Several houses of Oracle and SAN

Hi gurus,
I need to install two instances of oracle 10g on solaris 10 and have 6 TB of available to use SAN.
I understand that I can put all the files in data/redo/arch on the san.

My question is,

can I place the binary oracle, oracle home etc on the SAN rather than the local disk? advanatages/disadvantatges etc.

Thank you is advanced,
Newbie
can I place the binary oracle, oracle home etc on the SAN rather than the local disk? advanatages/disadvantatges etc.

Yes you can. This is often used for some cases (common house of Oracle RAC).
My opinion is space SAN is too expensive for a space of waste in this way (if there is another option).
Note in case you create the RAC installation so you can make shared Oracle Home, but do not try to create shared inventory.

  • Reissue of links binary Oracle and several houses of Oracle

    Hello

My question is related to the reissue of Oracle binary links in the following scenario:

In the largest migration project, we are moving all the databases from one server to another. Old and new server operating system is the same: HP - UX 11.23i. There are 5 databases on the source, each with its own Oracle Home (and binary Oracle) server. All binaries for all Oracle databases are version 10.2.0.3.
On the new server we have some of the migrated databases already in production. Now our DBA wants to move another data base, and given that for each binary database are also moved from source to the destination server, it must create a link to the binary files on the target server. We must stop all databases on the server target to re-edit it for that one DB, even if they all have different Oracle Homes (binary)?

    Thanks for your replies
    Maciej

If each database has a dedicated ORACLE_HOME, just stop the database in the ORACLE_HOME you are re-binder. Other databases on the server that have their own dedicated ORACLE_HOMEs can be left running.

  • VC ++: using several houses

Hello! Having problems with several houses of oracle. Our client uses 8.0.5 and 11R1 on the same computer.
Our program uses 11R1 and works with CADOConnection. When 8.0.5 is set by default to home, our application will fail. When we put
11R1 as default 8.0.5 home, old application fails. I tried to configure system variables PATH and ORACLE_HOME 11R1 path for our application, to force them using 11R1 House, but still have no luck. Looking for troubleshooting this problem are also without effect.

So the question is: ' how to change oracle home of our application?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

UPD. Something tells me that I should register oracle oledb DLL, everytime I try to change the home page... Hope I'm wrong...

PS. forgive me my bad English.

Both apps using OLEDB? Because it is a COM object, OLEDB is a single product home, so can only be used in one House at a time.

If I remember correctly however, Oracle will not come out with an OLEDB provider before 806, so I wonder if it's actually in your 805 app using OLEDB.

It is difficult to offer a suggestion without knowing with certainty what use applications and this error message you get, but the jist of it is:

    (1) only one version of OraOLEDB can be stored in the registry at a given time.
    (2) OraOLEDB requires the matching version of the Oracle client software to be first in your PATH environment variable.
    (3) pretty well however it connects, the 805 House will probably need to be first in the path, as a principle no driver Oracle Windows multiple homes very well taken Oracle supported by day 8.0. (odbc, oledb, oo4o, etc.)
    (4) even while 11.1, the OLEDB provider would have to be first in your path.
    (5) you can provide a specific application paths through the following: http://www.codeguru.com/Cpp/W-P/dll/article.php/c99, but you won't get around to try to use multiple versions of OLEDB at the same time.

    It will be useful,

. Profile (or its variant) is processed when the owner user account logs on the system. So if change you it after you log on this subject will have to be rerun. You have not to sign out and then sign back in to make. You can 'source' file like this:

    myosprompt$> . .profile

Notice that the syntax... dot space If you simply run .profile it will run in a child process and nothing will affect your current process. Using the syntax 'source' (dot space filename) defined environment variables will be seen by your current process.

But it's really a clumsy way to do. I would not depend on having to constantly change and my .profile file source.

What did you find when read you on "oraenv?

First the background and intention, then the real problem.

