Exchange/SQL - Local or NFS/NAS storage?

I'll put up our first vSphere environment.

Material:

HP DL380 G6 (2xQuad processors, 16 GB memory)

Aberdeen (VMware certified NAS) with the NFS data store

The host systems and storage are connected with multiple 1 GB NICs.  A second host is added for redundancy and increased VM shortly.

I have a couple of operation low production VM on that very well because we test the system.  We now plan to create our exchange and SQL vm.  My question is if it's better to put these VM on local storage or on the nfs datastore?  We could not afford the full FC SAN, but reading a lot of white papers indicating the performance of nas NFS isn't so bad.  I'm looking for some advice from real world concerning data exchange/SQL on this type of installation.  I understand that I would lose the advanced features of the nfs if I went local storage but it plans for the performance.

Now to put this in perspective, e-mail users total attaching to the exhange server just 75... but the availability is obviously important for them.

Advice?

Thank you

If you go just for a basic setup, a large store of data is very good.  It might help separate out and use two exports, or more, if you want to use etherchannel, but who is probably added complexity that you don't really need at this point.

    Hello

    I would like to know the best procedure to connect to the NAS storage of ESXi host 5. I am able to connect to the NAS storage according to the screenshots listed in the link below.

    http://www.tintri.com/blog/2011/11/connecting-vSphere-to-NFS-the-easy-way/

    But, I saw different configurations in the past where port dedicated VMkernel is assigned to NAS and all storage goes into network 10 G. I try to do the same and created a VMkernel for NAS port. But I don't think that traffic is going over there as it is not used at all.

    I gave the IP address of the ESXi server on the NAS box to get access. I couldn't give address IP VMkernel sideways NAS. How can I make use of this IP VMKernel dedicated NFS storage?

    I want to implement the best way to pass NAS 10 G network traffic. In addition, How can I test if storage traffic crosses VMkernel port?

    Suggestions needed.

    Virtualinfra is right that you must use a different subnet for NFS traffic. You masked the IP range, so I don't see what you use, but make sure that the vmkernel and storage using a single subnet, not the management subnet. If you get an error, your use of a subnet that goes out the default gateway of the management port, or that you are using the same subnet.

    I wrote a few articles on the use of NFS with vSphere: http://wahlnetwork.com/2012/04/19/nfs-on-vsphere-a-few-misconceptions/

    Also, make sure that the vmnic can route traffic on that subnet, as in the case of the use of VLANs.

    Welcome to the forums - it is not possible to use the NAS/NFS for a VM Cluster on hosts - a VM cluster on hosts requires the use of RDMs supportΘes only on VMFS warehouses of data residing on a SAN LUN

  • How can I migrate an ESXi host since a vDS in a vSwitch with NAS storage on vDS

    I need to move some on a vDS esxi hosts to a standard vSwitch to move a new vCenter ESXi hosts

    I have two 10 GB network adapters that manage the ports VM, NAS storage and vmotion.

    Is there a documented procedure to move a vDS in a vSwitch, particularly for migration from NAS storage to a vSwitch?

    Thank you

    Tom

    No, you will need to do this on a per-host basis.

    I really recommend doing one by one, not in a hurry and checking all the networking before you proceed to the next step. Example: after migrating the vmkernel interfaces, check on a ssh connection to the host if it can vmkping the NAS. Before you move all the virtual machines on the host to the switch std, move one and check if the VM networking continues to function. This will prevent errors and downtime.

  • Lightroom loses the files on a network (NAS) storage disk

    I use Lightroom 5.7 on a PC under Windows 7 64-bit.

    A couple of weeks, I've installed a network (NAS) storage system as I was running out of HDD space.  I created a logical drive on the NAS for the Photos.  In Lightroom, I dragged photo on the new drive files.  Backup and catalogue files remained on the internal hard drive.

    My photos are arranged in chronological order, in directories (years) and its subdirectories (days, named using the format "2014_12_31").

    Since files on the NAS, Lightroom has been giving me some error messages in the develop module, that it cannot find the files.  Previews discovers very well in the library module, and the files are still there when I look for them in Windows Explorer.  The errors do not occur in the directories subdirectories integers (years) (days) - only some files in the respective subdirectories are affected.  And only the files of 2015 seem to have the problem.  And, when I drag the directories back on my internal hard drive (again, within Lightroom), the errors disappear and everything works fine.

