Har I nogle erfaringer?

  • Exchange/SQL - Local or NFS/NAS storage?

    I'll put up our first vSphere environment.

    Material:

    HP DL380 G6 (2xQuad processors, 16 GB memory)

    Aberdeen (VMware certified NAS) with the NFS data store

    The host systems and storage are connected with multiple 1 GB NICs.  A second host is added for redundancy and increased VM shortly.

    I have a couple of operation low production VM on that very well because we test the system.  We now plan to create our exchange and SQL vm.  My question is if it's better to put these VM on local storage or on the nfs datastore?  We could not afford the full FC SAN, but reading a lot of white papers indicating the performance of nas NFS isn't so bad.  I'm looking for some advice from real world concerning data exchange/SQL on this type of installation.  I understand that I would lose the advanced features of the nfs if I went local storage but it plans for the performance.

    Now to put this in perspective, e-mail users total attaching to the exhange server just 75... but the availability is obviously important for them.

    Advice?

    Thank you

    If you go just for a basic setup, a large store of data is very good.  It might help separate out and use two exports, or more, if you want to use etherchannel, but who is probably added complexity that you don't really need at this point.

    My process created a unique name with a timestamp in the name so no other process might have used.  And I am aware that the message does not say it is a write permissions problem, just checking the obvious things first before everyone asking for thoughts.

    When it comes to provide more details, I don't really know how much more would be appropriate because I assumed that experienced users would know that there was a wizard provided by the SQL Developer with dialog boxes... I guess I could have aired it a spreadsheet?  I'm not sure.  I will do my best to provide minute details in the future.  And your question, I realize that I forgot to say that I have tried to write to a NFS mount point.

    To this end, the problem is resolved.  NFSLock didn't work on this box.  My Linux SA started and my export was properly executed.

  • RS 5 - NFS/VMFS and RDM

    3 x vSphere 5 update 1 guests

    RS 5

    NetApp PROD = mass of FAS3240s (8.02) DR = unique FAS2040

    Our virtual cluster uses NFS data warehouses. We hired an engineer to come in and deploy SnapManager for SQL and SharePoint. During this deployment they install our servers (SQL and SharePoint farm) with ROW 4. During the installation we spun a datastore to VMFS (iSCSI) to store the mapping of RDM files on. Everything was fine.

    Recently, we have begun a deployment of RS 5 I was told that the RDM are managed natively by MRS during the recovery process. Discover, it is and it isn't. Using guests on NFS data warehouses and RDM mappings on a separate data store, we were not able to add a guest in a protection group without seeing errors due to the RDM come back with "not replicated" status, even if we can see the relationship of snapmirror for data store AND mapping ROW in the table view manager. What I've read, so that the SRM properly manage a guest with RDM, the RDM must be on the SAME data store that is located in the comments, as well as the mapping of RDM files. Since SnapDrive one will not allow you to store these mapping on a NFS datastore files, we could not accomplish a fully automated "SRM"recovery without the use of scripts customized via the SnapDrive one and SQL CLI commands."

    So here's my question. What are the pro and the con us a mixed environment on the warehouses of data running? Through testing, I set up a datastore VMFS (iSCSI) with a test prompt. I then fixed 2 RDM local in this data store and then stored the mapping of RDM files it as well. Created a group of protection without problem. Recovery went through without a problem.

    Our current facility is:

    SQLSERVER1:

    Comments = NFS Datastore 1

    RDM1 = NetApp Volume 1

    RDM2 = NetApp Volume 2

    RDM3 = NetApp Volume 3

    RDM4 = NetApp Volume 4

    Mapping of RDM files = Volume VMFS NetApp 1

    Proposed configuration:

    SQLSERVER1

    Reviews - VMFS Datastore 1

    RDM1 - VMFS Datastore Qt1/1/Lun1

    RDM2 - VMFS Datastore 1/Qt2/Lun1

    RDM3 - VMFS Datastore 1/Qt3/Lun1

    RDM4 - VMFS Datastore 1/Qt4/Lun1

    * qt = qtree

    In the present example, snapmirror would be at a volume of verses level qtree it's done now.

    All advice is appreciated.

    You can create a FLIGHT/LUN (VMFS) for your comments. Storage vMotion the prompt for the new VMFS datastore. If you wish, you can remap the ROW pointers to live under this same VMFS datastore. This is the approach I took for this scenario.

    You do snapsjmirrors of Volume or Qtree level based? Best practices say allows you to create a single FLIGHT per LUN.

