Should I bring my HP desktop computer new back to Best Buy?

I recently bought a HP Pavilion Desktop 500-164 nodel.  It came with the Windows 8.0 operating system.  He also had a Norton Product on the disk.  I have been using Norton for many years and have several licensed copies.  After turning on my new PC, I went to activate Norton.  I got a message saying that Norton is not compatible with Windows 8.0.  I was shocked...  Why HP factory install this software if it is not compatible with the operating system?  I did some research and discovered that Norton will run if I update the OS to 8.1.  I did, and Norton is running.

So far so good... Until...

I find now that I have occasional difficulties, connection to the internet.  I have located the problem to my new office.  All other PCs in my house to connect without a problem.  I noticed a message in "HP Support Assistant.  I check it out and asked to have my new Desktop checked to see if HP has tested my office with Win. 8.1, while, incompatible drivers might cause problems with the connection to the internet.  (hmmmmm... looks like my problem)

I have run the check only to find that HP has NOT certified of my desktop with Win 8.1.  Therefore, I can not receive updated which are compatible with my system drivers. (my system has updated a few times since I turned it on)   For the most part, my system over time, could seriously errode and become unusable.

It's amazing.  I buy a system with preinstalled software that are not compatible and cannot now be updated for more recent versions of the operating system without serious consequences.  Are there plans to certify this combination to Win 8.1 desktop computers?  HP is just going to let this Destop like that?

Can anyone provide some assistance?  Or, should I return this box at Best Buy and replace it with a Dell or IBM product?

Appreciate all the thoughts, comments and advice.

BTW, I am an HP retiree, I only use HP products.  I'm quite surprised HP would put an office there unsupported.

Please tell me I'm wrong to understand something?  ;-)

Bob

Thank you much for Bill's response.  I really appreciate it.  Yes, Norton which was incompatible with Win 8.0 was the version that has been preinstalled on the hard drive.  I opened one that was preinstalled and got the error message.  Sorry I can't tell you exactly what message I got, it has been a while.  In essence, the message said that Norton is incompatible with Wiin 8.0.  Then, I went on this forum and learned that I would need to udate to 8.1 to run Norton I did.  It has worked OK at this time.

I see the same exact material that my PC configuration is now shipped with Win 8.1.  Once I realized I felt much better.  My PC is a 500-164.  The PC being bundled with 8.1 is 500-214.

Thanks a lot for the next upward.  Yet once again, I really appreciate it!

  • New HP desktop, Windows8, Ubuntu, UEFI and a desktop computer that is no longer start

I have a new HP desktop computer purchased just before Christmas, 2012.  Not realizing the problems with Windows8 and UEFI, I tried to load the version 12.1, Ubuntu, and now the Office does not start.

Here is the chronology of the events:

1A tried to install Ubuntu linux 12.1 with dual boot NO

2 once installed Ubuntu, the system would not start and crashes with an error message

    3. accessed in UEFI menu and security disabled for all boot devices

4 tried to start again, but the only thing on the screen is a picture of Seattle and the system will not meet any keyboard input

At this point you can power cycle this machine, everything you want, and it puts just a photo of Seattle.  I can't access BIOS UEFI, or anything like that and the machine will not respond to any keyboard input.

I did some research and it seems that this new version of the UEFI running on this desktop computer will not allow the machine to run anything other than Windows8?

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?  I don't want doesn't matter what Microsoft anything running on this PC, and want to dual-boot.  I have not the recovery disc for this desktop computer.

I think about how to solve this problem first becomes the machine to respond to keyboard entries, enter the UEFI and re - enable security this could allow me boot Windows8 still?

    Thank you!

I finally got the machine to respond to the keyboard.  I found the solution on a linux Web site

    1. turn off the machine by pulling the power cord

    2. remove the battery

    3. press and hold the Power Off button for 60 seconds

    4 replace the battery

    5. start and hold down the ESC key

BTW, I will update this thing with some notes as this can help someone else.

The machine is a brand new HP P2-1310.  It comes with Windows 8.

Try to wipe the hard drive and install linux has been in vain due to the new implementation of UEFI.  At best, I could install linux on a new partition, but the machine does never start the linux OS.  It will start only Windows8 successfully.

As near as I can tell, UEFI will prevent any OS other than Windows8 currently running on this computer.  See linux UEFI as a kind of security attack and simply prevents the machine to use.  The Open Source community works now this last attempt of MS and PC manufacturers to prevent consumers who buy a new PC to install anything other than Windows8.  Run a search on this issue and you can get more information on the latest status.

My guess is that sometime in 2013 different versions of linux Open Source will receive the digital signature required to interact with UEFI and load their OS on the new PC, or they will develop a workaround solution.  My suggestion for anyone considering buying a new PC that intends to install linux, immediately after that purchase should consider carefully what is not possible.  Right now I still can't do and I'm stuck now with Windows8.  If I had to do it again, I will not buy a new PC, but rather just go online and buy something.  After this experience I discovered used PCs with fast processors and a lot of memory can be purchased for $100 or less (craigs list), and because they are pre-UEFI, they will be easily load linux.

