Storage vMotion expired, now VM is on 2 data warehouses and an orphan VM

I was trying last night to storage vmotion, my Exchange 2007 to a new data store on a different San, and it exceeded 6% of the way.  Now it's show as being on two data stores.  There is also a virtual machine with the same name appearing as "orphans".  I looked around, but saw no conclusive answers.  On the new network SAN is a .vmx file and .vswp and some newspapers and other things. On the SAN original is also the .vmx file, of the regular vmdk, newspapers and 3 hard is named dmotion - scsi0:00, dmotion - Scsi0:01 and DmotionScsi0:02.

I'm afraid that my exchange server is now in limbo.  No idea what I need to do?

Thank you

When I got SVMotion failures in the past, I had to power off of the prompt and choose full Migration from the menu of the virtual machine.

It was the same for plug-in and RCLI-based failures.

  • Storage vMotion of 4.1 to 5.5?

I am in the process of upgrading our environment vSphere. I need critical servers vmotion ESX 4.1 at the glomerulus ESXi 5.5 cluster. The two groups are now managed by a 5.5 vcenter server.

See attachment. The PROD4 cluster hosts are all ESX 4.1 and the Production cluster hosts are the ESXi 5.5

Can I install 5.5 on another host and add it to the cluster PROD4 so that I can vmotion VMs critical for her, then vmotion them to the 5.5 cluster?

Bottom line, it is how to make virtual machines on hosts 4.1 5.5 guests without interruption?

I can think in this case is to add one of the hosts of the old cluster/storage, vMotion the VMs on that host, ESXi 5.5 and then use the Web Client vSphere to migrate hosts and data store to the new cluster. With vSphere 5.5 and the Web Client, you can do this even without shared storage.

  • Storage vmotion RDM

I tried to storage servers vmotioned 3 which contained a RDM. The RDM were in virtual compatibility mode. I've migrated 2 servers that have been turned off and all was fine until I tried the 3rd server which was powered and it reported an error saying that the block size was too small for the size of the disk.

I thought that when a server with RDM was vmotioned storage only the file pointer was actually moved and the RDM remained in its orgional State. It seems that the 2 servers I have storage vmotioned now have virtual disks and the RDM were loosened. I've not turned the servers still to see if the data is still there as I don't know what the status of the servers were before the storage vmotion as they have been turned off. The vcenter is 4.1 build 258902 and the esx servers are 4.1.0,260247.

    Dr

When you storage vmotion RDM it converts it to a virtual drive and when he tries the vmfs block size is smaller that the actual ROW (must be more than 256 GB) then you get this error. the data contained in the ROW will be always available. Why not start it because it won't hurt

  • Storage test 55 certification vmotion, storage vmotion fails with "Could not lock file" on the virtual machine during storage vmotion

In my view, that it is a known problem in ESXi 5.5 Update 2 release notes, someone knows a solution yet? This is an excerpt from the release notes:

    • Attempts to perform live storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail
Storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail and virtual machines can be considered in turned off of the State. Attempts to turn on the virtual machine fails with the following error:

      Cannot lock the file

      Workaround: No.

VMware support for the record said that the patch will update 3, it is known as an intermittent problem. Finally, it happened to me on the 9th attempt.

  • Storage vmotion without vCenter

    Friends,

I know that we cannot make a svMotion if we do not have a vCenter server.

What are the other ways to go about this. I found a blog in it?

    http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/04/15/how-to-move-a-VM-without-vCenter-or-storage-VMotion/

Is this a way full proof?

    Hello

Yes, it will work fine, if all the virtual machine files are in this folder.

If you have multiple VMDK, on different data warehouses and want to move all, it will get a bit more complicated.

  • Storage vmotion to another data store on a different san

    Hello

We have a 3.5 ESX cluster running 4 host ESX and Virtual Center. The licensing is ESX Server standard edition. We are migrating to ESXi 4.1 vSphere and a new SAN. One of the issues that we are going through is because we are only in standard edition, we have no storage vmotion to migrate the virtual machines of data stores in the old SAN for data warehouses in the new San. Other than purchasing the add-on storage vmotion, what other options can I. I thought to add a new ESX 3.5 server to the cluster and make storage vmotion from this server while it is running trial license. I would probably need only a few days to storage vmotion on about 45 VMs. Please let me know if one were to do this or any other alternatives available.

    Hello

There is an unofficial plugin that does not require an authorization.

  • I can storage vMotion two popular VMS with shared disks?

I have an ESX 3.0.2 Server with local storage and two ESX 3.5 with fiber channel SAN servers. Two VM sharing disks and run it on the computer with only the local storage. Can I use storage vMotion to move these to a 3.5 servers and more at the SAN?

If not; can I migrate the servers (when closed) to the SAN and 3.5 servers without breaking the links on shared disks?

If you close the virtual machines and migrate them, you should be able to access the disks - as the sVmotion update pointers in the vmx file.

If you upsize and lose access to the disk, you will need to do is open the.vmx file for each virtual computer and update the path specified for each disc, not too hard to fix at all. -If you don't like that, you can simply remove and re-add the disc in the VM properties

  • Storage VMotion GUI

    How to:

Works very well and is very reliable.

  • Storage VMotion for several data stores

I'm looking for some advice and assistance with the help of the vSphere PowerCLI to SVMotions.

I found that I can use virtual vmname Get-machine | Move-VM - datastore (Get-Datastore datastorename) that has worked very well and I was ready to roll. However, it occurred to me that I can only refer to a data store in the cmdlet and some of our virtual machines have their drives located on different data warehouses.