    See the instructions on how to connect back to Lightroom for NAS: Adobe Lightroom - find folders and files moved or missing

    1 must. the NAS box support NFS?

    2 must. the NAS box be in the VMware hardware compatibility list?

    As long as it supports NFS v3 over TCP, it should work.  Make sure that the version is in the card before you buy it.

  • Why my static PL/SQL within SQL local variable is not transformed in space in the shared pool?

    Hello everyone,

    Oracle version: 12.1.0.1.0 - 64 bit

    OS: Linux Fedora Core 17 X86_64

    Description of the problem:

    I'm reading an interesting book of online oracle named: SQL in PL/SQL

    On page 11, it reads the following:

    In the absence of a compilation error, the PL/SQL compiler generates an equivalent statement of SQL regular text and stores this with the generated machine code. This instruction uses placeholders where the embedded SQL statement uses identifiers that have been resolved in the PL/SQL unit.

    What I understand of this (please, correct me if I'm wrong) is that whenever I write some static/embedded statement SQL within a PL/SQL block in which there are a few local variables in PL/SQL, and then final generated SQL statement (after resolution of identifier) will include placeholders (bind variables) instead of these identifiers the PL/SQL.

    I just wanted to see this in practice, so I made the following test:

    Test case:

    SQL> connect / as sysdba
    SQL> alter system flush shared_pool

    system altered

    So, normally, after execution of the foregoing the shared_pool on my development environment is now empty.

    And then I run the following PL/SQL block

    <<b>>
    declare
        depid hr.employees.department_id%type := 100;
        cnt   pls_integer := 0;
    begin
        select
            count(*)
        into
            b.cnt
        from
            hr.employees t1
        where
            t1.department_id = b.depid;
    end;
    /
    --
    --
    column sql_id new_value sqlid_saved;
    --
    select
        v1.sql_id
    from
        v$sql v1
    where
        v1.sql_text like '%t1.department_id = b.depid%';
    --
    --
    select
        v1.sql_text
    from
        v$sql v1
    where
        v1.sql_id = '&sqlid_saved';

    And the result was:

    SQL_ID
    -------------
    687dxvsmrwm9z
    g17tjb3f8t94y

    6 old: v1.sql_id = "& sqlid_saved"
    6 new: v1.sql_id = "g17tjb3f8t94y".

    SQL_TEXT
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    < < b > > declare depid hr.employees.department_id%type: = 100;     CNT pls_in
    SEB: = 0; Start select count (*) in b.cnt of
    T1 hr. Employees where t1.department_id = b.depid; end;

    SQL >

    What I don't understand is the main part of the SQL_TEXT I put in red.

    Instead of

    T1.department_id = b.depid

    I expected to see something like

    T1.department_id = : B

    In other words, some bind variable, because depid is a local variable inside my PL/SQL block used in integrated/static SQL statement, so it must be converted to a reserved space in the shared pool instead of the original identifier.

    You kindly could you tell me what I misunderstood?

    Thanks in advance

    > But once again no variable binding in the stored/parsed SQL statement. That's what I don't understand.

    Submitted by PL/SQL SQL is "normalized", which includes (among other things) convert uppercase. Your query on v$ sql is looking for '% hr.employees% '.

  • How to remove the local drive of the storage profile

    I use 5.1.1 with last vcenter vcloud. My problem is that my profile of single storage includes local disk. (when I click on * all properties in vcloud)

    I went to vsphere client to vcenter (Home > inventory > data warehouses and the cluster data store) I see ESXi local disk. is there a way to delete it without deleting the content of the discs? the vcloud vms will go to local disk? concern is not shared between hosts. Thank you

    You create profiles of storage for data storage you want to use.

    First, assign user-defined storage capacities:

    1. Home-> inventory-> data and data Clusters store warehouses
    2. R.Click the data store you want to use-> Assign User-Defined storage capacities
    3. Click new... and set a name and a Description
    4. Repeat for all warehouses of data to include in the PVDC

    Second, to create profiles of VM storage

    1. Home-> management-> VM storage profiles
    2. Create a VM storage profile
    3. Name and assign storage capacities of the list defined by the user that you created
    4. IMPORTANT: Select the VM storage profile (buttons at the top of the window)

    Third, VCD storage profiles update

    1. Manage and control-> them vCenters
    2. r.Click vCenter and refresh the storage profiles (may take a few minutes)

    Fourth, edit PVDC

    1. Manage and monitor--> provider TDC-> open your PVDC
    2. Storage Profiles tab
    3. Add new profile storage
    4. Remove the * any storage profile (disable and then delete r.click)
  • The pictures/catalogue on a NAS storage

    Hi all

    I have a Macbook Pro on my network and also a desktop computer. I want to do is to store my photos on my NAS and run the catalog from there, if I can share on both computers. However when I try to point to a network directory that LR has told me he is not able to do. Is there a way to get around this? I would like to be able to store on the server and work from there.