    Background

I have built a virtual machine under Vbox and I try to set up as close as possible to imitate our primary development server. The dev server had several houses and houses of asm db facilities. Currently only one of each is actually in use. Shows the current inventory

So I thought that the best way to get to the same configuration would be to install different products in the same order that they are indexed in the inventory. After each successful installation, take a snapshot of the virtual machine, so I have a point to return if the next step is having problems. I'm so glad I did.
First, install db 11.2.0.1, no database. completed as planned.
Then, install GI 11.2.0.1, autonomous. If I tried to install all software, he wanted a clustered environment, so I chose (as I had a lot of vm earlier and simpler) install and configure a standalone, which required that I provide records for a DG. OK, actually, no problem. Snapshot taken by this point.

Then just install 11.2.0.1, autonomous, but in a different House - this time under ORACLE_BASE. After a few false starts I realized that I first had to force drop the disk group, and then force deconfig installation (perl rootcrs.pl - deconfig-force).

The fun starts now. Execute runInstaller, select "install and config for a stand-alone server network infrastructure" and everything seems fine until the end of root.sh.

    It seems actually finishes with
Successfully configured Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server

I searched google and MOS on key error messages, but came up with nothing that seemed useful in this case.

    Ideas?

    Hello
Have you checked/var/opt/oracle/oratab? Probably the first GI facility to input of + ASM and second installation fails because the instance is already set up by the first installation?
Can you try to make installations of GI (software only) first for Ora11g_gridinfrahome1 and Ora11g_gridinfrahome2 and then for and the latest GI for Ora11g_gridinfrahome3 installation, you can choose "install and configure" installation option so that no conflict occurs.

  • Restore the database on the two houses of Oracle

    Hi all

    Oracle 9iR2

    OEL 5

I have our database of PROD rman backup, the SID is also named PROD.

I want to restore it to a different server, but I want two database restored the same SID on the same server.

    For example, I create OracleHome1/u01/app/oracle and OracleHome2 another/u02/app/Oracle.

Then I'll bring backup rman for each House, create two identical databases. Is this possible?

    Thank you very much

No, 32-bit guest OS cannot use hardware virtualization assisted using a type 2 hypervisor. VirtualBox is an application and type 2 hypervisor. What you need is the Oracle VM x 86 Server, which is a type 1 hypervisor where you can run a 32-bit guest with the support of paravirtualized system.

The following will give you a good overview: paravirtualization (PV) - Xen

    Hello everyone!

I have Encolosure C7000 system with 4 blades BL460c already installed ESXi 5.1U1 (HP custome ISO image). Everything works fine now, but I do not understand something:

-What is the management network which I use vSphare Client to connect to? It is a private network to manage ESXi servers what difference with VMnetwork used by Virtual Machines? Because I've set up an IP address for this connection manually, but it is of course separate with IP addresses, I used on Virtual Machines.

-If my system has problem, so I have to reinstall ESXi, license keys can be used again? Already, I have 8 license key for 4 blades (2 CPUs per server), but they have not yet used. Because I am new to ESXi, cause I had to reinstall ESXi several times to understand.

Because I don't see it on the ESXi server. And on the OS I installed on the Guest Virtual Machines, I see nothing new in Device Manager. I thought that this guest operating system will detect the mezzanine card. But I see only mezzanine card that connect to the P2000 by SAN switch in ESXi (see image here http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/684/dsc04088k.jpg ). Yes, it's a separate network used only for traffic management between ESXi hosts and vCenter - it is also the network used to connect to the environment - that's different, then the network used by your virtual machines

-If my system has problem, so I have to reinstall ESXi, license keys can be used again? Already, I have 8 license key for 4 blades (2 CPUs per server), but they have not yet used. Because I am new to ESXi, cause I had to reinstall ESXi several times to understand.

Yes the license keys can be reused, and if you use vCenter licenses will be managed by vCenter

But I see only mezzanine card that connect to the P2000 by SAN switch in ESXi (see image here http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/684/dsc04088k.jpg ). To my knowledge, I think that ESXi server have to detect the P2000 as hardware device. Can someone teach me step by step install and configure a San on ESXi? Or show me a tutorial because I searched but only iSCSI results.