    Proposed configuration:

    SQLSERVER1

    Reviews - VMFS Datastore 1 (Storage vMotion)

    RDM1 - 1 Datastore VMFS to file pointer, RDM location = / VOL1/Lun1

    RDM2 - 1 Datastore VMFS to file pointer, RDM location = / VOL2/Lun1

    RDM3 - 1 Datastore VMFS to file pointer, RDM location = / VOL3/Lun1

    RDM4 - 1 Datastore VMFS to file pointer, RDM location = / VOL4/Lun1

  • ISCSI or NFS

    Hello world

    I am deploying ESXi for a client and they are quite short on money. They need at least 2 ESXi servers in order to deploy servers in 2003. They have an exchange 2003 server, several domain controllers, and a database server. The database is a SQL database, but its current use is still quite small. Maximum memory usage is about 4 GB. I want to ask some servers ESXi with 16 GB of RAM 24GO a piece.

    My problem is that in the long run, I need a storage shared for a my phase 2 plan. I then configure VCenter and apply the company licenses to be able to VMotion and some other services. I will also add more ESXi servers around this same time for exchange 2010 and some other applications. Usually, Exchange uses a lot of I/O transactions. I saw that exchange 2010 has decreased its I/O operations by dumping many of its works in the working memory. I was wondering if I can go out with a NAS and NFS. I would use 4 Gbps NICs to a switch. If I paste them, can I have a good link with ESX4i aggregation configuration? If not, is 1 Gbit/s over a good NFS? Experiments using such a slow link instead of 4 Gb/s FC?

    If I can't go out with NFS, whereas I would have to ask a local storage large enough to hold the current servers I want to convert and create for this first phase. Then I would get SAN iSCSI for their next year that is coming.

    Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you

    Hello

    Would you recommend but using ISCSI or NFS but at these speeds "low" for the next 5 years?

    Mike Laspina has a good post on some of the differences between NFS and iSCSI, the other day.

    Have a read of his article ZFS running via NFS as a VMware store

    It is a little bit technical and focused on the opensolaris ZFS part, but the information you're looking for is especially in there.

  • Virtulize SQL on a local storage

    Guys,

    I hope I am posting this in the right place.

    I have an obligation to provide a Virtualization solution on a very tight budget.  Accordingly, I have only 2 hosts ESXi 4 with 32 GB of RAM and local storage, although I'm playing around with the idea of iSCSI and OpenFiler on an area dedicated as a shared storage solution.

    I am concerned about virtulizing SQL 2005 on this platform.  Not so much SQL but SQL running on a single host ESXi 4 with local storage (RAID 5).  I am concerned about the disk I/O between virtualized SQL server contention and other virtual machines.   There is also the question of the server SQL itself consumes resources of disk/memory of its host to the point where it would be impractical to be virtualized.

    I need to run SQL 2 applications to start with. We have a 8GB of RAM at a minimum and the other ha s a minimum requirement of 2 GB.  It will take the amount of RAM I can give to other virtual machines.

    What I've read, SQL performance is improved when you have different RAID types and different drives DBs/transaction logs.  These options are not possible with local storage.

    I'd love some opinions on whether:

    SQL running on a single ESX4i host with local storage is never a good idea

    If it is no longer acceptable to use iSCSI storage

    Thank you

    Yes, better to use ESX. Best of all - ESX4, there a lot of performance improvements, especially in iSCSI stack. Also for you it is better to use shared storage, due to a possible consolidation of your SQL server server in the future. I would use iSCSI via NFS, because it has lower overhead, resulting in greater performance for SQL. One also, I recommend you not to use some free Linux solutions like OpenFiler or FreeNAS - they are not the best options to create good and robust solutions. If you have a small budget, you can try using StarWind or Datacore.

  • Presentation of external storage as Local to the SQL virtual servers

    Hello.

    Obligatory "I'm new" and 'sorry if this is in the wrong place' withdrawals.

    I have two SQL Server virtual machines (running on ESX 3.5) which I am (at the level of the BONE) clustering for redundancy.  All their storage would come from two HP AiO servers storage or local storage of the ESX Server.  For now, we don't have VirtualCenter.

    I need to present some sort of external storage for these virtual machines that they can (a) recognize as local so I can store files .mdf for SQL server on it, and (b) which can be configured as a cluster resource, so either can be accessed in the event of another machine down.

    I tried to create a new virtual hard disk, pointing to the raw space on some of my existing storage, but "raw device mapping" is greyed out.  I guess it's because he needs a real San for gross external storage as a virtual disk local card.  I also tried new creation and extensions adding storage to the storage devices in the configuration of ESX storage.  There's no joy.

