SRM on virtual machines

Just try to make sure that I understand.

I have SRM between 2 sites and protect sites, using ABR, both SRM and databases servers are on Virtual Machines, but not the same computers virtual.

If the site a defective so MRS. Server and database to site A fails, I would be still able raise the machines in the site A to Site B because the MIS servers are paired and each of them knows how to start the machines of the other site?  So basically, there is nothing wrong with what the Manager SRM and database on a virtual machine?

Fix.

There is communication between the two and it is updated when you, for example to create a new machine on a store of data protected.

I would recommend the database and the server MRS virtual machines.

I really recommend doing most of the VMs.

  • VC / SRM running virtual machines

    Hi guys,.

I was wondering everyone experience the performance of VC and SRM on the same Virtual Machine?

    Thank you

    DC

vCenter and SRM run very well together.  The only concern I have is with the size of the environment, and I do not have this guideline to the host/guest count to offer.  The drawback is that you would limit your vCenter for 32-bit server, which also limits the ability of memory.  Location of your database is probably more important.

That said, it is quite easy to move SRM services and/or database on a new virtual machine if you opt for later.  Important files on the SRM server are in the SSL Directory.

  • Change of virtual machines managed by SRM for VR in an event of DR

    Hello

I have a virtual machine that is being replicated using replication vSphere + I configured a recovery SRM for virtual machine plan is managed by SRM.

    Screen Shot 2015-03-20 at 9.04.47 am.png

    In a DR situation:

    • To recover a virtual machine that is managed by VR everything I have to do is to connect to vCenter to your web site of DR via vSphere client, then click on recover.
    • To recover a virtual machine that is managed by MRS. all you need is to get a full vsphere to your DR site that has the plugin SRM installed before you can retrieve customer.

    My question:

Suffice it to say at an event of DR MRS on the DR site was dismantled (so I couldn't recover virtual machines managed by SRM) but I can connect to the Web from vSphere client and retrieve virtual machine managed by VR, is it possible to manually change the virtual machines managed by SRM, so they are managed by new RV?

    See you soon

    Hello

There are internal interface that allows you to do. Please contact VMware support team.

Go get the current "recovered by" value:

    https://vrms_address:8043 / mob /? me = Recovery Manager & method = HmsRecoveryManagerGetGroupsRecoverySolution & vmodl = 1

To reset the value "recovered by" RV:

    https://vrms_address:8043 / mob /? me = Recovery Manager & method = HmsRecoveryManagerSetGroupsRecoverySolution & vmodl = 1

Call the method after replacing ME with the GID... replication value and clear the value (empty string) for the recoveredBy property.

To retrieve the value, GID-... - look at the names of the replica files in target or check data warehouses the table GroupEntity in DB VRMS. To get prompt SQL embedded DB VRMS - use

    / opt/VMware/vpostgres/Current/bin/psql vrmsdb - U

Please note that the foregoing is not officially supported and may change with the different versions of the VR.

  • SRM 5.5 - vSphere replication - error: impossible to reverse the replication for the Virtual Machine. A snapshot operation cannot be performed

Hi all, we have just run a test DR failover of a couple of virtual machines in our protected our failover site and all site swung perfectly, two virtual machines came online and all applications work well. However when we cam to r-eprotect machines virtual, we get some errors.

One of the virtual machines seems to have lived the reprotect end process, it is still running, but has not moved to 89% for some time. The virtual machine has a couple of grand (a little less than 2 TB) VMDK. slow progress is just a consequence of the large VMDK?

More worrisome is the virtual machine which don't reprotect at all. It generates an error whenever I click on the "Restore" button (error: impossible to reverse the replication for the Virtual Machine.) A snapshot operation can not be performed).

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Andy

Finally got to the bottom of this. The issue was that reprotect SRM work was trying to dispel any snapshots that were taken on the computer object virtual destination in VMWare, but could not clean snapshots.

The reason why snapshots would not consolidate was because it was snapshots of temporary VEEAM who in fact any snapshot file listed in the VSAN data store. So when we looked through the browser data store, no snapshot file existed in the virtual computers folder. Trying a manual removal also failed.

To fix this, we created a snapshot of the virtual machine in the original data center (note is the engine to the bottom of the virtual machine), this effect was to get rid of the 'fade' snapshot that was visible in the Snapshot Manager that VEEAM backup had left behind. Once this had disappeared, the reprotect back to DCA worked perfectly.

  • Replication of vSphere SRM - replica of the lack of virtual machines

    Hello

I use SRM with vSphere replication and all my virtual machines are properly replicated from my site for my recovery.site as you can see:

    Capture10.png

My problem is that I don't see all the replica of the VMs replicated in the inventory of the recovery site:

    Capture2.PNG

So when I was looking for in the web client vSphere replication monitor, I saw that all the virtual machines that are in the inventory of the recovery site are all managed by SRM. And all virtual machines managed by VR finally does not appear in the inventory.

