  Have you looked at the article Knowledge Base, what to do if Firefox will play all of the sounds? There are many good advice on troubleshooting in there. You might have its just accidentally disabled for Firefox.

  There is also a chance it's a plugin problem. If the first article does not help, take a look at common audio problems and graphics issues.

  Step 1: Looks like the setting of the mixer for your web browser is changed. To cross check if the settings are correct, try the following steps.
  a. open browser.
  b. click on the volume icon in the taskbar.
  c. click mixer.
  d. in the list of applications, make sure that the volume icon is not silent to your web browser. If he is silent, then turn it back on.
  e. check if the problem persists.

  You can downgrade to v3.6.16 by downloading it from here: Download Firefox v3.6.16

  Uninstall the current version via Add/Remove Programs choose to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc. Then, restart and run the Setup file downloaded.

  Maybe you can consult the manual for your HP laptop. There could be a combination of keys inadvertently, you turned on is causing the problem.

  What questions to troubleshoot Firefox in Safe Mode. Have you tried? If it works properly in this configuration, one of your modules is the culprit, but judging by what you wrote, I don't think in this case somehow special.

  Check whether the sound is enabled in Internet Explorer:

  I have no sound coming from ie or chrome on any page. The sound on the laptop is fine if I play an mp3. I checked the mixer and everything is high and reactivated. I check the internet options for multi media.  I have not changed the registry. I am running windows 7 on an ASUS Ux31.

  If you checked all the habit is as mixer and the settings in muted, latest version FLASH etc, then not sure, but for IE are trying at least to launch IE addon No. mode and see if that helps. IE (without adding mode). If you get sound now and then check your add-ons you have installed, and works with IE.

  If this does not help, then check this setting (for 'normal IE):

  , (view as "icons" no categories), , [Advanced] tab scroll down to the multimedia section and make sure that 'Sounds in web pages' are checked. If it is not checked to try to delay it and , and if it is ticked, try to uncheck and then repeat check . You may need to restart IE for the change to take effect.

  If this does not help, then to the Advanced page even try clicking [advanced restore settings] and if still no joy try [reset]. Yet once, you may have to restart IE to allow changes, and you will lose any manuals "tweaks" you already have for Internet Explorer settings.

  I hope that one or the other will work.

  You have two audio drivers, which may be contradictory. And as your Intel driver is also your video driver, I would try to disable the driver Conexant HD. To do this, go back to Device Manager, select the Conexant driver, right click and select Disable (not uninstall). See if that makes a difference.

  I have a W7 crowd well running; I use VMplayer 4, later. No problem to install systems don't like XP, Ubuntu, Mint.

  Win 8 beta installs allright, but it would not recognize

  (a) the sound card is not recognized by Win 8 beta - Mint has had also a few problems, but that could be overcome by a few trial and error...

  (b) Internet through a router was not accessible - Win 8 beta software issues said: no hardware card found

  So I can't activate Win beta 8 of Microsoft.

  I installed 2 times - once as a user made, once by the recommended procedures.