    Should I VirtualCentre or a real SAN in order to present the raw disk space to a virtual machine?  If this is not the case, how can I do?  If so, which do I need and is there some kind of fudge or skilled people getaround may suggest that fits my needs of clustered SQL Server resources?

    Thank you.

    Rikk

    Hello

    Welcome to the forums! I have a few questions and comments.

    To use a RDM in normal mode you will need a SAN/NAS/iSCSI server to get there. Since the storage of the IOA is an iSCSI SAN or a NAS you want present storage to ESX using one of these methods.  I guess that you already do using iSCSI or NFS? You are using.

    I would not use Local Storage due to problems of redundancy.

    You have space on your AiO storage to create another logical unit number?

    A RDM is a logic unit number presented to the ESX host as a data bank that is not also a VMFS.  Once the logic unit number is presented for ESX you can do a RDM or you can do a VMFS and add another VMDK to your VM and move the .mdf for the new VMDK files. Or the other method should work. You can also access the server iSCSI directly from Windows and directly access a LUN to one end.

    You have many options at this point. Which way you want to go?

    Best regards

    On the database server. The BFILE column value is a file descriptor that refers to a file that needs to be I / O'ed by the database server Oracle process if necessary.

    If this fact file handle refers to a file on the application server (middle level), what is the process of the server Oracle to make its way in this app server and crack open the file system access (illegally) this file?

    BFILE must be a file that is accessible by the server. (Yes, he can physically reside on another server, and be shared via Samba or NFS for example - but it is not always just a robust solution)

    Note that the APEX is PL/SQL. There's nothing strange or unusual to the APEX. The APEX is a suite of code PL/SQL and other database objects (such as tables and indexes and views). I often met the perception that APEX is slightly different and is running outside the database. Not true. The APEX is 100% PL/SQL.

    What's wrong?

    If DBCC CHECKDB or CHECKTABLE reports an error (which should be the Msg 2533), the page is corrupted or an incorrect page. You must restore from a backup to solve the problem. If you cannot restore from a backup, use DBCC CHECKDB repair options. To find the cause of this problem, you must use techniques as you would with other errors of corruption of database including: search for system-level or hardware problems (a tool such as SQLIOSIM may be useful to do so. SQLIOSIM is supplied with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 and requires no separate download) make sure you have the PAGE_VERIFY = CHECKSUM database option turned on. While one can still encounter the Error Msg 605 with active checksum (E.g. "Scribbler" problem or incorrect page provided by the IO system), allowing the checksum can provide irrefutable proof that the page has been changed incorrectly in the IO system. try to restore a backup of the database that you know who won't be 'clean' (CHECKDB errors) and backups of the transaction log that you cover the time when the error was encountered. If you can "replay" this problem of restoring a backup of database 'clean' and the transaction will connect then contact Microsoft Technical Support for assistance.

    Additional information:

    Everything I've read, these errors usually indicate some sort of database corruption.  However when I run DBCC CHECKDB on the database on the source server, it is up to perfectly don't own... None detected corruption.  In fact, this server hosts 8 different databases.  Departure from all the correct DB on the source server, none of them will restore however to a new server using one of the methods above.  I'm having a hard time to believe that each of them could be corrupted when they show absolutely no indication of a problem.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Try to make the backup and restore via SQLCMD (or via a query in SQL Server MS window).

    The backup will be the following (obviously, change "MaBase" and "D:\BACKUPS" to some database and the location you wish to save - just using for example):

    BACKUP DATABASE MyDatabase

    TO DISK = 'D:\BACKUPS\MyDatabase.bak. '

    WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT,.

    NAME = 'Database MyDatabase - Full Backup',

    NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10, SKIP

    Copy your backup to the other server and file make:

    RESTORE the DATABASE to MyDatabase

    FROM DISK = 'E:\Backups\MyDatabase.bak' WITH FILE = 1,

    GO to "MyDatabase_Data" to "E:\SQLDATA\MyDatabase_Data.mdf,"

    GO to "MyDatabase_Log" to "E:\SQLLOG\MyDatabase_Data.ldf,"

    NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 REPLACE

    Again, change your names and locations in function.

    If this does not work, try to restore a database by third-party tools. You can find them in Google. If you don't want to spend the time to research, you can try a tool SQL Server Recovery Toolbox. All the details about this program on the link. http://www.oemailrecovery.com/sql_repair.html
