start normally, I have to start in safe mode and remove SP2.  Is there a driver error that I need to find?  Or is there an other update I need before SP2 for such an old version of windows? • Vista Service Pack 1 update fails - computer will not start and cannot be repaired

The computer which is an Acer desktop computer, running Windows Vista Premium.  In the last 6 months updated Vista tried Service Pack 1 update to install Vista about 8 times and failed every time a reason any.  Just before this latest incident, a facility was "cancelled" in the Middle for some reason any.  I restarted the computer and almost immediately was advised that there is an update, which turned out be SP-1.

I started the update, and some time later I received a message that the update was successful, and that he had to be restarted the computer.  I clicked on the button restart and the Installation continues during the shutdown.

When the computer tried to restart initialization failed and I ended up after several lines of information that looked as if it might be checking drivers and then information began to look as if she might be reading the register lines.  Each line has 2 numbers separated by a slash (/), who scored on a single line at the top of the screen, (white letters on black background) after a certain time the count to stop with the line of text of flickering on the same entry.

It is the line that goes to the screen when the information keeps changing.

    !! 0xc01a001d!  37636/92292 (\Registry\Machine\components\winners\x86...)

Since the failure of the Windows Vista SP1 update, when the system begins to start, after a short while, he starts playing what seems like lines in the registry, and after a few moments he always stops with the same accurate information just flicker.  At this point, it seems that this scenario will continue forever.  The hard drive is accessible, as if trying to read something, over and above.  The hard drive light flashes, instead of being on regularly, but only for a while.  After that, even the flickering stops.

I have tried to start mode without failure, then after loading some files and after some time (5 or 10 seconds) the displayed files always end with the same file at the bottom of the list and what seems to be a status extend the message please know...  Shortly after the screen is empty, the fails to start and the computer is restarted.

Usually what will happen is that the computer will begin to start up again, but because the previous boot failed, it asks if you want to go to startup repair, which, at first, seems to work fine, but after a little time it brings up a dialog box asking if you want to restore to the previous good Restore Point.  The display will then return to the same routine he had previously, and she runs to always if not interrupted.

If you click the Cancel button, a message appears indicating that you cannot interrupt the current process, so the only way that you can try something else is to Shut Off the Power in now the switch down, permanently.

[Note: the notes above have not all accurate messages, Word for Word, exceot for the Hex error line.]
