State of material for ESXi host - unknown?

Hello

We use the IBM System x 3650 M3 for enforcement of a vSphere Server 5.

We see that all sensors (except CPU) CIM are shown as unknown.  Of the IBM IMM, it reports no system error.

Us have reset and update these sensors but still get the same result.

Your opinion is requested.

Have you installed the VIB customized for IBM hardware?

  • Create notification of a particular hardware for ESXi host problem?

    Hello

One of our 5.1 ESXi hosts is constantly a hardware problem (with hardware alert status).

We would like to ask for your opinion

    (1) if we create a notification, should we use 'host' alarm?

    (2) is it possible to send a notification to the staff for this particular host with error alarm "host" other than other ESXi hosts (i.e. send to Tony and Stephen for ESXi host A Harware problem BUT only sent to Tony for another hardware ESXi hosts problem)?

    Your opinion is requested.

    Hello

No, there is no option to select specific host in a cluster. When you set the alarm, it is fixed for the whole army in the cluster.

  • Install the HBA drivers for ESXi hosts

We currently have a plan to install a new system with our spare essentials vCenter license, Emulex HBA cards in the DELL gear that we will make our ESXi hosts.

How to configure adapters HBAS in ESXi, can we recommend has someone already installed drivers Emulex HBA in an ESXi host?

Defining the ESXi host should not be a problem, but it is just to install the drivers in ESXi I'm stumped.

What version of ESXi, you install? Check the VMware HCL for IO devices and if you HBA is compatible, try to do a default install and maybe the ESXi will recognize and load the drivers without having to do any additional setup.

  • The benefits of enabling LDAP authentication for ESXi hosts?

    Hello

We have been and need to justify the advantages and disadvantages of joining ESXi hosts to Active Directory?

    Thanks 4 your help.

I see a benefit for sure you can assign complete administrative privileges to individual users in a group. If you assume a group of 10 directors of ESX, individual users can connect to the host via LDAP. Will they make changes or crash the system, you will know who did it. You can follow the verification very easily using this method. Otherwise, everyone will connect as root, and we do not know who is to blame when something crashed, etc.

It's pretty easy to join the ESXi host in AD and I don't see any problem that I respect. It is individual decision whether to implement or not.

  • LDAP authentication for ESXi hosts

    Hi all

I want to authenticate ESXi hosts only against an AD domain and I discovered a few procedures already.

I have a doubt on one point: is - this required to join each ESXi to the domain? Does this mean that I need to create an AD for each ESXi object.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Daniele

I believe all you need to do is create a DNS pointing to the ESXi host record and make sure your ESXi host name is a COMPLETE (host.domain.com) domain name.

  • Linux for ESXi host hash

    Hi all

I wonder if the hash of password linux can be used as a hash of password ESXi?

Comment please if someone has done this or have an idea of the approach to this subject.

    Thank you

Yes, there is currently a bug of security ESX(I) 4.1 (ESX and ESXi) and the encryption of password of pam_unix module uses "A" versus "MD5". Front of vSphere 4.1, MD5 was the default and apparently something changed which caused his default a weaker encryption algorithm.

VMware KB article was finally produced by VMware after a member of the community identified this security hole. Here's a blog article I wrote which provides more information - http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2010/07/esxi-41-major-security-issue.html

If you enable md5, then you can certainly copy the hash of/etc/shadow to your ESXi host, even if I think you're just trying to get the password is encrypted using md5 versus which is solved by editing just the pam module as described in the article.

  • How to reach esxi host 5 on storage area network

I have a Dell PS6000E on my network.  I would like to create a volume on it and use it as a shared storage for a new configuration of esxi5 with 2 hosts.  The PS6000 already contains 2 volumes in use by other servers (physical).  To access the PS6000 via my regular local network hosts.  Is this possible, and is there a documentation on how to put in place?

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - I guess you access the PS6000E are configured for iSCSI or NAS/NFS, you will be able to access as shared storage long ESXi hosts can reach the unit. Because ESXi hosts will not be able to share the LUNS in use by other servers, you're going to create a new LUN for ESXi hosts. This storage of ESXi - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-50-storage-guide.pdf - guide that has information on how to configure your ESXi servers to access the storage.

  • Manage an ESXi host using vCenter Server?

I understand it is possible and requires of the specific licenses for ESXi hosts, even if I find information on the VMWare site a bit confused as to what I need exactly. We have-

    1 License Server Standard 4 x vCenter

4 x vSphere Enterprise license 4 (who manage our ESX 4 hosts this site)

3 (and soon 4) remote sites that have the same server ESXi

I would like to be able to manage ESXi host using vCenter as well, is this possible with what we have? If this isn't the case, can someone direct me as to what it takes?

    Thank you

You need the standard by CPU socket for each host license to add to vCenter.

You can always create a separate environment and get the Essentials Bundle (up to 3 guests max) for $500:

    http://store.VMware.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=displayPage&env=base&locale=en_US&siteid=VMware&ID=ProductDetailsPage&ProductID=126843700&RESID=psfyPAoBAlkAACQ2y-kAAAAX&rests=1277824287882

So you should have 2 vCenter servers.

  • 6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

  • Why historicalInterval is NULL for ESXi 5.0.0 build-504890 (no stats PastDay)?

    Hello

I noticed that for our guests (ESXi 5.0.0 build-504890) of ESXi historicalInterval PerformanceManager property is not set (e.g. NULL). that is, there is no statistics 'Last day' in terms of vSphere client.

But according to the vSphere Web Services SDK Programming Guide :

ESXi servers also set a unique historical range (PerformanceManager.historicalInterval) that defines the overall performance data.  This system-defined performance range specifies aggregated data collection every 300 seconds for each counter. You cannot change the intervals of performance on an ESXi server.

What is the problem with our guests?

P.S. these hosts are managed by vCenter

My guess - the parameter is basically ignored with a default installation.  ESXi don't include all the data, but only to pass his stats in real-time to vCenter.

One time, I wrote on the extension of local performance on ESXi hosts data - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/extending_performance_data.php.  With this method, you could get up to 36 hours of a locally stored data value.  I guess you could do it again with ESXi, in which case the setting would then get used.  Why it is there in the first place, I'm not sure.  I don't remember if early ESX version were able to store more data in real time on the spot.

  • One of the ESXi host 3 no HW Compatible for ESXi 6 upgrade?

    Hello

There are 3 DELL servers (2 of them are running R530 and 1 is executed R900).

When attempting to upgrade these 5.5 ESXi hosts to ESXi 6, we find that the R900 is no longer supported.

Wonder what is the best way for us to do - keep using ESXi 5.5 or level 2 of them to ESXi 6 and leave remaining on an ESXi 5.5?   We have no intention to replace the R900 in the near future.

    Thank you

If all three hosts are part of the ESXi Cluster, then you must do all the guests at the same version level. Therefore, keep all the on ESXi 5.5

But if you use these host as a standalone ESXi host then you can upgrade the host to ESXi 6 two and let R900 on ESXi 5.5