    Capture3.PNG

Someone at - it never I have this problem or know the solution?

    Concerning

Hello and welcome to the community of VMware

The behavior you describe is planned. Between VR and SRM, is SRM work to create what is called 'space reserved VM' on the recovering site.

If replicate you a virtual machine using vSphere replication but skip protection by SRM, there is no virtual machine being recorded on the recovering Site until you run the RV GUI recovery operation.

Can I ask you why do you need to see the virtual machine on the recovering site? Even if it is there, you are not able to turn on.

  • SRM failover for virtual machines but not all VMDK disks to include

Hi, I have a number of VMs that need failover protection, but not all the VMDK disks must be included when switching to the opposite site. For example, a virtual machine can have 3 discs and players only need 1 & 2, switch to the recovery site - SRM can be configured to ignore the 3rd disc?

    Thank you

I was not aware of a fact that replied vmdk cannot be detached. I think that this is normal.

Why you are replicating data, you do not need? You can place these VMDK on LUN not replicated?

  • Manual removal placeholder VMs when the protected virtual machine is removed

We run SRM 5.5. We had some VMs protected, we need more, so they have been removed from the drive (I can't). When I found out about it, I went in SRM and removed the protection for these deleted virtual machines. Most of the VMS placeholder have been correctly removed by this procedure, however, I see still 2 VMs of space reserved for virtual computers that no longer exist. No idea why only these 2 (about 6) were not cleaned.

My question: can I remove manually just these VMs placeholder? They are not in any group of protection, or the stimulus plan. And the protected virtual machines which correspond to these placeholders no longer exist. It's as if they are zombie placeholders. :-)

There is no problem with me removing the VMs placeholder manually, y at - it?

    Hello

Yes, its safe to delete the place holder vm.  Make sure the source VM is not protected and no replication is configured. Restart the SRM service.

I need to run a script that will update the virtual machine IP to DNS server.  I intend to use the dns_update.cmd.

    1. can I create stimulus steps that are specific to the site?

    2. don't VMware SRM SDK provides what API s to determine the name of the Site?

    TIA,

    > 1. Can I create stimulus steps that are specific to the site?

SRM provides environment variables to scripts step command that will allow you to do. See variable environment for the ordering steps in the administration guide for more information on variables.

The key variable is the variable 'VMware_VC_Host '. You can use this variable in your script to perform different actions depending on which VC you get to.

    > 2. VMware SRM SDK provides APIs that s to determine the name of the Site?

Yes, I'm not sure why you would do that? Typically, you call the SRM API to a stage of order recovery plan. You can share what you intend to use these methods for?

  • 5.8 SRM - Transparent list Machines after a Test

Hi, I was hoping someone could answer to that?

I want to use SRM 5.8 with EMC MirrorView for ABR to see if this configuration was 'good', I had MirrorView reproduce a single data store that contains the files vmdk for 5 virtual desktops.  At the time, EMC Unisphere showed that the primary and secondary images are Active and in harmony, respectively.

Then I install the SRM part and then ran a test.  The test was good, so I then ran a Clean Up.  The Web Client vSphere shows that the Clean Up has been successful.  However, the server inventory target vCenter, I see my 5 virtual desktop listed there. I do not mean that registration of these 5 introduce yourself as "grey" but more transparent.  The transparent icon next to each of the guests to show up with a yellow lightning bolt.

Is this normal?  Should the cleaning withdrew these?  I hesitate to just, right-click and delete these jobs of the vCenter target.  I get a warning that they are managed by RS, but the delete is only available for me.  In earlier versions of SRM (at the time of 4.0), I don't think I remember seeing these machines on the vCenter target after a test/clean upwards.

The two sites are running 5.5U2, ESXi 5.5U2, SRM 5.8 vCenter.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

  • Placeholder Virtual Hardware Version different from the virtual machine active

    Hi all

This is my first post to the community, so please be nice :-)

I'm looking for after an ESXi U2 with MRS 5.5 5.1 environment and I have a problem I hope you can help me with?

After an update of the all virtual V7 and V8 to V9 material throughout the environment recently, I noticed that is not reflected in the placeholder SRM on those virtual machines information placeholder. I hope it's just an aesthetic issue, but I don't want to get into a situation of DR and find that it is a question then (or it is systematic of a bigger problem!). I know I can do a test failure to confirm, but I'm not in that position at the moment as the company policy says I can only do the test during a maintenance window that is not for a while...

