Shutdown VM in ESXi free 6 limited?

It seems that I can not stop a VMa VM with ESXi 6 free licenses:

VI-admin@VMA:~ > vmware-cmd - H xxxx - xxxx xxxx /vmfs/volumes/56ef14b0-0e8222ea-66cc-001517fd91a4/zoneminder/zoneminder.vmx soft stop Pei U

Cannot perform the operation:

SOAP fault:

-----------

Error string: the current licence or ESXi version prohibited the execution of the requested operation.

Lack of details: RestrictedVersionFault

If the free license is really limited to exercise such a function of base, or am I missing something?

Yes, the free license will restrict you making use of a product that will call APIs to perform operations.

vMA, PowerCLI etc. cannot really be used to manage the free ESXi hypervisor.

There is unfortunately quite hard limits, for example 8 GB vRAM, it's the total amount of RAM to virtual machines. I suggest that you look at version 4.1 and not 5.0.

(VMware is however always claim that the virtual machines on the free vSphere Hypervisor could use unlimited RAM. It is probably not correct.)

  • -OS - how host can be installed in ESXi FREE?

    Hello

Please forgive me, it's maybe a stupid question, but I'm not familiar with VMware.

According to titled question this discussion is:

-OS - how host can be installed in ESXi FREE?

Whit another word, can be installed on the same ESXi FREE more than a BONE and make this race at the "same time"?

Or is the FREE edition that is designed to run only one Instance at a time?

I know that most host on the same physical server required Memomy large and more a physical processor.

    Question:

How many maximum CPU and physical RAM are supported on ESXi FREE? Correct is the FREE load up to 8 GB of RAM?

    TIA

    Antonio

If I am mistaken, there is no limitation on access to storage in the free edition, other than the restriction that applies to all editions.

  • Devices USB 3.0 not being seen by 5.5 ESXI (free version)

I'm under 5.5 ESXI (free version) and I have recently just got 2 external drives 5 to, these are going to be my new NAS readers who are easily made by samba on a virtual machine Windows Ubuntu LTS 14.04. When I plug the readers to a port USB 2.0, the ESXI OS will detect them and allow me to add them to a virtual machine but USB 2.0 are slow and these drives are capable 3.0 and my motherboard has 2 3.0 ports then why not try to get the extra speed. When I plug these drives into the USB 3.0 ports OS ESXI cannot see them and when you try to add USB devices to the virtual computer it says no device available. No idea as to why this is? IM guess 3.0 is supported on ESXI 5.5 (free version) because it allows me to add a USB 3.0 controller support. Thanks in advance for any help.

    FIXED!

I have SSH on the server and typed this command:

    lsusb

It gave me a list of all my usb ports and devices. My 3.0 ports not appear. So I started the USB 3.0 xhci driver by typing this:

    vmkload_mod xhci

    then I typed in:

    lsusb

again and then is! my cameras are now available!

Add this command to the file /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh that it will always start with the loaded discs.

  • VCenter Server with VMWare ESXi free 5 5

    Hi all

Test the VCenter Server 5 Evaluation (60 day trial) to management all my 5 of VMWare ESXi (free license). It works with restrictions. These restrictions aren´t a problem for me. I need only to move (power off of virtual machines), clone, create templates for and organize my servers in a single interface VSphere Client. So, I would like to know what type of license of VCenter Server 5 woks if VMWare ESXi 5 free. Buy the VCenter Server 5 Standard?

Another doubt is if VStorage works with VMWare ESXi free license I.

    Best regards

    Fabio Sobral

Unfortunately the free ESXi hosts in vCenter management is not possible (except for the eval). The hosts of ESXi need a vCenter Server Agent license that is only available in editions 'paid' of ESXi.

  • VMware ESXi free 5.0 to paying

If I have ESXi free 5.0 installation in a real environment and I want to switch to paid one, is it as simple as just enter the new license code, once I buy VMware? Is there some thing other anythign I need to do?

    Thank you

For a stand-alone host, you'll just have to change the license key.

If you use vCenter you'll want to deploy what and you can manage your licenses here.   Your host may need additional configuration to advanced features (for example, network vMotion).

  • Upgrade to ESXi (free) 3.5 to ESX 4.1 (with license)

    Hello

Can I switch from ESXi (free) 3.5 to ESX 4.1 (with license)?

Yes, I need to change for ESX ESXi.

    Is possible?

    Thank you

Can I switch from ESXi (free) 3.5 to ESX 4.1 (with license)?

Yes, I need to change for ESX ESXi.

    Is possible?

Either way - ESX, ESXi and ESXi for ESX - requires a new installation of the operating system, there is no way to upgrade (regardless of the licensing). In case you have a data store VMFS on the drive where you install the operating system, you must back up (or migrate) and restore the virtual machine.

I suggest that you create separate logical volumes to the OS (~ 20 GB) and the VMFS. This way you can switch back from ESX to ESXi in the future without the need to evacuate VMs. As you may know, ESX 4.1 is the latest version with the Service Console.

  • Certificates on ESXi free edition

I use the free version of ESXi 4.1 on a box of spares for a test environment.  Since the vCLI/vMA does read-only for ESXi free edition, how can I replace the SSL certificate with those signed by a certification authority?  I tried to use curl to PUT files to the server (page 172 of the Guide of the ESXi Setup), but it gives me a 403 forbidden error.  The curl command I used was:

    $ cat rui.key: curl - verbose - insecurity - u root: REDACTED-t-- https://ESXi.local/host/ssl_key

Any thoughts out there of experts?

    Kind regards

    Chris

You can enable ssh & to use scp protocol for transferring files (winscp, fastscp...)

  • How can I determine if the host is ESXi free or licensed?

How can one know if an ESXi host is ESXi free, or if it is allowed?

I searched through the crowd on a couple of different configurations and I don't see anything obvious that indicates this.  I ask because there are some features that only work on ESXi under license and would like to be able to detect the server type I'm talking about.

I guess that there is a way to do so under the ha - Manager of licenses.

    Thank you

    Eric

The method that I use to check for this in my scripts is to use the licenseManager watch ownership licenses and see if the license is equivalent to "esxBasic", the host is ESXi, if both these things are true, then you are using the free version of ESXi. In my view, there is another method in which the free version does not contain the full name of some kind, but I forgot what it was. If the above solution worked for me for some time and is simple to check

Take a look at page 12, it will show the different types of licenses with ESXi.

You will need to buy at least the basic license to enable management of the VC.

On the ESXI version free PowerCLI is limited to read-only (all cmdlets Get-) operations, I'm afraid.