I have a new HP Envy with Windows 8 desktop computer that still does not run properly. I have rebooted, restored (im doing this), ran chkdsk, sfc/scannow, malware, virus, uninstall/install etc and my machine wil always do not run for a long time without going through some sort of problem after an hour or two.  Can anyone suggest what to do about this? I read a lot of information online on all the windows 8 and fixes bugs, etc, but anything Microsoft/Windows, which ensures its customers, a hotfix or compesating their customers with software that still works. This isn't a hardware problem, and I can't keep day and bad shooting and trying to fix the day things in?

    Sincerely,
A client who is a loss for words.
Here are some problems in no particular order.
1.) apps to not install it, and/or Windows saying they are when they are in fact not. The fix to install / uninstall, or get on the site of windows directly in general does not, and or does not at all.
The change permissions 2.) does not work on files that you should be able to access in changing oxnership, permissions, etc.
3.) Google chrome won't let me access my account of microsoft (or fact rarely) trying to access assistance. But internet Explorer doesn't?
Randomly will increase from Internet 4.) a previous connection wired to wireless to a reboot.
5.) my 8 'key' windows was only shown to me after that I have let Windows scan my machine online? Why? I paid for this... I restarted it and it says: service not available (it worked the third attempt which was 1-3 minutes after the initial analysis). Windows only showed my product ID not the key. I know that my victory. 8 was OEM when preinstalled I bought it new, but why didn't we files on it that had nothing to do with activation, appearing on dates for three weeks, or so before I bought it. What is the 'activation of the factory'?
6 :) Windows Essentials does not hang for a long time, and the troubleshooterprogram of update simply does not work (I had to go to the website to try tp operate, the bluetooth functionality is not good that there is an error.
7.) windows scan and repair gets stuck at 27% (Im not the only one with this problem).
8.), avery MS Office 2013 Disappears so often and not easy to reload "we have encountered a problem.

The computer manufacturer is responsible to see that it works properly with Windows 8. It says that it is a new computer I contact HP and make these problems their. If you don't get satisfactory results I turn and look elsewhere for a computer. Hope this helps and if you need another post to help and we will be happy to help you.

I use my MacBook Air as a desktop computer. Should I leave the charger plugged all the time or should I drain the battery and then recharge? What is the best for the battery?

Keep the computer plugged in whenever possible.

If you keep the computer always connected, make sure that at least twice a month

Run it on battery until battery charge level falls to about 40-50%.

Please don't completely discharge the battery. Discharge the battery completely will reduce wear and tear on the battery.

"The question is often asked:" should I disconnect my laptop from the mains when not in service? Under normal circumstances it should not be necessary because as soon as the lithium-ion battery is full, a properly functioning charger will stop the load and load the pad will only engage when the battery voltage drops to a low level. Most of the users do not remove AC power, and this practice is safe. »

  • Pavilion Slimline desktop computer: Reinstall W7 Home Premium on a new disc

I need to replace the disk of har on that office that the original one failed.  I'll have to reinstall the operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit).  Windows was originally preinstalled on the disc when buying so I don't have the original installation disks, but I found a set of HP recovery disks which I am sure that the from this computer.  My other computer is an HP, but is W8.1.

I have found a product key and tried to see if I could download a new copy of W7 but the product key is not used, I'd expect to see.  One of the groups of characters is "OEM" which I know is an indication that it has been installed by HP.  I got this key off the screen of the system until I took it off the service.  What steps should I take when I get a new drive for this computer to install Windows?

If you have the recovery for the PC, it will reinstall everything that was out there when it came from the factory, until he's actually executed.  Don't go too big on the new drive. as I said earlier "If the PC comes with Windows 7 is already installed, the PC can be returned to"sweet facorty"with the set of recovery disks and will be activated and the key will be installed."

    Hey tprefling,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft answers site!

Right-click on the zt.exe file and choose "Run as Administrator" to launch the program.

See if you are able to play the game.

If this does not work, turn your computer to clean the start State and see if the fgame plays very well.

To put your computer in a clean boot, follow these steps:

Note: If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We recommend strongly that you do not use System Configuration utility to change startup options on the computer, unless a support engineer Microsoft directs you to do so. This can make the computer unusable.

    1. sign the computer by using an account with administrator rights.

    2. click on start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    3. on the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)

    4. on the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
Note: Following this step lets services Microsoft continue to run. These services include networking, Plug-and-Play, record of events, error reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you can permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use to restore the system with the existing restore points.

    5. click OK and then click on restart.

For more information about the clean boot, see the link below:

In addition, change the size of virtual memory and see that helps. For more information, see:

If your copy of Windows is an OEM (delivered in a cardboard cover, as a single disc) then no. - the license was related to the motherboard of a fist on which it was installed.

If it's a complete detail of the product (fancy box, two discs), then Yes, you can install it in the new - activate by phone.

  • What's Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer capable of capturing a wireless signal? Should this function be switched?

Dell dimension 2400 desktop computer was plugged into the wireless router we have. We got a new computer and moved the old desktop (Dell 2400) in another room. It is not picking up, or even searching for a wireless signal. She still has this ability? How can we it give this ability?

The Dimension 2400 is not normally a built-in wireless networking capability.  To view, go to the Control Panel > Classic view > System > hardware > Device Manager and double-click network adapters .

If that doesn't show wireless network card, you can add it by buying a USB wireless network adapter or a Wireless PCI adapter card .

No there is no way, how the do, because the license of Windows Vista is part of the computer compaq laptop - this is the license OEM - and cannot be separated.

(in case the laptop is broken and cannot be repaired, then the license expiresand cannot be used on another computer)