Yes, you will be able to configure the San later - by default, the virtual machine will not see the SAn, as it is virtualized by your ESXi host - all the VM will see is a virtual SCSi disk - this doc's guide to vmware for storage - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-511-storage-guide.pdf - you can visit the website of HP they might have documentation on configuring P2000 for vSphere -.

  • several subnets by VLANS and ports link

    Hello

    I need some clarification.

Our iSCSI SAN storage (Dell MD3660i0 requires a separate subnet by port.

We require paths multiple access and balancing in VMware.

To achieve this in ESXi 5.1 we need binding ports... BUT the binding of ports is supported only if the vmks are all in the SAME domain in accordance with these two KBs broadcasting

VMware KB: Considerations for use binding software iSCSI ports in ESX/ESXi

VMware KB: When the use of several VMkernel ports with port required to access the storage of two or more tables on different br...

OK... probably so I simply put my all subnets in ISCSI storage in one VLAN and everything will be ok (one VLAN is after all a broadcast domain, both are stuff of L2)... This would respond to the requirements of KBs... If VMware means "area of distribution" in the true sense of the term.

So my question is can you configure the port in this way binding? It is supported by VMware?

VMware has come back to me (in fact the author of one of the kb/s I've referenced)

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2038869

He confirmed that the terminology used in the KB is misleading and "broadcast domain", it actually means "subnet" so not layer 3 layer 2.

This means that you can NOT have multiple subnets in a broadcast domain (VLAN) AND use the SW iSCSI port binding.

    BUT

He told me (he is very familiar with the Dell MD3660i iSCSI kit), you don't have to have binding of ports to achieve several Multipathing and load balancing. If you have a requirement for several subnets of your iSCSI SAN provider then just create multiple vmks on different subnets, and DO NOT make the port binding. The fact that they are on different subnets will be enough to achieve the multiple paths

It updates the KB to make this much clearer.

    I hope this helps someone

  • A lieneter for the two houses of oracle?

    Hello

If I have two houses of Oracle on the same servers (say 10.2.0.4 and 10.2.0.5), do I have to set up two listeners (one for the databases of each home page) a listener (of the superior Oracle home version probably) Gold will be good enough? If a listener is enough, is there a special setup for these cases?

    Best regards

    Hello

Yes, it is possible to create a listener to manage both houses of Oracle, see links.

  • Unlike char in ORACLE and SQL SERVER

    Hello gurus,

I tried to querying data from Oracle to sql server through linked server, but get me an error! set length corresponds to the error! I know there are CHAR data type in sql server and thus as in oracle.

But when I use the CAST FUNCTION with CHAR it works fine
    -- error code

      select * from openquery( linkoracle11
               select  col1, col2, col3 from test_table )

    -- say col3 char(1)   -- data type
    ---

    -- working code

      select * from openquery ( linkoracle 11
               select  col1, col2, cast (col3 as char(1)) as col_3 from test_table )
I was wondering, what is the difference between oracle and sql server for the CHAR data type?

    The gurus of the idea?

    Thank you

What is the error you get?

What is the characters in database and NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS game on your Oracle system?

    SELECT *
      FROM v$nls_parameters
     WHERE name LIKE '%CHARACTERSET';

    SQL> SHOW PARAMETER nls_length_semantics;

What is the character set of data in SQL Server?

If your local database is a variable length character set (like UTF8) and NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS is set to (default) BYTES, a char (1) allocate 1 byte of storage which may not be sufficient for a single character. The receiving application may need to allocate a buffer with 3 times more many bytes as there are characters in order to ensure that it will be able to process the result. I don't know why add an implicit CAST that would change, but since we are several levels removed from the code to figure out how large a buffer to allocate, it is not very surprising.

My Internet EXPLORER Favorites list include several photos, text files and downloaded web pages, of which none appear when I import my Internet EXPLORER Favorites list in Firefox. Is there a way I can remember those?

    There is a work around:

Export your IE Favorites to an HTML file, and then import it into Firefox. If you have questions more do not hesitate to ask.
