  Why can't turn off password protected sharing?  I use a Vista SP2 64-bit computer.  When I try to turn it off, I uncheck the button but when I click on the app it changes again to on.  I googled this question and tried many solutions, but so far nothing has worked.

  1) click Start

  I'm working on a proposal to set up an area of protcted password of the customer site (containing a list of the members) and understand there are different ways to do this.

  As I understand the simplest way, and one that I have done, is to password protect a directory on the server host. The disadvantage with this, seems, is that there is a universal user name and password that have been assigned to the directory, each user has to use. In other words, they cannot choose their own username and different password for everything everyone elses.

  So my question is, what are the other options to password protect a page or a directory on a site? I don't consider myself a great expert so simple would certainly be better for me.
