Storage Server

Simple question

I ran downstairs to the storage that is used to run my virtual machine environment, rather than lengthen my SAN, (currently using 4 HP 4300's) is it possible to buy a dinner server, lets say a HP DL380, out hard drives and RAM max and use it as a poor team SAN?

All advice is appreciated.

Hi Blu,

Simple answer, Yes.

Simply install FreeNas or Openfiler and create iSCSI LUNS and add them to your host or create NFS shares and mount them as stores of data on your host computer.

I do not personally know the HP 4300 systems, but a quick google says they are not CF so you talk yet about networked storage not FC so it may not be quite as poor man... the two options above are free (the DL380 isn't :-))

Good luck

Chris

  • Server 2012 - storage server repair file error volume system

    Hey guys,.

I'm up late panic hoping someone might have an answer.

We have a file server, 2012 running storage server. One of the volumes reported an error so I have planned some time tonight to perform a repair on it.

After reading good things about 2012 chkdsk I thought it would be a quick process, however after some further reading, it seems you need to run chkdsk from the command line by specifying the option spotfix for the quickest fix.

I stupidly he run from Server Manager by clicking with the right button on the volume and selecting the option "repair the file system error.

It is on a volume of 5.5 to data that is accessed by a large number of users that will start to connect to 6 hours time.

Managed server showed the repair had obtained 13% after about an hour, but has not changed for some time, so I guess that Server Manager had frozen, so I closed and opened again. I can see the process is still ongoing, but the Server Manager no longer shows a progress bar (just a red bar to show the volume is locked.

Anyone has an idea how I can get up again the progress bar, or know any way to show the status of the repair running?

    Thank you

    Dave

  • migrate the file to the Storage Server 2008 Server

As a result of a server crash, I was forced to temporarily use a desktop as a network file and print server.

I installed W2K8 and saved the folders and files recovered from the wreck of the original server, which had been virtualized using VMware.

I have a NAS on command, which comes pre-installed with Windows Storage Server.

There is a logon script, which should direct users to files right on the current file and print server, but it seems to be non-fonctionnel, as the .txt file, which he uses as reference contains several incorrect entries.  Despite this, everyone can still see the drives mapped on the temporary server!

I think it's maybe because the system has been implemented by using profiles, not homeless.

    Can anyone confirm this?

It would seem that this migration will not be easy.  Anyone has any advice that can help me in planning for this?  I intend to create a couple of test user accounts and groups and a couple of new fileshares, so I can experiment before you start the migration.

"Pointers" will be much appreciated, as this is the first time I tried this, and I see a lot of Hedges and traps.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2, with two Windows Storage Server 2003 Standard: How can I add the MAC authentication on top of Active Directory authentication for a storage servers?

I have two running Windows Storage Server 2003 storage servers in a domain R2 Windows Server 2008 Standard.  On top of the Active Directory authentication, I want to add authentication of MAC address for the access to one of the storage servers.  In this scenario, an authenticated user is unable to log on to the target storage server unless the user is also on one of the computers MAC address accepted.  All domain users will have access to other folders and files as configuration storage server in Active Directory.  I already have a user access to installation by the permissions for folders on the storage server target, but I still want to restrict access to specific computers as well.  For what it's worth the server hardware is HP Proliant DL360 G5 for the Standard Server 2008 R2 and server HP Proliant DL185 G5 for two Storage Server 2003 computers.  I don't want to have MAC address authentication as the main means of access control to the network, only for the storage server a as an addition to control Active Directory.

  • When you use MS 2003 storage server, backups ESXi virtual machine

    Hello

I have a test lab that I need to put into production, but I need to get to a backup strategy before I can do that.

I have a server ESXi (3.5 U3) frontal 5 virtual machines that all is in an ISCSI data store that is hosted using the Microsoft 2003 Storage Server platform.

One of the virtual machines is a file and print box that has a 500GB partition in the virtual machine, but the virtual machine is located on the ISCSI LUN. What is the best way to save these data, that I can't back up just the LUN because I believe that some of the VM configuration files to sit on the front-end server ESXi?

The nightly backup is always back up all of the LUN (2 TB) because the virtual machine file will always be 500 GB, as it is in full expansion in the file of the virtual machine, so that the incremental backups wanted to work (or will?).

If I am running a backup script against the host of the virtual machine that comes will produce a 500 GB backup file as it comes to the size of the virtual machine?

Any help, suggestions or comments are welcome.

    Thank you

If the data store for ESXi is located on the iSCSI LUN, backup of the iSCSI LUN is all you need to do.  The configuration of the Virtual Machine is stored there, and VMDK files that make up the disks.  If the 500 GB of space on the file and print box is on a LUN that is separated from the iSCSI data store, then you will need to back up both the data store LUNS and the LUNS of 500 GB.  If the 500 GB is just a VMDK file on the data store, the backup data store should get everything.

  • Exadata Storage Server is separated from the database Machine?

FAQ http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/sun-oracle-database-machine-faq-069053.pdf data base of Machine has this question and answer:
What are Sun Oracle Exadata Storage Servers?
Sun Oracle Exadata Storage Servers deliver the disk and
flash storage for the Sun Oracle Database Machine, or
for custom hardware configurations with customers’
    existing Oracle Database servers
The second half of this sentence implies that the Exadata Storage Server can be purchased and implemented independently of the database Machine. Do I understand it correctly? She has been implemented in the way?

    Hemant K Collette

    Hi Hemant,

(Aka 'cells') Exadata storage servers are no longer sold separately for customized designs. They are only sold separately to existing customers of Machine of database to connect to existing database environments. This is not common and should be done only in cases where the balanced configuration is maintained.

I will relay to the FAQ maintainer for update.