    See you soon

    LR does not support the good catalog storage on network volumes, but you can store photos on network volumes.  There are two solutions of workaround for the restriction of catalogue:

    -Keep your photos on a network volume and use Dropbox (or similar) to synchronize the catalog file between your computers.

    -Create an image disk writable on the network drive and store your catalog in this disk image.

    There are discussions in this forum and the official feedback Adobe forum giving more details on them. No work around is officially supported.  I have tried both methods, but I feel like the other threads, is that they could be fragile.   So make sure that you have reliable, tested backups of your catalog.

  • Cannot use local shared with replica storage of SSD

    So I had my environment from view for a while and everything works fine, but I have a question on how discovers works with the local replica SSD disks.  I read in the forums and in the document architecture and design if you use a local SSD to store your replicas (that will give you a performance gain), you cannot have your host in a cluster, thus renouncing HA and all the features that come with in a cluster of ESXi.

    However, I meet me a further restriction that I couldn't find any mention of in the forums or documentation, namely that you cannot store the clones in a shared storage if you have a replica on the local disk.  Whenever I got to the stage of commissioning and selected a FC LUN shared as the storage for the linked clones container, the pool would tell me that there not available and there no validation.  However, if I create a LUN that ONLY the host which I use to store the replica on the SSD has access to, then the commissioning is fine.  So my question is this: Why can't place clones related on the shared with a local replica disk storage?  I understand that I will not be able to use the features of the HA, but I would rather just a LUN shared for all clones related to the ease of administration (instead of having to create one for each host).  If someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong or explain to me why this is the case, it would be great.

    OK, I found the documentation indicating that "If clone related data warehouses are shared, the replica data store must be shared. Replicas can reside on a store of local data only if you configure clones all connected on warehouses of local data on the same ESX host. "Who is on page 14 of the document storage considerations see here: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/view_storage_considerations.pdf. However, it does not explain why this is, he said only that it is so.

    So as a result of this requirement, it is logical that linked clones on a present at a single ESXi host LUN would support, but without link clones on a LUN present at multiple ESXi hosts.

  • Local VMs of shared storage

    I have ESXi free license and create several virtual machines production in the local data store of ESXi, we complete installing vCenter server and add this host, proceed to the storage configuration and connect the ESXi too, we get the new vSphere license Enterprise liked.

    Someone would tell me how to move the virtual machines in the local data store of ESXi for shared storage, we need constantly to these machines, please?

    Best regards

    With the Enterprise Plus license, that you can live migrate virtual machine to a new storage. All you have to do to be able to use "Storage VMotion" is to ensure that the ESXi hosts have access to the shared storage. Take a look at for example http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/04/02/storage-vmotion-exploring-the-next-version-of-esxvcenter/ which has a screen shots, how it works.

  • Cannot delete entry local old ESX host storage

    HY all!

    We changed one of our esx hosts (say name = ESX - A1) with a more recent material, the server also called ESX - A1.

    These where the steps...

    1.) former host in maintenance mode

    2.) deleted from our cluster HA.

    former host stop 3.)

    4. change material)

    5.) poweron new host with same name ESX - A1

    Everithing was very good, except for one...

    I still can't see the local storage of old ESX - A1 in the inventory of data store and the option 'delete' is unavailable (dimmed).

    Thanks for any help!

  • Local replicas on SSD storage

    After reading the view administration guide, I'm a little confused when it comes to using SSDS in sight.  I currently store my offices view a shared IBM XIV data store.  What I read, his ideal to place your replicas on a SSD and have your clones related to your regular rotation drive.  After reading the review (page 91) Administrator's guide, is possible to store even a replica on a data store and your clones linked on another (especially for a non persistent floating pool)?  My understanding is that you must have a replica for your clones on each data store that your linked clones are related.

    Thanks for the clarification!

    Yes, it is possible to stored the clone linked on the SSD and sata data store data and etc. also please take note this local SSD storage means that the virtual machine will be when the host is not available.