I thought that the easiest option would be to "Recreate a Placeholder" in [groups] but this is grayed out on (which I suppose is because the protection status is "OK")... Protection status gives me some comfort, but this gap in information gives me a bad feeling...

Your help and your advice would be appreciated!

    Crispy

Hi crispy, welcome in the community :-)

What happens if you go to the Protection Group, select a virtual machine, right-click and remove Protection, and then set it up again?

These procedures will remove the placeholder VM and recreate without doubt using new hardware version... but do not forget that the ESXi host at the target site must be compatible with the new version of hardware.

  • Virtual machines showing several times

    Hey guys,.

Anyone know why I see VMs appear repeatedly in vCOPS?  The only thing I could think is that cloning could cause that... but I was not cloning.  Any thoughts?  vCOPS Enterprise 5.7

It looks like you use a solution of mirror/replication such as MRS. vC Ops will pick up the placeholder of virtual machines in a scenario of MRS and fill them, causing duplicate scenario you describe. Are you running SRM or mirror/replication solution?

I want to look at the resources using the environmental component of the custom user interface. Check the vCenter IDs, "-vm", which will refine to you if it of a clone or not. Name is right, you have to look at the virtual machine single - and UUID to see if there are similarities, and if so, which. Also, check the date column creation to see when they were added, this will tell you when any chance happened which caused the resources "duplicated".

  • can I add additional VMDK virtual machine that is already protected with vSphere 5.1 replication?

    Hello

We're uaing SRM 5.1 to protect a virtual computer by using the replication of vSphere. now, we want to increase the size of one of the vmdk dirve. can we increase the size of the disk? and if we don't, then, can we add an another VMDK to this virtual machine?

What is the procedure to protect that additional newly added VMDK?

    Thank you

    Hello

Please see the following topics in vSphere replication 5.1 documentation (replication reconfiguration).

Yes, you can add an another VMDK to a replicated VM. Replication goes into an error state, and you must reconfigure replication and include the newly added to replicate disk.

  • Replying to a virtual machine within the same site

I try to install vSphere replication v5.1.  I do this without SRM, but just the OVF appliance (s).  We currently have 8 guests distributed between two groups.  We have a vCenter control all this, and all is listed in a Data Center.  The second group is in our DR site and has different storage mapped to it.  I try to use vSphere replication as a means to keep our important VM replicated to our centre of DR disaster.  Is it possible to do so in the only current configuration?

I'm having a hard time comes to work.  I have deployed two replication OVF devices and I'm stuck trying to replicate a virtual machine actually.  It gives me an error that the data object is not found.  I thought that I needed to 'Connect' from the local site to the remote site, but since this is all a time installing vCenter, I get an error indicating it cannot connect to itself.

Is what I'm trying to do possible?  If not, could you let me know what I need to change to make it work properly.  Thank you.

    Hello

The scenario you describe is supported - you can replicate virtual machines from one host to another within the same VC.

    To do this:

-you will need to deploy vSphere 5.1 replication for a VC and no specific host

-VR requires VC 5.1. If you liked VC - standalone VR will not work. If you have more recent VC, for example 5.5, you need RV 5.5

-For replication within the VC even you don't need to link to the target site.

-Simply select the computer virtual you want to replicate, when you opened a session in vSphere Web Client connected to the VC, point to the same location - must be available in the list, and select the appropriate data store and move through the wizard.

    Kind regards

  • PowerCLI script for the deployment of virtual machines via the model using customizations comments

Hello... I hope someone can give me a script that will do the following:

    (1) provision VMs in vCenter template (I need 125 + VMs created in the next day or two)

    (2) use the existing customizations of comments in vCenter

    (3) let me enter data warehouses available to be created on the virtual machines.  Example: I want that VMs on warehouses of specific data as LUN2, LUN5, LUN6, LUN12, LUN1, etc...  However, the script must have the ability to know when a data store is near the threshold of capacity, say 90%, so it can use one of the other warehouses available, identified in the script... similar to storage profiles.  We still have to adopt profiles storage but plan to do so once upgraded us to v5.1 in the next month or two.  We hope that this will help us keep our replicated LUN more organized during the use of SRM and copy to remote groups, our team of storage's configuration on 3PAR.

Additional information: I will use 2 styles... Windows XP and Win7.  Their respective sizes are 40 and 60 GB due to all applications for stable DR.  Data warehouses are ea 500 GB.

Please let me know if additional information is necessary... Thank you!!!

    Charles

No, unfortunately you cannot specify a folder like this.

    You'll have to do a

    $folder = get-file-name WinXP

    New-VM-$folder file...

Remove the line of New - VM WhatIf switch if you really want to start creating virtual machines.