So I set up a test VM with two disks of different data warehouses and began a SVMotion. The result was that it has migrated all disks in their separate data warehouses in a single folder on the target.

What I need to be able to do is to migrate a disk and leave the other in its original location, or migrate two disks of different locations in two different places again. As you can do if you switch the machine virtual and migrate through the graphical interface, moving storage with advanced options (and probably what you can do via the graphical interface with the virtual machine in vSphere).

I've got ESX 3.5 Update 5 with vCenter 2.5 update 6 If no GUI in VirtualCenter and the free snap option not taken in charge is not an option.

Is there a way to do it with the PowerCLI or am I limited to migration the data store's unique virtual machine?

    Thank you very much.

This can be achieved using the. RelocateVM_Task() method of the VirtualMachine SDK object

    See the code below:

    $configDatastoreName = "DataStore_01"
    $HardDisk1DatastoreName = "DataStore_02"
    $HardDisk2DatastoreName = "Datastore_03"

    $vm = Get-VM VM001

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec
#Get MoRef for Destination datastore for Config files
    $spec.Datastore = (Get-Datastore $configDatastoreName | Get-View).MoRef

#for each disk specify where the vmdk files should be placed.
#If a vmdk should NOT be moved, enter its CURRENT datastore
#If you forget to specify a disks location, it will be moved to the datastore
    #specified in $spec.Datastore

    #HardDisk 1
    $objDisk = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator
    $objDisk.DiskID = $vm.HardDisks[0].Id.Split('/')[1]
    $objDisk.DataStore = (Get-Datastore $HardDisk1DatastoreName | Get-View).MoRef
    $spec.Disk += $objDisk

    #HardDisk 2
    $objDisk = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator
    $objDisk.DiskID = $vm.HardDisks[1].Id.Split('/')[1]
    $objDisk.DataStore = (Get-Datastore $HardDisk2DatastoreName | Get-View).MoRef
    $spec.Disk += $objDisk

#When all harddisks are specified call the RelocateVM_task()
    $vm.ExtensionData.RelocateVM_Task($spec, "defaultPriority")

  • unmonitor storage of specific data warehouses connectivirty

    Hello

We conduct the following isue: we do backpups Exchange using SnapManager for Exchange NetApp. Once the task of backup, the backup is verified by the mounting of a LUN on the server. The problem with this is that, after the audit, the LUN is disconnected and that the alarm is set on the vCenter that a data store has lost connectivity.

What we would like is to avoid alerts on this specific LUN (it is always LUN0) used only to verify the backup.

We have tried to set an alarm (storage connectivity), but it also detects this logic unit number that we do not want to detect.

Thank you in advanced for your comments.

    Best regards

    Miguel

I see.  In this case, I believe you can use the new functionality of object datastore in vSphere.  You can change where you place your alarm data store.  In other words, go to your view of data stores, create a folder, call followed computer data warehouses and add your alarm data store it.  Next, move all data storage you want to look in this folder.  All new data store that is created will be outside of this folder and will not be subject to this alarm.

VM have been storage vMotioned to another data store, and now I have 3 VM with white "!" inside a red square and I want to understand the cause of this.

Can you try to make a vmotion host and see if it gets resolved? If not, can you close the virtual machine and start again? I have seen this problem before and a stop and start resolved.

  • Storage vmotion very slow

Storage vmotions run very slowly. The virtual machine that has a 60 GB HARD drive. I tried different storage and still the same result. I have even upgraded to a network of 10 GB with the same results. I opened an evidence of support and the engineer told me vmotion will not use the link in full speed but it seems quite slow for the numbers I get. I hope I have provided enough information below for assistance. I hope that it is something I am doing wrong...

    Hosts:

3 x ESXi host. Two are updated to version 6.0 1 and a version 5.5.

    Dell PowerEdge R610

    Xeon E5540 - 8 x 2.53GHz

    48 GB OF RAM

10 GB for storage and vmotion traffic

4 x 1 Gb NIC for vm traffic interconnection

All storage is on the shared storage. The only local thing is the operating system

VMware EVC mode for the production of Intel's Nehalem.

    Storage

    Supermicro NAS 2 to 4 x 4 RAID 10 storage pools

    Integrated 10 GB NIC

    QNAP TS - 469U - PR to 4 x 4 RAID 5 NAS

    2 x 1 GB NIC aggregated link

    Network

All 3 hosts and NAS are connected with a Netgear dedicated 10 GB switch (low-end model).

    Using a standard vswitch

    Problem

1 ESXi host has a computer virtual stored on storage on NAS Supermicro 1 pool. When a storage vmotion is running on a virtual machine that has a 60 GB VMDK, it takes a long time to complete. He started at 09:36, and is now 61% fine at 10:58.

    2. the network of 10 GB is where the vmotion traffic is allowed.

    3. If I use a link to 10 GB or a 1 GB link, I get the same speed.

    4. I have disabled all VM at a time given for the trial and who has not helped either.

    5. I tried a QNAP so storage vmotion, and I get the same speed.

I use connection CAT6A cables. I have fine tuned for storage, and it seems to work better now. Seems to be linked to "writing - sync" as ESXi.

  • Storage vMotion - Shadow created VM!

    Hello

I cancelled a task of storage for a virtual machine vMotion and now I have two virtual machines with the same name. I understand Storage vMotion creates a shadow VM as part of the migration.

The cancellation has not been cleaned so I now a VM THAT under tension and work and a VM turned off with 0MB of data warehouses.

Is it OK to goahead and remove this 'Shadow' VM?

I look forward to hear from anyone with help.

    Thank you

    Peter.

I guess, there is no problem.

Just remove the inventory and then delete the folder.
